Is This The Most Versatile Guitar Amp? - SUHR PT15 I.R.

- In today's video I'm looking at arguably the world's most versatile guitar amp the Suhr PT15 I.R.
This 15 watt hybrid amp is not only a fully featured 3 channel Valve/ Tube guitar amp, it also has a Suhr Reactive Load built right in to the amp that can store 16 different ir's that can be stored individually to each of the 3 channels.
This is what Suhr say about the PT15 IR
The PT15 I.R. is the world’s first truly hybrid amplifier, marrying classic tube circuitry with a reactive load and digital impulse response technology.
With the PT15 I.R. we set out to combine the strengths of both analog and digital to create something new. The addition of a built-in Reactive Load and on-board impulse responses, make using a speaker cabinet optional for recording, or feeding front of house with a studio quality mic’ed up tone. Also included is a headphone output and auxiliary input to practice and jam along with your favorite tracks, wherever you are.
The all-tube three channel design offers a plethora of American and British tones, powered by a new 6V6 driven power section. The dynamics, overdrive, saturation and harmonics that we crave as tonal purists, is all here. By adding channel assignable IRs, you now have unprecedented versatility and control over your tone, expanding your choices more than ever before.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

I really like that amp, but for a similar price I bought (used) a Suhr Badger 15, a Bad Cat Cub 15R and a Marshall SV20.
That’s a really cool amp. Definitely a choice when it comes to a new amp. I want to invite you both to visit Austin TX, where real amps and wedge monitors are still the norm. Let the pants flap!!
Fantastic demo sir!
Cheers Paul great video. Such a great amp. I bought it then got the matching 1x12 ported cab. It's retired my victory amps and pretty much all my drive pedals, not to mention my captor X. My view, it's not inexpensive but it is good value. The reality is I could easily sell all my other amps/drive pedals and just use the PT.
There is also a non IR version available for about £400 or so less.
Whenever I’m interested in an amp, I’m like, “ohhhh I hope Paul did a video on this!” Your videos give just the right details and balance of talking and playing, always with tasteful playing that showcases the range of what the amps can do. It’s particularly useful on some of these expensive boutique ones because it’s often not easy to audition them before buying. Thank you!
Cheers Justin, glad it helps.
What a great demo! Big + for all the Ionian/Dorian super cool licks! ^^
This demo was really great. Great player and very concise descriptions. Great piece of gear. I’m sold!
Thank you kindly!
I love valves, have been using them miked on stage for 30 yrs. 15 watt is more than enough, more volume only creates trouble. However, I got tired of all the lifting 2 times p week. So now I got myself a Line6 amp with an XLR out. It weighs 10 kg. I use only the clean amp (sounds 'ok') and the rest just pedals. Love it for less than €250....
Gorgeous tones.
Great review, and I love your Katana content. Pete Thorn is the man, and this amp is everything I’d expect it to be, associated with P.T. as it is… However. No one amp is more versatile than three different, wisely chosen, $1300 amps. The price on this is prohibitive, no matter how good it is. I got a Boogie Mk. V/25 brand new for roughly half the price of this. That is quite something to say.
It’s really versatile with a “Marshall in a box” pedal (that I already owned) out front. It does just about anything but a Plexi sound and the pedal takes care of that. I’m not sure why you’d buy an amp like this rather than any nice 15w amp, like an Orange OR15 and an IRL, or a Helix and an IRL, or even a Katana and an IRL. It’s for studio pros, not the regular Joe in a band. Even if one could afford this, it really eats into total budget in a way that I wouldn’t feel wise about.
Furthermore, it’s all tube, so it will need to be maintained. In a way that tube amp techs don’t tend to like to do, in my experience.
It’s an amp for a very small subset of players, imvho.
I went down this path , yet turned my head to a SLO-100 modded by Dave Friedman, Mesa Trem-O-Verb Modded by JT AMP'S, PRS DG30 for my tweed, brown, black, Hiwatt, Marshall esq cleans and PRS HXDA for my Plexi dirty tones. Also grabbed a wizard MTL MKII EL34 for the meaniest tones. For now I am set and jumped the shark over the Suhr PT15
That's a hell of a collection!
@@Adventuresingearland Thanks Mate ! Had some great folks guiding on TPG and the opportunities came through and jumped on the gear, it was a great Journey!
@@maximumguitarage I still can’t make enough posts to buy and sell on tgp 😂
@@mthao1832 bc u have to pay, not a post count thing
I have one ….I love it, but I don’t use the reactive load. If I need to record direct I prefer the sound of the two notes torpedo. But the natural sound of the amplifier is awesome, my favorite!!
Anything with a PT moniker is going to be brilliant.
The Hughes & Kettner Coreblade 100 or Grandmiester Deluxe 40 is definitely the most versatile.
Love my PT-15 IR
As an owner of a Tone King Imperial MK2 head and cab, Princeton 68 and Boss Katana MK2 practice amp I was very interested in this video. the PT15 .I.R is a very, very nice amp, that said I did think the output from the IR sounded very like my Boss Katana !! So I think I'd be happier with the no IR version and a great cab. I guess I'm just not a cab emulation guy.
That used to be an interesting amp about two years ago. Since then it’s price has gone up more than a 1000€. 3900€ is beyond reasonable in any respect, sorry.
What do you know that has not gone up in the last 2 years and won't continue to go up? Are you not aware of the times we're living in? Im in usa where we are still somewhat free compared to the rest of the planet. We are not locked in and rounded up like cattle, we still have decent supply and supply chains and eggs...EGGS have gone up double the price. All the European clients I have tell me about the horror stories in Europe and what its like to get a good steak, I just had a couple tell me about people dying because they can't keep WARM. I thought they were joking, but they said you actually get prescribed heating from an f'n Doctor..but you are complaining about one of the highest components and highest quality a company puts out? Suhr is second to none in quality. I think you are unaware of what is going in on in the world as we speak. Im confident you are not aware of the spike steel has gone up to the last 2 years. Must be nice to have that mentality or live in that world.
@@equalleftrights3130 Don‘t think I complained about anything. I just stated imho that amp has become way to expensive over here. Peace & love and a happy new year.
@@equalleftrights3130 Nobody is getting prescribed heating here, you trolling looney...
@@friedmojo Same to you. Everything has gone up everywhere was my point.

Incredible sound!
Great review Paul , lovely tones, love that amp! Serious question though, is is really loud enough for a working function band? (I can't really agree with your opening comments, sorry). Generally you need a good 6dB lift for solos so headroom is essential. I've tried 20w watt amps that sound great - the power section is working hard, but there's no headroom, and just not practical for my needs with a loud drummer next to me! Interested in people's thoughts. (Of course, I can mic up and use monitors, but often that's not an option for the whole band to hear the guitar).
I had a Matchless Lightning 15 and I found it got well above a drummer.
Nice one Paul
as far as versatility goes, I think the Hughes and Kettner Triamp MK 2 is king. 128 sounds to save, 3(or6) Channels, power soak,... However, I am still using my Marshall JMP1, that I got in the 1990s. Still one of the best for me :)
I am using the Mesa Triaxis with the Mesa 2:90 Power amp. My version has a Plexi card along with the usual Boogie monster channels. It's bliss going from classic Boogie to the best Plexi sounds you can get. I also run the Eventide FX for utterly transparent FX. The JMP-1 is also one of my favs also Sansamp.
Got the triamp mkiii it’s fantastic does suhr marshall boogie recto fender stuff
You can't go wrong with Suhr. They're expensive, but they're high quality pro stuff in all their products. That's one very versatile amp, far from a one trick pony.
a 15 watt amp for £3.000...you actually can go very wrong. The competition out there is huge at £3.000
If you have not ,try a Suhr Badger 18 for stage. You really dial it in . Big sound at useable levels .
Woow man...everytime when I watch your videos the giutar sound is killer, every guitar, every multiFx, amp you use, sounds like a dream to me.... What is the secret to that guitar tone😀😀 Happy new year and all the best🎸
Cheers Juca. I’m not sure everyone would agree with you😀 I’ve worked as a mixing engineer for years and I guess I have an idea of the sort of tones that I like to record with, but pretty much every video has a stereo delay going into a reverb.
Paul is great with his gain staging for a desired sound
Excellent demo. Pete Thorn has mentioned that Suhr is working on a 50 watt PT. Not sure if it will have the reactive load.
I’d be surprised if they do the IR version for it. The whole point of the IR, of course, being that it allows a DI signal to the house board, which negates the need for the extra wattage
It appears you got more out of the Revv D20. This maybe more reflective of your approach to drive sounds by stacking pedals ??
Last time I took my Fender Supersonic 60 out (last week) I had the master on at least 3 and we played with a PA.
I really wanted this amp at first sight, but got a Twin, a UK made VoxAC30 and one Revv D20. I still like it a lot especially after your review! Is it three times better than the D20 is the question.😂 Happy New Year!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼🧿
Hi Seyfi, I miss my D20 stick with what you’ve got. They’re some great amps.
Foe suhr that's awesome!
Nice one, Paul. Great sounds. Have you tried the Tone King Gremlin?
I haven’t, I’ll have a look.
Fantastic amp, as all Suhr gear is really. Very expensive in Australia unfortunately. Well beyond the hobbyist, a real commitment for a pro. Incredible studio tool if you can afford and justify it
It's very expensive everywhere!
Pretty expensive in the US as well to be fair, but used prices aren't terrible.
If versatility is the key, I’m not sure anything surpasses a Synergy amp, but it’s clearly right up there.
I love the design and quality of almost all Suhr products, but they just never seem to grab me on an emotional level. I never bond with any of them. Not sure why.
Killer amp for the modern world. Btw, what pickups you got in that tele?
I’m afraid I don’t know what’s in the Tele. I did however soot a video on it when I got it about a year ago.
Very nice Amp Paul, I have lusted after a PT15 since its release, is this a Loan amp or a new acquisition ?
I bought it used for the video to sell on after. Buying used means I can shoot the vid without loosing money.
If this amp would have MIDI channel switching it would be perfect.! I have the PT100SE and it has MIDI switching which I use all the time.
This or the Soldano Astro 20? What say you?
Gah I wanted one of these so bad a while back but every time I play a 6V6 driven amp, I can’t stand the body midrange. 😢
*boxy
Last I recall you were looking at a Two Rock or a Divided by 13. Which did you end up keeping?
I had owned a D13 for years and bought a two rock and a Matchless. I sold everything else and kept the Matchless.
Killer tone! Can you model this on tonex please? :)
Which boost pedal & overdrive did you use during the clean channel part of the demo?
I’m afraid I can’t say about the boost as it’s not released yet but the drive was a Dualist
@@TheStudioRats I guess you mean the Duellist by KingTone?
Yes that’s what I meant.
im doing some research because im gonna build a rehearsal area to rent out , will a 15w amp be enough for clean sounds in a rehearsal situation ? i take it if you raise the volume till it distorts 15w is gonna be ok and probably more then ok , but for clean ?
how does it compare to RSA23? im about to buy a new amp, im rocking AD30 right now, fell in love with RSA23, especially after seeing your demo, any words of advise please?
Either you or James interested in keeping this Jem for yourselves ?
Hi Brad, It is a great amp but unfortunately I need to move it on. Luckily I managed to get this second hand so I could make this video but I never intended to keep it.
Holy crap that opening riff, what in the hell was that?
3.900 Euros in Germany. Thats really a price.
it suhr is.
@@TheStudioRats lol
GaH🫠🫣
To answer the title question, well, for that price... it'd better be!!!
😯🤭😉
Sounds great. And of course Pete Thorn would know EXACTLY what makes a great and flexible amp.
But bloody hell is it expensive - can't shake off the feeling that for all its excellence & qualities there still is a hefty price jacking by "our american friends" involved in the pricing, here.
A different perception of price/value in that society, an always very unfavourable conversion from $ to € (or £), and a big price hike to pay for the brand's rather posh name.
Me, I'd rent it for a recording session, but wouldn't buy it.
This or the revv for home use only?
What’s the reverb on the clean tones?
That’s from an Axe Fx 3
It's wild that to me the Matchless ToneX profile you did sounded better than this amp.
It’s my favourite amp.
@@TheStudioRats Thank you so much for sharing it with us. To think that a day would come where I would get for free on a free app a tone that is arguably as good as anything I could achieve in a studio is mind-blowing. Once again, thank you.
I want one so bad, but its hard to justify the cost. If you take out the cost of the reactive load, its still a $2200 15 watt hand wired amp. That's in the territory of a twin sister almost.
Also just found out it's not actually handwired which isn't a bad thing, and the components are quality, but makes me wonder what I'm paying for vs the 20 watt handwired Friedmans.
The days are only gone if you allow them .
Nice sound but not wurth the high price.
have to agree. It is wayyyy to expensive, especially here in europe
@Seymour Cash thats what I paid as well for a used one.
It’s well worth it. An extremely high quality, versatile and great sounding amplifier.
Yep....sounds like Paul...through a ...yes u guessed it... a Katana
I'm scared to see how much the Suhr is?? Left nut or sell car?????
Both left/ right nuts and car.
