Interesting. It looks exactly like my Montegrappa Elmo model, except for the finish. Mine is a medium nib and a lovely writer, very smooth and decently wet, skates across the page, just a notch below my Pelikans. It has less feedback than my Platinum 3776. I think it was about $175-180 last April, a Goulet exclusive. These are JoWo nibs, a change over from Bock, which Montegrappa formerly used. If people like the basic shape of the pen, check out their Elmo model, either at Goulet or Goldspot and probably elsewhere, as well. It will be cheaper and has some more attractive finishes.
Maybe the brown cap is meant to represent a hickory stick, the old-fashioned type of tool used to gain the attention of inattentive students. I believe that the green is a good approximation of the current green "black"boards. Montegrappa has some attractive FP designs, but I have never been satisfied with the way they write.
Thank you Stephen ... and also a too often overlooked Thank You to Yost for keeping you (all of us) supplied with interesting eye candy!! Very nice of you, Yost. Yep. We had the green "black" (slate) boards when I was growing up too. They were pretty darned close to the shade in the box (the shade in the pen is a bit off on my monitor). In my memory (which may be flawed at this point), the green boards cleaned more easily. I can still smell the chalk dust from cleaning our favorite teacher's erasers or was that punishment for chewing gum and talking? Eh, I don't know, but the memory is, unexpectedly, a pleasant one. (How some of them put up with me still baffles me!)
Cleaning the board and the erasers was always billed as a reward in my schools. My favorite task was getting to help sponge-clean the board. It was so satisfying.
@@TheHardcoreDilettante I think we had some of both, but for the life of me, I can't recall why it was a good thing sometimes and a not-so-good thing other times. My schooling was a lonnggg time ago and I'm beginning to forget lots of things. I AM glad for the confirmation that it was a reward at least for some folks! Thanks Dilettante.
As a teacher I can’t see myself buying this pen as it costs over $500 in Australia. Agree with your comments about the idea of the pen celebrating teachers is great but it misses the mark in how it looks. Thanks for the video.
It feels like base manipulation, appealing to sentiments about teachers, school days, and Malala herself, with an indefensibly expensive pen that doesn't write that well (again, antithetical to the premise). Is Malala or her cause benefitting from this?
I actually really love that green color in conjunction with that deep caramel, and I think honoring teachers is a terrific theme for a pen. However, I'm a little disappointed, given that being a teacher is usually not the most highly paid occupation in most societies, that the pen wasn't priced in a way that would make it more affordable for the people it's honoring.
The Hardcore Dilettante I apologize for my curiosity, but can I ask you where are you from? I'm from Russia and your words totally relate to our situation, but I heard in Western Europe for example it isn't that bad.
Pay for teachers varies widely by location in the USA. You would be surprised at how much teachers are paid in some schools, but in other schools, less so.
@@peterpuleo2904 This is true, but they're never the most prestigiously paid. Higher salaries tend to occur in places with extremely high cost of living.
Is the nib's feedback supposed to sound like nails on a chalkboard or the sound chalk makes on a blackboard? Many teachers are poorly paid to the point that they are po and cannot afford the o and r. Thanks for your review.
Thanks for the interesting review. Special thanks for including the price. Whenever I see a review without a price, I wonder why it was omitted. Regarding the pen, to my eye it looks like the wrong cap was put on the barrel.
I am not a teacher but I think it has a certain unpretentious charm in term of the colours and materials. Very much a utility designed to be reliable, comfortable and used often.
1) I think they missed the opportunity to make the clip either a ruler or a pencil. 2) I had a Montegrappa Elmo (the teacher pen is basically just a colorway of the Elmo) with a broad nib that was way over polished. Big disappointment for $195
Thank you for the review! I own four Montegrappa’s. All are excellent writers. I find their medium nibs to write a bit more on the ‘broad-medium’ side than most other companies medium nibs.
I think I would like the pen more if the cap was the same color as the barrel. If it was like that they might have gotten me, but just because I am a teacher. Maybe that would make me a sucker. I will look for this in the aftermarket in about a year. I figure it will be much cheaper then.
Stephen, great review as always. I guess the price is based on the fact that being a Montegrappa pen, they cannot go too far "down market". I think the theme of the cap is the wooden desks found in classes (from the olden days), it is nice in a quirky way. I think the pin should be detachable:-)
Thank you, Stephen. I've never had any luck with my previous Montegrappa purchases (nibs always had issues) and I can't see spending in excess of US $250. for a steel nib Italian fountain Pen. Mind you, I love my Leonardo and Auroras fountain pens but the price is quite a bit better and I feel the writing experience is definitely superior to what I have experienced with Montegrappa.
I think the green and brown combo works very well for me. I would prefer a broad nib. The box and presentation is very clever, something that adds to the character charm of the package. Montegrappa deserves a gold star for this one.
Thank you, Stephen. Not terrible. I generally like Montegrappa. I like the clip and general shape of the pen. But I would prefer just the colour of the cap and to ditch the theme. ("Leave the gun, take the cannolis.")
Maybe this pen was designed for students from wealthy families to give to their favorite teacher? I wouldn't hesitate to buy a pen in a box that says, "best teacher in the world," but I'm not known for my humility. It does seems more like a gift.
For me, this is a 79-99 euro pen, something PenBBS would sell for around 19 bucks ... Stylewise ... Okay-ish, but nothing more. For that price, I would see a matte black (or dark Green → the board) pen Body with a White (Matte → the chalk) Clip, maybe with a matte white nib ...
Excellent review. Interesting pen. I think without the backstory, it would be just a so-so pen and it's too pricey. Also, please straighten the Mandalorian poster, it's driving me crazy. ;)
I think the fine nib allows the teacher to make corrections clearer on student test papers where space to write is always limited. The pen's colour scheme isn't attractive at all. Quite boring.
Interesting review. Excellent point regarding price. But why make a pen for such a noble profession and then gouge customers on the price. If they really need to make that significant a profit, perhaps pick a better payed profession (doctor, dentist, engineer, etc).
Thank you Stephen for the honest review as always. I feel that Montegrappa should have known better while having the great idea of creating a so called "teacher's pen", try to rip off the teachers who cannot afford a mediocre instrument by using Malala for doing it. It is capitalism at its worst. Shame on them. Cheers...
I really wish someone (maybe you) would give a thorough overview on fountain pen pricing. I’ve watched enough of your videos to know if you criticize a price it has to be pretty high, so when you were starting I guessed in my mind $150 US, which I thought would be crazy high, and still I’m way off. So honestly, what’s the rationale? Salaries for the craftsmen and craftswomen? High cost of manufacture to low numbers of sales? Or just pure greed? I would never pay that kind of money for a pen like that. But I guess people do, so maybe I’m just one who doesn’t see the value while others do.

I see the price has now gone up to $199 at Goulet, $236 for their new exclusive, which is gorgeous, but getting kind of pricey.
I think in place of green and brown combination if they would have used white and black (chalk and black board) it would have been more attractive
Great Intro! Not everyone can get away with singing....I sure can’t....but you sound polished. Awesome pen too!!

I concur a gold nib is warranted at that price tag. Its priced premium need to look as well.
I love the idea of this, but as a school psychologist I have to ask: what teacher can afford this price point? Very strange choice for Montegrappa.

I think Montegrappa is over priced. But I would give that pen a shot at maybe $195, and that is a bit high too.

Matthew Aleman the way I look at it, if the pen is good, I’ll work on the nib. Or replace it.
