I think Joker at the moment Batman jumped for Rachel immediately suspected Harvey Dent to be Batman. Since the only reason he was at the party was to assassinate Dent, he leaves cause in his mind Dent is laying on the car now. You don't need to have the villain explain what he's doing. You can show it. There's a reason "Show, don't tell" is one of the first rules of writing. Audiences aren't complete idiots, even though Hollywood often treats them that way. And if you are going to have the villain explain what he's doing, you should construct a situation where it makes sense for him to explain it. It makes no sense for Scarecrow to explain his plan to Rachel. If he was explaining his plan to a new accomplice or something, that would make a lot more sense.
"He's the hero Gotham deserves but not the one it need right now" So I rewatched The Dark Knight to check if this line is just a cool line and nothing more. 6:25 I get that exposition is needed to explain the villain's plan but there are less obvious ways to do it. Rather than Crane openly showing Rachel, maybe Rachel follows Crane down there (perhaps to speak to him about his patients) and eavesdrops on the bad guys talking about their evil plan and then they catch her. That's one very simple way of doing it without resorting to tropes. And the downside to Crane 'glorifying' his plan in front of Rachel and letting her run off, risking her getting away, risks him angering Ra's Al Ghul and ending up the same as Falcone. It's just lazy writing that you wouldn't expect from someone like Nolan. One of the best things about these Pitch Meetings is that it shows just how silly some of these film plots really are. I like this trilogy but after watching this video, you soon realize that the Dark Knight trilogy isn't actually as good as people think, compared to 2022's The Batman. In reality, people only really cling to their love of TDK because of Heath Ledger. Without the Joker, it is an average to OK film
You can simply show the villain to the audience, it's not like you see the movie from the PoV of the hero or some sidekicks, you can just show them the villains as you like without making them complete idiots (not that most plans of antagonists in moderen movies make much sense to begin with...).
the cops literally explain what crane was doing right after batman leaves with rachel, and she didn't tell anyone and crane got gassed so he didn't either. the cops were examining the scene and said they must have been dumping the stuff in the water supply for weeks. the whole thing with rachel was pointless and just an excuse to gas her, which he could have done in the elevator
So glad your mind flashed back to the Leonard(Hey Lenny!) Shelby character in Memento! I've had "progressive autoimmune brain condition" problems since adolescence so it touched me a bit. Remember Sammy Jankis.
The way I see it is that Batman uses his computer to "figure out things" like for example the time range and probability of when Gordon would take out the trash. Then the computer is like "He will be available between this time and this time" so then batman goes there as like going to a meeting.
I felt it during Dent's reaction to her death, because they did flesh out how much she meant to him. But yeah, perhaps a bit more developing on this and the first movie would had made a bigger impact
LOL you don't need a bad guy to explain his motives etc. You can literally just write a story for him instead of a quick dialogue exposition piece. Actions speak louder than words. The only downside is time allocation to do so, or make it a theme of the movie. Ex: Die Hard movies (discovering motivations) Ex: Logan Ex: Joker Ex: some of Harry Potter
I agree about Rachel... first of all they shouldn't have replaced Katie Holmes with Maggie. Second.. I thought that character wasn't flashed out well. I was waiting to see Katie in second more but when they replaced her I didn't care whatsoever happened to that character.
What’s worse about that penthouse scene is those party guests were not only left with the joker and his goons. They’re still supposed to be looking for Harvey Dent so obviously they weren’t thorough enough to look into that closet or whatever. Then now too long after Rachel calls Bruce’s Penthouse the safest place in Gotham. After what had just happened there.
So funny how powerful the suspension of disbelief can be that no one notices the ridiculousness of sending the entire police force 60k officers into the sewers at once leaving the entire city lawless.
Batman killed a lot of people in the comic… then parents groups freaked out. So Robin was created as a motivation not to be a killer… but Batman killed people regularly by breaking their necks and throwing them off buildings in the 30’s.
The line "Hero they deserve not what they need" basically means they do not deserve saving they deserve to be punished so they get the Batman to punish the crime instead of someone to fix the core of the problem like they need. Since Batman never solves the problem he just makes it worse essentially punishing all who live there for allowing and taking part in the sin they all commit.
The thing about the Dark Knight is Joker is employing whats called chaos theory and he acts like hes commiting random actions BUT IN REALITY hes basically stirring a pot with a TON of contingency plans...but yeah for him its all just a game anyways to put people in difficult situations so they don't actually need to work just cause an effect/terror for him to be satisfied
The funny thing is that the comic book Batman is legitimately both paranoid and thorough enough that he probably does keep tabs on things like the trash day and general habits of virtually everyone around him.
There’s a very simple way to get around the ridiculousness of the bad guy monologuing his plan. Don’t have the main bad guy monologue his plan. You could have a henchman explain things to new recruits and have the hero infiltrate, posing as a new recruit. Or you have the hero piece the plan together from clues they gather throughout the story and then they go “You’re planning to ______!!!” And the main bad guy goes “you figured it out” or “not exactly, it’s actually _______”. You don’t NEED the villain explaining his plan, writers are just too lazy to do it any other way.
It's not just that the mastermind revealed his scheme with the water supply, but that he showed Rachel. You can show it to the viewers without doing that
Secondly, why is everyone assuming that the Batman was in the bat while it was carrying the bomb!? It has autopilot, why would the batman fly the bat and then swim back to the shore of Gotham?

"Now Batmans really good because he did some push-ups in prison" .. oh yeah, we all know how powerfull that would make you since we saw "One Punch Man" 😄😄
The reason Batman was unhurt by the fall on to the car was because he was wearing specialized armor that absorbed the blow, demonstrated earlier in the film when he practically flattens an unmarked van in the parking lot by jumping on it.

The problem is, no one believed Bruce and Harvey being in love with Maggie Gyllenhaal's melted candle face. Then joker at the party says "you must be Dent's main squeeze,... and you are beautiful". Everyone collectively in their head said "Nope. No she isn't".
At least half of even these characters are still unmemorable, Cobb and Mal especially barely existed and the only parts that were interesting about them were ripped straight out of Shutter Island (an actually good movie).
Cooper yes. I don't know who Murph is. Alfred is just generic. Jeremy Irons and Andy Serkis were equally brilliant, and maybe in some cases surpass Nolan's version. Gordon was boring. Just a bystander. I don't know who Cobb and Mal are from Inception.
I get u jabs , cuz bamanand Joker were not 'created' by nolan , they both had existed well before him . but thr arn't any nolan created original character that has left a mark in my memory . darn it , now you mention momento , i gotta retract my statement as well
Nolan’s movies are plot driven and not character driven. The genius in his plots more than makes up for the bland characters. I mean there’s no time to retract your dropped jaw coz the plot is so dang interesting!
I never got the criticism with the fundraiser scene. The Joker clearly states he is there for Harvey Dent. Later in the movie, in the interogation scene he tells Bruce he thought Harvey was Batman because of the way he threw himself out the window to save Rachel. So if the Joker was there to find Harvey, and he thought Harvey jumped out, why would he stick around?
Affleck's suit is the best. But it's a bit too buff. But I like Keaton's vibes the most. I genuinely think that bale only works due to 4 factors. 1. It was the polar opposite of Clooney. 2. Ledger. 3. Realistic. 4. Ledger again, raised the hype for rises. I don't think the story was all that, I hate the voice and costume for bale. I think it was a case of at the right place at the right time.
Bad guys explaining what they’re doing is a trope that you need, but I think Jujutsu Kaisen handles it in the most interesting way I’ve seen. In JJK people have different abilities, and the potency of the abilities increases if you explain them. It seems dumb at first, but it’s the first time I’ve seen a reason for why characters would explain their plans/abilities, and it works really well with the story. I think more shows/movies could benefit from making there be a legitimate reason for the explanation trope.
so here is my gripe with the fear gas thing, right? they dump it in a river, wouldn't it just you know... float out to the ocean? or does it go into a huge water well for the whole city controlled by Wayne tower? so wait. If a firefighter refuses to save someone from a burning building for some reason, that's manslaughter? If you can save someone, you must or it's a crime? that's so weird.
It still baffles me why people are confused about the fall off the building. Batman opened his cape and usually he was shown time and time again to glide with it, so why are people surprised that it worked that specific time too? xD
I feel like Nolan used to do a lot more character work than he does now. His films now tend to focus on plot and spectacle (still good), but his older films, like The Prestige and Insomnia, have characters that actually do stick with you.

The problem is, no one believed Bruce and Harvey being in love with Maggie Gyllenhaal's melted candle face. Then joker at the party says "you must be Dent's main squeeze,... and you are beautiful". Everyone collectively in their head said "Nope. No she isn't".
“You merely adopted the dark
I was born in it”
Batman doesn't kill, he might beat you nearly to death but he doesn't kill.
Unmemorable characters?! Cooper & Murph from Interstellar?! The Joker, Alfred, & Gordon?! Cobb & Mal from Inception?!
No. Joker was the only memorable character. Stop dickriding Nolan lol.
Yeah, sure, plot. Lol. So many plot conveniences in the Trilogy but Nolan fanboys just overlook it because, well Christopher Nolan.
@@gibson587 Ikr, Batman fights for one year and just gives up for the next 8 years just because Rachael dies? Wtf? The most convenient plot ever
Scarecrow, the original Taser Face!
Robert pattinson sleeping his way thru the batman.
"Emotional weight!"
How can you not remember Sammy Jenkis. It was tattooed on Leonard’s hand.
Val Kilmer's Batman, "Chick dig the car."
Why haven't we done a live-action recreation of Mask of Phantasm?
I think Batman was going to talk to Gordon either way. But, he just happened to take out the trash, so that was easier.
Interstellar - Cooper
Affleck's suit is the best. But it's a bit too buff. But I like Keaton's vibes the most. I genuinely think that bale only works due to 4 factors. 1. It was the polar opposite of Clooney. 2. Ledger. 3. Realistic. 4. Ledger again, raised the hype for rises. I don't think the story was all that, I hate the voice and costume for bale. I think it was a case of at the right place at the right time.
Bale is definitely one of the best actors out there though, the opening of Love and Thunder where Gor begs the God, that's such good acting
Christian Bale is my Bat Man
I never understood why Michael Keaton, the actor who became famous for Beetlejuice, had a problem being fun and campy in the Batman Forever.
Theatricality and deception are powerful tools
so here is my gripe with the fear gas thing, right? they dump it in a river, wouldn't it just you know... float out to the ocean? or does it go into a huge water well for the whole city controlled by Wayne tower?
so wait. If a firefighter refuses to save someone from a burning building for some reason, that's manslaughter? If you can save someone, you must or it's a crime? that's so weird.
Bat milk crazy, those flying mammals.
Yeah Nolan is famous for writing some cold, white bread characters.Michael Mann is also like that and Nolan is a fan of his
The rose tinted glasses are strong with this one 🤷♂️
If you haven't already - do the ''Batman & Robin Pitch Meeting.''
It still baffles me why people are confused about the fall off the building. Batman opened his cape and usually he was shown time and time again to glide with it, so why are people surprised that it worked that specific time too? xD
I think Cooper from interstellar is a very well Written character and one of my favorites movie protagonists
