At a live show in a smaller club a few years ago, she walked out on the floor as she was singing, and came over to me and gave me a hug. I can still feel lit.
One of the most astonishing and soulful performances I have ever seen. There is NOBODY like Bettye Lavette! This goes WAY BEYOND just "singing". She grabs me, and she won't let go. This is the REAL DEAL, folks!
Her cover of The Who's "Love Reign Oe'r Me" is one of the greatest covers I've ever heard in my life. I don't even think The Who ever performed live that well-and they're one of my favorite bands ever.
Don't know how often I heard Elton John sing "Don't let the sun go down on me" but it seems I never listened to the words. Thanks Bettye, you made me listen to every syllable...
1:00 - *Ringo Starr: It Don't Come Easy* (6:23) 6:37 - *Elton John: Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me* (12:27) 12:43 - *The Moody Blues: Nights in White Satin* (17:42)
This is an amazing gem. Justin Hayward pays attention to very few renditions of his signature song, but when he heard Bettye's studio version he was totally taken by it (who wouldn't be) and absolutely loved the fact that she had completely turned the story into her own very special night in white satin.
"A force of nature" -- a phrase that we hear all too often attributed to artists who don't quite measure up to the hype, but this woman definitely embodies that phrase and encapsulates its meaning!! I, too, was introduced to her by the aforementioned Fresh Air episode the presenter referenced -- some months later (maybe even more than a year), I got to see a live performance she did at my downtown theater, the Weinberg (in Frederick, Md.), and I hafta say that it's high up on my list of favorite concerts that I've attended -- she hella owned that room with that one-of-a-kind voice of hers and had that audience in the palm of her hand from the first note to the last and all the stories she told in between the songs she sang!!!
@@PamelaPollandMusic No. I'm sorry - I love her- but absolute tf no. Janis Joplin is a talent beyond most people conception of what's possible. Both are great. She's underrated fosho, shamely so, but don't starting staying bs about Janis Joplin. She herself would probably be pretty upset about that kind of statement. That's just not true tbh
Hey Jas, sorry to offend you. I did not say anything bad about Janis, who I have admired for decades. Just saying what I think about Bettye, and I bet Janis would have LOVED Bettye and even wanted to sing with her. :-)@@jas_bataille

A Genuine Legend .
The Queen of Soul & RnB 👑

Kennedy Center Honors brought me here…❤️❤️❤️

I just heard of her today and I'm a huge music fan 👍😱
I have only just found Bettye. I have now purchased her Interpretations CD.
She is tremendous.
You're in for a trip sir! Ms Lavette will hurt you in a good way.
She is the type of woman that if she call you sweetie or honey you'll have your days brighten up for the next five years

Yes, I can see why you like her so much. Sings from the heart. And the guitarist is awesome, too.
Se's gross and her voice screetches like a nail on a chalkboard
Her cover of The Who's "Love Reign Oe'r Me" is one of the greatest covers I've ever heard in my life. I don't even think The Who ever performed live that well-and they're one of my favorite bands ever.
OMG, wotavoice ... A real HAPPY 77th Birthday to Mrs. Bettye LaVette-Kinley and really ALL the best to her ... (2023-0129)
I just met her not 15 minutes ago at work, and she is the nicest person I’ve ever interacted with. So down to earth, and I am so glad to have met her
Purity. Zero effects on her voice. Amazing.
Bettye Lavette, is unsung but an amazing singer! I love her voice. She’s a gift to the world!!

Check out her playlist, I guarantee you will not be disappointed. She's brilliant and so underrated. 31.5.2020
I saw her live two weeks ago! It's so worth it!!! She (and her voice) hasn't aged one bit. Truly a remarkable woman and such a powerful voice.
Don't know how often I heard Elton John sing "Don't let the sun go down on me" but it seems I never listened to the words. Thanks Bettye, you made me listen to every syllable...

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you . I play saxophone and your sound has been a big inspiration for me:
She is fantastic! I already know who she is. One of Detroit's forgotten heros overshadowed by Janis Joplin.
She sings Joplin under the table.

Wow. That is all.
She reminds me Asaf Avidan! She has a great voice and stage presence!!!
If I had been in the front row I’d have had a heart attack.
She has a singing voice like Tina Turner. I like it!

Nights in White Satin.
Wow
There is so chief person
Sound of a strong black woman singing her heart out
Auntie serving a little Mavis Staples for me
Very astute observation.
🙏🏿💚❤️
Idk what exactly it is but her voice and the way she sing reminds me of Ruth Brown

You are a joker. Artist are peips that take advantages on their defaults and completely induce it in their works and expression 👍
You got jokes, this woman is a disciple of Nina! Check your soul meter, it’s low.
Bettye is what Nina aspired to be.
