The thing is, Marissa Jaret Winokur created that voice for the specific character. She has called it "the Tracy Turnblad voice". That's just how she imagined the character, not actually how she sings.
She originated this so shut up honestly! She's amazing and they wanted a high pitched tone!! Side note, does anyone else notice Shoshana Bean! So cool seeing her on stage before she became a mega star!
I love this version. You know why? It fits with the John Waters aesthetic of the original, it's fun and cheesy and it works. Yes, Nikki Blonski's version is amazing, but this suits the movie and character perfectly
your so true! but that's why i love musicals so much. you can interpret the characters how ever you want, and see different people preform their interpretations
This is easily the best Tracy. The voice is perfect, the oh oh ohs she does are 10 times better than any other person to play the role. A well deserved tony.
François Bessing they all have different I terpretations. I haven't seen at many Broadway versions, but they're all slightly different. That's the beauty if Broadway, no one is "the one"
Hearing Marissa sing makes me wish I did see her and Harvey Fierstein perform at the Hollywood Bowl five years ago as Tracy and Edna. She does have a beautiful voice in fact she should do a duet with Idina Menzel (Elphaba, Elsa)
I love when You Tube watchers express opinions so fervently, as though a postage size clip meant for another medium fully embodies a performance. Having seen Broadway shows for nearly half a century, I would rank this performance at the top of the most enjoyable.
Enough of giving Marissa crap. This isn't how she actually sings. They wanted the high pitch squeaky voice for Tracy and Marissa killed it. She's even said in videos where she was scared that she couldn't do the Tracy voice. I LOVE her, and she didn't win the tony for nothing...
+cm1727 I actually didn't see Marissa play Tracy but I've seen her in a few other things including Fever Pitch with Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon. However, I do like to one day travel back to 2002.
cm1727 Which means Marissa will be out of the picture with a new "daughter" for Harvey to call his own unless they bring her into the cast in some other way shape form or fashion.
Marissa has said before that her and the vocal coach actually trained/molded her voice to sound like that cuz that's what they wanted for the character. So it was at least purposeful.
@ComedianDivo1 Tracy is supposed to be a little nasal, but I agree about the "Oh, oh, oh's". She actually looks like she's straining to make that noise. It can't be good for her voice...
she's a cancer survivor , she wasn't sure if she was gonna be able do it , but after officially finding out she was in the clear she decided do the show...
I'm sure that A) the Broadway version is probably overall better than the movie in terms of plot and such and B) This isn't the singer's "real" voice and she probably has true talent and/or skill. I bet she created this fake voice just to be annoying. However I can't stand this voice oh my gosh. I'll go back to the movie version. And no I didn't come here with the intent of hating. I came here to listen to the original which I have never heard before and just happened to not enjoy it.
Don't get me wrong i love marissa i think she a really good tracy but no where near the best............i know that tracy has to be a little nasal but you can't tell when she's singing or taking the piss
Everyone getting mad in the comments bc some people are saying they don’t like the way she sings it needs to sit down and calm their damn tits. Yes, we fucking get that it’s “how she was told/decided to play the character” and sure some of you guys like it because “it’s original and more fitting for the character”. And “that’s not her real voice it’s just how she sang it”. And that’s real cool, great, fantastic. That doesn’t mean that everyone who listens to it is going to fucking like it, people have different tastes and opinions. And while I’m glad some people love it, and I’m glad they’re able to enjoy it and I appreciate her performance (something I could never personally do), and I admire her ability to portray a character so convincingly and I’m sure she’s a very talented and amazing performer, I personally hate this version. I find the voice annoying (even though I’m aware it’s probably not her real singing voice), and the whole “oh, oh, oh” bit nearly unbearable. I’m sure that doesn’t reflect upon the performer’s abilities, and it’s not a personal attack against her, it’s just not my cup of tea and if I never had to hear it again, I would be appreciative.
I know this isn’t Marissa’s actual voice, but I think the movie version of Hairspray is better. That’s just my opinion. I mean Marissa still did an amazing job. I just prefer the other one.
Tickle MeFancy Marrissa originated the role, you dumb ass. This is how this song was MEANT to be heard. She also won a Tony award for her portrayal as Tracy in 2003. But go on an explain to us all how she ruined the role she originated.
Jennifer Jackson lmaoo the movie was made 5 years after the broadway performance. Marissa was asked to sound like this because she's playing a character. Don't fall for the studio edited stuff the movies give you versus raw uncut talent that broadway provides
@@Jenbrinkerjackson you should have done your research before making yourself sound like a total idiot. Lol this is the original Tracy. Nikki came after her
Ugh.. London cast is So much better.. And I know she was told and taught to sing like this for this song but come on she sounds like she's constipated or something..
Watch Nikki Blonsky sing this song and you'll hear the difference. The main issue I have with this is that instead of singing "Oh, Oh, Oh" she literally uses her throat to make this glottal stop every time and it sounds like "Uh-Uh-Uh" and the whole song is way in her nose. I just can't believe she got an original role on broadway sounding like that.
+Sophie K I've seen Nikki do it. She's great but it's different because she was in the movie, not the stage version doing the show 8 times a week. They wanted Marissa to sing like this because it fits tracys personality and she's even said in interviews how she would be worried if she would loose the Tracy voice some nights. I mean she won the tony for this role...
Someone saw her in American beauty and thought she was appropiate. So sad character singing has been dropped for "sounding beautiful" in musical theatre.
HOW? she originated it she's the first person to sing this song publicly she set the standards and the performers who don't follow them ruin it not her.
The thing is, Marissa Jaret Winokur created that voice for the specific character. She has called it "the Tracy Turnblad voice". That's just how she imagined the character, not actually how she sings.

+Lee GaryB I really have to agree with you on that
your so true! but that's why i love musicals so much. you can interpret the characters how ever you want, and see different people preform their interpretations
Grace Wenner That's a swell way to put it
Lee GaryB this is Broadway that's why lol
Not for me.
This is easily the best Tracy. The voice is perfect, the oh oh ohs she does are 10 times better than any other person to play the role. A well deserved tony.
Excuse me and excuse me some more but this IS Tracy Turnblad. Every other attempt at casting is an attempt to get close to Marissa. unbelievable.
She won a Tony for this
Thank GOSH!

+Manuel Orozco samee I wish it was possible to go back to 2002 to see the OBC of hairspray
cm1727 True. Good thing is Harvey Fierstein is reprising Edna in NBC's Hairspray Live this December.
+Manuel Orozco yes VERY happy for that
cm1727 Which means Marissa will be out of the picture with a new "daughter" for Harvey to call his own unless they bring her into the cast in some other way shape form or fashion.
Marissa has said before that her and the vocal coach actually trained/molded her voice to sound like that cuz that's what they wanted for the character. So it was at least purposeful.
And she won the tony... Get u one, then talk to her!
What year was this.
I love how she's wearing links ring in this haha
love her voice😍!!!!
This ridiculous voice is THE Tracy voice to me.
maybe cuz thats the way she wanted to do the character, and in my opinion, it fits the character perfectly with her personality and life.
i love it im obseed
Amazing! Thanks for posting x
She is so good!!!
that's how the Oh, Oh, Oh's are supposed to be.
@ComedianDivo1 She apparently created the voice specifically for Tracy.
The One, The Only Marissa Janet Winokur! Brilliant!
Delightful!!!!!
amen to that
@ComedianDivo1 Tracy is supposed to be a little nasal, but I agree about the "Oh, oh, oh's". She actually looks like she's straining to make that noise. It can't be good for her voice...
Is it just me or does she sound (and look) like she's choking when she goes "Oh, oh, oh"?!?
She does. It’s so weird.
at 1:44 which one is Shoshana??
Thats part of the character. and the personality. She's playing it to perfection. Clearly u dont know much about what this part represents.
@ComedianDivo1 she was the original tracy on broadway
they more be better with the singing, but the OBC fits the characters and did them better than they did.
Not only that but she beat Bernadette Peters as Mama Rose in Gypsy. Really shows her talent doesn't it
Not sarcastic I swear I love her
Good Riot, Baltimore.
She was supposed to be like that. She is the original Tracy anyway.
the "oh oh oh"s are really uncomfortable...
it’s like she’s insulating the original singer..
@@shayshay2503 she IS the original singer for Good Morning Baltimore lol
Are you serious? Well then if she was diagnosed with Cancer why did she go on Broadway? Then it could always spread because your doing too much.
she's a cancer survivor , she wasn't sure if she was gonna be able do it , but after officially finding out she was in the clear she decided do the show...
Shoshana Bean. That's all.
I'm sure that A) the Broadway version is probably overall better than the movie in terms of plot and such and B) This isn't the singer's "real" voice and she probably has true talent and/or skill. I bet she created this fake voice just to be annoying.

And no I didn't come here with the intent of hating. I came here to listen to the original which I have never heard before and just happened to not enjoy it.
The directors wanted the voice as an ode to the original 1960s movie. Shes actually stated she was scared to do the voice
Omg, Shoshana Bean before she became a well-known star!
I sorry her singing reminds me of my sisters singing before she could sing
This is not how she actually sings lol. She does this voice specifically for Tracy. Also she originated the role sooo
Tracy is my zodiac sign
I totally agree. I always hated her versions. It is majorly lacking.
her cancer went away. and then she got the part.
Don't get me wrong i love marissa i think she a really good tracy but no where near the best............i know that tracy has to be a little nasal but you can't tell when she's singing or taking the piss
Oh oh oh. 😬😬😬😬
leanne jones is the best. THE BEST
the oh oh oh was dumb as hell
oh my god. it sounds like a chicken when she's oh, oh, oh 'makes
o.o
I Love her. :O

This one is quite annoying. I like the movie better
I know this isn’t Marissa’s actual voice, but I think the movie version of Hairspray is better. That’s just my opinion. I mean Marissa still did an amazing job. I just prefer the other one.
i dont like oh,oh,oh...... so sad
Its supposed to be "oh oh oh" i can't even begin to understand what she's doing with her face and voice...
I HATE how she sings "oh, oh, oh". It's awful!
thanks for ruining my favourite hairspray song
Tickle MeFancy Marrissa originated the role, you dumb ass. This is how this song was MEANT to be heard. She also won a Tony award for her portrayal as Tracy in 2003. But go on an explain to us all how she ruined the role she originated.
Vinny Dupree No. Nikki Blonski originated it. This is based on the John Waters musical. Dumbass.
Jennifer Jackson lmaoo the movie was made 5 years after the broadway performance. Marissa was asked to sound like this because she's playing a character. Don't fall for the studio edited stuff the movies give you versus raw uncut talent that broadway provides
The John Waters film, you mean. The movie musical came after the broadway musical. Nikki Blonski didn't originate anything, Marissa was first.
This is really bad. How did she land this part? This is awful.
This isn't how she actually sings. She sang like this for the part of Tracy, it's suppose to be the high squeaky voice.
Watch Nikki Blonsky sing this song and you'll hear the difference. I love this show but she ruined it
HOW? she originated it she's the first person to sing this song publicly she set the standards and the performers who don't follow them ruin it not her.
+Bwayinanchorage Yeah and every fan of this musical should know it by now.
She ruined it... with her Tony? I don’t think you really know this show, lol.
... She needs to be less nasally...
It's uh uh oh not ew ew ew
her voice that she’s recreating is the worst one i’ve heard. when she’s says “oh” it sounds like she’s insulting the original singer..
lol she is the original singer..
