When I first saw this I was so shocked with the transition between the bed and dancing on the street lol. Great prop design!!
If you look closely at the beginning you can see that the shot of her in the window is a picture
the stand up bed is common in almost every theater production of hairspray.

It’s more probably the perspective of the camera. Then they just farted away the bed room. They do the same thing on stage but it doesn’t look as smooth because of perspective.

The music in Hairspray is that rare Broadway score where you can’t help but love at least almost every song

Maddie Baillio will always be my favorite Tracy Turnblad. Her voice is cute and bright, and her acting perfectly encapsulates everything Tracy stands for. (Not to mention she's absolutely beautiful!)

Such a fun song... And her voice... Perfection for this.
I love how they have the "divine pet food" next to a pink flamingo. It's a good nod to the fact that John Waters, who also made a movie called "pink flamingos" created Hairspray. Edna, Tracy's mom, was played by a drag queen named "Divine" in the original movie from 1988 and they were often casted in Waters movies. They were also in "pink flamingos".
And don't forget the "Waters Plumbing" sign! I love all the little shoutouts to the original movie in this set design.
This song is my therapy, happy pill. Every time, when i feel anxious, sad, and almost resulting into depression, I'll just listen to this song. ❤️❤️❤️

maybe this was just filmed in an area where it's dark in the morning in winter? like, where i live(which is Canada so not the same but still) during winter when driving to school in the morning it's way darker than in the morning
Well they were shooting live and it aired at night, they were using full studio lots so that's why its dark

This will go down as an all time favorite memory when I went to watch the entire thing live as member of the audience during “You Can’t Stop the Beat” and The Corny Collins Show. Then that same year my high school show-choir did the Hairspray Live medley for our competition in Orlando and I can’t remember if we got first or second place but still on of the cool things I’ve seen/done

There's a lot of easter eggs in this song so let me just break it down for you guys.
In the first shot of the town there is a plumbing company called "Waters Plumbing" which is a easter egg for "John Waters".
Theres a place that sells Crabs called "Baltimore Crabs" which is the title where Velma wins aka. "Miss Baltimore Crabs".
Theres a pet food shop called Divine Pet Food which is a easter egg for one of the actors of the Original Hairspray aka. Divine who plays Edna in the Original 1988 Hairspray and there is a Pink Flamingo next to it which is another easter egg for the other movie for "Pink Flamingos" which is another movie that Divine Starred in.

There are some references in those store signs. Of course you have the Divine and Pink Flamingos reference. Water's Plumbing is for John Waters the creator of Hairspray. And there are other references too.
Also, as a Baltimore native, I can't say I ever seen a mountain in the city.
And if you know about Divine, that store sign is an extra gross reference which I will not mention here. It's a pretty clever joke. Haha.

This was broadcast live on the NBC television network on December 7, 2016 from Universal Studios in Los Angeles. It was dark outside at that time--8 pm or so--and other scenes were produced on sound stages using artificial light.

Still wondering how the bed scene at the beginning works.
Many professional showings of Hairspray have the actress on a platform with the duvet stitched to it. In this case, it's a collapsible backdrop and she's holding the duvet. This production cost thousands of dollars so I wouldn't put it past the folks at NBC to do something like this
