I'm sorry but tin foil and sand paper just don't cut it. (pardon the pun;)
If you want sharp scissors you need to actually remove the blunt edge and for my money a sharpening stone is the way to go.
I hope after watching this video you will feel confident to give this a try. I feel really great about maintaining my own tools!
Wet stones are readily available at retailers like hardware stores and specialty kitchen stores. Amazon has them as well.
However, I'm not going to leave any links because I've only used second hand ones and so it makes it difficult to recommend a brand when I don't actually know what mine is. And I simply can't recommend things I haven't used.
Today, lets focus on tips and technique!

As a carpenter with over 35 yrs experience sharpening all-sorts (and a RUclips addict), I can honestly say that this video is Superb!
Wow! That is high praise indeed! Thanks so much for watching.
Hi Stephanie, I am an Old knife maker/Jeweler and am going to teach my barber Young lady to sharpen shears with an angle holding device and small electric powered polishing machine I built in my shop, she is a single Mom and wants to learn so I have studied up here on YT to show her the right way to get started and avoid the pitfalls,,,,wanted to show her other ladies that are sharpening now, so Thank you. Best Regards.
Thanks so much for watching David!
On the topic of fabric, this is the best video for sharpening scissors. No machine, no tin foil. This is on par with the cabinet makers sharpening chisels and planes, and although this is one of four steps, they are chopping hard wood.
Two things, the higher grits will make the blade sharper and sharper and the sharper it is, the longer it will stay sharp. Under a microscope, 3000 grit leaves the edge like a phone book torn in half, but the 10,000 or 20,000 (it feels like paper) looks sharp!
The second thing is there is a benefit to sharpening, flattening actually, the flat side. It's half the bevel after all and might have burrs or nicks, and it's dead simple to do. Just lay it flat, put a light pressure and 3 or 4 strokes, you're done, and you can see the shiny edge right away. That's all, I enjoyed this video, very well done.
Wow great! Thanks for adding your tips 🙂
3000 grit stone is considered a polishing stone and you really don’t need to go much beyond that level of grit for shears. If you go up to 10k or 20k grit, you’ll loose a lot of the bite for cutting fabrics. For planing wood, that would more appropriate, or for Japanese sushi knives.
I do woodworking and see no reason to go above 1000 grit on all of my hand tool
I've been actively friggin around with sharpening for the last 12 months. I could have just watched this video and learned everything I know now. Excellent content and presentation. Thank you.
Thanks so much for watching!!
I like how you explained things so we better understand not only the how, but the why. I believe I understand better how to actually sharpen my scissors now. Thanks!
Thank you so much for making this video! You explained everything so well and so concisely. The permanent marker trick is absolute gold. 🏆
Thanks. Your video actually helped a lot compared to all the other scissor sharpening videos that I watched.
Thank God finally found someone who does it the normal way and not tin foil. Folks tin foil does nothing I tried it for the hell of it. Thanks love this vid
Thanks so much Raven ❤️

Your welcome
I am glad you mentioned how inside surface should not be touched. That is how you will damage the scissor. 👍👍👍
Great vided!! Perfect timing for me. I have lots of really nice sewing sissors from my grandmother that I don't trust to just anyone to sharpen. I ordered a stone and am going to work on learning to sharpen on some cheaper sissors in the house and get some experience before I tackle the old really nice ones. I'm very excited to learn to do this myself!
Good for you Becky!
Good idea, I think I will practice on some old cheaper scissors before I try to sharpen my heavy metal ones. Thanks!
This is the video I revisit every few months....thank you for sharing this witchcraft❤
You are so very welcome! I'm happy to share. Thanks for watching❤️
Thank you so much you just saved me a lot of money. And now my three dull shears are sharp.😁
That's fantastic!
Thanks for being very clear! Great video.
Thanks so much! I'm glad you found it helpful.
Thank you!! Very helpful information & and your presentation is awesome!!
Thank you so much! ♥️
Really good video all round. Thanks so much 😊
Best video for sharpening. Thanks for posting
This is awesome! Thanks for showing this!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Fantastic! Exactly what I was looking for: a quick but thorough tutorial on why and how to use a water whetstone. I’m going to use some old general purpose scissors first to practice. Then I’ll move on to some of my garden tools so they’re ready for spring!
Thanks for watching Kristen!
Fantastic! Now that's what I call a handy hint! Thank you!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching ♥️
Thank you very clear an ffectivevdemostration!
thanks so much..very helpful
Bravo .Thank you for the no nonsense overview Stephanie.
Just a small point. I’ve been told that soaking the stone overnight is the go. But what do I know haha. Not much
Thank you I love how you explain how a scissors actually works:-)
Like your idea using the sharpie.
Thanks! Another things to add to my “gotta get around to do” list.
Would you suggest doing this on a not so new pair first?
Yes! I definately started on the pair that I cared the least about ♥️
Thanks. This was really helpful especially knowing if your inherited stone is an oil or water stone. Aren't a lot of sissors made with stainless steal blades though? Is it effective to try to shappen stainless steel?
Thanks Sage. Yes you can absolutely sharpen stainless. We sharpen all of our kitchen knives and all but one is stainless (the other is carbon steel). Titanium bonded can be sharpened too. They will hold an edge longer than stainless but eventually they need to be sharpened.
Thank you so much finally someone answered questions I had
Awesome! Happy to help.
Excellently expressed in depth!
At 7:24 minutes: Tripping.
This is amazing, thank you so much!
Your welcome Kimberly! Thanks for watching!
Thank YOU ❗
Excellent video
I'm glad I watched this ✂️ : )
Thanks Dawn!❤️
We get it, you cook. Just kidding - what a high quality video. Thank you, and wonderful job.
Lol thanks so much!
I learn a lot, you really went into detail with it, and I'm so glad because it makes me understand the process. I tried so many thing to sharpen my scissors but it doesn't work, I bought fiskars sharpener, still don't work, I plan to try on stone, but I don't have it a home, I have at my workplace so I have to wait since its weekend, I'll try fiskars again, because that thing is expensive I'll need to give it a shot, thought don't have high hope for it...
Hey! Thanks so much for watching. Good luck with your scissors
@@StephanieRubletz I did and it work, but it become dull again, it was really dull before I sharpen it, but like it went back tu dull after sharpen it last night, I only did it for a short while...
Hmmm, I'm not sure. That could be the quality of the steel in the scissors or it could be what you are cutting. Anything with sequins will dull scissors super fast. Also polyester will dull them faster than cotton. Especially polyester fleece or faux fur. Those are the only ideas I have of why they are dulling so fast.
@@StephanieRubletz well my mom was the last using it, she was using it for a thick fabric, since I only sharpen it for a short while, maybe was the case, I'll try sharpen it again once my stone arrive(bought one for my home), but I'm buying a new pair of scissors just in case...
Tyfs its alot of money too shapering scissors around here .
I just strop mine with leather and green compound and they stay scary sharp for most of a 12 hour shift …you explained sharpening in a much easier way to grasp way than literally every guy on RUclips who makes/sharpens knives ..thanks…..I’m trying to keep them so sharp I just drag them across the fabric without the chomp chomp action I also cut thick plastic bags in that manner luck I can make a cut and rip the rest .
Ooh! Good call on the strop! Thanks for watching♥️
Here is a tip if you don't own sharpening stones. Take your nail files to grind the angle and remove the grinding marks from the factor and wrap some 1000 grit sandpaper around the file and draw it on the bevel 10 times. This will give you a nice edge without all of the fuss.
Great tip! Thanks!
Haya. The way you described the scissors was like poetry :) Thanku for sharing on how you sharpen your scissors. :)
Thank you! You're so sweet ♥️
@@StephanieRubletz :) :)
Aluminum and sand paper didn't work for me. In fact they became much duller and didn't cut anything. So happy to find you. Going to try this and will let u know how it worked for me. Hopefully I can do it as well as you did. Am a little scared to do this.
Thanks Ana! Good luck! It takes some practice but you'll get it❤️
@@StephanieRubletz I did it and it worked! Thank yo so very much for your help. Now I have the courage to do some others too. Love the magic marker trick.
Hey good job!!!
Very good video! To those who think it’s too long-winded, go find a 30 second video (you won’t find one that’s any good). Every word is valuable instruction. Thanks!
Thanks so much!
I am left-handed so scissors do not last very long for me they don't stay sharp thank you very very much for the info and a great tip because it helps so much thank you once again
the most difficult thing is to keep the right angle
can I use Sand paper
that was great. thanks
Thanks for watching Jayne ♥️
Good Info!!!
Thanks Zina! Have a great weekend ♥️
Just FYI, at 8000 grit and above, is mostly for polishing the blade. In most cases it’s bragging rights when a blade can be looked at with a magnifying glass and no scratches can be seen. LOL I know, ya don’t have to say it. I use 12000 grit and above for my straight edge that I use for shaving. I can yes this is overkill but it sure is fun lol.
Good to know! Thanks!
This is great! But I think I’ll do the paper scissors first. 😉
You should probably tell the men that post a vid with the bck n fort motion crap that this is the right way and they are doing it the wrong way and it's wrong information that they are showing.
Thanks a million! Your video is exactly what I needed! It is very informative, helpful, and upbeat! Cheers!
Glad to hear it! Thanks for watching Missy ❤️
Thanks! I’m going to be sharpening all of my scissors today and this is the best video I’ve seen so far. :)
Awesome, thanks! Glad I helped.
Very good video . Way better than cutting tinfoil 👍
Thank you!
Silver Sparks: So much stuff to sharpen scissors.
I never found tinfoil or sandpaper to do anything.
😀
I do woodworking, I sharpen everything!
100%
"I'm the person who is in the middle of the project and my scissors are making me angry and they need to be sharp.... 👁👄👁 now"
⚰
Thank you Jesus! Finally a woman does a sharpening scissors video that is informative, time efficient and comical to boot! Fabric scissors were near extinction during a rushed project the other day and I used your insight and technique to get those bad boys up and slicing away again in a flash! Thank you!!
Awesome! I'm so glad this helped❤️

Judging by the color these could be naniwa 1000/3000 stones
Cool! Thanks Jef!
Talk shop
This was extremely long winded and could have been a 3 minute video. Also, put the stone on the edge of a table so the handle has room and isn't blocked by the table itself.
Thanks for the feedback violet. In future, you can use the time stamp at the top of the description to skip the chit chat.
Oh My God - you talked for 10 minutes of a 12 minute video before you put scissors on stone.
Yep sure did. Because...
1) A two minute video isn't going to help me in the algorithm Ken.
2) I have viewers that have watched me for years that like a friendly chat.
3) I make videos that I like to make. You don't have to watch them.
4) your feedback (however abrupt and rude the delivery) helps me further in the algorithm so... Thanks!
Next time you don't like how long someone talks in their video, be sure to check for a time stamp in the description that will jump you to the demo. There was one in this video.
Whew too much intro talking, bye
Talk talk talk ..just start sharpening
Too much talking !
Too long
too much talking only.
Are you trying to be helpful or hurtful? Next time maybe use the time stamp in the description to jump to the tutorial. That's literally their entire purpose.
Terrible
Talk talk talk ..just start sharpening
Or maybe you could just hit the time stamp located in the description to skip right to the tutorial rather than supposing I need to tailor my video to you personally....🤷
