I’ve been sharpening knives for years having been a meat cutter. From there, everyone I knew wanted me to sharpen their knives. Inevitably, scissors were showing up. I refused an attempt to sharpen them but I always wanted to try. Because of your detailed video, I’ll be prepared for the avalanche of scissor requests from family. Thank you for putting this information together.

Or you can always just get stroppy, and remove the burr that way.
When I was a kid, I once sharpened my mother's scissors with a file and an improvised strop. I told her it wasn't perfect because I didn't have good files or a decent strop.
A few weeks later, she gave me a good set of metalworking files and a leather strop. She said it was just to say thank you for sharpening the scissors, but the implied message was that sharpening scissors was now one of my tasks around the house. 🤣

Thank you for making this video, as I'm studying the easiest way to sharpen my beloved carbon steel scissors, which happily cut paper for decades before they went very dull, particularly exacerbated by my previous attempt to sharpen them.
(Having nothing to do with sharpening scissors:) Because movement re-education is my professional work as well as my personal work for my own self, I would like to warn you that your low forward-head posture is going to cause neck/shoulder issues you won't have if you keep your head more perched on top of your spine. Many blessings to you, and hold your head on high!

I'm a retired paramedic. One thing I didn't skimp on was my trauma shears. I had 3 pair of German made shears. I always carried a pair of cheap bandage scissors on me, just in case a nurse asked to borrow my scissors. Nurses know that paramedics always have scissors on them. Paramedics know that nurses usually want to borrow your trauma shears to cut paper. I got tired of asking what they wanted to cut with them, and then arguing over why paper was bad for them. That's why I carried the cheap bandage scissors. Then everyone was happy.
I wasn't entirely convinced that paper would really dull them that badly, but I kind of needed them to stay sharp. You need good, sharp scissors to cut through boot leather, when necessary. If it was a biker's boots you cut off, you also needed a good place to hide. LOL!

40+ years ago, I trained as an upholsterer before I trained as a joiner. We used sharp scissors on a daily basis. We sharpened them by hand as one would a chisel or plane. THEN...out came the 'serra-sharp' scissors; self sharpening scissors designed for the upholstery trade at first but probably found other outlets. They had one straight blade and one serrated blade. They worked somewhat but after extended use, still needed hand sharpening on the straight blade - they were not much good at sliding through fabrics. I now always sharpen scissors as we did back in those old days; make sure they are not slack, have an equal slight curvature on each blade so that they cut from heel to tip and have a very keen edge from heel to tip. They should sound as if they are rasping against each other as you cut - and they should cut cleanly right to the very tip.

Most scissors come new, with a burr. As far as I am concerned, that burr needs to be removed, for the same reason we remove burrs from bench chisels and plane irons. You get better performance from them. Fiskars are one big name company, but their scissors have a huge burr on the bevel side, not on the flat side. If you remove that, performance is greatly improved, I use a fine hone, like above 1000 grit, and then I use a more coarse stropping grit, the black stuff from the big box stores, and I apply that to some plywood. You don't need 60,000 grit stropping compound for scissors, except maybe for the Gingher scissors. I do have one pair of Gingher scissors, and they even have a tiny burr. I got some grass nippers and they had about an 80 grit burr on the bevel side of the blade. I got rid of that, and they cut with no effort.
As for paper, a fussy sewer will notice if you cut paper with their Gingher scissors. Another thing about the paper, I was visiting my best friend's dad. It came up in conversation about using paper of any kind to clean glasses. The resounding results from Google said not to use any type of paper for cleaning your glasses. Apparently all of it is some what abrasive and repeated use will cause scratches on your lenses.

    • @LChalifoux
      @LChalifoux Год назад

Well, I do it when scissors just need a light touch up - and it works really well! There are definitely lots of ridiculous "genius" (🙄) tips out there that are just plain rubbish. I didn't believe it either, until another jewelry maker showed me on the Joyce Chen kitchen snips we commonly use to cut non-ferrous annealed metals, up to about 18ga. That convinced me, and I've been using it ever since.
Give it a whirl sometime, and see if it works for you. Here's how I do it, in case anyone is curious:
Take a piece of regular kitchen foil that's about twice the length of your scissor blades plus an extra 2 inches, and fold it in half (cut edge to cut edge). Then just snip snip snip all along the edge opposite the fold, as if you were cutting a fringe. No need to be fussy about it, just get make sure to open the scissors wide enough to get at the full length of the blades. You'll hear and feel the blades get sharper as you go. The folded edge keeps (most) (some) of the cut strips from flying all over the place.
I usually test the scissors first on something that doesn't cut well; since I'm already in the kitchen, I find a piece of paper towel is good for this purpose. Then I test them again after sharpening, and marvel at the difference.
Again, this is not going to work if your blades are a mess! And it probably won't work on them crazy new-fangled super-hard metal alloys with titanium or whatever. But it is a very convenient, quick, and easy way to do a touch-up. Plus you can easily get the entire length of the blade, which is nice.

When I was the foreman of a aluminum Foundry the operator of the cutoff bandsaw didn't want to allow a worker to make an occasional cut on wood because it would dull his blade. Technically true; the wood contains some silica, but the effect is trivial. I put an end to that nonsense.
Now if you want to make All the Right Moves and impress the cute chicks, you should never place a rag over a solvent can and inverted it in order to wet the rag. This allows for backwash and can contaminate the solvent. Yes I know, your rag was clean but it's still not a good habit.

Thanks for the explanations... it would be interesting to see a video on manual sharpening (without other devices such as a mini-grinder, etc.) of the small scissors in the manicure kit, especially the part at the tip, where they have a slight curvature due to their "construction" .
