I had a very bad experience for my two years because the leadership pushing that same idea, brow-beating everyone who didnt show that 110% mentality. It has taken the better part of two decades to let the hurt go, and to be honest, I still harbor some resentment still. But, I know it was an example of what happens when you forget the Lord's way, and I at least consider it a blessing to know it.
In the MTC in 2014 a general authority came and gave a talk and said that we should give 100% and expend every bit of energy we had so that we came home "exhausted."
I thought the same! And I’ve had to spend a few years recovering from my mission because of it. Self-compassion is so much healthier than perfectionism! 10/10
Mosiah 4:27: “And see that all these things are done in wisdom and order; for it is not requisite that a man should run faster than he has strength. And again, it is expedient that he should be diligent, that thereby he might win the prize; therefore, all things must be done in order.”
My ADHD brain basically loves to min-max. If you don’t know what that means, basically I have a really hard time doing anything just the right amount. It’s always too much or too little, and it’s really hard for me to get anything just right. However, I know that it’s okay, because as long as I continue to try my best, the Lord can help me get through anything.
I relate to this!! I was undiagnosed for the longest time and was so frustrated when I kept making the same mistakes no matter how hard I tried. But the Lord always forgave me, and I was confused why He wasn’t more upset with me. Turns out He knew I had ADHD all along XD and that trying harder isn’t nearly as effective with ADHD as trying smarter
Yes! Fellow ADHD brain here! It's only now in my 30s I've made peace with the fact that I'll never function like everybody else and I won't hit the same targets temporally and spiritually like others, but I KNOW that God knows I'm trying and he knows what's in my heart. We've got this!
See everyone? God loves you, and doesn't want you to burn out. Love yourself like He loves us even though it's really hard and I have to work on it, too
I found listening to myself and God's guidance helps me avoid burning too hot or cold on my life's priorities. Be appreciative of what you have and where you're at but never complacent.
Wow! There is so many people who need THIS! Isn‘t it wonderful to have prophets of God lead His church to provide timely counsel! Thank you for this much needed message!
Middle East is my second home, work is tough here with only a day break in a week, but I see the Lord's wisdom on setting priorities and keeping life in balance with healthy mind and spirit of which revelation flows freely to have optimal performance.
I have to try really hard to have balance in my life, because I have several mental disabilities, including autism, ocd, add/adhd, depression, anxiety, etc. It's very difficult for me to do things in wisdom and in order, but with the hope that comes from putting my trust in God, I will succeed. We all will have temporary failures, which is okay because it's part of His plan of salvation and exaltation, however He will give us the strength to get up and keep trying. Jesus Christ loves each of us so much, that He gave His life for us, which means that His grace will turn our best effort into success. We don't need to try 150 percent. Showing a lot of love for Him daily is good enough.
Greetings from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia! My name is Petrina. Thank you for posting this insightful video. As an English and Science teacher who is currently in my second year of teaching, I truly needed guidance from it.
We are not required to run faster than we have strength. If we put our trust in the Lord and ask Him for help, He will guide our paths and inspire us to choose the best way to handle our tasks with the most joy and balance. He'll give us more strength to handle our burdens and even send others to give us assistance when needed. I'm so grateful that we have such divine assistance. We just need to do our best, keep our faith strong so we can hear Him when He gives us great advice and guidance.
As a future missionary this is an awesome video! Even doing college in-between an early graduation and a mission I feel like I have to put in 100% of the effort to progress in my classes. This video reminded me of how we progress, line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little there a little, and God is always with us as we strive to be better. You do not need to go into the fields of life with 100% and leave with 0%, instead enter with determination and a goal, step by step, and take a break when you're felling low on energy, eat, exercise, do something. Thank you for this amazing video!
I've been feeling the need for this principle lately. How wonderful that our God, our leaders and our Church understand that we're all striving for balance. The Holy Ghost can help us know what to do and when to do it, and how to shift our priorities & time. I'm thankful for reminder to take time for myself as well, in order to have energy and compassion to serve others. Heavenly Father knows our hearts.
Very good video! It doesn't hurt to always have a friendly reminder have to keep a balance in life. Work time playtime and quiet time with scriptures and prayers. I have found if you are rushing around all day that means you have too many things on your to do list that day. It's time to delete things on your daily list!😞 you can do it. If you don't do it now, the doctor will make you do it later. It's kind of like dropping a ball, sooner or later it's going to hit the ground.
I am a grandmother. Mom of 4 grown within the Church's values. Principles of truth are taught in the best way as a mom. But then you're in a position where you are not as influential. I am so overwhelmed by 13 grandchildren who are far from my own home state. I know I can do good things for my family and they're struggling with this experience of being in the middle of a Pandemic. I am grateful for the wisdom and order that the Doctrine and Covenants talks of. I believe that this was just the right thing for me today! It's great to talk to others about how I feel. Especially since I am in my 60's and live a long way from the Church's Chapel in Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Are you udalizing tech to video chat with your family? I often overlook this tramedous blessing. I have four children too. Keep leaning on the Lord. In all things He Shall direct thee for good.
Beautiful Video Thank You For Sharing This Very Moment With Me🌹I Also Believe In Enjoying The Moment Because You’ll Never Know The Value Of A Moment Until It Becomes A Memory🌹With Much Aloha🌹
My mission Presidente quote me to a scripture said" don't run faster than your strength".. and i remember the word in scripture we are saved after all we can do.. for me as long as i done my work according of what is my capacity..and in balance .. my calling,my family ,my health and my work..as long as i know i done enough in my own strength..and according to the wisdom of God.. and i pray that wisdom of how can i cope all of my obligation and duty..
I love the perspective Brad Wilcox gives in his book ‘The Continuous Atonement’ where he says “we are saved by grace after all WE can do. The WE includes God. He makes the difference.” Try our best, and ask for God’s help with the rest. :)
This whole life experience was never really about the “doing”, but how the doing can change our “being”. The Jews in Jesus day got hung up on the “doing” and it became a stumbling block. We are no different today. Be still, be present in each moment, be mindful. Look inside for the change and growth and beauty that comes from the doing, otherwise all of the doing is pointless. God doesn’t care about your church attendance percentage or temple attendance stats or number of ministering visits. Did you just go through those motions, or did they go through you? Often the Why matters more than the What or the How. Be blessed and may harmony find you.
As a new employee in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints I need to put more effort at my work and have a wisdom to put things in order so that the Lord will bless my family and everyone around us
In the MTC in 2014 a general authority came and gave a talk and said that we should give 100% and expend every bit of energy we had so that we came home "exhausted."
Yeah, I wish leaders would focus less in numbers (specially when they try to encourage missionaries). I can remember my times as a missionary and trying doing everything fast to meet the mission´s goals and yet, having shallow results.
I think there are times when you are able to give that effort and times when you have to focus on yourself. I spent a few years completely focused on finishing my education. The next 6 years I was part of the YW presidency and spent several hours a week serving. The last few years I've been focusing on my mental and physical health because I was diagnosed with PCOS. I also lost my mom to Cancer and I'm trying to help my brother take care of our father. I'm not able to give the same amount of time to the church right now, but I'm trying. Sometimes I wonder if I'm doing enough, but all I can do is what I can do. I haven't refused help that has been requested and I've tried to lift the spirits of those around me when I can. I've tried to share my spiritual breakthroughs to benefit others. I do come home exhausted but sometimes it's just fatigue caused by my chronic illness. I think serving a mission is very different from juggling a family, a job and whatever callings you may have plus your own personal study time.
wow this is beautiful. i just got off of my mission and it’s hard to work, have a social life, go to school, and study daily. but i think this helps me understand “balance” and prioritizing what is most important to Heavenly Father.
thank you. I'm just now getting to the point where I'm thinking its okay if I'm tired on fridays and can't do the dishes. That doesn't mean that theres anything wrong with me :)
That just means you are human. Satan has a tricky way of making us think we are the only ones going through any scenario, but we know better. I'm glad you are seeing things clearer and giving your self some slack. So important.
Am saying a question am a member of the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints but am not in the place where the church is so I want to know how to worship in Sunday at home
Hi Salamatu, thank you for your question. You can contact your Bishop for that information. Many Wards are providing a link for members that want to worship from home.
This is exactly what I need to hear. I have a tendency to go all in on a lot of things at once, which has the end result of nothing getting done and sending me into a funk -- the exact opposite outcome than what I intended! This is a fantastic application of "all things in wisdom and order", and I think I've found a new scripture for my quote board. Thanks for sharing this!
I wished I listened to this sooner. Some days I don't do much, maybe just go fishing and play some games. When I go to bed after these days I feel depressed since I think of all the things I could ha e done. Like talk to my clients, make new clients, do some paperwork, etc. I need to understand it's ok to have a day where in not working 100%. God didn't make us to be workaholics.
I am getting over a cold. It has really put a damper on my work. I can normally accomplish everything I need to do at work, so I have been feeling inadequate but not guilty for the things I had to neglect. I am starting to feel better and can get more things done once again.
Hoping the culture catches up with the counsel asap! Last year at a family member's stake conference, it was taught over the pulpit that, "The Lord doesn't require us to be perfect, but he does require us to be exhausted." That kind of direct counsel in an official meeting is difficult for members to discount or ignore. The attitude that if you're not completely exhausted you're not a good member is still alive and well, but hopefully messages like this one will help.
Well said. Still a lot of nonsense flying around in meetings that was never taught by Christ. He took naps, got away on his own to be mindful, and told us to take no thought for the morrow. He sees us as human beings, not human doings. The Jews in his day got caught in all of the doing and it became a stumbling block to them. We are no different now. Be still, and know that he is God. His burden is “easy and light”.
Can't echo this enough. The "echos" of lionizing extreme sacrifice over the years, kind of run against this kind of measured council. Even the recent run of "hastening the work" kind of cuts agains the message here of "slow and steady wins the race".
This is much needed wisdom. Some days I feel like I have to do everything by myself at the same time to get things done. The reality is I don’t. It’s Ok to let things go at various times or let others do things instead.
This topic has been in the books since the 1800s along with the Internet several decades ago. This is obvious. It is easier to access, if you can afford it.
The idea that best effort doesn’t necessarily mean 100% effort is such a hard idea to wrap our heads around! But I loved that soccer analogy that the best kick isn’t super hard or super soft but rather targeted for the situation. That’s what makes it the best.
Living life with a physical handicap has taught me to take life one step at a time. I'm not a failure if I'm stuck in bed writhing in pain for the afternoon. I'm not a failure if the dishes aren't done every night. I'm not a failure if it takes me a lot longer to do something than another person. All He asks is that we try, and try again tomorrow, and try again each day after that. Maybe we'll fail 10 times, but we haven't truly failed until we stop trying. As for personal goals, please be kind to yourself and others. Change and growth will not happen overnight. They are the product of consistent effort, and I've found that it's better to progress a mere inch every day than a whole foot once a month.
I recently had to cut my work days down from 4 to 3. Yes, I will have less money, but I will have more time for the Lord and the things that matter most. My ability to do, is different from someone else and that’s ok 👌
Thanks for sharing this important video! 🙂 Almost every day people are busy. Some time ago an acquaintance of mine said to me that I should prioritize my time on the most important things first before I do the things that I really want to do. I’m thankful for that he said that to me that time 🙂 We’ve gotten the gift of agency from God. This means that we’re the ones that choose what we want to do in our daily lives.
Also, it’s hard to recognize your limitations and your own goal when you’re looking sideways, comparing yourself to another person. Burnout can also occur when a person pushes themselves well beyond what’s needful simply because they fear they don’t measure up to someone else’s standard. Looking to the Lord and honoring our own limits and accepting our own accomplishments on their own merit/value is one way to find true success and peace. Comparisons will keep a person ever reaching and never resting, always feeling insignificant or running hard to get the next perception of achievement in comparison to another person. Personally, the intrinsically rewarding life spent honoring God feels deeply satisfying in a way that achieving in comparison to others doesn’t provide for me.
I needed this counsel. I'm guilty of always giving the maximum and eventually burning myself out. I'm grateful for this video that has shown me a better way of doing things.
This was fabulous. I appreciate the Church encouraging us to choose wisdom. Another resource is the book, "The Power of Stillness" written by Church members.
Thank you for sharing this good advice. I am trying to balance my life between family, work, school, and church but Inget overwhemled sometimes. Thank you for teaching me to do things in wisdom and in order.
It’s hard to hear the Holy Ghost if we are constantly running around to the demands of this world. God loves it when we take quite time to connect with Him. And we will be refreshed by it too.
It's the small and simple things. We are rarely converted through one big life-changing event, but through small acts of daily scripture study, prayer, and service.
That reminds me of Saturday when I was playing cornhole! I was going to toss beanbags into the hole, but I mostly tossed it with too much force, and it was sent flying!
I needed this so much. This came the very moment I needed this. I am breaking down crying and just a mess on my bed the whole night not knowing which things to do first because there are so many things I need to do. Thank you so much.
I really thought I had to be working at 100+% on my mission every day, every second, or I was failing God. This is such a better perspective.
I had a very bad experience for my two years because the leadership pushing that same idea, brow-beating everyone who didnt show that 110% mentality. It has taken the better part of two decades to let the hurt go, and to be honest, I still harbor some resentment still. I think I had the same "problem"... When I got home from my mission I was sick for more than a month.
I thought the same! And I’ve had to spend a few years recovering from my mission because of it. Self-compassion is so much healthier than perfectionism! 10/10
For real! I wish I had figured that out on my mission instead of after. 😆
Mosiah 4:27: “And see that all these things are done in wisdom and order; for it is not requisite that a man should run faster than he has strength. And again, it is expedient that he should be diligent, that thereby he might win the prize; therefore, all things must be done in order.”

I could discount your experience very easily but I don't feel like getting into the semantics of the vague context presented.
@@travismarin2595 You need to chill out with the comments man. The stuff you're saying pushes people away. It's not helping. Calm down.
This is much needed wisdom. Some days I feel like I have to do everything by myself at the same time to get things done. The reality is I don’t. It’s Ok to let things go at various times or let others do things instead.
love this! i’m telling mom this
Very nice video!!
I really need this message, right timing thanks for this wonderful message 😊
Thanks for all you do.
I'm glad the church is finally addressing this topic in a format and communication that is easy to understand and actually accessible.
This topic has been in the books since the 1800s along with the Internet several decades ago. This is obvious. It is easier to access, if you can afford it.
Perfect timing!
I needed this.
This is so timely! Thank you Lord💖✨
The great Exampler... And on the seventh day He rest.
I'm about to leave on a mission, and I feel like this message came at just the right time
Thank you for your comment! Good luck on your mission!
So true! Thank you for your comment!
Wise counsel indeed. Difficult to do, but reasonable boundaries can be managed with flexibility.
I recently had to cut my work days down from 4 to 3. Yes, I will have less money, but I will have more time for the Lord and the things that matter most.
My ability to do, is different from someone else and that’s ok 👌
Great message and visual illustration. Thank you so much!
Thanks for sharing this important video! 🙂
Almost every day people are busy.
Some time ago an acquaintance of mine said to me that I should prioritize my time on the most important things first before I do the things that I really want to do. I’m thankful for that he said that to me that time 🙂
We’ve gotten the gift of agency from God. This means that we’re the ones that choose what we want to do in our daily lives.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, really needed to hear this
Incredible!!
Listen to elder Bernar's talk on how we can only do one thing at a time. Very insightful!
King Benjamin already knew!
Great video, great advice
Well needed and timely reminder!
I so love this counsel! Very much appreciated.
That reminds me of Saturday when I was playing cornhole! I was going to toss beanbags into the hole, but I mostly tossed it with too much force, and it was sent flying!
That is really hard to do, but I thing if we trust in God, we can do it!
I really needed this reminder today. I'm glad the church has this channel.
I needed this so much. This came the very moment I needed this.
I am breaking down crying and just a mess on my bed the whole night not knowing which things to do first because there are so many things I need to do. Thank you so much.
You are telling us needs are uncountable.
Thank you so much! This couldn't have come at a better time for me.
I needed to remember this ❤
Wow! I feel like the person in this video. This was very wise, I feel. I'm going to see if I can apply this
great message, thanks
As a mission president, I would love to see a similar video focused on missionaries and the work they do. It could help many missions around the world
This hit home. Thanks.
