I take a look at the history and evolution of Bugs Bunny (Happy Rabbit / Chungus), the loveable rascally rabbit who defies authority, has a dry, smart-alec witt, and loves a good-hearted prank and wisecrack.
Voiced by Mel Blanc, the man of a thousand voices, as one of Warner Bros. original Looney Tunes (originating in the Merrie Melodies shorts), Bugs Bunny has gone on to become the most used cartoon character ever and, alongside the likes of Santa Clause, Count Dracula and Sherlock Holmes, is one of the most portrayed characters in the history of film.
I take a look at how Bugs evolved alongside Warner Bros. other popular characters, including Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam and more, and how he co-existed and outshone characters from Disney including Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck and creations from Hanna-Barbera.
I discuss how animators changed his look, appearance and personality over time in this brand new series in the same vein as my EXPLAINING DISNEY EVOLUTIONS series.

Bugs Bunny saved Mel Blanc's life irl. When Blanc was in a coma as a result of a car crash, the doctors started addressing Blanc as Bugs Bunny. In a comatose state, Blanc replied as Bugs, and eventually he was pulled out of it. That's a true story.

Without a doubt, I loved the Chuck Jones Bugs Bunny. It was always about Bugs being attacked in his natural environment and his retaliation (of course you realize this means war). And the visual presentation was awesome.

It's too bad "Looney Tunes, Back In Action" bombed... I loved that feature... Been a WB toon fan for 60 years, have seen tons and tons of Bugs and his fellow comedic masterpieces. Mckimson's model sheet from 1943 is unsurpassed.
It's so incredibly well drawn and captures Bugs' personality perfectly.

Thank you! I too thought that was a glaring omission in his development. In fact, the voice isn't really consistent until Bug's 8th appearance.
The single best Bugs Bunny cartoon has to be What's Opera Doc. Shorts like those introduced children to classical music and culture that they could later appreciate as adults. Modern cartoons do nothing to add to cultural significance.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit is one of my favorite films. I didn't know about the stipulation of equal screen time between the characters. I remember that the Daffy/Donald scene was perfect. But the Bugs/Mickey scene was in tune with how Bugs would act, but not so much Mickey. Now it makes more sense of why they chose to do that. I hope a Daffy vid comes out soon, he's my fave!
I like the looney tunes show version of bugs but I have to admit the classic golden age cartoon bugs is still my favorite because that's the bugs bunny i grew up with.

Do anyone remember June Bugs. It was a way for Cartoon Network to celebrate Bugs Bunny.
Wish they could bring that back to show classic Bugs Bunny shorts, the Looney Tunes show, and Wabbit.
Used to watch it every year! I loved Cartoon Network for introducing me to the Looney Tunes, MGM, and Hanna-Barbera cartoons my parents grew up with. And June Bugs always came out on a weekend near summer vacation on June 1st, so it was always a reminder that summer fun was just around the corner!

I prefer both season designs of "The Looney Tunes Show" Bugs, as it mostly reminds me of how he continuously would be refusing es up until the most long running look he’d have. Plus I like how most animated shows change from before to after with their characters.

I am proud to admit that Bugs Bunny is my favorite cartoon character. I love his wit, his confidence (something i dont have, i more Daffy), his sass and his winning attitude wo is afraid to crossdress.
I love him so much, when i had to do an assignment on our favourite character and how it represents cool, i naturally chose Bugs Bunny doing a PowerPoint presentation that ended up being far far too long.

The 1950s era Bugs Bunny is the most definitive of the character. That applies to Porky, Foghorn Leghorn, Tweety, Sylvester and all the recognised Warner characters.

By the 1950s all the Warner characters had reached the final stage of their development, that's why I said the 1950s was the most definitive era of Bugs and all the other characters.

I'm a little surprised that with all this talk about bugs Bunny in the 1990s, there is no mention of his appearance in Gremlins 2. Then again I can hardly blame you as most of that sequence was cut out of the film, which is a darn shame in my opinion.
Didn’t think I’d be as big into the non-Disney stuff because you truly hit a homerun again and again with “Explaining Disney” but this was just as good if not better. Can’t wait to see more and hope you’re going to continue to do the follow-up voice evolution for these as well. I’m sure you’ve got an entire lineup of characters you want to do, but I would LOVE to see the many versions of Tom and Jerry added to the list.
Thanks so much for saying. I was a little nervous going into this one myself, because I have less background in WB history. But with my knowledge of the industry at the time, and the realization that everyone was literally just following / ripping off Disney or were ex-Disney artists, I found it quite easy. And honestly think I had more fun on this than any of the previous ones because of the challenge.

I first heard of Bugs Bunny when I watched Space Jam for the first time and I didn't know it was Bugs. My parents had to explain EVERYTHING about it to me. I love them now.

Honestly I feel they could’ve made the show without using classic characters, but the constant motif of real-life themes being crossed with cartoon conflicts makes for a purely entertaining show! Also, porky is a cannibal and stress-eats pepperoni...like where do you come up with that?

That's interesting. So Bug Bunny had a big character development with his design and his personality. Sounds like a similar sort of thing to Luigi from Super Mario. I'm more familiar with his final design and personality than his early character designs. I found this really interesting. Especially that I've had the Looney Tunes Golden Collection for years (I think probably for 16 years). I thought Bug Bunny early design was a different character.
