Looking forward to being able to release the entire thing coming up soon. I think this radio format could be a lot of fun going forward. Thanks for the opportunity!
During Xmas of 2021 our outside lights were connected to the same outlet as our sprinkler system…around 2 am when the sprinklers went on I guess combined with the lights it tripped the outlet and it wasn’t until that March when I realized the sprinklers had been off since early December…here we are in April 2023 and the yard is finally looking better…now that I found your channel I am excited for the Summer…greetings from Champions Gate, Florida
Perfect timing on this video. Seeing a lot of “What’s wrong with my lawn???? It’s getting brown in areas....” questions on forums and Facebook. 92.3% are simple lack of water. People (including me) often forget to grab the lowest hanging fruit first.
I know this is an old video I hope you see this. I would say my system has 3 sprayers overlapping , on 2 zones. So do I run both zones and measure the overlapping area, or run on zone had measure water of 2 sprayers at overlap point.
if you have overlaps then divide it into each one. So for example, if your front lawn has overlapping of 2 heads across two zoned, you record how long each zone takes to push 1/4"
Great tips. But you can also change nozzles on your heads too as you fine tune each head. I use rainbird and Toro. Nozzle packs are cheap as well as tools to change from say.3.0 gpm to 5.0 gpm or vice versa ..
can we do this on a really sunny hot day? or will the water evaporate from the can too much in the heat/sun? trying to wait for overcast but want to get my sprinklers fixed
Thanks for the great video, Allyn! I was sitting here trying to make sense of the fact that the diameter of the catchment vessel would cause quite a variation in your results... for example, if you used a 5gal bucket instead of a tuna can it would take far longer to fill it up to 1/2". I fired up ye ole' Google machine and found that according to NOAA, the most accurate rain gauge opening is 8", but 4" is still 'quite accurate'. (I'm still left wondering how they arrived at 8" being the standard, but I digress...) I don't have any tuna cans at my house, but I googled that as well and it seems that a 4oz tuna can is about 3 1/16" in diameter, and a 6oz 'salmon' can is 3 7/16" in diameter. I suppose 3-ish inches in diameter is close enough for this type of work. 😊This was just the result of me being curious and satisfying my need to 'figure it out'. That said, if you're using those 10-packs of yellow plastic rain gauges from Jeff Bezos, you may want to do some math to figure out how much 'indicated' rain you need to get an 'actual' half inch in there, if 12.56 square inches of area is 'quite accurate' (pi* r squared-- 3.14*4) and 50.24 square inches is the 'most accurate' (3.14*16).
That April/May drought browned many yards here is central Florida including mine. Many of us were too slow to adjust our watering schedule from the dormant period once the temperatures rose in March.
After measuring your old lawn back in spring, I can conclude you were sitting on 5,000 sq. ft. and you only irrigated the front which was 2,000 sq. ft.
My lawn looks a lot like that first dry one as not only did I not get significant rain in May, but my irrigation well went dry. Need to replace my above-the-ground pump with a submersible for these times when the water table falls. Hydretain helped, but it can only do what it does when there's dew in the morning. Have listened to the Florida Gardening Show since Gill Whitten was the host. Have missed the last two weeks and @The Lawn Car Nut sneaks in. A podcasting I shall go.
The drought in GA was rough these past couple weeks. We're finally getting a TON of rain. My backyard suffered because I didn't water it (I can't afford to and the front yard is the main stage). I did notice that the drought absolutely fried a bunch of weeds I still had in the back and the grass is coming back strong. Best form of weed control...drought stress.
Great info! I'm curious why you put the tuna cans in the middle of the yard? I have issues with the edges of my lawn. The middle is fine. Should I put the cans on the edges of the lawn to measure?
Allyn - I searched and can't locate a video I think I'm remembering - Did you install a soil sensor (hunter or other brand) with your system? If so, do you like it? I have a good system, but I'm always looking for other ways to make it better for the environment, and to save on the water bill. It already adjusts for weather, heat, wind, rain, freezing etc... but no soil sensor. Thoughts?
When putting down the 1/2 inch of water is it better to put it all down at once or take a break? I heard somewhere that it is a good idea to water a 1/4 inch, wait an hr or two for the water to sink in, and then put down the other 1/4 inch.
Hi, I know this comment is a year late, but this is what i do with my Bermuda. I water 2 days a week in the morning. Each watering i put down 1/4 inch waiting 1 hour in-between before i rerun the program again. This way i get the 1 inch a week and ensure deep penetration for the roots to grow. This of course is during the lawn season, during the winter i turn off the system.
How would you recommend accounting for overlap of zones? If the same area is hit by 2 zones, should I aim to have each zone put down 1/2" or the sum of both zones equal 1/2"?
Question about creeping red fescue. I just over seeded my lawn after aeration a week ago, and I am seeing these little leaf blooms all over along the path of the spreader. I am stumped as to what these are and all my net research is yielding nothing. Thoughts?
Question regarding shading: If a tree blocks out the sun on half of a zone and the other half is full sun then the full sun area should get more water to deal with evaporation, correct? Would the best practice be to water the full sun area more by changing the head so that the shaded area gets 1 inch per week and the full sun gets say 1.25 inches per week?
I have soakers underground in my parkways and I know that these have to run longer but I don't trust them. What is a better way to use the tuna cans with hand watering or with a cheap above ground rotating sprinkler? Any help would be great!!! Thanks and great video
Al I finally got an irrigation system installed this past week and I knew my lawn would take a hit. So my question is what can I do to get it back to how it was before (without all the ruts and grooves) it was fairly level before and I want that back ASAP . I have (had lol) the best looking in my neighborhood and I gotta get that look again. Love all your content love the channel 👍🏾
Wouldn't mind a sprinkler system where you put in info such as Zone, Zone Layout, how many sprinklers in the zone, Sprinkler head, which Nozzle type is in the sprinkler head, how much water do you want to put down, then based on that sort of information the sprinkler system will make water timing recommendations to put down the amount of water you want per day, or per your schedule. Then, if it were to rain, it would take that rainfall amount and adjust your next timing for the next scheduled day/week.
Allyn, do you have any experience with Hunter's Hydrawise Smart System? Maybe you could shoot a video on how to program a smart system with weather triggers, etc to maximize water savings while still delivering 1/2 inch every three days.
I'm in a similar situation. Some of my sprinkler heads are broken so I have certain areas that don't get enough water. I barely know a thing or 2 about lawn care 😂 let alone messing around with my sprinkler system. So I bought a rotating sprinkler that attaches to my hose. Problem solved. Now if I could only figure out how to get someone to install a 2nd water faucet in my backyard so I don't have to haul around my 100 ft hose constantly back and forth that'd be great 😂
With me being a "Pacific Northwesterner" I would have been in the Pool! Many thanks on the "Lawn Jargon"! Take care Mr. Florida, 🤓 -Thomas Western Washington State
I have a gen2 rachio, not much different then gen 1 other then looks. I like mine a lot. My lawn looks dead and alive at the same time. Not sure if I'm under watering or not
Hey Allen, how much is your water bill every month with all that watering? Water here in middle,TN is pretty expensive. I have a buddy that waters a lot and has $200 to $300 water bills during the summer. I love green grass but can't pay that much for water.
I'm around $200 in the dry season but in the rainy season down to 80 and we are about there now. I only have to water heavy for about a month each spring and again for a month in fall. Other than that nearly nothing.
I have been in the Tampa Bay area since I was 6 in '88...I have always pronounced it "ba-hay-ah." The 4-6 weeks was pretty rough on my lawn. I am in no rush to see my water bill. I had to do a lot of "testing" and spot spraying to keep it green .
What do you think of the water calculation that rachio does? Supposedly factors in slope, soil type .. etc... Could you do an advanced setup/settings video on the rachio?
community: I have a neglected yard. no pre-emergnt was done for crabgrass. It is summer and has taken over. Should I treat it now and have a ton of large bare spots, or wait till winter when its dormant and tackle then?
I think I will leave it this season and deal with it in the fall. It is seriously part of the yard and doesn't look as bad as huge areas of dying grass and then bare spots. It's probably 15-20% of my front yard and pretty much all right by the drive way in one seciton.
Have you done a video about weeds spreading to your yard because of your neighbor? Been pulling weeds about a foot pass my property line so that it won’t spill on my side. I even put fertilizer and I wonder if he notices that it’s green.
I’m up Chicago (yes AL do the accent) and having an inground system is a full time job for me with mechanical issues, especially with half of them being impacts my biggest problems are winter heaving of the heads and just lately with the soil bio program it makes the roots and rhizomes go nuts and hangs the impacts what a nightmare
Very helpful as always. Can you please do a video on mulch? I am trying to see what kind of mulch you use in your yard in the beds. It looks beautiful. Is it Lava Rocks? The cypress mulch doesn't last too long and its a big job that I'd only like to do once and it's done! Thank you
In St. Petersburg where I was born and raised and out in the lawn is where I spend most of my days, mowing and watering and hanging out by the pool catching some rays whilst waiting for the beers to cool. I applied some fert and the wife got scared , and she Allyn you haven’t yet applied the Air8. I pull up a weed and drank another beer and I waved to the neighbor and said hey come over her , we talked about phos and roots and my point was clear that this neighbourhood has no friken idea !!!
The tuna can can show you if you are getting 1/2 inch as far as the sprinkler can throw but how about the areas near the sprinkler. Those areas don't get much water.
Few things: 1: Don’t forget that zones overlap. You’ll need to run both zones to test the overlap area. 2: Amazon sells rain gauges specifically for this. Think I got a 10 pack for $15. 3: It would be fun to see you adjust the sprinklers, change out nozzles, etc to really dial it in.
It just depends on what you’re flow is. I have two zones that are about 1500 sq ft each. They take about 75 minutes for a half inch with 6-8 gallons per minute. Just measure it out and start using that to water and the grass will come back once it warms up. It can take 1.5” plus to keep your grass green when temps are in the 90’s plus everyday.
Assuming you’ve got the flow, you can always switch out the nozzles to up the gallons per minute. Either way, it’s not a race. Just get a half inch down each time. Doesn’t matter if it takes 20 minutes or 2 hours. Just make sure it’s not so fast that it’s running off.
Great Video.....Squeeze in some information sometime on Keeping around your heads clean with that pesky Floratam grass that tends to weave and matt down those heads so they won't pop. That's one of the biggest problems we have down here in Florida especially with the "Snow Birds" that are not familar with this type of grass and how thick it can get.
I know your just giving a estimate on how to check for a 1/2" in your lawn , there are many variables, tune can is about 3" dia and some of the one you buy are smaller so would you get a half inch of water in smaller gauge and depends on where the gauge is in the arc of the spray, seems that the arc of the spray nozzle don't give out the same water across the yard. 23 min seems like a long time to get a half inch of water.
So I get that we want an inch of water, and I get that a tuna can is one inch tall...but doesn’t the diameter of container affect how fast the container will fill up? Meaning that if I place a skinner container in the lawn, it will report one inch filled sooner that a fatter container
Another way i've read about is putting 1 can near the sprinkler head and another far away from that same sprinkler head , then taking the average of the 2 cans, and i guess that would be the actual number. Haven't tried this yet though.
Good stuff Allen! I need to do this for sure, I have irrigation I made for the front yard, Pete Denny kbg test plot style and I do not have a timer on it. I made my first video, just a walk around of the lawn for anyone who wants to check it out! Thank you
@@TheLawnCareNut I'm in the market myself.. no real suggestions, I'm just going to get one that's powerful but not too cumbersome to get in and out of a truck.
I'm also going with gas.. don't want to drag a cord for a weak electric model and I can't find a coal fired steam unit that fits my needs so gas it is.
I've been told that MP ROTARS give the best coverage for WATER CONVERSION, but what is your $0.02 on that? Take care, 🤓 -Thomas West-Western Washington

I swear that beer brought some of the old Chicago out. Cheers. And thanks for the watering vid.
Great tips.
But you can also change nozzles on your heads too as you fine tune each head. I use rainbird and Toro. Nozzle packs are cheap as well as tools to change from say.3.0 gpm to 5.0 gpm or vice versa
..
So you measure each zone independently? Not all the zones together to get an average to account for overlap?
12 zones = 12 beers. should be a fun Saturday
can we do this on a really sunny hot day? or will the water evaporate from the can too much in the heat/sun? trying to wait for overcast but want to get my sprinklers fixed
ALso Citrus County has limited watering to 1 day per week for those of us pumping from the aquifer . SO DO I run 1.5inch at one time
Thanks for the great video, Allyn!

1 hour before sunrise i would say
I eat tuna the same way. Super fast and gagging 😂 hilarious brother.

Do you recommend this watering for Phoenix AZ? BTW I love the beer added in between, not sure if my husband would agree lol
Been trying to get my hands on some Treehouse for 5 years now!
that's what she said
Canned Tuna sales just sky-rocketed!!!
ha ha!
Good stuff Allen! I need to do this for sure, I have irrigation I made for the front yard, Pete Denny kbg test plot style and I do not have a timer on it.
I made my first video, just a walk around of the lawn for anyone who wants to check it out! Thank you
@allyn hayne at 2:05. What are the palms under your elbow? can I grow them in my yard in Philly? how big do they get? Im tryin for a tropical garden
Sago Palms and they won't grow as far north as where you are. Maybe in a pot inside but they need lots of sun.
You are the Big Tuna!
Well time to turn on my irrigation after 5 years of owning my home. What's the worst that can happen? House was in bad shape.
Great video!
P.s. please review the new 60 volt Toro Recycler.
I need to save up for it
Just watched the podcast where you already mentioned this. Sorry for being the guy that brings up an already addressed subject
Didn't know you can get Tree House brewing beer in Florida! (it is brewed near my house). Learning on how to take care of my New England lawn!
I'm so full of tuna and salmon! Time to get out there! BTW he should have said crab and salmon also come in the same size containers.
Nice video! I’m totally trying this! Time to eat tuna!
I go bike riding every weekend checking out the competition in my neighborhood which is not much competitions
it's fun isn't it?
That's what I call dedication to your viewers! I like tuna, but not enough to eat that many cans 😁🤣 informative video good sir.
About time to focus on that curb/sidewalk domination again
Yes I noticed that too. I need a new pressure washer. Any suggestions? I'd think gas powered would be best.
LOL ....Bro that tuna might have gotten the best of you 👍🤣💯
What stone do you use in your Landscape?
Treehouse Green, how fitting of a beer for the LCN!
What do you recomend forma lawn stress temperature 100 Farenheit , el paso Texas

Haha, nice LA Beast reference that guy is insane!

I've been told that MP ROTARS give the best coverage for WATER CONVERSION, but what is your $0.02 on that?
