Smallest Most Powerful Portable Video Light in the World

- The brightest smallest battery powered continuous light in the world, great for outdoors, location shooting, videos, vlogging, wedding photographers and campers is the size of an apple but just as powerful as an Aputure 120Dii with fresnel lens! No big heavy V-mount batteries needed, just a 100w USB-C battery you can get on Amazon. I love these so much, they are awesome for location vlogging. I immediately got 3 of them. It has some fan noise, but that can be easily eliminated with software when editing because it's a steady tone. The name of this little wonder? The Stella Reflex but Light and Motion. It is half the size and price of the current most powerful battery powered small video light- the Light and Motion Stella CLX with fresnel. Also featured in this video are other favorite battery powered video lights I have and recommend (and some I don't recommend). Here are links...

Yahoo? What an error. 😂😂😂
Those new lights are nice looking. Love the battery hack. Always appreciate the comparisons and examples👍👍
Love this guy's videos. He's awesome
I never knew those large lights or flashlights have a fan built in. Interesting 🙃
Nice presentation, but that light is way too loud for any indoor video production.
Well the whole point of the video was small lightweight portable battery powered video lights that can be carried out to a location outdoors. I said in the video if shooting indoors, you can use any big heavy clinky light plugged into an outlet ruclips.net/video/k3jlWb87i54/видео.html
How do I know if I won the give away ? 😂
his poor eyes, haha
Now this is a man who truly loves camera gear.
I never thought someone would be obsessed with light I love the content and honesty ❤❤❤
All his videos feel like a parody
I've see photographers use the Stella Reflex with the battery grip and wondered if it was more of a gimic light. But now with Markus's demo hack, using a 100w USB-C battery makes this really the best high output light that's super portable. I have the Canon R5 and I have often been tasked to shot video along with my photography. I never planned on being a hybrid shooter but the needs of my clients have moved me in that direction. The Stella Reflex will replace my GMV light panels that are just too weak for sunny days. Thanks Markus!
This is the kind of video equipment reviews we need. Aputure is nice but to have a smaller light that’s just as powerful is great for smaller rooms
This man is ridiculous in a good way. Thanks for providing a lot of useful information. Also gives me some 90s nostalgia haha
The 200 USD Wellmaking HL-800 costs in Europe 900USD so not a great deal
Dude!! I literally just bought the Aperture Amaran 60d and used it for a daytime outdoor snowshoe commercial shoot!! It was literally for 1 or 2 scenes but It was the lightest and most portable light and it works SOOOO GOOOODDDDD!!! I am so glad I purchased that light, it goes with me everywhere I know I’ll need light. I just need to pick up the aperture fresnel and the original dish and I think I’m going to get a second 60D to be 100% honest. I love it
I mean 18 minutes of video "review" and not even a mention of light quality, CRI, CRA, color temp, or flickering.. I mean, the size is important, but NOT the most important factor.
Markus aims to provide general information for the wider public, without overloading with nerd-specs. He's a practical guy, even if he probably knows all the tech details, but wants to keep the fun and enjoyment in photography.
Great video! I appreciate all the examples you included and showing us the light in action in so many different scenarios. Really useful! I'm not really in the market for a light right now but if I were I'd definitely be looking at that one.
I tried the StellaPro Reflex S when it was almost double the current price. Never could get it to work in flash mode and it was a bit too pricey to use as a continuous light source, so I returned it. It was marketed at the time as having a flash mode capable of firing up to 20 fps, which I wanted to use for dance photography.
it does flash up to 20x per burst, but its nowhere near as bright as a real flash. But its great as a constant light
What a well done review! Very complete and thoughtfully considered. It was great to see the range of lights sizes and power.
I would compare the Stella Reflex Pro S to a Aputure LS 60d. The flash is decent but not as bright as a strobe. I use a couple of these for weddings. If you want it softer you gotta use an umbrella. Currently working on a 3d printed mount to accommodate magmod accessories.
The LS60D is not a small portable battery powered light
@@MarkusPix agree I meant to say in terms of light output
Well yeah there are all kinds of normal lights that put out the same or much more light, but they have to be plugged into the wall and are not small and portable.
How's the 3d printing going? @paps ny
so funny! these direct lights without any diffusion looks really not nice at all.. "i can't even open my eyes.." so you can't use it this way...
I was being dramatic- I have used direct lights like these without any diffusion directly in my face for YEARS and people say they liked the look ruclips.net/video/k3jlWb87i54/видео.html
and ruclips.net/video/YUs8184f1OY/видео.html
and ruclips.net/video/htkueY6xIK0/видео.html
and I also said it has a softbox adapter so you can soften the light if you want. ruclips.net/video/k3jlWb87i54/видео.html
Loojs expensive, u know my financial situation is mostly sad , i gaurentee i can't afford eveb the the cheapest of these gems. This is why I love MARKUSPIX BECAUASE HE SHOWS ALL LEVELS OF WEALTH IN TERMS OF CAMERA EQUIPMENT. Lights are somthing im totally lacking and u can tell in my content. These lights will go on my wishlist god bless
Update: The Amaran 60D DOES take V-mount batteries with a D-tap cable. Aputure told me it doesn't but it does. (that's not the featured light in this video though)
Unless it has changed, their solution is a DTAP cable. For whatever reason they decided to sell it separately. Yet, it's not very optimal solution because a big enough battery adds slightly too much weight to one side. Why didn't they put the mount on the rear? Also guess what, it also acts like a reverse pendulum with a big battery attached :)
I'd still say it's my favourite of all the lights I own.
What I find the most impressive about these lights is that even Sharkcookie went out of his way of almost never talking about the gear he uses to really praise the lights, and now Markus is telling some really warm words. I have checked and it seems like this might be a bit of a hassle to find the correct version in Europe.
That is an incredible little light! I will add one of these to my Christmas wishlist. The nice thing about them being so small is I could tuck them up into my ceiling, so they are out of the way and providing a nice second angle of lighting.
B&H is selling them for $389 this week holiday special instead of $650

That was so much useful information. The Chinese are just killing it these days with all the affordable choices. I’m using one Rotolight Aeos and two Neos LED light (mark I and mark II) without utilizing the lame flash option. They have since doubled the light output from previous models. I love the Neo because I can pack two of them in my Billingham camera bags front pockets. I use the somewhat portable Dynalite Baja studio strobes. Otherwise.
Uhmmm Stella Reflex isnt Chinese. They are based in California

I was talking to Tim Ganny last night and he was telling me duke stop. He was telling me about how his father purchased a flashlight in 1979 at kay mart that he he used for a video light exclamation mark. He duck tape it to a a microphone stand duke duke please put that down. It was a rather unconventional approach but worked well with his v h s camera. Hey hang on there is someone at the door I'll be right back.
Excellent information. Thank you!
The amaran 60D does take vmount batteries but I think it's the 14 volt ones and you need to buy the Dtap cable seperately.
Public service announcement the reflex studio is on sale for $454.30 on the light and motion website (March 13, 2023)
Very informative buuuuut These price points are not for your beginner vlogger. My camera didn't cost a grand...
Just a heads up the 60d does take v mount batteries you just have to use a vmount battery with a d-tap and plug it in to the power port on the back
It can't use V-mount, I called the company, different voltage.
@@MarkusPix weird its worked for me using the "Core SWX Hypercore NEO 9 Mini 98Wh Lithium-Ion Battery (V-Mount)" I've used it on a couple shoots.... Maybe its just not recommended? 😬
@@MarkusPix ruclips.net/user/shortsjQZf954bJjU?feature=share (maybe it’s bad for the unit?)
The V-mount battery I’m using (HyperCore NEO9 mini) says Max load: 12A @ 14V
And the Amaran60D port says “DC IN 12-19V” so figured it was okay. I’m not trying to be right or wrong just seeking clarification. Because I know it works just don’t know if it’s safe or not.
When I got the light I immediately assumed it didn't have the NP battery plate permantly attached because people could choose between vmount and NP. So I called both B&H and Aputure and said "where's the Vmount adapter?" B&H said there isn't one and Aputure said it's not made for Vmounts, only NP. Maybe the person I spoke to didnt know what the engineers intended or designed, I don't know. But personally, I'd say if it works, use it. Heck the whole thing only costs 170 bucks.
honest question-how does one use a light like this on a human outdoors to overpower the sun when it's presumably blinding the model/talking head/talent, etc? I'd think that would make for some squint-y footage.:)
the fresnel spotlight effect may not be too objectionable, but You don't seem to be concerned about the quality of the light. For on site info videos like this, maybe not so bad, but I'm not ready to give up decades of soft lighting for size or the ability to previsualize. None of these lights provide enough lumens to use modifiers and compete with the quality of a flash, I'm sorry to say.
Thanks for sharing.
What did you expect its just a PCB board with a LED on it , its tin as a cardboard box , literally 3-4mm thin , the rest of it is cooling fan and battery if there is one .
Hi Marcus, what is the mount you used for the Stella Pro light?
Have you seen the Backscatter 4300?
Im thinking of getting one
Now that the electricity is super high expensive i guess led lights strobes for video is maby the one to go and they dond even have a fan? What can you recommend from low budget to more expensive one?
YOU, sir, are the brightest light on RUclips!
LOL - keep it up.
This guys is the best and more acurrated
The amaran 60 does take vmount, just need a DTab adapter cable, that’s how use it
Brightness does not matter when battery last 5minutes or it doesn't keep color..
I just wonder, despite all the fancy expensive gadgets he owns did he actually make any real video besides these review?

Plz what is the best light for makeup artist videos???
What a video to prove these are not the lights you should have, especially the way you use them. "I can't even open my eyes." Nobody wants to see you in videos with your eyes closed. You can buy almost 4 Amaran 60d's for the price of one of these. Then again, if you have $700 to throw away on a flashlight that you cannot use then I guess money means nothing to you. You can use V-mount batteries with the 60d when you get a d-tap to adapt them (you did not mention that's how you used them in your pinned comment). The fan noise is a concern with narrative film, so not good for that either. You did a nice review and comparison, but I believe you only proved the point opposite the one you were attempting to make.
I was having fun and being dramatic. Of course I can can use them, I'm using them here ruclips.net/video/k3jlWb87i54/видео.html Do you hear fan noise? I've been using lights with fan noise for narratives for years, but you never heard it because like I said, it's so easy to filter out. Do I look like I'm being blinded here? ruclips.net/video/YUs8184f1OY/видео.html They are just as bright at a 120D II which I'm using here ruclips.net/video/k3jlWb87i54/видео.html and I'm having no problem. I did not prove the opposite as you say, the purpose was to take something lightweight and small out to a remote location thats just as powerful as a 120D II which is exactly what I did and it works wonderfully. Of course a v mount battery needs a D-tap cable. I guess I need to remember there are some overly serious people out there.
I enjoyed this review of the smallest light and like yourself Mr. Markus, I look forward to see where they go with the technology and the size of these outfits.
youre a crack Markus, thanks for share your knowledge as always
Markus, please demonstrate how you get rid of the noise.
@4:30 when you say adds 1-Stop of light and show the EV meter from 5.6 to 8, I am confused. EV 5.6 to 8 is actually 2.4 Stops of light.
EV meters often display in F-Stops and EV. I assume this is a simple mistake -- just wondering which one you meant :)
The Stella reflex is $1000 on Amazon
Loved the comparisons, explanations and visual examples
"brightness" is output power + beam angle + distance, what's being compared here is "how bright can it expose my face"... not quite the same things as the power of the light, but for the very specific application Markus discusses here I guess we can let it slide.
Whew
Thank you!
At around 2:45, you are comparing the Aputure 120d II's brightness to the Amaran 60d's brightness. I thought that when referencing EV (exposure value) that each unit was one stop. Therefore if the 120d II is reading 16 EV and the 60d is reading 11 EV, then the 120d is 5 stops brighter. I realize that the numbers 11 and 16 are also coincidentally common f-stops.
1 stop is double the amount of light and its definitely not 5 stops difference 😄
Always nice to see some unbiased review, thank you!
Dude? Seriously? That’s big and chunky? Go find a 5K HMI Joker and tell me your aperture 120 is big. On second thoughts, go find a 10k tungsten fresnel and tell me your120 is bulky.
Dude. Seriously? Who takes a 120D with fresnell and V-mount batteries in a suitcase on vacation with them, or hiking in a backpack to a remote location? And it also requires a sturdier, much heavier light stand. And what vloggers use 5K HMI when walking in the park? Dude. Seriously?
Would you ever consider carrying only one light like that Stellar, or is 2 your minimum for most work?
For an older person like me, two lights helps smooth my face more, so for me it's 2 lights. People in their twenties are welcome to do the moody dramatic look.
Hey Markus, great video. I hope you don't mind me asking, but I am curious to know how long the Stella lasts using the battery pack?
Where these kind of people are made? hahahaah hepic.....
Do you need security personnel for storage safety?
This channel is awesome, im trying to save up money to get my first camera. I have been watching 10 or 15 of the most popular photography channels and this is by far the best 1! I hope to get my first camera by the end of next year so I can start taking pictures and video.
Welcome aboard! My channel likes to feature smaller, simpler less expensive stuff than the others. They're more fun and less show-offy 😋 I like to show what amazing things can be done with things that other people laugh at.
@@MarkusPix Awesome thank you I appreciate your help and your channel. Every time I seem to get even a hundred dollars saved up something seems to happen. Thanks for the video, but this thing is not for serious filmmaking. Plus, the light is very spot-like, it doesn't look good on the face. if you can see the lighting in your image....its not good lighting. Just my 2 cents as a DoP..
Hahahahahaha This is for VLOGGERS who want to hike to a remote location and light up their face during bright sunny day but want the smallest, lightest thing possible. This is called being resourceful. I guess you missed the part where I said this ruclips.net/video/k3jlWb87i54/видео.html
And I guess you also missed the part where I said it comes with a WIDE lens which makes the light throw a standard wide beam. I got a SPOT beam which focuses the light only on the face so you can get more light output. That's just me. But the normal way it comes is not a spot. By the way, in Hollywood, it's "DP" not DoP and I've worked with some of the biggest DPs in the industry, like the DP from James Bond's Moonraker, and pro DPs are ALWAYS creatively using small powerful lights in tight spaces . There is a time and place for everything. There is not one constant situation, especially when on location. ruclips.net/video/w4q0_uSIOJw/видео.html
Not that I would recommend this but the fan is quite visible and I'm wondering if someone has considered replacing that fan with a Noctua computer fan.
I'm sure it's possible.

What’s the battery life like and can they operate outdoors in Phoenix.
I live in Vegas so 🤪 it's just as hot. Battery life depends on what size battery bank you use. Honestly though, these things are pretty loud, they're coming out with something quieter and cheaper soon. In the meantime, there's zhiyun molus x100

Thank you so much!
Hey Markus have you seen the new Inkee light ? you might like that one :)
Its only 60 watts, bigger and heavier than the 80w Wellmaking.
I saw this Stella Reflex on RUclips a few weeks back. Unfortunately no one in Australia sells it.
How does it compare to the godox ml30bi and lc30bi?
Most of these are at least three times as bright
I like the Stella because I can use it for a video light; it is light enough for the DJI RS2. I'm about to find out. 100W USB-C power coming from 100W dtap adapter. I get that this setup is asking for red eyes but will be physique videos. For talking head videos how do I best mitigate red eyes? I have ring light I use but it is too weak beyond 6 feet; the stella may fill the longer ranges.
100 Watt USB-Cable? With 5 Volt that's 20 Ampere. The cable and the fiddling USB-jack must get hotter than the lamp.....
2 lights - twice as bright? i don t think so, maybe on some other phisiscs leson not here
You are correct
where is your microphone? the spund is so even yet you turn round and round …. hmmm
