  • Episode 3 of 3 - Re-surfacing Wetlander Slick Bottom Coating on a jon boat hull.
    The last video in this series. We are finally painting on the Wetlander.
    We cleaned the boat with soap and water, chipped up any loose paint, roughed up the surface with a sander, wiped it down with a damp rag, let it dry, taped off where we wanted our edges, and admired the beautiful prep work we did.
    Part A and Part B have been shakin' and tossed around. [Quick tip = stir the inside of the containers and then shake them a few more times]
    I was able to fit part B into the container with part A so I did not need any additional containers for mixing... You will, however, need these supplies;
    Paint Roller with Head - amzn.to/3cVrJwe - the 4" is a perfect size
    Extra foam rollers/heads - amzn.to/3e4WbnF - extra absorbent so you don't need to keep revisiting your paint tray.
    Paint Tray - amzn.to/2ZobbZB
    Liner for Tray - amzn.to/3cTedJo
    Completely mix up the two parts and make them one. I did a combination of shaking (even though I don't recommend it because the bubbles can stay in it when it gets thick) and stirring it with a stick which is mainly how I did it.
    I split the work into halves. I do one side of the boat lengthwise, and then I go to the other side and do that whole side. Ones I finish the second side, the first side is normally dry and ready for the next coat.
    Work from the center of the boat to the outside so that way you are not leaning over wet paint. Do not pour the contents onto the boat because it normally tachs up too quickly before I can spread it evenly.
    After making this video, I would solely recommend only mixing half of each content, applying those coats, then mixing together the second half and applying it. The last coat was very thick and made the coat look messy. It easily showed runs and roller marks because it was already curing and setting up since the pot was over an hour old.

      Love it. Yes you do. I'll be getting the Backwater kit on the boat and this boat, wetlander, engine, and kit will be put to the test. Thank you for the continual support SluSharkND

      Thank you C Price! It got a little thick on me but I was able to get it on there. Took a little longer to cure compared to last time too. Now to start on the Backwater kit 🤙

    Did you use the entire half gallon? How big is your boat.

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  4 года назад

      I used the whole kit. I got a solid 4 coats and a thinner 5th coat. I have a 1436 and went half-ish way up the sides but none on the transom.

    Have question for you bud. Just got some of this but haven’t put it on yet. I purchased the half gallon prime and top coat kit, says it is good for 100sf. Putting it on a 1652 Jonny. You where able to get 5 coats with one gallon of that top coat? Also any suggestions besides “prep is everything”? Good vids. Wish you would have done a before and after speed test hindsight right?! Keep it up. Look forward to more.

      Hey Adam, I had the half gallon kits too. The first time I applied the Wetlander I had the 2-Layer Kit - Half Gallon (primer + topcoat) and then this time I just had the half gallon of topcoat. I got 5 layers/coats with the half gallon kit; so 5 layers with the primer, and then 5 layers with the topcoat. Suggestions: If you are doing it yourself, mix half of it at a time and apply it, work from the center of the boat to you, a roller worked well for me, I didn't have much luck pouring it on the boat and rolling it out because it was curing on me really quick, and prep is everything it really is haha I'm glad you got that. Speed wise, there was no difference. I got 18 mph before and I get 18 mph after. No noticeable difference in speed. Good luck with your project!!

      Right on! Thanks for the response. Thought you said it was a gallon on the video. I was thinking I wouldn’t have enough to get it done. Stuff is pretty expensive but looks to be a tuff product that will last. Think it was funny some of the testimony’s on the web site, guys are getting 5mph faster after they apply the product.

      Hey no problem, I apologize for the late response on this one, I don't get notifications from RUclips when I get replies, only when there is a new comment. It is expensive but it works very good when it comes to vegetation and needing to slide and it has lasted pretty good. Some people on Facebook said they gain speed too, but I didn't experience any noticeable speed increase. Maybe 5mph faster over grass I would believe that hahaha

    What do you think about adding float Pods to aluminum boats with swamp runners?

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  4 года назад

      I believe that if you need to add pods, you are expecting too much from the boat. In most cases, pods are just a band-aid for a bigger issue of needing a bigger boat. The hull is not designed to carry the load you are applying to it. If anything, I would add a hundeck so that way you can continue the flat, leading edge of the transom. When you add pods, you break up that flat edge of the transom and create more surface area and angles for the water to grab and slow you down, so if anything add one big pod (huntdeck). Another issue you run into is that you are now pushing the wake further behind the boat where the longtail may no longer reach it so you will need to also move your engine further back or get a longer tail.

    What color did you go with?

      I went with Olive Drab. It actually matches the manufactures color quite well.
