    Given how George treats prophecy, I doubt Lightbringer is a literal sword. It’s too Aragorn, to have the forgotten heir wield a re-forged magic sword. For that matter, who is Azor Ahai will likely have multiple correct answers.
    Myths are typically meant to grant personification to abstract concepts or explain phenomenon. An anthropology-link maester would tell you the real meaning of the Azor Ahai myth is the cost of necessary sacrifices. The hero slowly realized that to save the world he needed to give up what mattered personally to him most.

    One other advantage of the lighter weapon is endurance. Writing this at the gym but trust me a different in weight of just 1 pound held at sword length is huge for stamina and energy drain.
    At the level of Barristan and Arthur if the fight is not over in seconds it will be a loooooong one. The fact that with Dawn Arthur will tire out more slowly will be a huge edge.
    I have sparred guys way better than me and one just because I was much fresher than them. The gas tank is a huge factor.

      I'd have to share your experience, though back in my MMA days I was the one doing the gassing out to opponents that didn't have my grappling or striking skills but would just kite me round until I was knackered 😂
      Never had it happen when I did HEMA and Kenjustu just because real sword fights at competition level are generally over quick in two or three moves, but in armour it would be a different story and endurance would absolutely be a factor!

      @@williamhermann6635 5lbs is the weight of probably a smaller greatsword. So let's say Dawn could about 4lbs in weight, maybe 5lbs. But he will have a significant reach advantage over the normal arming sword.
      But to clarify my thoughts above, the weight benefit of Dawn will mean he is far less tired than he would be using a normal greatsword. That will mean he can go longer and harder than he otherwise would be able to, which is going to give him a significant edge in the fight. It is in effect removing one of the major disadvantages of using a great sword, or at least noticeably diminishing it.

      I think that's said for swords as a whole Jeremy. We see them as this awesome honourable weapon. In reality they were nothing but a backup weapon (basically the equivalent of a pistol) if you drew your sword you were generally in a pretty bad situation, definitely not tearing up the battlefield.
      In civilian life they were also less a weapon of honor and more of a status symbol. An axe, bow and spear were all considered tools (spear and bow for hunting, axe for woodfelling) as well as weapons, but a sword is designed solely to kill people, so if you had a sword it was like saying "look how important i am I have the right to kill people" 🤣

We also head Barristan reflect on this time period a good amount and it’s one of the most impactful time periods in the story. Even if they didn't say anything else about it, it would have been a cool easter egg for those who read the books. It actually would have been a good weapon to use in the fight against Ned and the others. Two-handers were usually battlefield weapons, which would be good to have when trying to keep your distance from multiple opponents. The struggle to get into range would have also been a good excuse to throw honor out the window and stab him in the back.

    counterpoint: the reason there's no 'fixed' point of balance for a sword, is that everyone has a different preference. Aligned with one's strength, fighing style, etc...
    Barristan might have had his sword replaced a couple of times - but he's rich & important enough to have a sword made according to his specific specs. Arming sword or longsword, Grip length, pommel, crossguard shape, point of balance, total weight, length ... Barristan would have a sword perfect for him.
    Dawn on the other hand ... might be the penultimate sword, chances are very low it just happen to be the perfect sword for Arthur. Simple example, Imagine Arthur prefers cutting, but Dawns point of balance is more thurst-centric. Or Athur likes 'zucken' (a HEMA technique,re after a blocked slash, you pull back the sword, and stab your opponent) but Dawn is too long for that.
    Obviously it might also be the other way around (Dawn in fact being a very good sword for Arthur's prefered style) - but the in the wrong hands, even Dawn would be sub-par compared to a custom sword.

    The misconception that Valyrian steel and Dawn can cut through swords and plate armor comes from the Histories and Lore short on Valyrian steel where it's said that it can cut through plate armor like cloth.
    Still, this is clearly an exagerration as in the books this has never been shown.

    • @TheFandomeClips
      @TheFandomeClips  Месяц назад +1

      I think that statement is definitely hyperbole , ethier they can do this and everyone whose ever owned a Valerian steel sword has never duelled past the first swing, or they can't and people are attributing the odd fluke (that probably would have happened with a regular sword) as a consistent property.
      Thanks for watching as always Scaw! Liam

    9:57 Anything regular steel can do, Valyian steel does it better. Its not just stronger that other materials, its perfectly strong. It doesn't even dull when stuck against another VS blade, its otherworldly. Swords made of regular materials suffer damage during use against each other. What do you think would happen when a normal steel sword comes up against something that effectively infinitely hard/tough with 0 brittleness, ductility or malleability. Whether or not a human has the strength to make full use of these properties is another question entirely.

    • @TheFandomeClips
      @TheFandomeClips  Месяц назад

      Yeah thats kind of the point of the video, harder, lighter and sharper but not a lightsaber. Vsteel doing something better doesn't diminish that a regular sword is also capable of the same feats that people think are unique to Vsteel and Dawn. Your point about strength is extremely valid though! In theory Vsteel and Dawn could slice into plate but noone with MAAAAAYBBBE the exception of Gregor Clegaine wielding ice and giving it everything he had would have the physical strength to actually do it. @TheFandomeClips  Месяц назад +2

      We did not confuse the two, Jaime, Dayne and Barristan are considered the 3 best swordsman of their era, by the fans and GRRM himself. Jaime is even speculated to be the best of all time depending on what mood GRRM is in 😂 Daemon and Ameon are probably up there with them but I'd wager they are all comparable. Contrary to what people think, skill has a ceiling and the best of one era is likely to be comparable with the best of another.

    Okay, i feel i got dunk on a lot after this comment on valyrian steel / Dawn cutting trough armour XD I didn't mean to imply about lightsabers properties, i genuinely thought they could do that.
    To my defense, i only thought that because of this video : ruclips.net/video/hde8ml4wZ-M/видео.html
    You have Jorah's VA (a character that owned a valiryan steel sword) talking about it and honestly it can be misleading. I do understand your point tho, and i agree with it though i would still be inclined to think those swords would have an easier time passing trough such defenses. Again, you can argue a good sword can also do it, and VS / Dawn just make it a more easier with their "unbreakable / always sharp" factor...

    • @TheFandomeClips
      @TheFandomeClips  Месяц назад +1

      Haha don't worry matey, it wasn't our intention to dunk on anyone :) one of our channel policies is never to jump on people who write civil comments that add to the conversation. The video idea came about because Thom wanted to know what made Dawn so special and what it could actually do and I ended up trawling through forums and source materials and I found loads of people making the same claim but with nothing but those quotes and feats to base it on. If I did have to take a sword against armor I would take Dawn or Vsteel over a regular sword, if only for the fact I can swing away with chipping or dulling the blade! Thanks for watching! Liam

    Only that you do not need spells or dragonfire to melt set Valyrian steel.
    Lannisters did it, remember. In the book, not in that make belief TV show.
    Oh.
    Also.
    Where is it stated that obsidian is used to make Valyrian steel?
    IMO Valyrian steel is forged with Dragonfire. Hence magical and deadly against creatures of ice.

    • @TheFandomeClips
      @TheFandomeClips  Месяц назад +1

      Erm...........you do need spells to work with Valerian steel in the books? Tywin hires a master blacksmith who knows the spells, not just any old blacksmith. GRRM has even said himself that magic is involved in the forging and reworking of Valerian Steel 😂
      Noone stated Obsidian is definitely involved in the video, it is just highly suspected to be by most fans because the blades take on a darkened color in comparison to normal steel and despite his best efforts in the book, the black Smith Tobho Mott who can rework the metal couldn't get it to take on any other colour (He tried to tint the blades red for house Lannister) Obsidian is also associated heavily with magic in ASOIAF and since we know for a fact it kills WWs it just makes logical sense for a lot of fans that Obsidian is likely to be involved in the process.
      Your theory is as good as anyone else because right now noone has a solid answer on Vsteel or Dawn 😂

    • @jakemaattanen
      @jakemaattanen Месяц назад

      @@TheFandomeClips , fair.
      Yes, now that you mention Tywin did mention few or three(?) who could still work Valerian steel.
      But I am sure that video said Dragonfire to melt once it is set?
      [edit.] I stand corrected. Got it wrong.
      Also, obsidian part was on the ” speculative ” part but was heavily implied.
      But yes, english is my 3rd language so I can always fall back on to that 😀.
      [edit.] Not going to check. I believe you ✌️
      I love these speculations. It infuriates me that we are kept guessing.
      Just finnish the books GRRM or let somebody else to do it for you!
      Then have somebody to collect an appendix of FAQ and give real answers to them 👍

       @jakemaattanen aha , well thanks for engaging with us Jake! Hope you enjoyed it.
      I had to go read up how the blacksmith in Kings Landing had reworked the metal when it was stated dragon fire wouldn't melt them.
      Basically as Liam said - Tobho Mott is the only person within Kings Landing of REFORGING Valyrian steel, that's because he learned his trade in Qohor, where they can REFORGE Valyrian Steel but the secret of CREATING Valyrian Steel was lost in the Doom of Valyria.
      The reforging requires some "spells" but they're very ambiguous what that means ( is it magic? or just a technological secret, it seems like its most likely the former potentially), that is what possibly protects it against Dragon Fire and Fire in general because Blackfyre was burned on a funeral Prior with Aegon 1st and it was the only thing that remained. ( Assuming Balerion was what started the funeral Pyre, like we see in House of the Dragon with Aemma)
      Qohor is also known as the City of Sorcerers, so helps lend credit to it being magic spells used to manipulate the metal to be reforged. I think one guy believes blood magic is involved. Otherwise it seems only a few Qohor blacksmiths know how to reforge the steel and Tywin was just super lucky that one of them was in Kings Landing at the time to help reforge Ice.

      Don't think we said anything of the sort in the video Jack my friend. We looked at what's known about the sword as fact, what you can feasibly speculate about the capabilities of the sword and what's definitely made up fan nonsense. We covered the case for its potentially been the first lightbringer and said the swords mystery is intriguing, but we have nothing major to go on yet as to the part it will play in the story. Alot of the fantastical things you hear about Dawn is mostly fan made myths that have been perpetuated by other fans.
      Not at any point do we down play the fact that Dawn is special and one of a kind or say that house Dayne is irrelevant. We simply made our case on the information thats available, which is from the books and official sources too I might add, seeing as how the sword is never addressed in the show apart from its brief cameo at TOJ.
      Dawn and house Dayne has got a big part to play im sure, but the point of this video is that as of its release, there is no solid answer as to what that part is.
      Thanks for watching! Liam
