Been a while since I saw the stats but 24 percent of players voted Datsyuk hardest player to stop. Crosby was tied for 2nd at 12 percent. When Datsyuk was healthy (strong enough knee to stand the pressure he put on it) he was the better player. His victims said so.
Imo Crosby played in much harder league and is the most well rounded hockey player ever. He has the speed, can play as a playmaker, sniper, power forward, grinder, and is one of the best 2 way forwards in the game. His skill set is unmatched and that's why I consider him the GOAT.

I have to agree for this era. Gretz played in a different era. The talent and conditioning of the players on all teams is much much better today. Many of the players on teams of the 80's and 90's would not make todays NHL rosters. Their idea of conditioning and getting into shape was to cut out eating cheeseburgers , fries and drinking a cold one in August. Today all year around special diets and super conditioning is all year around. 99 -66-68 and others would be super players and 66 because of his size more so would cope with the size and speed of todays players but I dout their numbers would be anything like they were. I did enjoy the 80's and 90's but I have to admit the new era is a much better all around talent era.
Let's not forget equipment. Back in 77 when even I went from Bauers with steel blade to Lange Lazer 5s with Perfecta blades, it made a big difference in turning and weight. Same with light weight padding, breathable jerseys etc. and the sticks now are magic as compared to the lumber pile from years ago. On a side note, an ex NHLer from the late 50s to early 60 that I knew told me their idea of fitness was going to a bar after a game ha ha.

The Goaltending, the whole game now a days is far more superior then when gretzky played, there's no way Gretzky would even come close to those numbers now a days.

A lot of people put Gretzky as the best because of his ppg, that was YEARS ago when there was way more goals. Crosby is the best ever because he dominated a generation more than anyone else did. Gretzky was handed a team with 7 other Hall of Famers and won 4 cups. Crosby carried a team to win 3.

I think lemeiux is the best, hell gretzky retired in 98 playing against guys who would mold the sport into what it is today, but thats why i pick lemieux. He had a 90 point season after he retired and all the bullshit he went through he could still produce top numbers in a changing game.
If you don't think Crosby is better than Gretzky you need to evaluate some clips instead of look at the point total. The caliber of hockey in the NHL right now is 10x better than it was in Gretzky era.

Gretzky hunted for the puck but he was also always in the neutral zone waiting for a breakout pass, Crosby is more reliable defensively.
