Currently I'm only growing shiitake on logs outdoors but I'm learning from your videos how to grow them and others indoors. My wife was having NONE of that as she thinks it's going to be messy or smelly. I pointed out that we allow her brothers in our house and they are both messy and smelly but she says that's different as they are family......I guess I like mushrooms better than her family. Pressure cooking them does seem appealing. After making her watch your videos with me I finally got the green light! I think her hearing the word "sterile" and "sterilized" over and over really helped. Thanks brother!
jaja!!
u make it all look so simple! thanks for the videos! theyre so clean and professional even the music fits
Thanks for the kind words! I am glad you enjoy the vids, I plan to make many more very soon.
as always top-notch videos, one thing, when you mix grain spawn with sawdust, try not to clog the only air-filter you got. thanks
can talk about light, humidity temperature, these things i'm unsure of during these 3 processes. thanks.
Great video's thanks. and subscribed, I have a recommendation on a video
HOW TO STORE SPAWN, GROW BAGS, AND FRUITING BAGS.
it sounds like you use a shelf, but maybe talk and 'show' if possible an ideal setup, and your setup to give us a good idea.
thanks and keep the tutorials coming, from a soon to be hobby mushroom farmer
Great info!
I love your videos. Thank you for all the great info with great delivery.
For anyone thinking of using the squeeze bottles, A spray bottle is much easier to use than those squeeze bottles. And easier/cheaper to buy.
It may be easier to mix the spawn in if the bag were more inflated and impulse sealed. Great channel by the way. Very helpful.
Hi Tony, thank you for the wonderful video but please, I need to know how to prepare the substrate from scratch. I am interested in Mushroom Farming. Help me out. Thank you.
I do the mushroom spawn innoculation after I washed myself (hair and body) completely, I wear a surgical mask while handling the spawns.
Nice
Tony is such a daddy
Question...brand new to this. I bought 4, 6lb sterile blocks of substrate and have a 4lb bag of OM grain spawn. I do have gloves and a alcohol spray bottle. I have no air filter system...the most I could do it turn on my over the stove hood vent. Is this safe and what are potential dangers of contamination? How would I know if there was a problem with contaminants? Thanks from BC. Your videos are fantastic!
what happens if you simply inject a solution of spores into a fruiting bag with a syringe?
Substrate and grain spawn ASMR
Hi Tony. thanks for all the video help! Question here, does the fruiting block have to be in a dark environment while the mycelium colonizes it?
I take it that a rubber band would also work for keeping the bag closed.
those may not withstand the boiling
so a still air box will still not work well enough
A glove box is easy to build and helps keep inoculation process sterile.
I agree! You could also use a Still Air Box or SAB.
would "Canawick Long Burning Hardwood Pellets" work? composition says hardwood """"and softwood"""" even though the bag says "Hardwood Pellets"
Thanks for these informative excellent videos.
How do you sterilize the saw dust substrate? How to maintain the moisture? Does this requires pinholes
I was thinking about using a powerful 30w UVC lightbulb inside a sealed glove box, and then i would have a totally sterile glove box.
Good idea?
I'm assuming that the laminar hoods are positive air flow instead of a negative air flow.
If you mean it's blowing over the work surface, you would be correct. You want clean, laminar flow (not turbulent) flowing across your work to prevent decontamination
Hi , great video as always , i would like to know more about incubation room , what temp and rH you maintain in incubation room for gray oyster mushroom ? Also does it need to be pitch black and i never seen humidifier in incubation , why is dat ?
Thank you once again for uploading such informative videos , appreciated :)
Hi, i have a question. Why are you working so sterile when inoculation in this block, and at the video with the straw you just take it out with your hands and put it in the straw. Thank you. Regard Mark
Hey Tony,
Love all your videos.
Is the sawdust and bran fruiting body in a bag, mixed with inoculated grain suitable for Lions Mane mushrooms?
Been watching a lot of your videos but haven't any specific to Lions Mane being a popular mushroom at the moment.
Cheers!
Tom
Hey great video. If I use just sawdust not pellets do I still need to wet the sawdust?
I bought a kit to take back to BOLIVIA, a country as you may know that is full of mesothermic valleys with the whole range of temperatures to grow bio.....I live at 1000 feet altitude, subtropical as you can get, and wonder if my shitake mycelium will grow and fruit, the temp range here goes from 60.8 to 91.4 F and hotter in the really hot days...will you as a mushroom shaman predict my luck? thanks
Hi. I'm Hajar from Malaysia. How you grow oyster mushrooms with effective microorganisms?
What do you think on using a ultraviolet lamp inside your air filter box ?
Thank you for your videos
Sir my bags are doing fine but now there is water building up in the sides and a little under the top of the sub, myc piss is following what do I do , as they are not fully consolidated?
Hi Tony, first off - I love your videos, we can see you put a lot of passion into this. Now one question: Why do I need to sterilize supplemented sawdust substrate in the PC, for straw it's enough to pour hot water over it? I'm asking because I have the sawdust and the spawn ready, but I don't have grow bags and I wonder if I can skip the step of sterilization. Thank you.
I'm not Tony but.... I already try growing mushroom before. For me I just use straw. Just boiling it with hot water is enough (*but adding supplement nutrition like coffee ground, soy hulls will need the substrate to be sterilize*)
Hey Tony! Where can I find the filter slips you use for the grow bags?
could it be the stuff u use when wateproofing ur roof along with the plastic mix to make a patch?we call it a blanket and is the lightest material, its made of polypropylene ......
Do you need to put the inoc'd bags in the dark or does it need light?
Hey Tony, what size is that hepa filter? Is that a 1.5x1.5 or 2x2ft? Thanks!
In regards to filter slips you use... would a "fryer oil" filter work? if not could you please provide a link to the appropriate product?
Thank you for all of your informational videos and products. My shiitake spawn is off to a great start!
Hey Josh! Those would probably work. Honestly, you don't really need them. As long as the pressure cooker cools down before you handle the bags it should be totally fine. These filters in this video were cut out of a Tyvek painters suit that you can get at home depot ect.
do you ever do LC to sawdust blocks?
Anyone knows whether oysters grow on manure, or work castings?
Bruce Parker you buy paul steamets book and then just supplement with RUclips videos and you’ll have expert level knowledge
I am a bit confused. On the other videos you grow it outside on a non pasturate straw and on the other video on simply pasturate straw. What is the main difference here that the flow hood is required?
basically the richer your sub the more cleaner it need to be, adding wheat bran makes your mix very rich thats why you need to sterilise and not just pasteurise like a pure straw mix
Do you have another link for the video on making the sawdust block?
great teacher! what tree is this sawdust. will it work with pine sawdust?
You need hardwood sawdust
hey if im innoculating hardwood substarte in an outside greenhouse with a sterile box should i have the room positive pressure or negative ? also brother should i have more air flow coming in from window or limit fresh air exposure as much as possible or am i going about it wrong way and fresh air will have more contams than still air in room please help man its doin me head in !
How much spawn do you actually use
Does anyone know about how many lb does each block produce of mushrooms?
Hi Tony. Can you recommend a brand of wood pellets
👆👆👆
thoughts on re-using non punctured sawdust bags? they will get sterilized in the pressure canner after all.
Sure you could give it a try! I usually don't just because the seams are more likely to rip the second time around, especially when you are mixing in your spawn. But it could be a significant cost savings to re-use bags - especially if you are making lots... that being said, then you will be unable to cut holes in the bags, or cut the tops off for fruiting. Whatever works for you!
FreshCap Mushrooms also better for enviro, did u build the flow hood? do u recommend a video or website for instructions. thanks
So just mix mycellium and wet wood shavings
Hmm tried this with wild honey mushrooms I found for my indoor growing chamber....got a question...lime green growth...the whole bag appears colonized...but just noticed a lime green growth around the top edges....this good bad? Keep toss? Break off the affected portion in a still air box?
With your standard mix do you always do 2.5# grain bags for all sawdust blocks or just the shiitake? I see on your site you site you recommend 10%-20% grain of the substrate material so that would only be a # per bag? Thanks for the great info Tony!
Hey Jesse! Ya, 10-20% is what I recommend for small scale hobby grows, just because it contaminates less and colonizes quicker IMO, but you can definitely get away with less. For Shiitake, you could even just add a tablespoon of spawn per 5 lb block, colonizes a little slower though. 1 pound per bag is overkill, but it works like a charm.
@@FreshCapMushrooms thanks tony!
Hi Tony, great videos! I’ve grown kits yrs ago, then got into shitake logs. Now I’m jumping in head first. One thing I have not seen in any videos is once you make and pc the bags with the supplemented saw dust, how long can you wait to do an inoculation? Can I wait a week…or two? If so is storing in a cleaned tub ok or should I seal the bags? It’s all about timing. I’ve got grain spawn jars with 8 different mushrooms and all are colonizing at different rates, so once I get the pc going I’d like to sterilize a bunch of bags, and inoculate as the jars are colonizing and ready to go? Thanks!
Google said 70% alcohol is better than 90% alcohol, because the water moves the alcohol around better.
Sorry to disturb you guys, is it possible to inoculate sawdust with another thing Than grain?
You need grain
Would it be a good idea to wear a face mask for this process?
Dont see how it could hurt to wear a face mask as long as it's very clean
how you call these type of bag and where can i get some ??
I'm also looking for this answer.
Myco bag I believe. Im not sure if that is the real name.
You can find them on ebay. You may find them cheaper if you shop around.
autoclave bags.
Unicorn bags

If I made 10 fruiting bags in a mediocre sterile environment (look at the standard laboratory measures and you'll laugh at this)... then I'll swab the entire bag... I'll do the same for bags I made in my garage.
anyone wanna bet me?
But it looks pretty cool with the weird bottles and gloves rofl
Do you put them in the dark?
Hey there! Nope, they will grow just fine under ambient light. No need for a dark room. The myc will grow fine in the dark as well though, so it works either way.
Thank you very much for another great video!I was looking for that question too-light,and what about the temperature ?@@FreshCapMushrooms
So imma skip about ~50-100% of the sterilization steps, because I'm broke and the internet's "budget" set ups are all out of my budget
Ummm.... ok lots of steps in the prOcess
A lot of over kill precaution i think
Not even close, you are growing fungus in nutrient rich environment, the extra precautions increases the chances of success, if done with no precautions not only are you likely to fail but it can also result in hidden dangers in what appears to be heathy culture but harbors a large colony of brain eating bacteria.
You clearly haven’t grown before
hi everyone ,if anyone else trying to find out growing mushrooms try Nevolly Mushrooms Maker Nerd (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my neighbor got great success with it.
Please get rid of the music
