Located on the South West Mainline, North of Southampton and 73 miles South of London Waterloo. This Hampshire town is home to the historic Eastleigh Works, now Arlington Fleet Services and a large mass of freight and marshalling yards. Featuring mostly container traffic to the local Southampton Docks, local spotters flock to the three platforms for views of rare and interesting workings commonly happening around the station.
This special episode shows an unabridged 24 hour period (through two attempts) around this busy South of England spot.
Part 1 includes:
- Black 5 'Sherwood Forester' on a tourist jolly to Winchester
- Scotrail 47712 Lady Diana Spencer bring coaches to Arlington
- LSL Class 37's with a rake of ex-EWS mk2's for refurb
- 69005 'Eastleigh' returns home on the Mountfield run.

Wait till you hear it powering out up the hill in part 2 mate. The black 5 working very hard with the duff really pushing hard to help at the back too.
Great selection Luke, thanks for sticking it out. It's quite a novelty to see the sparks fly with the third rail, doesn't clutter up the place as it does with all the overhead stuff! Do have a great Christmas, I trust you'll have bit of a relax and here's to a cracking 2024 for you and yours.

Brilliant video Luke and well done for your 24hr shift!! When I worked for Network Rail managing the Eastleigh network services, we were able to turn directionally sensitive traffic by running them via Chandlers Ford to/from Westbury to correct any traffic that was the ‘wrong way round’.

Thanks for another great video - excellent technique, mostly with tripod I assume, and you let the trains do the moving not the camera. Makes for very good viewing. Look forward to part 2. Happy New Year to you and cheers from Martin down under in New Zealand.
Thanks very much Martin, yeah that’s a conscious effort to not pan too often. I use a mix of tripods and a monopod when I don’t want to take up too much room on a platform. All the best for the New Year mate 👍🏻

You need to find something less arduous for these subscriber milestones however entertaining they may be. 24 hours on a UK station in winter is nuts - the equivalent of climbing the North face of the Eiger!
Haha I didn’t expect to ever be doing them so often mate but they’re a lot of fun. Hopefully we get another one a little closer to summer!

Thanks mate, at least those lulls gave me chance to get some grub or a drink. Stafford was a lot harder not having any time to leave the station for a break.
Eastleigh is a great spot. Used to be a lot busier but its still a good days worth of trains to see there.
Par for the course everywhere these days, but with a bit of luck we can still get decent days out.
Absolutely great stuff, sorry about the signal failure, but you still got a great variety of Loco’s. It’s worth knowing, exiting the Station, turn right and right over the bridge, and there is a superb, food and craft beer bar, called Steamtown, which brews its own plus guest beers. And of course you have Spoons Opposite.
Cheers John, it more than made up for it in the end. I got a breakfast in spoons after finishing, did mean to visit steamtown, I saw it on google maps but just didn’t have the time to get over there in the end. Next time!

Last time I went to Eastleigh was 1989. There was a good range of rolling stock coming and going, and it was a scorching hot day.

@@DiggleJunction 47's, 37's 33's mainly. Plus some BR Mk1 coaches parked in the sidings. I believe it was 9th August '89, that I went there. I was visiting my mate in Southampton.

😅I am new to the channel. A former resident of Southampton and now living in Suffolk. I actually have a press cutting of the first electric test train through Eastleigh back in the day.
Nice to have you Peter, blimey that’s a great keepsake. What year was that from?
I did 12 hours overnight at Crewe back in about 1987/88 and despite there being almost every class of loco there - 08s, 20s, 31s, 37s, 47s, (no 50s that far north though!), the very occasional 56 or 58 and even one of the few 25s or 45s that were still around, 81s, 85s, 86s and 87s, plus DMUs, EMUs, all kinds of freight wagons, tanks and a lot of mail vans all through the night - after 8 hours or so it was becoming a bit of a challenge to stay i. awake and ii. interested in whatever was about, but I couldn't leave as a I went up there by car with a few mates and two of them, including the driver, had buggered off somewhere else so I had to wait for him to return - this was way before mobile phones, obviously! Anyway, if I was currently wearing a hat, I'd take it off to you for managing 24 hours somewhere, especially these days. At least the 66s come in a variety of colours to keep things mildly interesting! 😀
Thanks a lot mate, it does get tough to stay enthusiastic getting close to that 24 hour mark to be honest. True about the 66’s, we’ll take what we can get when it comes to sheds haha. Bet Crewe was fantastic back in the day, it was still great when I was a kid in the mid to late 90’s!

Not too far off yeah, I did go to bed for a sleep after cancelling the first try though so only 24 straight. Haha at least a few red crossings out on 796 😂

Yeah mate, I knocked it on the head after stuff started diverting and began again at 7am the next morning.
Another corker of a 24H special ! These things happen I guess but you must have been knackered after getting up for being ready by 7 so not even a full night sleep beforehand! When did the issues become resolved and had you persevered overnight would you have got much?? Should have changed the Bingo sheet “Tesco Container” to “ONE Container” 🤣👍🏻
Thanks a lot Roy. They seemed to sort out in the early hours but there was so many delays I’d say only half or so of the trains ended up actually running so didn’t miss too much. I’d have got it really quick with a pink container haha.

How is 5z76 ecs classed as a railtour?
It’s a tenuous one tbh Mark, the tour finished a couple of stops up but with the halt for coal etc is a part of the trains tour. With the bingo being just a bit of fun I’ll class it as close enough.
