Hope you enjoy this one folks, it’s been a long time coming. I was absolutely thrilled to be able to film this for you all. The entirety of this video will go to Cancer Research UK so I want to say a sincere thank you for clicking on it. Cheers 👍🏻
You lucky guy great to see inside the old works ,I worked there from 1971 to 1987 as a coach trimmer can’t even get in there now so all cred to you . Regards Fred
Cheers Fred, glad I could give you a glimpse back in your old haunt. Sadly I couldn't show inside the coach building as the Belmond Pullmans were having some work done.
Seeing the 69 in the paint shop brought back some memories. I used to paint locomotives for a living. It’s the most satisfying thing a human being can do. It’s weeks of hard work , sanding , filling, primer ,more sanding, more priming ,more filling. But when you see the locomotive finished looking absolutely stunning. It’s worth all the effort.😊
My first thought when seeing that 73 was 'I wonder if that was one of the Gatwick Express ones'. Remember them so well shooting through East Croydon back in the 80's. So nice to have a tour of Eastleigh works, so much history to the place. I remember years ago I was mad on the history of the old Isle of Wight railways, reading about how they would send their loco's over to Eastleigh for major overhauls. Really interesting to see inside the place.
Nice one Luke! Reminded me very much of when BREL Crewe had their Open Days. Always something interesting to see and record. I lost my Mum and Dad to cancer, so your choice of Charity is a good one for me, so £4.99 sent. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Sincere thank you Darren, I’ve just donated the whole channels earnings from last month to Cancer Research UK of which your donation was a part so really appreciate it 👍🏻 hopefully if plans come together you might get a chance to see inside Crewe Diesel again soon 😉
That You to Arlington Fleet Services & GBRF I for one find videos like this very interesting as it gives you a insight as to how those brilliant paint jobs & the people who produce them I watched it with great interest
I love the Saturday walks around the works at Eastleigh, I usually manage a couple of trips each year, and always take hundreds of pictures (but nothing on social media 😂) Great film, well done 👍
A superb video. It's getting more and more difficult to see inside British industries now and with this one you've nailed it. Many thanks to all those who've made this possible.
Thanks a lot mate I appreciate that, took a lot of arranging but they were absolutely brilliant in helping get it sorted. Glad you enjoyed it, makes it worth the effort.
Cheers mate, yeah big hats off to em as I know it’s not the usual thing so chuffed to bits they said yes. Already made one donation thanks to all you guys and will have another next month! 👍🏻
Well Luke, what an experience! Thanks so much for sharing this with us and also to aid such a great cause too. You had a good rapport with Carl which really brought it alive and he's obviously an enthusiast himself. I have been to Eastleigh Works on an Ian Allan locospotters trip in April 1958, it was the second works of the day following on from Swindon Works where steam locos were still being built! I've still got the ticket.
Very surreal, I never really saw them growing up as a kid in the North West but always loved the look of them. Fingers crossed the plans to use the finished set for railtours will come to fruition sooner rather than later.
Nice to see 73101 still in reasoable shape. Whilst I realise that it may still be primarily scource of spares I hope that GB Railfreight do not lose sight the fact that it is the first JB 73 built and that it has a future ahead of it in a running condition.
Thanks for putting that together Luke, and to Arlington for letting you visit - brilliant stuff! I have to say I love 009's livery - when I was little my parents took me on a day trip to Bristol Zoo, Waiting at Temple Meads for our train home a massive (to a 6 year old!) red diesel engine pulled in - it was a maroon Western and that started a lifelong interest in diesel locos! Bit disappointed with 010's scheme, I was hoping for railfreight grey/red stripe - but as Carl mentioned that as one of his favourites, you never know! 🙂
That’s an awesome memory mate, we all seem to have one of those moments that cemented this hobby for life, mine was on my Grandads shoulders on Todmorden station and a 37 came round the bend with a load of empty four wheel coal hoppers, you can imagine the noise haha. I think 012 is the next to get a special paint job.
Whatever hoops you had to jump through Luke, were, I think, well worth it. Great episode and thoroughly interesting and enjoyable. I think Western Consort looks great. 73101 is almost as old as me and looks better. Ha Ha. 👍👍👍👍👍
Absolutely brilliant video...to see things that are rarely seen by outsiders is something very special indeed, special to someone as train mad as me. Thankyou so so much for posting this wonderful video 👍
The team at Arlington are brilliant & the paint shops quality is exceptional final result, I have been around the works quite a few times as i am part of the team on 50021 Rodney & 50026 Indomitable. Actually you have been around more of the works than i have but it amazes me the size of the place .
Hi Luke, another excellent video. Well done for getting permission to go around the works. I love the colour of 69009. Living in Bristol, I am old enough (and some more) to remember the Western Hydraulics in their heyday. They were a particular favourite class of mine, so top marks to GB Railfreight for this livery.
Cheers Mike, much appreciated. I see what Carl meant when we said he was worried it might not pull off what GBRF wanted but I think they knocked it out of the park.
I saw that amazing uncovered poster on Huddersfield station a couple of months ago with the green and cream ones on show, fantastic. I remember them in the metro red and cream at Donny and Leeds when I was a young lad.
fantastic video Luke what a wonderful place and so big had no idea it was this big its absolutely massive nice to see 69009 before after that maroon colour looks awesome . thanks for taking us round really enjoyed it and many thanks to Arlington fleet services take care a t b syd👍
Thanks Luke - very interesting vid. Last time I visited Eastleigh works was in steam days! I like the 69 livery - was a teenager when the class 52s were new in a variety of colours, but maroon was definitely the best, and it looks great on the 69. All the best from NZ, Marty
This place is massive. I went round Swindon when I was a teenager but Eastleigh seems to be larger. So glad it has been kept open for the purpose it was built for. I presume engines were built there once upon a time.
It was huge mate, as I mentioned in another comment there were also a couple of huge workshops I couldn’t show. Once upon a time the Southern Built their engines there.
The 141 had twin Leyland TL11 engines and Leyland SCG gearboxes, basically Leyland National mk2 running gear. That 141 lived at Earls Colne museum, and was advertised for sale a few years back.
Cheers for that info Martin, really was a bus for the rails in those early iterations of pacers. I believe it’s owned by LSL and heading to the Margate museum in time.
Thanks a million Tom 👍🏻 the whole channel is not for profit and goes back into making better vids but 100% of this one will be going to charity so it’s massively appreciated.
Your intro requested we enjoy, no need; that was a given. Another great vid from the Diggle Movie Master. Thanks a lot Luke , I could see you enjoyed yourself but I'm not too keen on the maroon 69 - after all that hard work: no doubt others will love it.
Thanks a lot Bill, really appreciate that. I was thrilled to be there which comes across (maybe a little too much) but I’m glad people seem to be enjoying it. Was a bit apprehensive about having so much of my unedited blathering haha.
hi Luke, great video, you are so lucky. its a great place, glad to see the london transport Sarah Siddons is being looked after, its a pity 73,101 is in a state, it used to look great in pullman colours.
Thanks very much Peter and I certainly am! Not sure when the covers will come off Sarah but I bet she’ll look stunning. Agree with 73101, at least she’s responsible for keeping all the others up and running.
Belting video Luke, still a sprawling place, it’s nice to see. Still think scotrail livery is the best all these years later, remember seeing it for the first time at Queen St then happening to be at Chester station a few weeks back when 47712 turned up, I was made up I was! Not sure about the maroon, think I like it, it’s certainly interesting. Top dude taking you round, I’m old enough to have got in all these places on a Sunday morning back in the day, many happy memories. Keep up the good great work pal. 🙏👍🏻
That must have been a nice surprise mate, 712 looks fantastic especially when they pair it with the push-pull set. Glad I could bring back some nostalgia 👍🏻 cheers John.
From the paint shop with the class 43, when the lads turn round and you see the long road with tracks to the right… this then second man, driving a 350 shunter ( 08) had to brake when he saw his “ train” rising into the air! On examination, we found someone had left a refuse bin under the offending wagon… We uncoupled the wagon and pulled the rest of the train towards the departure roads. I never heard anymore about this partial derailment and often wonder how the Shunting crew explained it away. Happy BR Blue days!

Ha good memories mate, must have been an awesome experience working over there through all those eras. 69009 was at Keighley this last weekend and still very weird hearing them “ying” like 66’s.
Wonderful to get access to a live works. Many thanks to Arlington for their generosity. How about a 69 in Golden Ochre? That might upset the purists? Great video all round.
Fantastic video, thank you for your time in arranging it and getting there and thanks to the good folk at Arlington for allowing the visit, did you pop to the Wetherspoons over the road for your well earned pint?
Thanks a lot mate, I went into the appropriately named “The Station” in town. Got a breakfast in the Spoons after finishing the 24 hour special last time I was down, great stuff.
@@DiggleJunction nice one, if you are down there again, try the Steam Town Brew Co, it's over the bridge at the North of the station, in the back room it has seats & tables out of (I think) Mk2 carriages - nice place to relax with a pint or a bite to eat!
Hope you enjoy this one folks, it’s been a long time coming. I was absolutely thrilled to be able to film this for you all. The entirety of this video will go to Cancer Research UK so I want to say a sincere thank you for clicking on it. Cheers 👍🏻

I can imagine mate, must have been an incredible feeling seeing all that hard work come off. What kind of stuff did you used to work on?

Great minds think alike Steve. Would have loved to see them back in the day, bit before my time of travelling down to the capital sadly.

its an amazing place, and great that the works still operates. Carl is a Brilliant guy so we're very privileged to have both our 50s based there
Here here, your 50’s have been performing great on the gala scene over the last few weeks mate 👍🏻 hiccups at Swanage aside haha.
Great vid. Went there in an open Sunday in the seventies. A real workshop.
Thanks mate, I wonder how much it’s changed since then.
Cracking video, it brought back a lot of memories. Good to see my namesake still looking well
Thanks a lot mate, glad I could bring you some nostalgia 👍🏻
Wow those carriages were stunning
Looked stunning with their brand new paint mate.
Loved the tour round an iconic place which is a vital part of the railway industry . 69009 , stunning livery .
Cheers Brian, glad you enjoyed it mate!
69009 looks fire!!
Totally agree mate 🔥
I'm so envious Luke, but thank you so much for this fantastic video.
I would have kissed that 37, I'd have probably cried with happiness too.
Haha if ever a video was my pleasure to produce it was certainly this one. Glad you enjoyed it ☺️

That 37 looks fantastic, I first seen it back in the mid 70s in BR blue of course 😂. Fabulous video for a great cause ❤
Thanks a lot Ian, haha yeah a bit more standout nowadays than it would have been back then!

I was at Eastleigh a few days ago and I saw 69009 pulling some rolling stock into the works she looked great in her new livery

Hi just caught your Eastleigh tour just to say that the London transport coach have been seen at the north Norfolk heritage railway at sherringham
Thanks for that info Roslyn, I’ve seen some pictures of them finally out and about.
Wow what an insight great content Luke !👏 it looks and feels like a 1950’s works .!👏👏👏👏
Thanks a lot pal, yeah that main shop where the 73’s and 142 was really felt like an old steam works.

Half the locos in there were probably there in the 80’s too haha. In contrast the Hitachi area we couldn’t show looked ultra modern like a lab.

The blood and custard set on the move looked fantastic.... pity it had to get wet🤭
Haha I’d have wanted to wait until it dried out a bit 😂 looked amazing in person, was like a mirror.
You are absolutely right about annoying adverts; but since it is in a good cause I'll forgive you (only joking).
Haha it’s why I can’t have mid-video ads, too annoying 😂 cheers Sarah.
Has the name Chad Varah been removed from the Pendolino set? Chad Varah founded the Samaritans in London.
I’ve just checked my database and as long as it’s up to date for the week (which it’s supposed to be), 157 is still named Chad Varah 👍🏻
