The Mountain Girl
Director: Don McDougall
Writer: John Furia (as John Furia Jr.)
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 13 May 1962 USA
Filming Locations: Stage 17, Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
The title character in the May 13, 1962 Bonanza episode "The Mountain Girl" is Trudy Harker, played by Nina Shipman. Raised in the hills by her reclusive grandfather Seth (Will Wright), Trudy is left in Joe Cartwright's care when Seth dies. Honoring a promise to the girl's late grandfather, Joe is determined to transform the hoydenish Trudy into a "lady", so that she can move into the San Francisco mansion of her other grandfather, wealthy Josiah Harker. Written on rottentomatoes.com
Reviews:
"Michael Landon finds a dying Will Wright on the trail and brings him back to Wright's home in the high country where he's a sheepherder. He exacts a promise from Landon to take his granddaughter to her rich other grandfather out in San Francisco.
It turns out to be a major undertaking as all the Cartwrights pitch in to help Little Joe turn this mountain Eliza Doolittle into a lady.
Nina Shipman steals this episode with her portrayal of the shepherd's granddaughter who discovers she's the closest thing we Americans have to princesses. Good performances from Carl Benton Reid as the other grandfather and Warren Oates as the shepherd who was courting Shipman before learning of her wealth.
A frontier My Fair Lady." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

I always get so tickled at how studiously Adam looks out the window while Trudy holds up her new undergarments 😂😂
❤
Without a doubt , Bonanza is one of the greatest TV shows ever , it was just a very different world and way of life back then with other values and less poison on the airwaves among other things !
I grew up watchin Bonanza with my dad. Whenever I feel the need to "go home" I'll watch some Bonanza again.
Even though she was born and raised in the mountains, Trudy just warmed my heart when that poor little lamb was hurt and she tenderly bandaged the wound up. ❤❤❤. Great stories like Bonanza are not only educational but also inspirational, because I think that Human kindness and love should not be overtaken by greed and hatred. #PeaceLoveandRespect+Unity=Prosperity. It's just a simple mathematic.
I cried everytime i watched this one the end was so heartwarming they dont make shows like this one anymore so underrated...I wonder if they get to see the people still watch it from the pearly gates.
Loved This Show Especially Seasons 3-6 Of The Adam Years And 7-13 Candy And Jamie Era As Well I Watched This Show On Sunday Nights After Wild Kingdom And Disney Great Times Back Then
Out of all the episodes, this one was always my favorite
Just loved how Nina Shipman played Trudy, a breath of fresh air, with no fakeness, about her.
She looks like the character Samantha Stevens from Bewitched ;)
@@mrmacgregorshomestead233 She sure do.
@@mrmacgregorshomestead233 to me the way she talked she reminded me of Elly may from the Beverlyhill billys
@@natvan29 yes!
@Mr MacGregor's Homestead No she doesn't!
That was one of the best Bonanza episodes ever. I hope Trudie kept at least one of the dresses. 😀
hahaha 💕 👏 🙌
@Ken Bina. I loved the purple dress! 💜. I would love to have dresses like that.
The storyline, the comedy and the use of the English language are just magnificent. I just love the part where Hop-Sing was running up and down and said "Five people yelling all the time. Only one Hop-Sing"😂😂😂
You can take a girl out of the mountain, but you can't take the mountain out of a girl.
That's so true. My late mother grew up in Boston, Massachusetts. My late dad grew up on a farm in Wisconsin. There's a saying that fit my dad to a "t." That saying is "you can take the man out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the man." My mother tried to, but she couldn't do it.

Yeppers. And you can take the gal out of west Tx, but you can't take west Tx out of the gal.
Well said brother
I think this is Ellie Mae Clampett's great grandmother. She likes her critters.😊
I have nearly been binge watching this wonderful series. Pernell Roberts is one of the best actors ever in the craft or entertainment. I think much of his performances is simply Mr. Roberts own self...he steals and shines in every scene he is in. I read most women love him and many men would not mind appearing ass Pernell Roberts. His silent acting at the supper table was superb.
I do wonder whether Adam were to teach Trudy, whether it would have been more deep and meaningful.
DEP
Appearing ASS ?
Little Joe's look and mannerism when pa walked in and when the girl broke the chair is priceless. Mike's performance in Bonanza is absolutely where I fell completely head over heels. He's a great actor, well all of them was. My gosh how I wish we could have some of these lovely actors back, no indecent language, no sex ,nakedness just refreshing. Miss you guys hundreds ♥️♥️♥️
Huge amounts of sexism though.
@@julianskinner3697 We never heard about sexism them days though.
@@julianskinner3697 only in your modern woke notions
@@julianskinner3697 No there wasn't. I miss the days when truly feminine women like me were treated like ladies. I love to wear dresses. I love it when a gentleman opens the door for me, lets me go into a room first, and treats me with old-fashioned chivalry. I hate it when so many women act like men.
Mountain Girl was one of the Merry Pranksters
It's episodes like this that really made Bonanza such a wonderful show.

she's just flat out adorable
Bonanza was always my favourite show
I love their faces at 19:31. And the way Adam stares out of the window.
✌️❤️😂🤣😆
You don't know how to talk about Adam that you say nonsense as he looks out the window...please, a little understanding...your Adam was bland, ugly, gangly, bald...although Pernell was a good person, that's what's important RIP
👍🤣
Look closer that looks like a painting background 😂😂
@@deezzyhayes Yes, it does look like that.
Ode to simpler times, how we miss thee.
The acting in 1960s TV was the best.
Nice to see my favorite actor Warren Oates in this episode (as Paul)!
I think that we owe a big round of applause to our newest, bestest buddy, and big toe... Sergeant Hulka.
I love the way that the Cartwrights can dec out everyone that comes to stay!!!!
This is a truly delightful story with a unique but well written finale. Trudy is a real lady, far better than her brash, and probably jealous cousin.
Every time I see Hop Sing, I want Chinese food!
campy as it is, it looks like this show had more to say than most of todays tv productions. heartwarming
Wonderful story. Fine resilient girl! 🤩🙏🏼
Yet another episode that makes you think about others how to care about others this show truly was meant to teach us how to respect just respect other's thank you so much
After grandpa said they where high and mighty, and then said I didn't raise you to marry no sheep hearder.
I had an old girlfriend named Carol Carter I still think of her.
@Carol. Your English mechanics really stink! 🦨 🤮👎

Wonderfully scripted, acted and directed. One wonders what a sequel to this episode might have revealed about these great characters. Many thanks!

👍👌👏😁 What a woman! All natural and extremely pretty. Thanks a lot for uploading and sharing this old series.
Best regards luck and health.
What I liked about this show in its early years is that it was a great training ground--like The Twilight Zone--in giving young actors/actresses a chance to show off what they could do. The main cast--Lorne Greene was already established as an actor. But the guest stars...here, Warren Oates, who later took crazy to new levels, Charles Bronson, Barry Sullivan (already a well-known actor) Lee Marvin, Tim Matheson, DeForest Kelly (semi-established at that time), Leonard Nimoy, and many more, this was one of their many acting jobs before they went on to bigger things.
That was by design. None of the stars were known. They wanted to draw an audience with famous guest stars, and many times they were paid more than the cast per episode.
Great comment. That's a show all its own.
James Coburn, Carroll O' Connor, Dawn Wells, Marlo Thomas.
"HOWG BACK N TURNUPS" LMAO!! AWESOME!!
This was one of the best Bonanza Episodes, ti Brough back some of these values of the past. Thank you
Stories with a message about how to live an honorable life. A pity we don't see more of that today. This country has gone off the rails.
Oh please... This is a Hollywood show. Sure, sometimes the episode make one think. As for an honorable life, try Martin Luther King, Maya Angelou, Mohammed Ali, Jesse Jackson....
Gone off the rails on a crazy train......
What a great comment. My feelings also. Thank you Sir.
@@edoedo8686 oh please...
Talking from just an entertainment - television point of view..
One show it's true colors Cartwright men had gem hearts
Another heartwarming episode with the kind of morals which we USED to have in this country!
This was before they INTENTIONALLY destroyed every good show on TV, so they could mold America into the sewer they wanted it to become. It was called the rural apocalypse or something like that.
You mean, the kind of morals we used to have on TV in this country, don’t you?
@@johnperrott6450 No, I meant exactly what I said. USED to.
@@johnperrott6450 Thank You. Why SO polite ?
@@joeowens6180 Well Joe, I’ll be 70 in April and I don’t remember the morals in this country back then being better than they are now. It seems to me that we just didn’t discuss the ugly stuff as much. TV is the perfect example. Back then, you weren’t allowed to review and discuss certain problems so many people were simply not aware. Perhaps you were one of them.
I always enjoy Bonanza's stories.
Such a lovely girl, reminds me of ELLY-MAY CLAMPETT !
That's what I thought
But not nearly as annoying.
Great Episode. One of many favorites. 😊
It’s refreshing to have an episode where little joe has a female friend and it doesn’t turn romantic. (Ironically, it’s this type of girl I think he’d be cute with)
Getting romantic with a Cartwright was dangerous for your health on that show.
@@yaimavol It was practically a death sentence.

That's a real mountain girl.
Couldn't find a woman like Trudy today... darn it! Straightforward and full of life!
If there has been a young woman like Trudy when I was a young man I would have already been married and had children with her. Darn as well.
Women would love a man like Trudy hard to find
Exactly. Now their crooked and full of lies..
Glad I'm alone!
You are wrong. Apparently you have been looking in all the wrong places
@M John THAT'S WELL SAID AND I AGREE WITH YOU COMPLETELY!! My late English mother brought me up as a born again Christian and she brought me up in the Victorian style.
Pygmalion, My Fair Lady, interpreted as a western. We still have our mythology. They teach cultural values to each generation. Bonanzas actors are gone. It’s important that we keep the lesson in this episode.
I'm impressed that you picked up on that, and yes, it's a timeless story that should live on.
Funny how the Nevada Cartwrights know so much about the goings on in San Francisco.
They go there from time to time.
And they always stop in Stockton on the way to visit the Barkleys. (I hear that once they even offered them a straight-up trade-Hop Sing for Silas. But the Barkleys refused.)
Hahahaha. Looks at the horse like. Who's is that car in the driveway lol. Good clean old tv. Love these old programs.
Yes...LOL
Trudy's cousin Stephanie is a spoiled brat!! I'm glad that Trudy and her grandfather realized that.
I'm so glad I can still see these shows.
Great episode! Some of the music played on Trudy at the Ponderosa reminded me of the 1990's video game The Sims lol.
Hop Sing is the best !!
Love his name too.
One of the finest shows, true colours are always honourable, put on is okay for sometime, a gem is always hidden
Your English mechanics are bad. Also, the way that you spelled "colors" and "honorable" are the British spellings- not the American spellings.
The lady fixing Trudy's hair was Alice's friend who took over for her when she left and became a waitress on the Brady Bunch.
The charme of this episode is overwhelming
You misspelled the word "charm."
I'm a mountain man and I love mounting women !

I love the part where Trudy Tells her cousin Stephanie off. I loved it cause you could see the cartwrights well the boys I don't know about Ben were trying not to smile it looked like they were proud of Trudy for standing up for herself and her man
YOUR ENGLISH MECHANICS REALLY STINK!! 🦨🤮👎. You need to go back to school and learn how to use proper English mechanics, you idiot!
Man.. I miss that time
I’ve been binge watching also. Adam is the best of the boys in almost every respect.

@Jessie. Your English mechanics are really bad. Even though you're from Germany, you should learn the proper way to use English mechanics.
@@lynettepalecek3141 Well, you're never going to stop learning. That counts for everyone and everything. I'd always try to improve. Nobody's perfect. 💁 Not with your native nor a foreign language.
@Jessie Sungmanitou My English mechanics are excellent! My English mechanics are much better than the average American's. If I was in Germany, I wouldn't make a comment to a video in German on the internet unless I knew that my comment was perfect. That's good that you want to keep learning! I'm glad to hear that! 🙂. A lot of Americans are too lazy to want to keep learning the proper way to use English mechanics.
