    If I remember right, weren't the Reapers also described as basically like scavengers? They had to actively seek out paradoxes and things like that to prey on, but aren't an actual rule of the universe or anything. Just like say, a random vulture in the US isn't gonna be suddenly aware there's a dead animal to eat over in Canada.

    • @sophiefilo16
      @sophiefilo16 6 лет назад +67

      Yeah, they fed off the paradox and had to actually travel to find it. They don't just appear as though the universe is trying to correct itself...

      That sounds right... opportunistic scavengers that aren't always present when a paradox occurs. Also, I thought reapers only show up when someone crosses their own time stream to affect significant change to a fixed event, and then only because Time Lords weren't around to intervene.

    I know you guys discussed it but I'll just clarify if any of you are still unsure. (How I think the reapers work that is)
    The reapers appeared in the rose episode because time played out one way and then they immediately went back in time and changed it.
    With how time works in Doctor who, once you see/read/do anything once it basically becomes fixed, that's why the doctor doesn't go back in time to places where he failed to save someone in the past and then try to fit it, because he has already seen it and so is now fixed.
    He can go to places where he hasn't been to before, but can only affect that particular "time" once. He can visit it again, but not change anything.
    So when rose interacted with herself she changed fixed time essentially. That's why the reapers came.
    Every other instance (that I can think of) when the doctor and gang interacted with themselves, it was always meant to happen that way.
    If the doctor met a past self and then had an adventure that would be fine.
    But if he then went back in time again and tried to do the same adventure with the two past selves, he'd be changing fixed time, and that would be a case where the reapers would appear.
    Also side note: reapers wouldn't always appear I don't think anyway, how I remember the doctor explained them was that they were like an infection/virus/etc.. from another dimension, and when fixed time gets broken, they slip in from this other dimension through the skin of the universe. So if they're not around a certain place they may not even appear.
    Who knows it's all timey wimey....
    Hope that helps, and hope I haven't just confused everyone even more... Which is a possibility 😂😂

      I personally never got: 'Earthshock.' Why couldn't: 'The Doctor,' have gone back in time to save: 'Adric?' They never saw him die. All they saw was the ship exploding, with information, he was last seen still on it. They could have just materialized, in the space-ship, right before it exploded, grabbed him and left, and nothing would have changed, for their past selves.

      The Doctor can sense fixed points. Maybe he knew that that’s how it had to go? Even if it didn’t change their timelines, it still could’ve changed someone else’s. Butterfly effect and all that. Timey Wimey.

    I have a simple explanation for how he did that wibbly lever thing. Supposedly according to quantum physics every choice that can happen does and will happen, and our looking back at events is "survivor's bias". Meaning there's a few hundred universes in which they failed and imploded and we're just seeing the one where they succeeded.

    • @somedudeontwitterstalkedme3829
      @somedudeontwitterstalkedme3829 6 лет назад +7

      This is the answer, well stated and well explained on your part (not trying to be a smartass, this was really well stated)

    • @JamesCPotter13
      @JamesCPotter13 6 лет назад +16

      That's how I've always seen it. We only see the version that pulled the wibbly lever. Maybe he pulled EVERY SINGLE ONE and only the one that worked went back and told himself.
      Basically a more confusing version of what you so eloquently put.

    • @anonymes2884
      @anonymes2884 6 лет назад +3

      This in fact is just one _interpretation_ of quantum physics, now popularly known as the "many worlds" interpretation (though the guy who came up with it, Hugh Everett III, called it the "relative state" interpretation). We don't know if it's actually true and it's worth saying that though it's gaining in popularity, most physicists currently _don't_ subscribe to this interpretation (the traditional view, called the Copenhagen interpretation, is probably still the most popular although what amounts to basically _no_ interpretation, or effectively just ignoring the question, sometimes called "shut-up and calculate" is up there too - there are many different ways to interpret what the mathematical formalism of quantum physics actually _means_ for reality, "many worlds" is just one).

    • @somedudeontwitterstalkedme3829
      @somedudeontwitterstalkedme3829 6 лет назад +1

      It is the one interpretation that fits with what was asked and discussed in the reaction video. The rest brings in facts that were not a part of the initial discussion. That is why I stated what I did, in response to the video this was/is the best answer.

    • @anonymes2884
      @anonymes2884 6 лет назад +2

      Tazmon Sims It fits what happens in "Space" and "Time" but it actually _doesn't_ fit the rest of 'Doctor Who' in my view - the show has characters moving into the past of _their own_ universe (creating branches in "many worlds"' universal wave function in the process, if that were true in the show) and then moving back to _their own_ present or future. AFAIK we're never told at any time that they're actually jumping around in some subset of infinite universes or that changes they make won't affect the future because effectively _all_ possible futures occur anyway - in fact we're told the exact opposite _many_ times ("ripples, tidal waves" etc.).
      That said, my main issue (and what I was really responding to) was with the OP's claim that "Supposedly according to quantum physics every choice that can happen does and will happen..." because that's just not true (I wish it were, that what quantum physics _meant_ was a settled question but it's _really_ not).

      tell that to the lack of time reapers in any other episodes besides their initial appearance.

    • @Mr_M_
      @Mr_M_ 6 лет назад +8

      The reapers were a mistake on RTD's and writer Paul Cornell's part. That episode acted as if Classic era Doctor Who never happened, and the rest of the Revived era acted as though it did, continuing with the rules which had been set out prior to 'Fathers Day'; in that, paradoxes can occur without some weird parasites appearing. It's better to just forget the rules that 'Fathers Day' tried to introduce because they don't work with the rest of Who Lore. Stephen Moffat has stated himself he began making Doctor Who episodes for Doctor Who fans, rather than casual audiences, and so his stories would adhere to Classic Era time travel and paradoxes - that's why we never saw the reapers again, because they were fuckin stupid.

    The Time Reapers
    1. They don't always appear. You don't always get an infection when your skin breaks, neither would the Reapers always appear after time breaks.
    2. Rose saving her dad was more that altering a fixed point, messing with your personal timeline, or creating a paradox. She did all three, which I'd guess made that specific wound a metaphysical gusher.
    3. They were hunted to extinction off-screen, in a comic or something.

A bit timey wimey Wibbly wobbly 😂 but yeah that's why they don't show up every time just see them as vultures of time. something dies in the wild but vulture dont always show up.

Moffat gave us amazing highs like Heaven Sent, The Day of the Doctor and the series 10 finale, but that only made the bad stuff like Hell Bent even more infuriating. It was always up and down with him. So often he got in his own way. He's amazing at the set ups, like in series 6, but by the end it fell completely flat because he over-complicated it so much. However, there's still a lot to be admired in Moffat's era, it certainly wasn't all bad. I do miss the consistency of the RTD era though, hopefully Chibnall can bring it back.
