Mechanical keyboards are a huge and growing trend these days, and it's hard to know what you really want! ASUS ROG put something together that is a bit of everything; RGB, stability, custom switches, and build quality. It's not cheap, though.

I liked how James seemed so natural and genuinely excited about the keyboard. I'd buy it, but it costs about the minimum wage here in Brazil, not yet considering import fees and shipping...
Teclado pra gente é só os de escritório de Microsoft
Hes the LTT keyboard snob. Its his niche
Import fees are 90% of the product + shipping, so you end up paying more in taxes than in the product itself... yikes!

Decent Mechanical kbs are reaching budget level as well
I am the only one who was impressed by audio montage at 3:12 where background music is reacting to every button pressed/moved on the keyboard? :D Loving that kind of details.
Just came to look if anyone else noticed it. Very subtle but brilliantly done.
That's what you get when you have passionate people working on things they like, being paid affordable rates and have a decent work environment.
To be honest, I never had braided cables before my Razer Viper Ultimate and ROG Strix Claymore II. Now I completely understand the love for them.
Highly appreciate the build quality of these keyboards, considering that I'm sad for giving up a custom keyboard for the removable keypad on my Claymore...
@@lllhunterlll9644 If my Viper Ultimate spontaneously combusts, I'll keep it in mind!
Boards like this always remind me of the MadCatz Strike 7 with swappable LCD touchscreen, bazillions of buttons, adjustable palm wrests (yes plural), swappable NUMblock and whatnot. That was 2012 for 300USD. James should do a nostalgic video with old keyboards. Do not forget Steelseries 6Gv2, love that thing.
That was my dream keyboard back then, didn't get one, but still have a RAT7 mouse in a closet somewhere
2:28 Happy to see I'm not alone in this. Lived in Canada pretty much my whole life and I don't have a concept when faced with imperial units.
Man, I actually really like the pixel art "matrix" for different things you get above the numpad, looks really well executed. The only thing is, once you start going up in price, I'd like big manufacturers to include a dust cover for wired or pouch for wireless keyboards.
Could have talked about stuff like where the LEDs are facing and if the switches come pre-lubed since it's basically an "enthusiast competitor" keyboard with its hot-swappable switches and price tag.
I think switch and click made a video on it going in depth. But yea LTT isnt known for making the best keyboard content so can't blame them really.
@@corecombat26 it's also a shirt circuit video, not an LTT video, or a full review. He even closed the video saying it's not a review. It's just a first glance at a product, not a deep dive into everything about it
Thanks we have incldued a cover for some of our more portable wireless solutions such as the ROG Falchion ( which includes a top cover/diffusion tray ).
You can create your own programmable split keyboard for less than this aggressive gamer themed hunk.
At this price it's competing with entry level custom boards like GMMK Pro or Keychron Q Series. Needless to say those boards completely smoke the Flare 2 in terms of typing experience, feel and sound, materials.
The matrix display is the only thing going for this.

This cracked me up
I keep wanting a stats screen for my CPU, GPU and other things.
Back then, i was eyeballing the madCatz Strike 7 for precisely it's display - and they even had a cool little SDK, I think it was essentially a C++ lib.
Haven't found something as cool as that since. This keyboard however is shockingly close to that!
Its cool when big companies start to learn from the more niche markets. It would have been epic if they built a fingerprint sensor into that Play/Pause button for windows Hello.
I love the look of the keyboard, if I was in the market for one it would definitely be on my list
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THESE NEW ROG KEYBOARDS. I HOPE THEY ARE RELIABLE THOUGH.
But armory crate kinda makes BSOD to me. USB tracing issues.
This video had such a chill vibe to it! The keyboard is pretty cool but I prefer the TKL layout.
This keyboard looks really nice. I love dedicated media keys. The led reminds me a lot of the g15. Not a lot of super solid hot swap boards that I've found either even the evga one gets twangy it's so light.
Thanks for your feedback, we also have the FLARE II coming should you not want hotswap or the Animate display and a few other items.
@@ASUSUSA I'm always on the lookout for a hotswappable keyboard that is so dense it could be used to bludgeon someone :)
I have the thermaltake x1 rgb with silver switches.. it was expensive as hell, i got lucky found it so random at bestbuy for $89, totally customizable great wrist rest, really nice kb.. for like half price.. i got super lucky but this keyboard seems even nicer.. wow tech has come a long way
Buying keyboards on sale is always nice. Lenovo has their k500 with an msrp of $120 but its usually on sale for $80. I got it from the amazon renewed store for $30. Its got a couple shortcomings but its a great feeling keyboard for the money i’ll say that much
Love the banjo back, clicky feel, wrist rest and the flickering logo that becomes an equalizer or a clock. Gotta have it. 💓. Thank you.
Very nice keyboard! This one goes on my wishlist. Well done!
Ordered huntsman elite, Razer g513 and finally this bad boy. Oh my, it is not even comparable to other 2 in any shape or form, different class of it's own. Build quality, key feel (nx brown), wrist rest is all excellent. It's a hefty price to pay but I am extremely happy with this keyboard!
I’ve had the strix flare 1 for around 2 or 3 months, i loved it, but after that period of time the spacebar went wrong, the problem was that You couldn’t hold it down it just would not recognize itself being held down.
no detachable cable feels just like a huge missed opportunity
probably because of the usb passthrough
I bet if they had two models 90 percent of people would opt out of the passthrough for detachable instead
@@aquaventus They could still do that with a daughterboard inside, I am pretty sure.
@@beseakos sure, but then they would lose an excuse to make a 'premium' model with detachable cable
@@aquaventus they could make the revenue back easily by making a series of premium cables. Just like how cablemod jumped on the hypetrain for coiled usb cables for keyboards lol. Now that they are using all the buzzwords everyone else uses on the market, hotswap, casefoam and lubed stabs (even though they are propriatery and prevent the use of different keycaps on stabilized keys). In all honesty Asus needs to read the market more. North facing LEDs, non standard spacebar length and annoying propriatery stabs are not it.
TL;DR: still not an excuse, cables are accessories they can sell just as much in much higher volumes.
I like the exploratory nature of your review here, simultaneously informative and entertaining.
I searched a long time before finally deciding on the Flare. It's a nice keyboard, but I should have waited a bit longer. The sale price should have been a clue that a new model might in the pipes. We're never satisfied!
that’s a great idea to pass the light trough the wrist rest. I have a razer that has lights on the wrist rest and it always disconnects/reconnects causing problems with the software
Thanks for the feedback on the design, it is simple but novel implementation.
Thanks for this Short Shircuit, James!
I came into this review thinking this would be yet another keyboard. I was wrong. This keyboard has a lot of the features I like in my ergodox, and that dot matrix in the top right is awesome
Now it's down to their macro software. Hopefully it has good program detection, toggle key hold, and loops that don't break or stick.
Nice preview of "Anime Matrix Configurator" part of the vid, enjoyed it very much.
Ok that looks cool. Its also full-size keyboard which is my preference. Might be my next replacement, if my keyboard ever died on me.... which is probably abit far away considering I already have a pretty dang CoolerMaster MK750.
I just wish Topre makes their switch available more outside Japan and few keyboards. I don't particularly care about RGB, but backlight is pretty important for me.
Just a tip for everyone if you recommend a keyboard. Careful because the software have to be considered too.
Roccat is clonky but light (20mo RAM). Razer simpler but crazy HEAVY in ressources (400Mo RAM).
BUT asus i don't know if there is a standalone software but i would like too...
Because ARMORY CRATE is a nightmare to me. I only had it for my ROG Delta RGB and their useless overkill soft while not RAM hungry caused multiple random bluescreen with usb tracing issues and failed services unable to be recognized and makes BSOD. I couldn't disable it fully and it start with windows. That was back in december.
I have to consider Logitech. Their standalone soft for their G600 is Amazing.
If you are interest in og Tropre you might want to look at Leopold. Niz also a viable option.
@@Dhaydon75 Yeah I know of Leopold. There is also the HHKB too. But I want Full-size and backlight, so there is really not much else aside from OG Topre, and even then pretty much only 1 model
Finally nice to reach media buttons on the LEFT side of the keyboard if you happen to use a mouse with the right hand.
Im sorry to all the left handed folks but having it on the right drove me crazy for a long time
I hope the backlit RGB key LEDs last more than a few months. I've bought 2 Rog Strix Flares and both had the same issue. The first kept ghosting keystrokes as well as the lighting going out. Was trying to get my second keyboard sent in to be replaced (was still under warranty) but 'surprisingly' their warranty page has been down for months. First keyboard they claimed to already having been replaced even though I got it brand new and never sent it in.
Waiting for someone to put Bad Apple and/or Doom on that LED matrix thing. It's tradition.
I just bought this yesterday I'm stoked to get it now that I saw a bunch of features
So, how do you like it? Happy with it?
Only thing id love to see is dissassmbling it since the cable isnt type c changable and want to see if the cable is hard soldered or just a plug connector
Oh wow, the Dirty Mary song lyrics brought me back. Completely forgot about that song hahaha
Awesome review

i just want an extremely well built keyboard, like model M quality from a mainstream brand. Too many "gaming" keyboards feel like cheap toys but cost an arm and a leg.
Yup who needs a display on there keyboard anyway
You are better off buying a keyboard and modifying it. I suggest a Keychron pre built. It's not "gaming" it's just a well built keyboard.
You should look into custom keyboards, they are... expensive but they can be exactly what you're looking for.
Filco Majestouch 2. No backlight is probably the biggest con. It is a work horse. I've been using a single one for over a decade.
just buy a filco majestouch 2

Bought the keyboard. Your face in thumbnail image sold it to me.
That logo screen is so cool just make it a little higher on pixel count and rgb and it could do a lot and I would totally switch over but I currently have all Corsair so like it has to be perfect for me to break the ecosystem
I’m really liking these keyboard videos. I was hoping for USB-C on the keyboard end, though. It’s not like USB-C can’t handle data for the pass-through. Plus it would be better to have a cable you can easily replace should the one the keyboard comes with eventually go bad.
Being a passthrough i dont think its that big of a deal. Now the passthrough being 3.0 and higher at this point is needed.

@@shibasss "on the keyboard end"
A lot of the custom mechanical keyboards are USB-C, I don't see a single keyboard come out that isn't USB-C, there a few older designs out there still using using micro or mini USB but those just haven't been updated.
Same here, I don't get the USB pass-through on keyboards. They're all USB 2.0 only and I could buy a USB extension cable if I needed it.
I've been running the ROG Flare for a while now. love it. would upgrade to the Flare 2 when the time comes.
Which switches you went for and what do think of it?... I am a browns guy (middle ground), but I know for signature it varies sometimes.

A volume wheel and media playback buttons should be standard on keyboards now. The clicking wheel is a nice extra feature, but some things really should be standard in 2022.

Dumb in the prices as well.
Looks like a sweet keyboard. The temp monitor is what ill look for.
Did not see it mentioned in the video - these only support 3 pin switches and NOT the 5 pin switches
"ULTRA tactile browns" lmao
actually this is a well and pretty entretaining unboxing showing specifications and features by just hitting and not being extremely carefull, like youre not by touching the keyboard as it has ebola or something. I like it
Why no mention of the non-detachable cable? I have to deal with it on an early corsair k65 rgb and it can be a real pain in the ass sometimes. He mentions taking it to work... good luck with that
The first Strix Flare I bought was a nightmare... 4 times I have to get it exchange as it kept failing to start up due to the LEF lighting where it goes to sleep and never wake up... This one looks good though...
Damn, I need that keyboard as well! I'm actually looking to buy a keyboard right now too, but I don't know if I can justify that $219 price... It does have everything I'm looking for in a keyboard right now: full key set (no 60% or 80% boards), hot swappable switches that aren't only compatible with their proprietary switches, great RGB implementation, good software control of all it's features. I may just have to get this one!
please dont bro just take like a weekend to learn about custom keyboards you can get so much better for the same price if not way cheaper
Looking at the board, it looks like it only accepts 3 pin switches so the amount of aftermarket switches that you can buy for this are limited unless you clip the legs of 5 pin switches which is a bit of a hassle.
If you want a lower cost option check out our FLARE II. It will be coming out later but will not have a hotswap PCB design, and does not feature the Animate display.
@@ASUSUSA Thanks ASUS! I have been eyeing that model as well, as I don't need the Animate screen, but the lack of hot swappable switches really rules that one out for me.
@@bluegizmo1983 Understand we have dound that the vast majority of users do not use the hotswap design once they settle on a set of switches. This is partly why we designed and developed the ROG RX and NX switches to offer a quality option out of the box. That being noted the want to have customization is something we understand and will be looking at hopefully offering this on more keyboards in the future.
Linus Media grour or LTT or wahtever roducec an editorial or some other kind of comedy masterpiece once in a while. TY editors and writers and everyone else
Looking at the stabilizers, it looks like a strange combination of Cherry Plate Mount housing with Costar mounting/internals. Judging by the cutout on the plate, would it be possible to replace these stabilizers with Cherry-style plate mount stabilizers?
Finally a full size keyboard
i don't know why all these big brand keyboard still don't have design that the cable can be detached at the keyboard side. So much easier for cleaning.
I'm not saying I personally like or agree with their decision, but if you were genuinely curious, at least some of the reason is because it helps cut down on support tickets from "casuals"/"non-geeks" and/or people who are just plain rough / careless with their stuff. So it saves the company money with having to deal with fewer product returns/replacement/support costs.
Having a removable detachable USB cable means:
-someone could use an out of spec cable (RBG keyboards use a lot of power to light up the LEDs; a lot of them require a USB 3 spec cable cuz USB 2 can't provide enough power, and even then, not every USB 3 cable is properly up to spec).
-The USB connector on the keyboard can break if an attached cable is bent at too extreme an angle/with too much force (if someone is lazy and doesn't decide to detach the cable before, say, putting it in a bag to carry around)
-Technically, it's just one less thing to wear out over time, but I'm not giving this much weight because who actually unplugs their keyboard that frequently. Also technically, crumbs or gunk can make its way into the connector, but that's also super minor factor cuz it's not a phone that you regularly put into your pocket with will definitely collect lint.
It's also a bit cheaper to manufacture, but also a lame excuse IMO on anything but the most budget of keyboards.
We have multiple modles that offer a detachable cable design ( ROG Falchion, ROG CLaymore II and ROG STRIX SCOPE TKL ) all are USB-C.
This model due to having USB passthrough and 8K polling requires benefits form a fixed cable deisgn.
Still waiting for this to make the jump to ergonomic keyboard layouts. It is a shame those of us who enjoy our bent keyboards can not get swappable, mechanical rgb keys with interchangble keycaps. I would DEFINITELY be willing to pay out the premium for a good version of the two mashed together.
Someones high today... Lmao love it!!
The customizability of the matrix is sick
You should check the Steel Series Apex 5 with the small OLED screen.
This keyboard gets my stamp of approval.
Just picked up a RedDragon Horus TKL (K621-RGB), best value for money mech keyboard I've had. Can control 3 BT, a 2.4G & USB. Hot swappable keys. £70. Rocking deal.
0:36 for a second i thought my dog just made a noise lmao
Finally a fullsize gaming keyboard that has hotswap feature, wanna get one already although im using corsair k100
look into other brands other than the big names, they're usually better and cheaper, with hotswappability! (Keychron for example)
I have been thinking about custom keyboards for a while, but man stuff like the media control and the dot matrix screen really make me want this more than a custom keyboard. If only it was available in white though. (and if I had the money too :') )
