    Always put a little oil in the pot and sauté the chicken or any kind of meat for about 15 minutes before you add the other ingredients. Once you add the water and vegetables, then you put the lid on and pressurize the cooker. When you sauté you develop great flavor and a browning.

    I am SO GOING TO BUY THAT COOKER! I hate the stainless pots. I invariably get the dreaded "BURN" which makes it unfun to cook. The non-sticks are hard to find. Presto makes one, and I knew Farberware did also but the options on Amazon are upwards of $60. This is a heckuva good price for a nice piece of equipment. Good find, Rick! And the chicken/broccoli/potato/cheese dinner looks yummy, BTW.

    I just now today found the exact same one at my local thrift store for $25. It was missing the Tribbett and what looks like maybe a rice paddle that used to stand up in that holder on the side of this Gizmo but it's still had that little plastic condensation catcher in the back and the insert pot. I think I scored! It turns on I'm just trying to find the right recipe to test it for the first time. Thank you very much for this demonstration.

      Now you're making me anxious to try mine! I have a beef shank that I want to sear and make bone broth from. The way that I normally do it is to sear it in an extremely hot stainless steel skillet (after rubbing with Diamond Kosher Salt and Nature's Seasoning) and then cook it over top of carrots, onion, celery, ginger, turmeric, and a few spices and herbs for taste. It has to cook for a good 8 to 10 hours at extremely low temperature and a crock pot always ends up boiling the thing to death! That's why I decided to get one of these adjustable cookers. I think it's far safer than leaving it in the oven at 200° inside of a dutch oven for many hours. I'm always scared to death to fall asleep with the oven going.
      I can't quite figure out how to adjust the temperature on this but I'll figure it out.
      Happy cooking 👩‍🍳
      ADD/EDIT: I don't just drain the broth and throw all the veggies and meat out. If seared very well and cooked properly the beef shank is one of the most yummilicious cuts that you can possibly purchase but don't tell anybody because it's still the cheapest purchase that you can make and if the meat industry finds out how yummilicious it is the price will go sky high.

    EDIT/ADDITION:
    I ordered a stainless steel inner vessel and received it today and I'm absolutely thrilled with it! I purchased it for $19.99 from Best Buy online and that is truly the very best price for a stainless steel vessel for the product. I searched ad nauseam for a stainless steel vessel that would fit the Farberware pressure cooker being reviewed here and I found out that it originally came with the stainless steel vessel. I suspect that when Walmart purchased the product that they reduced the cost by putting a non-stick vessel in instead of a stainless steel. I'm fine with that because the price of this pressure cooker was fabulous and to add the $19.99 stainless steel vessel still has me way ahead of the game when it comes to the instant pots! I had THREE InstantPot pressure cookers. ALL were their top of the line models... the fancy looking red one (crazily overpriced!); the 8-quart Duo Crisp; and a 3 qt miniature one. I'm just going to come right out and tell you the truth... I disliked every single one of them (the Duo Crisp I tried to work with about five times before I gave up). I wasn't even a little bit impressed by ANY of them but especially by the Duo Crisp. I still am baffled about their "air fryer" feature on the Duo Crisp. I just could not get the hang of it. Not only that, but the thing was so heavy and huge that it just wasn't even feasible to store any place in the kitchen let alone on a countertop! Once upon a time I did product testing which is why I had so many of them. Devoted followers of that brand seem to get really great results and I just couldn't. It's my personal opinion that the product is over marketed as they convince people that you can make cheesecakes and every other darn thing in them and I think that's really reaching. Just my experience with trying to make the air fryer feature work was a complete bust. I wouldn't dare waste the ingredients for a cheesecake! That's racking up some serious dollars! I took a stab at trying to fry and brown a cornish hen in it and the result was just not good at all.
    ON THIS GORGEOUS FARBERWARE PRESSURE COOKER ❤️...right now I have a beautiful beef shank cooking away in it and I am just thrilled with my decision to purchase this pressure cooker 👨‍🍳😁😋
    ORIGINAL POST:
    Why didn't you sear the chicken to create a fond and deglaze as the unit features sear mode? I bought this online, choosing it because it has the brown/sear feature on it.
    I was super disappointed to see a non-stick cooking vessel when I got the box just a few minutes ago 😥 I don't think it's even possible to make a fond in a non-stick vessel. You have to have the heat incredibly high and the elements that make a vessel non stick are highly toxic at high temperatures.
    I must be missing something here. I don't know about this cooking vessel. If it were graniteware or stainless steel it would make sense but a non-stick pressure cooker worries me as, again, cooking in non-stick it very high temperatures will emit toxins.
    I'm half thinking about boxing it back up and sending it back because I knew when I ordered it that there had to be some reason it was so ridiculously inexpensive. Maybe I've just figured out why.
    Thank you for the video! 🙂

      I'm looking forward to trying it. I'm so used to cooking with stainless steel I'm not quite sure what to do with this. I have a stainless steel inner pot on order and I would never use it with the pressure cooker feature for obvious reasons. But I'm so happy to have found something other than those ridiculous InstantPot pots. I say that they're ridiculous because they are grossly overpriced and the company added so many of them that it's almost impossible to make a decision on one.
      The old adage that "less is more" definitely applies to that particular brand as they are losing market share because people can't make a decision on which one to get.
      The decision to buy this one was very easy except that the description said that the inner pot was stainless steel. I really dislike non-stick cookware. It just doesn't sear well and starts peeling after a while. I make fond for almost everything. I've never been able to do that in a non-stick product and scraping the bits up off the bottom, even if I could, I'd be fearful would get little portions of whatever the coating is into the food. I'm sure I'll find it enjoyable for other means of cooking but not searing and making gravies, stews, and soups like I had hoped in one vessel.
      BTW, I turned off the sound on your video and watched it with the captions instead. I'm sound sensitive for some reason. I really enjoyed your video!

      @brad doyle
      I can't figure out how you'd even get to the point of deglazing! I bought this online, choosing it because it has the brown/sear feature on it. I made the natural assumption that the cooking vessel would be stainless steel because you cannot brown in non-stick and create anything TO deglaze (fond). While I've only been doing elevated cooking for a relatively short time of my life, I've never been able to create gravies or decent soups or stews without creating a fond by searing.
      I was super disappointed to see a non-stick cooking vessel when I got the box just a few minutes ago 😥
      I can't figure out why he didn't sear the chicken to create fond and deglaze it IF that feature actually works.

    I ordered a stainless steel inner pot to replace the non-stick one* for mine and I'm ABSOLUTELY THRILLED! I'm pretty sure that most of you will want to get one as well. I got mine from Best Buy online and it was $19.99. That is the very best price for it that you will find you will not be sorry as it will last for-absolutely-ever AND you will never have to fear any type of "strange elements" (like Teflon flakes) in your food or air.
    I just BEAUTIFULLY seared a beef shank and made a gorgeous flavorful fond and my new Farberware pot is very busy making a sumptuous meal for us! 😋
    I do not know how to cook with non-stick so you can just adapt the following to the non-stick vessel as you normally do.
    SUMPTUOUS BEEF SHANK WITH MUSHROOMS & ONIONS (you can use carrots, potatoes, celery, or whatever type of vegetables that you like)
    • Trim fat from shank (leave that bone marrow undisturbed as it is the best part!) and season it well by rubbing both sides with Diamond Brand kosher salt and Morton's Nature's Seasoning. Let sit for 30 minutes at room temperature;
    • Heat Stainless Steel vessel for several minutes until ONE drop of water dances in the pot. I mean dances in the pot... If it's sizzles or steams the pot is not hot enough. When the pot is hot enough the water drop will literally roll around and dance in stainless steel. If you are using the non-stick pot brown however you normally would. I apologize that I do not know how to do that in a non-stick vessel.
    • Pour tablespoon of oil in and wait until you see gentle wisps of smoke;
    • Brown shank well on both sides;
    • Remove shank to holding plate and scrape the glorious bits of fond that have been created and whisk a wee bit... about two or three tablespoons, of all purpose flour in making sure to brown the flour very well;
    • Deglaze with about 3/4 of a cup of whatever liquid you would prefer. I like to use a red wine with meat and a white wine with chicken but you can use a variety of different things as long as they are clear liquids. Try pineapple juice, orange juice, even a watered down V8 juice (V8 juice can splatter which is why I say "watered down") will make a beautiful gravy base. What you are doing in this step is making your gravy base, BTW;
    • Add your vegetables and place your shank on top of the vegetables;
    • Pour about a cup of beef broth or vegetable broth, whatever you'd prefer, over the shank slowly so that it rolls down into the vegetables carrying the seasoning down with it;
    • Close your lid (not really necessary if you watch it often and add more liquid accordingly) and choose slow cook. Cook on low for 6 to 8 hours if you leave the lid on and longer if you leave the lid off.
    • Remove the shank to a holding plate and stir in a couple of tablespoons of creme fraiche and a few dashes of soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce (per your palate).
    You are ready to serve your beautiful meal!
    You can serve it over rice or with potatoes or what I'm doing are homemade egg noodles.
    That beef shank is one of the tastiest cuts that you can possibly imagine if you cook it properly. It is critically important that you sear it very well at the onset though to maximize flavor and tenderness.
    You can change up the final step where I add the sour cream, soy sauce, and Worcestershire and instead remove the vegetables and meat and arrange nicely for serving and strain the remaining liquid as it is a beautiful flavorful and unbelievably nutritious bone broth! That is what I usually do but this particular evening I want to make a stroganoff type of meal for tomorrow so I'm using the sour cream and the noodles.
    * I researched the material that the non-stick vessel is made of and it is, in fact, Teflon. Teflon is a product that gives off fumes that are very hazardous to birds and small animals and I just do not like cooking with it so I ordered the stainless steel vessel and I absolutely adore it!
    Happy cooking in our fabulous Farberware Pressure Cooker 👩‍🍳

      @@klee9016 For 27$ I will find a SS insert bowl to place in the Teflon pot, or accept some more nano grams of toxins in my already overloaded system. Since the thing cant by design go over 250F Teflon is quite stable.

      It DOES go to 450°, Richard. That's how it sears things. By any chance did you get a different model that doesn't have sear?
      You don't need to put a SS insert into the Teflon one. It fits all by itself if you buy the correct size. It won't be as tight as the Teflon because it would not heat properly.
      I'm just delighted with the stainless steel insert! I even tried deep frying at 360° in it just to see if it would work. Just a small batch of beer battered shrimp in peanut oil. Came out great but I'd NOT recommend using it for deep frying as, IMO, too hard to control heat. I deep fry in stainless steel over gas. I was just trying to see just how versatile this awesome Farberware product really is.
      BTW, I got my insert from Best Buy for $19. Everyone else charges ridiculous prices for it.

    Pressure cookers scare me so much. I'm afraid to try them. I remember them seeming like the devil watching the steam release. It looked like the devil on my grandma's stove! Haven't even used one because of those memories. They scare me!

      The pressure inside a pressure cooker is about the same as a balloon that you inflate for birthday parties, etc. No big deal, and impossible for one to explode under such pressure, although the gasket can leak if not properly seated, but that just means it won't pressurize properly.
