Equipment Reviews: Multicookers

  • We selected 13 multicookers, priced from about $77 to about $250, including our previous winners. We included both 8-quart and 6-quart models because our multicooker recipes work equally well in both sizes. In each model, we pressure- and slow-cooked beef stew and Boston baked beans and made white rice.

    works great. i love that it has stainless steal pot inside ruclips.net/user/postUgkxG-7WiT7ocumjytOpHDFt632PL0pxXRAg and not the one with coating. we used to have a coated pot before, and the coating slowly peels, and i am sure went into the food that we cooked. Absolutely love stainless steel, and will not use a coated product again.This pot has many settings and many buttons, and i need to sit down with a manual to figure out which setting to use. I used the basic functions, and even though i am not technologically skilled, i turned it on and assembled it without any help.Very satisfied with this product overall.

    Product alert: The winning multicooker, the Instant Pot Duo Evo Plus, has been discontinued. ATK reviewed the replacement, the Instant Pot Pro, and rated it the new winner, although they noted that it didn't slow-cook large cuts of meat as well as the old one. Having an old-fashioned slow cooker is still the way to go for big pot roasts, it seems.

    I have had the 6 qt Crock Pot cooker for about 3 years. It’s been great and I’ve never thought I needed anything additional to its features. It has the nonstick liner and I was leary of that initially, but it has held up very well and is very easy to clean. You’re right about the unnecessary buttons for cooking various foods, but, as you suggest, I ignore them and set up the time and pressure myself, and it works flawlessly.

    One of the best kept secrets is the 3 qt. Instant Pot! While the perfect choice for cooking for one or two people, it can also serve as an auxiliary cooker for a larger family. Takes up far less space on the counter top, large enough for 8-9 "hard boiled" eggs or 4 good sized potatoes, makes a 1/2 gal of yogurt, etc. Would love to see a review of this size.

    • @jpaden8515
      @jpaden8515 3 года назад +3

      Right? It's great for those times you just need a small option or cooking something extra on the side. Only negative (but not really) was it didn't have sous vide, which would be nice on a smaller scale at times.

      @elizabethbaldwin8488 3 года назад +5

      Nah, you can always cook a little in a larger pot but not a lot in a little pot. 6 qt is the sweet spot. 8 qt for family of 6 or more.

    • @robfl07
      @robfl07 3 года назад +7

      I have the 3qt and love it for my small apartment kitchen. Initially bought it as a rice cooker, all the other features were a bonus. Not everyone needs a 6qt, and I think someone’s “sweet spot” depends on how many people are in their home (2 in my case) and how much countertop or storage space they have. I didn’t miss the sous vide function as I already had a Joule.

I've been tempted to purchase one of these pots, but I am retired and have nothing but time, so I can make things the old-fashioned way ... low and slow. I agree. It's so much better than the rest. I'm very happy with my Foodi but I used this model Instant Pot at a friend's house and it blew me away. My main complaint about the foodi, and one of the only ones I have, is it's impossible to take the pot out without damn near burning yourself if you need to transfer or drain anything.

    I have not been a fan of any of the electric pressure cookers that I've had in the past 10 years. I bought my Duo Evo Plus because of America's Test Kitchen right before Christmas. Even though I've owned two other instant pot brand multi cookers in the past and hated them both I decided to give this one a chance and wow do I love it. I only have the 6-quart model but it's easy to use and it has a much shorter learning curve. I never thought I would ever trade in my rice cooker which I use for both rice, soups, oatmeal's and hot cereals, and several dozens of hard-boiled eggs. I've done all of those things now in my instant pot Duo Evo Plus and for the first time I'm actually considering donating my rice cooker. I think my slow cookers are still safe but the rice cooker I'm not so sure. LOL

    Now I know what a "multi-cooker" is, and what an Instant Pot is. A slow cooker? I have one that is a crock pot brand, but it is an oval shaped thing with a heavy stoneware insert. I also have one that is round, with a heavy stoneware insert. These come with glass lids. Pressure Cooker? Yes, I have one of those - a wonderful Wolfgang Puck one, 8 quart with a non-stick insert cooking pot. I've had it 6 or 7 years now, and I use it all the time. It has only one timer knob on the front that sets the cooking time, and turns down until finished, then changes to the "keep warm" function. I haven't used it to cook rice, because I have a smaller rice cooker, which is digital - a mini pressure cooker just for rice. Thanks Lisa for your very thorough review of these. Next time I want baked beans, I'll use my pressure cooker. I haven't tried that yet. Do you have a recipe?

    I bought this top model a couple months ago. I do love it. Even agree with what she said about the 8 vs. 6 quart. I bought the 6 bcs I thought it's just cooking for me, I don't need any bigger. But sautéing in it is a bit of a drag, I resisted but contemplated dragging out a frying pan last time I made stew. But I use this at least once a week.

      @seikibrian8641 3 года назад

      "I resisted but contemplated dragging out a frying pan last time I made stew."
      That's what I would do if I had a multi-cooker. It's one more pan to clean, but I could get my cast iron skillet screaming hot for a fast, dark sear and then transfer the meat to the multi-cooker. I do that now with my Dutch oven cooking, because the larger surface and lower sides of the skillet make searing in one batch easier, and I don't mind cleaning a skillet, which takes only a few minutes.

    I don't know about the other brands but IP seems to bring out new, updated models almost continuously. Then the older models go on "sale" then on "close-out" then on clearance. Then somebody (probably an employee) gets the floor model for dirt-cheap. One thing I like is to pressure cook meat to almost done, then switch it to the bbq or convection oven to finish it off. Great report by the way.

    I purchased the 6 qt version of the winner on Amazon for $120 after seeing your IP vs. Slow cooker review a month ago. Something they didn't mention in this video is the fact that the inner pot has a heavy duty bottom which allows you to use it on the stove top. That's what makes it special and different from the basic IP models.I'm new to pressure cooking and so far it's awesome. Be sure to purchase a mesh basket because you'll use it a lot for veggies, hard boiled eggs, and potatoes. Oh, and as of this post, it's still on Amazon for $120. 😊

    HELP please! I have duo evo plus. Yogurt, even when custom set on 115°, didn,t get hotter than 90°. And all the heat was at the bottom. It ruined a gallon of expensive ingredients. Please show us how to make yogurt in this pot. Otherwise I think I'll return it and get it when they invent having heating element around the sides (like a crockpot does) that activates when you use Yogurt or Sous Vide.
    UPDATE: I returned it a week later. I'm making perfectly good yogurt with my oven and a towel. I can make everything else with what I already have in my kitchen.

    I bought an IP-LUX some years ago for $50. I've only used it a couple times as I don't cook stuff that needs pressure cooking that often and I can't spare the counter space. It did make quick work of Chicken Tika Marsala and Broccoli Beef (with chuck but cook the broccoli separate otherwise it's babyfood). I got this to replace a 20yo crockpot I never used and after seeing this review, I'm gonna have to do some temperature testing to verify my pot can cope.

    To the folks ATK, it would be most helpful if you edited this video to include the fact that the recommended model here has been discontinued. Fortunately, another subscriber posted a comment here with the necessary update on information, but it would still be nice to hear it from you.
    On a related note, I have two of your cookbooks which are centered around the multi cooker, and yet I find myself wanting much more. You have literally hundreds of recipes for the slow cooker across several cookbooks, so why can't a majority of those recipes be adapted for the multi cooker as well? And yes, I have looked on your website, and there doesn't appear to be much there. Perhaps I need to take a closer look at your cookbook collection and see if there are more books available for the multi-cooker. One thing I would like to learn from you is how to use the instant pot to make fluffy, perfectly cooked White rice. Every time I try to do it in the instant pot, it comes out gummy and clumpy, not separate and fluffy. Washing it helps a little prior to cooking, but not much.
    As far as slow cooking is concerned, I have reached the conclusion that there is no acceptable substitute for a regular, old fashioned slow cooker. So far, there is no Appliance on the market that completely replaces a slow cooker, while maintaining the same level of performance as the original.

    @America's Test Kitchen, Did Instant Pot change the recommended model out for a new model? What your video shows as the Evo model is strikingly similar to the new Instant Pot® Pro 8-quart Multi-Use Pressure Cooker. The control panel appears to be the same and the current Duo does not have the handles like your Evo. I cannot find the Evo model even listed on their website anywhere. I will soon be in the market for another pressure cooker/multi cooker. I got rid of my Cuisinart pressure cooker when I moved overseas. Now that I am coming back, I will need to re-equip my kitchen.
