- The Marine Corps crucible is a 54-hour event that tests physical stamina, mental toughness, and the ability to think critically while under extreme stress.
Broken down into squads, the recruit training platoon will face many obstacles that require not just physical strength, but teamwork, all while dealing with hunger, sleep deprivation, and physical exhaustion.
Every event during the crucible ties back to a Marine whose dedication to duty went above and beyond like Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone, or Corporal Jason Dunham, both of whom gave their lives in selfless service to their country and fellow Marines.
Introduced by General Charles Krulak in 1996, the Crucible was designed to orient recruit training around realistic combat scenarios. The Crucible has evolved during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars to include immediate action drills and simulated casualties, and also to recite more recent heroism of modern Marines. It begins with a 0200 wake-up and a six-mile hike to your bivouac site. You'll be wearing Flak Jacket carrying your rifle and on your back will be a 40-pound pack with everything you need for sustainment during the 54-hour event. The Crucible creates a condition of physical, mental, and moral adversity to truly test whether your training has been effective. During the Crucible, Marine Corps recruits will face sleep deprivation, limited food, physical exhaustion, over 48 miles of hiking, eight physically and mentally demanding events and they'll have to deal with simulated casualty evacuations throughout each event. What happens during the crucible is no big secret, but it will take a lot more than the knowledge of the events to make it through. It will take grit, determination and a never quit attitude.
The final event of the crucible is always a Night March nine grueling miles with a full-pack, rifle, and Kevlar helmet. If you're lucky enough to be on the west coast this culminates in a hike up at the Reaper, a 700-foot elevation hill that is surprisingly difficult. At the top of the Reaper, recruits receive their Eagle globe and anchor and are finally called Marines. At Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, this event happens at the Iwo Jima memorial.
After receiving your EGA you'll march to the chow hall and eat your first Warrior's breakfast, you'll be given the option to eat steak and eggs. There'll be French toast, cupcakes, ice cream, and any other foods you want. There will most likely be one recruit gorgeous too much on ice cream it gets sick to their stomach. Just remember you haven't been eating junk food for three months so your stomach might reject it.
After the Warriors' breakfast, you'll be allowed time to shower take care of your feet and relax for the day. You'll get a good night's rest, but as always Firewatch must be posted. Then you'll spend your first week as a United States Marine and drill instructors will begin calling you by your rank and last name.

@@richardkelley1557how was basic training for you?
Best wishes to your son.
My step daughter goes into the Crucible tonight. I'm proud of her, she's strong, she's smart and she's fierce. She surprised her mom and I with her decision to join the Marine Corps. It's what I wanted to do but was unable to foe reasons that were unexpected. This young woman left home nearly three months ago and not a day has passed where she was the main thing on my mind. I'm blessed she's in my life and the Corps is lucky to have her. She's my hero. I'm lighting our candle in 2 hours and it'll burn to help guide her back. Two more weeks and I'll get to shake her hand and cry tears of pride. Thank you all of you who've served this country and protected us all who call it home.
Update?
@@Dinogoesrawr123 graduated Friday, she's home on leave now. Sharing her experiences with her mom and I. Proud of her is an understatement.
@@andrewbranson5590 that’s awesome! Definitely an accomplishment she’ll remember. 🇺🇸💪
Proud to have her as my sister!
That’s awesome!
My son has 5 weeks left, praying for him to not get hurt. Very proud mom
I would be balling like a baby watching my son do this. So proud of him. He's in his second week of bootcamp.
BAWLING like a baby. save your new Marine a bunch of grief. in make no big purchases until he finishes his specialty school. Remind him the only thing on his radar is doing well in his school. He isn't there to find a girl, buy a cell phone or laptop, NONE of that. the locals around him are circling like sharks to take advantage of new Marines loaded with $ and nothing close to wise spending habits. a clock radio and wristwatch are fine. Maybe a good set of running shoes is about it.
My son just finished the crucible this week, proud of him even with a stress fracture he never give up
Echo Company 2nd battalion
OOHRAH
I was from that same co. and battalion last july Them Di's dont play let me tell u man.
My son is in week 1 of crucible. I've been praying and sending prayers to him asking the good Lord to provide him good health, wisdom and strength to get through the grueling training. I'm confident he'll be able to get through it. 🙏🏽📖🏥💪🏽⚓️💜
My granddaughter starts this in exactly 10 minutes. My candle is in the window and my prayers are with you Vanessa. I love you and am so very proud of you.
My fiancé is doing the crucible this Thursday I just got his last letter for the week and he says him and all his platoon are ready to take it on. #3058!! Blessings to everyone
I was platoon 3062 mike company he graduated on sep 8th ?
God bless the United States Marine Corp! My son is in his second week of boot camp and watching this brings tears to my eyes. So incredibly proud.
Mine as well! 2 weeks now Can’t wait till he can write
My son is doing the crucible as I type this Prayed and cried to God to give him strength and guidance that he will make it cus he never gave up. God bless the USMC
Same here. Mine is at Paris Island.
I haven't left for boot yet I will be the first in my family to receive that eagle. I will hold myself to a higher standard physical, mental and emotional. I will achieve greatness. I will not stop.
My son is in PI right now and is two weeks until the Crucible. We have an awesome group of prayer warriors who have taken up the challenge to keep November Co in prayer the entire 54 hours. Can’t wait to hug my marine next month!
He made it?
He made it!
I can't tell you how much the Crucible makes you think, and reflect on everything you were physically trained to do
I remember waking up at 0200, shivering, freezing, wondering why this had to happen, having our kits on didn't make it better, i then put on my black leather gloves but i was screamed at to take them off, so i stuck with the program until the son rose, waiting for that warmth
It wasn't until we recieved our first story telling of a marine who died during combat, giving everything he had to defend his country
That's when i reallized everybody else is fighting for the same purpose, so i shoved my weaknesses to the ground and suffered with everyone else, even helping those in need, thus how we ALL earned the title, Marine
My hands were so cold and wind chapped at one point, i couldnt open my MRE in the few minutes we were permitted to eat one day. I tried so hard as my dry knuckles cracked and bled. And then it was time to hit the road again. I was pissed. A boy learned to man up and be a Marine that day
Our son graduated from Boot Camp Bravo Company in October 14th of last year and he said it was very challenging but it takes lots of dedication and courage to complete. SO So proud of our Marine.
The Crucible was motivating. You already came that far and it’s worth the sleep deprivation and pain to get that EGA.
7 weeks left of boot camp for my son jeani I love and think of my son everyday can't wait to see him again I miss him dearly 🙏🏽
My son is in his first day of the crucible at camp Pendleton today
How did it go?
He said it was rough but he made it. He graduated on April 21st. He was home for a month assisting his recruiter. He just went back last Monday for combat training for a month I think before he goes to Missouri for his MOS
God protect our kids, mine is in his 1st week praying for them 🙏🏽
I went through the entire Crucible with a pelvic stress fracture. And i was one of the only Marines in my platoon that didn't puke after the Warrior's Breakfast lol
Well done!
That puke was delicious though!
My son left last week to bootcamp in San Diego and I think and pray for his every day and night. I'm so proud of him and cannot wait to call my son a Marine.
Did he make it?
My son starts the crucible tomorrow at 02:00, praying 🙏 for his strength.
Amen my son also
My son is 6 weeks away from this. Hoorah
Those log drills are no joke
Great video! Semper Fidelis!
My son is about to shut his eyes for the final time as a recruit…Go Papa Co!!
All it makes you do is realize you have another gear to tap into that you never realized. During a marathon run, it's like being exhaused at mile 20 but realizing your will and drive will outlast the slight pain. A little bit of pain for a lifetime of pride. oorah my Marine Corp Nov 1983. 3089, San Diego.
Damn that shit was hard
Remember, this is just a phase in boot camp. The real fun begins when you get to your unit, especially of you are a grunt. Running up and down mountains with telephone poles, 5 to 8 mile runs, 25 to 30 mile marches with a pack will become routine and that is just the basics. Of course that was decades ago for me, but I guess it is still the same.
I’ll never forget. I’ll also never forget my platoon. First battalion 1016. Once I became a Marine I felt it. Nobody will understand the feeling unless they’ve gone through it themselves.
It’s a TEAM ALWAYS a TEAM,Semper Fi
Semper fi 🎉❤
1998 Echo Company Platoon 2075 and I still remember the sprint up The Reaper.
I was looking for.my.son in this video. This is where he was a year ago.. he is hero im so proud of him
Piece of cake!!!!
Man this was 6 years ago and I still remember every moment of the Crucible. Fuck Basilone's hill man lmao.
I remember the Reaper! 2011 Lima Company
Memories
My son finished his crucible Wednesday. I could not be more proud. May God bless our armed forces for defending our country annd its people. Serving in the military was a dream I never realized. I praise God for giving me a son who I can support while he realizes his dream of serving his country.
I remember going through it back in 2001. It's not easy, but if you just keep pushing forward, you'll make it and earn your EGA. Semepr Fi. Stay Salty.
I was in Fox Co Plt 2040 ( the 2nd Co to ever go thru) Crucible Test Rats "96"
At least they showed MCRD San Diego where we do the Reaper and Real Marines are made!
Means stress like starvation and sleep exhaustion! Special forces like training. With out picking up rank pick up and go! At 160 lbs you carry about 110 lbs for 56 miles in 48 hours or so. At least in the 20th century.
Last Letter on tha7th of October LORD I PRAY TO U TO GIVE HIM THA STRENGTH....#PAPA CO2088🙏❤💪
That hike AFTER you get your EGA sucked so much.
Was fun would do again
In my state we worship our college football players. I wonder how many of those "athletes" could handle the crucible.
probably a lot as my cousin is now a marine and was a varsity player last year
My son is about to head out to camp pendleton kilo company 3221!
"That 40lb pack back injury isn't service related "
Look at the bright side, you get to do crucible plenty of more times once out in the fleet😂 (if you are infantry). Buddy of mine went straight into the scout sniper unit from SOI. Plenty of more fun training to come.
Hold down the fort Devil Dogs!!!! Fall down 7 times and get up 8!
Crucible was a pain in the ass, wasn't a fan of climbing mountains haha. Super fun, despite not really sleeping or eating though.
My boy is there at this moment.
How did they do?
I went through the crucible in 1967 and it was the same then as it was back then! So it wasn't started in 1996! I remember that event real well!
The crucible started in 96. 🤔
@MrCyp200la I don't know where you received yout information but we had that 54 hout when I went through Parris Island in 1967! I'm 74 years old now and you never forget your training!
quite clean uniforms after that id say
I wish I could do all over again ♥️🤞🏾
Still a Chinese Devil after this. I must be some kind of monster. 😂
Today is my boyfriend's second day in the crucible
Did he talk about it after?? How did it go??
How did it go?
My only regret in life is never having been a US Marine.
94-98 san Diego marine here was in middle of enlistment when crucible was introduced. 😂 Dont remember no good food like that. But remember grim reaper, ole smokie, and mount mother fucker.
It's just physically challenging. I remember not learning jack about the medical part despite it being one of the most important aspects.
I got my EGA on the parade deck at Pendleton. NOT on top of the Reaper.
It’s meant to suck embrace the suck, love the suck!! Semper FI further Devils!!! Delta Company Platoon 1101 2005 MCRD San Diego!!
Embrace the suck... Love the suck...
The crucible is only valid in pendleton!
BS, it counts everywhere.
40 pounds? Wow. Not like we had 100 pounds
foreal though
First day for my nephew 😢
He made it?
An introduction to active duty with an infantry unit. This isn't the hard part. The hard part is getting your blood stripes.
Semper Fi 69-72
My son starts this in 5 days.
How did it go?
👏👏👏🇺🇸
My daughter leaves for Crucible today. Just got my phone call.
How did it go?
Til this day, I rarely eat junk food😂😂😂 04
Ration those MREs gents 😂😂😂
It’s just two days tho.
This is only a warm-up. Because everybody bound for the grunts will be spending so much time out in the weeds that them and those stupid mosquitos might just as well hold hands!
Lol more like a 100 pound pack, 3 hrs of total sleep, barely any food.
What do the women do?
40lb pack my ass 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Do they require different for girls?? My daughter is so small. 5’3” and 120…..she doesn’t do this until end July but dang….idk! She is super strong and can do 13 pull ups but not sure she has that stamina!!
@@maryarnez3730 She'll be ok. She'll get stronger and build stamina over the course of 8 weeks. By the time the crucible comes, She'll be ready for it and those 3 days will fly by.
@@maryarnez3730 It's in the mind whether she can do it or not. If you believe you can, you can, doubt yourself and most likely you will fail. Thirteen pull ups is more that most female Marine recruits are capable of so I'd say she will be OK! Semper Fi and OOHRAH to your daughter. I earned the title over fifty years ago and damn proud to still call myself a Marine. Once a Marine, Always a Marine. Never forget that.
40 pound pack my ass
team here kid napping bank fsu case 700 airport druge bust plead gealty set un nato jazz meada 12 years old un like make airport .
