Fond childhood memory: Neighbor was a famous bass player and about once a year the Doobies would come jam in his backyard which was across a field from our house. Free concert!
There was a time I thought I would never turn the radio on and not hear these guys lighting it up. Everyone new their music.
Wowser!
Lucky 🍀.
Omgosh! That is so cool :)
@@robertbeckler5058 So true.
The Doobies are currently on their 50th anniversary tour.
💫Michael McDonald is incredible w the band and as a solo artist. He took the band through a soul/R&B path. I loved both versions of the band. 💫
Just saw Them in St.Louis, Mo a few months ago. Got me an Awesome 50th Tee'Shirt and Great Memories of The Past !!
Asia & BJ, you will love their "Jesus Is Just Alright"(banger) and "Black Water"(softer) !!!
Two of their absolute best! 👍
Yes to both of these!
Definitely
Jesus is actually from The Byrds
Remember this is from a generation of musicians where there was no auto-tune, no computers. You had to work in the studio until you got it right to the point where if somebody heard it live they couldn't tell the difference from the recording. Musicianship at its finest and we need to start going back to that
Man these guys were such a dominant musical force during the 70s. They had a string of great hits.
“Why you in such a hurry, to be lonely one more night?” Vocals, mastery in lyrical content & unmatched keyboard & percussion. Sooo good
Whiskey voice. Smooth whiskey. And a wonderful arrangement, great instrumentals and beautiful harmonies. Great song, with a sadness to it - we all run from something at some point in our lives. And we all need encouragement to let that go and find someone to trust.
That instrument is a Clavinet, it's a piano-like keyboard that has a froggy kind of sound, and it can be heard on all kinds of rock and R&B records from the late '60s to the early '80s
Especially the weight with the band
Are you sure it wasn't a Rhodes piano?
@@deedeehaugen4373 Yes, there is also a Fender Rhodes on this track.
That was worth just watching Asia groove to this beat. Smiled the entire way.
SO glad you reacted to this song; it’s one of my favorite Doobie songs!!! It’s a real groove! So much fun to see you both enjoy it, and you are right; there’s something almost quirky about the song that’s hard to describe 😊
ANYTHING DOOBIE BROTHERS💜💞💜 Love all their songs... the memories are tooooo good!! FAMILY FEELS🥰
Summertime at the park or beach ... always started with the Doobie Brothers.
@@corawheeler9355 such a good feeling right!?
It doesn’t matter which decade, which singer, you can’t go wrong with the Doobie Brothers. Asia and BJ I just love y’all btw!!!
Just saw the Doobies last week and they played this song and it sounded awesome they still got it the whole show was great its a must see! Thanks for the reaction!
Michael McDonald has such a smooth blue eyed soul voice that's like no other....he was a great match with the Doobie Brothers but went on to do solo work which was amazing🔥🔥
Agreed. But I have to throw Steve Winwood onto the blue-eyed-soul greatest list too.
It's always good to do Doobie's. Gives you that high and keeps you runnin'.
You hit it, when you said you can pick his voice out of a haystack! ✌️❤️😆
Early Doobie Brothers, “Listen to the Music”, “Long Train Runnin”, “China Grove”, “Black Water”, “Jesus is Just Alright With Me”, ”Rockin’ Down The Highway”, “Take Me In Your Arms”, “South City Midnight Lady” and more.
They've done 'Long Train Runnin', 'Listen to the Music', 'China Grove'.
The vocal mastery of Micheal Mc Donald...unmistakable!!🎶💙🎵
Wife here..Love Love Love this song!!..Takes me back to the innocence of childhood..This song was EVERYWHERE in the 80's..Micheal Mcdonald "So Smooth" Well said Ms. ASIA...!!!..BJ .., What a beautiful point.."Our hearts keep us running
Saw them a couple of weeks ago. They were amazing. 24 songs without breaking a sweat.
Doobie Brothers were my first concert back in 1973! Tons of great songs from both versions of the band 🔥🎶🔥
First concert ever for me - Thin Lizzy opened for them. 9/27/78...@ Ohio University
Saw them in Tampa back in the early 80's, and they jammed to this for about 15 minutes.......had the place ROCKING LoL!!
Thank you for reacting to “It Keeps You Running” one of their best, from the 80’s. ❤❤
Definitely
If you haven't heard it yet, Michael and James Ingram, "ya mo be there" 👍 check it out. BJ might also want to have a voice like James Ingram - good example is "100 ways" 😊💞 the sound is Michael McDonald on the keyboard. He's magical
This is pure fire 80s music. Back then, when we went out, we got dressed up and danced...all night long. No fights, guns, or violence. The music was from and for the "heart".' Very fine reaction.
Smooth, sexy voice, and gorgeous too. So glad he joined the band. He gave them a second life after Tom Johnston left.
it ain't guitar, it ain't bass, it ain't strings, it ain't horns... gotta be the keyboards... right? ...and btw, McDonald's voice changed the Doobies like Curry changed the Warriors.... good reaction guys...thumbs up!
Get it, Asia… I see you feelin funky, girl. We all feel it too… 😉☮️💟
So much atmosphere and confidence with this song.
Once again Michael McDonald hits everytime. One my favorites by Michael and The Doobie Brothers.🥰🎶🎶❤❤.
Asia and BJ you are still making this 71 year old feel like that 18 year old from1969. I want to thank you guys for bringing me so much pleasure and so many wonderful memories. Now I'm going to bring some to you. I want to highly recommend RICK JAMES AND TEENA MARIE ( FIRE AND DESIRE ). This is an awesome song. Enjoy, peace
The interesting thing about this song -- which is another gem from the Doobie Brothers hitmaking in the late 1970's, a new one every four months -- is that Michael is singing lyrics which are about half speed compared to the music bumping-along tempo. It's sort of hypnotic in that the blend works! It draws listeners in and gets their shoulders and hips bumping.
The Doobies just plain groove.
Thank you for all the great bands that you cover❤️ All the cool people listened to the Doobie Bros. and Michael McDonald🎶👍
My favourite Doobie Brothers songs are:
•What a Fool Believes
•Long Train Runnin'
•Black Water
•Takin' It to the Streets
•You Belong to Me
•Here to Love You
•Minute by Minute
The first time I saw The Doobies in concert, it was a benefit for Stanford Children’s Hospital. They were all there. I went with my dad and a roommate from college.
I did not immediatley take to the MM incarnation of the Doobies, but it did grow on me.
Takin it to the Streets is one of the best DB song's ever! Big social justice vibes. I love it! Michael McDonald played Taking It To The Streets at the Democratic Nat. Convention closing night in 2008 in Denver ( I was there!!) when Obama won the nomination the first time. Omg, it was magical!
In the film Forrest Gump when he is running across the country, if you listen closely this song plays in the background.
So much soul in this song.
Mikey Mac-one of the most unique voices ever-one note and you know who it is
The Doobie Brothers were great!
I can hear a lot of Funky Meters and The Neville Brothers in their music.
The Doobies spent a lot of time in New Orleans back in the 70s.
They even named one of their albums "Toulouse Street" after a famous Street in the French Quarter.
I’ve always loved this song- it’s such a vibe! You just have to turn it up and sing along!
Yes Asia, it was the keyboards...LOL!!!
Hilarious when BJ caught out of the corner of his eye Asia swaying with the music. You two are priceless! Love you. MM is a national treasure! When he combines with Kenny Loggins, it is OFF THE CHARTS! But the Doobie Brothers were a VERY important part of my growing up. So underrated!
"What a Fool Believes" has a great vocal by Michael
There’s great live video of them doing this in concert and on TV.
One of many great songs from a group that helped define an era. FYI, their out touring now. 🤘😎
That keyboard was a Hohner D6 Clavinet which can sound like a funky harpsichord. Stevie Wonder also used this instrument extensively.
This is my favorite song by the Doobie Brothers-they did this live too-quite a group.
The Michael McDonald sound the Doobie Brothers incorporated in 1976 that changed the whole dynamics of the group from a Rock and Roll feel to a Pop sound throughput the rest of the 70s and into the early 80s.
Michael McDonald is a music genius... every song he touches... he makes gold. I ADORE HIS MUSIC.. I have several of his albums... thanks for sharing.. good to hear this again.. glad ya'll liked it too...
Next to the Beatles,,and the Muppet band.
I think the Doobie bros, are the group with the best characters in the group.
And Michael wasn't even there when I started loving them.
Mike is definitely great.
But my favorite Doobie is skunk Baxter.
He was also in steely Dan.
But I loved seeing him in the Doobies.
~Asia & BJ~
My in-laws used to go to garage jam sessions of "KC & The Sunshjne Band" before they got famous! Fond Memories!!!
I had to look up what Asia was asking about the "sound". They used keyboards, guitar, bass, drums, percussion instruments and congas on this song.
Very cool and funky bass line by Tiran Porter. He added so much to the Doobies sound over the years.
Im so glad someone finally reviewed this song. One of my favs
He's grooving during the song but she is jamming. Great reactions to this beautiful song.
I believe Carly Simon recorded "It Keeps You Runnin" first and had her own hit with this song and then the Doobie Brothers did their own version with the song and had a hit as well. If you haven't explored Carly Simon yet, you should: "Haven't got Time for the Pain", "You're so Vain", "That's the Way I've always heard it should be", "Anticipation". Of course the Doobies have hits that weren't even radio hits, just great musicians with Tom Johnston and Michael McDonald in various eras of the Doobies.
Thx y’all! It sounds like a Fender/Rhodes electric piano! When you hit the keys hard they make a “doink” sound!
Love the Doobie Brothers. One of my fav songs ❤️❤️ Michael McDonald has a beautiful soulful voice !!! Love the Harmonies !! Takin it to the streets, China Grove, Sweet Freedom just a few songs to name !! A huge catalogue to check out!!
Michael McDonald has such a unique, soulful voice. He wasn't the original lead singer for the Doobies. He took over after Tom Johnston left the band.
Asia & BJ, I highly recommend reacting to more of their songs such as "China Grove", "Rockin Down The Highway", "Listen To The Music", "Long Train Running", etc.
"Real Love" is another good one.
Watching this video, I was like, "Aha! I see your heads nodding in time with the music there!"
Mine too, mine too.
I LOVE the bass part in this song. The Doobies were always looking for new sounds and they happened to throw a phase shifter pedal on the bass, and came up with this REALLY fat sound that just blended so well!!😄🔥👍
Tiran Porter!
Doobie Brothers had great music especially their early albums
When you guys get a chance, watch one of the older live performances of this song. They’re just 🔥
I think this song has blues and soul voices against a funk beat ...Very creative...
That sound that has you puzzled was a Farfiza Synthesiser
Remember kids, at this point in time we used the oddest things to create a certain sound. As in the foil cover inside a pack of smokes or a chewing gum over a hair comb. Even the use of old wash boards and guitar pics
This song is a gospel. Pure and simple.
The Doobies just rock both styles are great .
Love this song, really love your guys' reactions. Seeing you react so enthusiastically to Michael McDonald and this song makes us all appreciate it again ourselves
You should watch their live performances. You will really see & hear the talent of Michael McDonald on full display. "Takin it to the streets live, 1977. You won't be sorry ;-)
Hi Asia & BJ, My friend Joe is their Guitar Tech and I liked them for years, so many songs
That's the Wurlitzer Electric Piano used in a number of recording at the time. Seems like they just can't replicate that "Wurly" sound with digital software. It was a piano with reeds. They are sought after these days. Thanks for sharing!
The Doobie Brothers are an American rock band that have been around for 5 decades. They covered many genres of music over the years. They had so many great songs such as "Listen To The Music", "Jesus Is Just Alright", "China Grove", "Black Water", "Takin' It To The Streets", "The Doctor", "Echoes Of Love", "You Belong To Me", "Take Me In Your Arms" etc.
This one is on my personal Top Five list of "Soft Rock" songs. That I really enjoy. A fairly successful hit that I honestly don't know the reason why it never did become one of those MEGA-hits.
This is the stuff I heard in the car on the way to school in 1978. I'm a lucky man.
The Doobie Brothers had a string of hits before Michael McDonald joined the band. It says alot about them to bring his voice to center and create these amazing newer sounds.
Good tune that gets overlooked by a lot of reactors.
Sophisticated Simplicity
This is one of my most favorite songs ☮️
That funky sound is an electric organ.
My first beer listening to this song at 13 years old. Interesting it kept me running
KEYBOARDS HAVE ALL KINDS OF DIFFERENT MODES AND SOUNDS,,,,IN THE 70S IT BECAME VERY EXPERIMENTAL!!
Asia working on her Steely Dan/ Doobies playlist for the late night party vibe…
Excellant songggggg
"Echoes of love" Same album....bigger hit. Also, Carley Simon and the Doobies kinda "traded" songs with THIS ONE and "You belong to me" Check them BOTH out!
To me, the oddest pairing was when Warner Bros. Records music producer Ted Templeman got Michael McDonald to co-write a song with David Lee Roth. The result was I'll Wait, the second single from the album 1984 by the mighty Van Halen. React to that song, you would never think those two would create such a monster hit in the 80s.
One of their best, what a groove. Great syncopation, a mix of a drum machine and live drums. Only problem is it's too short!
One of my favorites is South City Midnight Lady by The Doobie Brothers.
Saw Doobies in 1975 Long Beach Arena tickets 8.50 .They had played up and down the Calif. coast for a few years so not many people showed at our concert so the manager came out on stage and told all of us to move into the center rows front to back.. What a fun party gig that was. They were amazing! If you get a chance to see them on their present 50th Anniversary Tour, get there!! Peace. Rory in Indiana
Going to see them in October here in Nashville. Can't wait!!!
This track was never put on their first Greatest Hits album. I always wondered why
McDonald's voice has a lot of emotion in it but it's pleasing to the ears at same time.
Asia keyboard and organ. That’s his style. Go pull songs off Steely Dans AJA album and you will hear it. Same with Kenny Loggins Toto and Christopher Cross. You will hear Michael’s keyboard playing and background vocals. I used to use him and the doobies to work out to in the 70’s and 80’s. It really gave me peace of mind! 😎🔥💯
React to "Real Love" Doobie Brothers !! Everyone is sleeping on it !!
What a great song. I haven’t heard this in awhile
but it’s one of my favorite from this amazing band.
A feature song from the movie "FM" that had its own spin off in WKRP in Cincinnati
"I Cheat The Hangman" - My favorite song by them.
