In the 1970s Michael McDonald was EVERYWHERE. You couldn’t turn on the radio without hearing him singing back up on numerous hits, including many with Steely Dan.
Hey, I haven’t heard this song I’m decades. Yes the Doobie brothers are marvelous. The synthesizer gives that funky bottom sound. I also can’t believe this was released in 1976. Sounds more like the 80s.
One of my FAVORITE Michael McDonald songs, I just Love it .. When he OPENS UP with "From here I can feel your heartbeat " SWOON..Thanks Harri ❤🎉🎉🎉 I've sung it countless times 😊 2:03
Ah, I love "It Keeps You Runnin'." Probably my favorite Doobie Bros song. "Why you in such a hurry to be lonely one more night?" I'll listen more than once.
My favorite Doobie Brothers song. For me - it's Michael McDonald's best vocal... and the keyboards are so funky - it's funkylicious. And some nice lyrics as well... "Are you gonna worry... for the rest of your life? Hey, yeah... Why you in such a hurry... to be lonely one more night? Hey, yeah... Well, I know what it means to hide your heart... from a long time ago... Oh, darling... It keeps you runnin'." LOVE this song! One of my all time favorites.
Great song. Smooth, sexy vocals by Michael McDonald. The Doobie Brothers’ music underpins many wonderful memories of my youth. Great fun in concert, too! Thanks for your reaction.
This is my number one favorite song of all time. Michael McDonald has the greatest voice ever. And the Doobies are my favorite band. Thank you for the super review. Please listen to Michaels song Cry Like A Rainy Day , it is from his solo career you will not be disappointed I promise.
The story goes that Michael McDonald was having problems writing the lyrics to the melody of what would become "You Belong to Me." Ted Templeman, who produced all the big acts on Warner Bros. Records (like Carly, The Doobies, and Van Morrison, etc.), suggested Michael call Carly to enlist her help. She did and the song appeared on both their forthcoming albums. Carly's release of it was a big hit. So it was no surprise when she decided to record another McDonald song, "It Keeps You Runnin'." This time, however, The Doobies had the bigger hit and the rest is history, as they say. Thanks 'Drummin & Harri.
A good backline of how "You Belong To Me" developed. I played Carly's version a lot as well. The same happened with Kenny Loggins' input to What A Fool Believes. Michael had it most of the way but Loggins put the finishing touches on it. Magical times. Thanks John!!
I like McDonald and the McDonald version of the Doobies, but some just could not stand the change to their sound. McDonald has an unbelievable voice - so soulful. Tom Johnston is great, too.
From the 1976 album, " Taking It To The Street", The Doobie's 6th album. Written by Michael McDonald, it's wonderful catchy melody and captivating lyrics incorporate a more soulful and jazzy R&B taste. Michael's powerful, so renowned enticing vocals, blending with the beautiful harmonies make for a delightful tune. The gospel based keyboarding and such sweet instrumentation made for another winner for The Doobies. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Imadrummin.👏👏 Cheers from Canada. 🇨🇦
Imadrummin keeps the views and likes comin' Harri's way with top tier selections like this gem from the Doobies! I wouldn't expect anything less from you, brother! McDonald was with the Doobie in early '75, Harri -- I saw them in concert with him in February of '75. Great selection, song and reaction! Thank you, fellas!
The new era of Michael McDonald began at this time. 1974/75 to fill in for the ailing Tommy Johnston. I read somewhere the percussion layer was probably the Ace Tone Rhythm Producer FR-15 made in 1975. Same time frame as this song. The Doobie Brothers had two drummers which was appealing and worked so well together. John Hartman, Michael Hossack and later Keith Knudsen and Chet McCraken. Bobby LaKind on percussion. Thanks for the reaction Harri.
Fantastic choice from Imadrummin! These guys are so great and sort of under appreciated. Harri’s expression was priceless. Such a great song. Thanks Harri and Imadrummin 🌺✌️
This was probably my first "favourite song" not influenced by siblings, parents or peers. Just straight from the radio. The melancholy pre-chorus, (I know what means to hide your heart etc...) is still one of my favourite pieces of music. Thanks for the reaction.
Back to listen to it with you again! These guys really live up to it. Every time I listen to this i love it more. And I'll listen more than once! It IS a gorgeous song. Isn't it funny how some bands can use a techy sound and sound fake? And then The Doobies can use it, and it sounds so right??? How do you keep from singing, lol!! Out of great appreciation, Harri, had to drop a dime this time. You've got a great ear, and i just love your vibe.
If you have a chance, watch the live version of this from a special in 1977 . You’ll see Michael playing the synthesizer keyboards making those funky sounds. No drum machine. 😁
Michael's voice was also made for Motown! His cover of "Heard it Through the Grapevine" is my absolute favorite. I know you liked CCCR's cover. Now listen to Michaels and you will NOT be disappointed.
There’s great live video of this without all the double tracking and over production. I hope you’ll get to see it- it sounds so much better and you get to see Mike! ❤❤❤❤❤
From my figuring this is the best Michael McDonald doobies song, cheat the hangman is the best Patrick Simmons song, and long train runnin is the best Tom Johnston song. And all their 2nd 3rd and 4th best songs are all smashing hits too…what a legacy…
Yeah, this was their first album with Michael McDonald in the band. I remember hating it when it came out, because their sound was so much different than their previous albums. Michael McDonald ia a great talent in his own right, but I don't care for the way he changed the band from what they originally were.
Such a heartbreaking 💔 moment, and beautiful reunion 🫂 for a mother and her child!! I wish them all the best that life can bring!! In Jesus Christ's mighty name, Amen 🙏 🙌
If you have never heard Tower of Power, I would love to see your reaction to hearing them for the first time. I suggest starting with Soul Vaccination or You're Still A Young Man. I will be listening. ✌

:D Lucky US eh? I may be *old* but music like this keeps *me* runnin'....

LOVE this song! One of my all time favorites.
❤👍🌟
My brother runs with Michael. His kids and Michael’s even went to school together. Nice common every man. Great singer
Doobies had two excellent drummers, no machines with that band. The TV version with Skunk Baxter solo jam is a classic
No machines.....just great drummers!
First Doobie Brothers album with Michael McDonald. Great, great song. Glad you're reacting to it.
Such a funky groovy hooky beat. Nobody could have sung this but Michael McD.
Great song. Smooth, sexy vocals by Michael McDonald. The Doobie Brothers’ music underpins many wonderful memories of my youth. Great fun in concert, too! Thanks for your reaction.

Love the bass part on this one.

Yeah, the Doobies are great. They rode the pop and R&B charts for years.

My 1st concert was the Doobies in 1976 for $6. Times have changed but not the memories. McDonald's voice is a jewel like you Sir Harri.

Will do my brother. Always a pleasure Neal. ✌
🇨🇦 So many of Michaels songs mix Soul with R&B and with Jazz ! It is the heart of his sound ! 🇨🇦
I know what it's like to hide your heart, from a long time ago...has spoken to me for so many years.
Great song
Great reaction, Harri, and great song choice, Imadrummin! Awesome, soulful tune and musicianship!
Thank you Marcus. Good memories. 👍
Oh wow.... this brings back so many amazing memories!! (My High school days.)
I haven't heard this fantastic tune in many years.
Thanks from across the pond, I'm in the great state of Texas.
Recommended by your friend up the road in Tennessee. Texas is a cool state Mr. Wilson. 👍

Love Doobie Brothers , seen them in San Antonio in the the early 90’s , they were excellent! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Harri and imadrumming, great song, looking forward to the others.
My favorite by them
When I was in college, we used to joke that this song referred to our dorm food 🤣
Back to listen to it with you again!
These guys really live up to it. Every time I listen to this i love it more. And I'll listen more than once! It IS a gorgeous song.

Doobie’s are one of the best!
Thanks!
Another great pick from Imadrummin and thanks Harri. This takes me right back to senior year of High School.
Much appreciated Anne. More Doobies on the way. ✌
One of my all time favorite Doobie Bros songs. Great choice!!!

Harri, got your songs... great goice, reminds me of this song and others. Keep up the dream!

Music we loved and grew up on. My pleasure. 👍

You are fabulous

Takin it to the Streets a big Doobies hit with Macdonald
He also did some songs with Toto

Me neither!
This was in the movie, Forest Gump.
I read several years ago about a vocal coach who wanted to get her hands on Michael McDonald’s voice. So glad she didn’t
Michael McDonald co-wrote this with Carly Simon. She does a great version too.
This was way before "Yah mo be there" 😆
Such a heartbreaking 💔 moment, and beautiful reunion 🫂 for a mother and her child!! I wish them all the best that life can bring!! In Jesus Christ's mighty name, Amen 🙏 🙌
Try his song " I can let go now"
Michael McDonald collaborated with Kenny Loggins several times - check out "Heart to Heart" and "This Is It" by Kenny if you haven’t already.
Yah mo be there.
Just an odd thought - The first 3 tracks on 'Minute by Minute' has to be the greatest 1-2-3 intro into any album I can think of.
This is the Doobies trying to do reggae - still a great track
We had good music in 7th grade.
Check out Carly Simon's version. It's also very good
Good 'til the last drop. So good. Mmmmmmmm, a gift.
If you have never heard Tower of Power, I would love to see your reaction to hearing them for the first time. I suggest starting with Soul Vaccination or You're Still A Young Man. I will be listening. ✌
Late 60s, early 70s partner!!!!!
Didn’t they use this song in Forrest Gump?
He went with the Doobies after their singer had throat problems although Michael is great I prefer the original singer
Hi there - do you still do Elvis reactions?
Try The Wise ManHas Thr Power
Yeah it's OK, but Tom's the Music Man for me 🤔

Thank you, good citizen! ❤
Pre McDonald's presence they were better.
No question!
