    I agree on the Xmids and the Sawyer Squeeze. I have the Xmid 1P and just bought the 2P. My initial thoughts are I like the 1P better but I am withholding judgement until I have a few trips with winter gear.

    Pick up a CNOC Water bladder with a big mouth opening to make getting water from the source easier! Watching people struggle to fill those little squeeze bottles is beyond my understanding!!

    I always wear a full brim hat and in the desert or at higher altitudes combine it with a hoody. Cinch the chin cord up and put it behind your head so that it is tightened at the base of the curve of the back of your head. It’s out of the way there and actually, except for the strongest winds, does a good job of holding your hat on. If you have very strong winds bring it back to under your chin. I definitely wouldn’t remove it. That’s my method anyway and also is how its used in the military. I’m looking forward to seeing how your new items work out for you.

    I've seen discussions about DCF *shrinking* over time. Also, tensioning DCF panels _not_ in the direction of the dyneema strands causes permanent deformation; I think Dan Durston has talked about this and designed his tent to avoid it.

    • @ShastaBubba
      @ShastaBubba  Год назад

      Interesting. I suppose the dyneema strands run vertically in a mid (?), so that makes sense if there was too much side tensioning. I'll have to look closer at that and see. Thanks!

    Just got my new X-Mid 1 as well, to replace the old X-Mid I have. Was wanting a little more interior room (which they've provided in v2) and those magnetic holders. Can't pitch it yet to try it (still 3' of snow here) but excited to try it out and also to see how you get on with it. I love my old X-Mid 1 and the new version looks even better.

      I feel your pain! I went out last weekend to a relatively dry wildlife refuge near my home just to seek out some bare ground underneath some old Ponderosa pine so I could finally pitch the X-Mid 1. Seems like it might take some getting-used to the space, having used 2-person shelters for years myself.

    Nice insight into some gear thx. I have the Durston X-Mid Pro 2, bought last year, and the only issue I have found is that the magnetic tabs are not strong enough to hold the doors open. I believe that Durston were addressing this issue in the Feb 2023 release of their tent. I haven't had any issues with condensation but this may also be because I use the 2 person tent for just me, as I hate being cramped into one person tents

    • @ShastaBubba

      The Pro 2p might be the best option for these reasons. Happy to hear about no problem with condensation. Do you think the magnet issue is unique to the pro versions? Or has this been reported with the Silpoly tents too? Thanks!

    I too went with a sun hoodie as I don't like lathering sun block every hour which tends to get thick by bed time. I settled on wool as my go to for clothing choice. Wool offers naturally sun protection plus doesn't hold odor, and wool offers self regulating temperature control, keeping warm when cold and cool when hot. Very comfortable. I have 3 versions, Voormi, Duckworth & Ridge Merino. Have to say, of the 3, the Voormi is my favorite and Duckworth a second.

    Dcf doesn’t have any snap back when it’s stretched. People over tightening them is usually when you hear about stretch but I’d say wind is doing the same thing now that you mention it. Dcf will stretch over time and does have to be babied a little. I’m looking at getting a dcf tarp and this does seem like an unfortunate reality. I haven’t seen anyone talk about it, but my worry would be about pin holes forming over time. But if it gets old enough that it’s getting holes from stretching and not abrasion, I’ll probably consider that a win.

    • @ShastaBubba
      @ShastaBubba  Год назад

      Appreciate your thoughts here! My first UL shelter was a very used Hexamid which had all kinds of pinholes but never leaked. I believe the surface tension of water is such that it requires more pressure than the average rain fall to squeeze through those tiny holes, but just speculating.

  • @stonedapeadventures
    @stonedapeadventures Год назад +1

    I don't think most people will have those problems with the dcf stretching, but people that are getting out alot will over time, I've seen a few heavily used tarps stretch enough to leak. if youvare looking for a cheap carbon fiber tripod aoka makes a few sizes all under 1lb and all under 100 bucks

    Interesting thoughts on your gear for this year, and gives me some things to contemplate in regards to my own.
    I've recently begun using an xmid 1p. I love it! I don't have any problems, typically, using a single-walled tent ( I live in a dry climate, and sometimes prefer the simplicity) but was intrigued by the design of the xmid. I thought I might feel a little cramped in it, as I did in my previous 2pole 1p tent - the Tarptent Notch, but I've found the opposite to be true. The out-of-the-way location of the poles in the entrance/s, plus the enormous and easily accessible vestibules make it feel quite spacious. I have the latest version, with the magnetic fasteners and slightly larger inner floor. Perhaps I'm being a little bias towards a recent purchase, but in its weight class, it seems to me to be near perfect in design, and suits my use cases perfectly.
    I hope you enjoy your hiking season and look forward to a review of what worked for you when it's over. Cheers

    • @DingDong-fq2mo
      @DingDong-fq2mo Год назад +1

      A couple of additional thoughts:
      If you take a regular drinking bottle sports cap with you on hikes, and of course a flexible or semi flexible bottle with which to attach it, you can do a decent job of back-flushing the sawyer squeeze in the field. If you make a habit of it, you can maintain a good flow rate in all but the worst of circumstances (in which pre-filtering is wise in any case).
      I prefer a flexible, wide brimmed hat, similar to the one you have, in combination with a long sleeve collared shirt, to a sun hoodie in most situations. The chin straps annoy me too. But with that style of hat, I find it less irritating to have the strap dangle in the back when not needed. Adjusting the length of the loop it creates can help in keeping it out of the way and out of mind. This way, it's still usable when needed. I'm off on a six day coastal walk next week in warm to hot weather, with very little shade over the length of the trail, and high winds at times. No sun protection on head is not really an option when windy, and hoods flap against the ears. Of course, you know your conditions best, just something to consider.

    I also was gifted a CO2 growler. One thought that I had was if the beer from my local micro brewery pours into the growler and I introduce more CO2 to charge the growler, wouldn't that change the profile of that beer? Would love to know if you've tried yours yet and what your impressions were. Cheers!

    • @ShastaBubba
      @ShastaBubba  Год назад

      You're right, seems like double carbonation. I've been thinking about letting the beer 'go flat' first before injecting the co2. Not sure the effect on taste, so guess we'll just have to drink more beer to compare! (It's for science, Honey!) ;-)

    I have a Zpacks Triplex that I've used for maybe around 50 nights over the last 6 years. (don't get out nearly as much as I'd like to). I have not noticed any significant stretching, but maybe I don't use it enough to tell.

    • @ShastaBubba
      @ShastaBubba  Год назад

    I gotta say, you’re going to love the Hero 11. Do yourself a favor and get 3 of their new Enduro batteries. They will work in freezing weather and they last 25% longer. Also, all you’ll need for a weeklong trip is 3 - 256GB micro sD cards at most. But make sure you get the ones that are tan and red, not grey and red. They make super lightweight multi micro sD carry cases that i out in my phone shoulder pack pouch.
    You’re right, however, in the fact that it sucks not to be able to zoom, and in a perfect world you’d be able to carry both the Sony and the GoPro. But…
    The GoPro is literally MADE for backpackers imo. Combined with my iPhone, it is literally all I use for all of our videos. I don’t like doing this but, in this case I feel like you’ll appreciate it, I attached a highlight video below. 99% of this video was shot with the GoPro 10 Black and 1% with an iPhone 12 Pro Max. I very rarely use any external mics or mods, but I do bring my media and light mod for base camp footage.
    A lot of this footage is in your neck of the woods, so I hope it gives you an idea of what your footage will look like. Love your channel btw. Hope you get that Xmid from Dan. I just scored and got a GG Ambassadorship and they sent me a The Two, which I’ve always had my eye on. Looking forward to putting it thru it’s paces.

      @@ShastaBubba thanks my man. Also, I meant to tell you this (but you might already know)…
      Create about 6/7 different shooting settings that you can toggle between. Two for 5K @ 120fps anamorphic style (with the diff between them being the shutter and EV settings for bluebird days and cloudier days respectively), two for 4K @ 240 fps (for any situation you might want slo mo - again with the difference between them being for weather differences), a few for hyper lapses, and one for low light.
      You can name them all so that you have all of those options at your fingertips, and not have to fumble with the settings on the fly.
      Before every trip I play around with the settings and go outside on one bluebird day and one cloudy day and do mock 30 second clips to dial it in.
      You can find a lot of these ideal settings for backpacking on YT or online. Can’t wait to see your 2023 content
