    Great vid Dan..your one of the few that I found that uses the goose feet down pillow, I had to go through many before landing on that one and it’s by far my most comfy..I use a big sky pillow bladder for the inside, the Nemo bladder also is great, I too am side sleeper and prefer soft pillow. Anyway, I always enjoy your vids, love to see more. Thanks👍🏼

      Hey Gary, thanks for mentioning the Mo. I've been reading about Atom packs and they look pretty sweet! Good alternative to HMG, especially if you're European based.

    My favorite luxury item is my Helinox Chair Zero Ultralight Chair, but at 19.2 oz it's quite the luxury item. I'm attempting a AT thru hike this year, so I'll definitely have to leave it behind. Other luxury items for me are my coffee setup, MiiR Pourigami, my Goosefeet Gear Down Socks for sleeping, my Grovee Wireless Thermometer (bluetooth) and my Kindle Paperwhite for reading on the trail. As I gain experience I'm learning that there's a balance between as ultralight as you can go and the comfort of having a few items that bring your base weight up a bit. Keep the videos coming, I always learn something from your content!

      Thanks and good luck on the Thru! Hope you can check in from time to time and let us know how you're getting along. Definitely agree with the concept of balance with what we carry.

    My favorite luxury item is my gsi microlite 1000ml insulated stainless steal water bottle. I started with a simple Nalgene at 6.4 oz, then went ultralight with the smart water bottle at 1.3 oz, then to the gsi at 13 oz. Ive also tried hydration bladder systems and dont like those either. The thing is I spend a lot of time with my pack on and don't like drinking out of plastic all the time for health reasons (even if it's BPA free). it's also nice to have a cold drink that stays cold on a hot day and a hot drink that stays hot on a cold day. It's also more function on cold weather hikes because it won't freeze on me. I like to have my water bottle on the outside of my pack where it's easy to get at so putting it in the inside to keep it insulated is a no go for me. Love your videos just thought id give my 2 cents!

      "nice to have a cold drink that stays cold on a hot day and a hot drink that stays hot on a cold day." . . . that sounds really good! Thanks for sharing your luxury item Luke, I'll have to check those out.

    Thanks for the video. It is fun to talk about gear. My luxury items are, a swiss army knife(walker), an rei chair and a klymit pillow. Oh and I suppose my battery bank/charger for my phone. This was pretty thought provoking for me. What do I really need? Hmmm?

      Always a good question to ask ourselves! I use a heavier version of the SWK too, just to have the tweezers and toothpick, which is probably silly because I could just grab a twig to pick my teeth. Thanks for watching!

    Question: Does deet keep the flies and mosquitos away when hiking in the Bob Marshall or are they just too thick to manage even with deet?

    • @ShastaBubba
      @ShastaBubba  3 года назад

      Deet works great for mosquitos and they aren't so think (in most places) to be a big issue. Best of all, they die out by the end of July typically, so I rarely need Deet at all in August-October trips.
      On the other hand, Deet does nothing for the flies, which can be a problem due to the volume of horse traffic in the Bob (dirty secret, but it's true). Deer flies/Horse flies bite but are very slow and easy to kill/swat and you definitely want to swat them before they bite when they land on you (stings briefly and leaves a welt). Be prepared to hike with long pants/sleeves if necessary, but generally you can avoid them by avoiding or moving quickly through places that are heavily trafficked by horse parties. These flies seem to be most active in August on hot, open hillsides. Much less of a problem otherwise.

      @@ShastaBubba Does deet work well enough for the black flies and ticks ? ( I do hate the ticks. A friend of mine got terribly sick from lyme disease not too long ago. ) PS- I really enjoy your videos. I think I have watched all of them by now.

    • @ShastaBubba
      @ShastaBubba  3 года назад

      @@newlifeeveryday1821 I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos; thanks for that! According to Google, Deet is effective for both black flies and ticks. Even better news is that Lyme disease hasn't made it to Montana (yet), so even if you did get bit in the Bob, nearly impossible to get Lyme from that (although I believe there are other potential diseases, like Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever). In all my years of hiking in the Bob, Glacier NP, the Selway/Bitterroot, Frank Church, etc., I've never found a tick on myself. Hope that's comforting! Just like Mosquitoes, ticks are far less active post mid-July.

    Would love your testing result of using a “hunting” pack, like a EXO or Stone Glacier pack, (4-5lbs) carrying your 25-30lbs typical load. Does the trade off of a UL pack really make the packing easier? Thanks for sharing!! 👍👍

    • @ShastaBubba
      @ShastaBubba  3 года назад +1

      I wonder about that too sometimes, but when I take my Seek Outside Divide pack (packrafting), it never is so comfortable to tempt me to take it with lighter loads. It seems that adding 'just a couple of pounds' really does make a difference for me at least. I guess that's why I like the HMG pack as a compromise between weight and comfortable carry. YMMV. Thanks Gary!

    Enjoyed the video as always. My 5 luxury items are; a pair of down socks from Goosefeet Gear (cold feet), Stuff Pack from HMG (I use it as a pack to check out areas around camp/day outings and store my sleep system in when packing), a Mora Eldris knife with fire steel (for piece of mind if my lighter ever fails), Nemo Fillo Elite Luxury pillow (I love that the the outer can be washed) and lastly a sit pad or camp chair depending on the trip.

    • @ShastaBubba
      @ShastaBubba  3 года назад +1

      Awesome list! I forgot about my sit pad. Started carrying that about a year ago as a test to see if it was worth the extra 2 oz. and haven't gone on even a day hike without it since. Thanks Darrell!

    Great video as usual!
    I just received a Goose feat pillow and have tested it at home but haven't took it on a trek yet. It seems pretty comfy paired with a sea to summit aeros. I'm also awaiting the arrival of a new
    Junction and am very excited to try.
