SS Chevelle does burnouts after sitting for 40 years

- On this episode we pick up a sweet 1965 chevelle thats been sitting for four decades. My neighbor Bobby bought this car from a friend of his who drove it to high school. Its powered by a small block 327 backed by a Muncie 4 speed and has a 12 bolt rear end out back. The engine was locked up and someone at some point attempted to spin it over but had no luck. My buddy Wesley welded a socket to a plate and bolted the plate to the balancer so it wouldn't damage the threads in the crankshaft. After soaking the cylinders and using a jack handle to turn the engine over it finally broke free.

I have a '65 Chevelle. I wanted a car that was built the same year I was born. I love this car and will have it as long as I am alive.
Don't think posi was an option on '65 Chevelle... at least, not with BBC 396" engine...

Watching this. I'm 16 years old again. My first car was a 1965 Chevy Chevelle Malibu SS. I paid $675.00 for it. Bought it off of a K-Mart parking lot on the side of the building where their auto repair was in Huntington Beach, CA. It was totally original and I was the third owner. I still have the bill of sale from the guy I got it from. Also I still have the first ticket that I got and yes I was in the Chevelle when I got it. All of that happened in 1976 . Which sometimes feels like a life time ago, then other times it seems like it was just yesterday. And for that to be a real SS it has got to have the numbers 138 in the vin. otherwise it a clone. And Please don't let the owner put a ls in it.

Deceased neighbor's widow had a nice '64 Chevelle convertible sitting in a garage... 327 4 speed... everybody that looked at it weren't interested because it had flat tires and brake pedal went to floor... somebody finally bought it for $200 just before I heard about it... ouch!

Had one - 327 .. built in Fremont California.
Weiand intake, carter carb.
Looked to be a 4 speed 12 bolt .
Someone replaced the 4 speed with a 350 turbo.
The weight was 2700 lbs. so said the registration- scarey over 90mph . Not aero friendly.
Factory gauges and tach.
Found the right pieces and took the wood grain steering wheel from my 64 impala ss .. had a 396 365 hour from a 66 chevlle ready for transplant. Sold it for 1700.00 ugh!!
Back in the late 80’s.. love these lightweight sleepers.
Nice Find brings back so many memories. My best friend had a red 65 SS Malibu with 4 speed and power windows. He had ED Pink build a 450 HP 327 for it.
We were chased all over SoCal by CHP. This Malibu would do 150 mph. We would do Vanishing Point to anyone . So fast.
I'd use everything that's original and serviceable. What a cool time capsule.

I had a 65 chevelle SS black with the same blue interior. 4 speed muncie and a 4.11 posi. Mine had a 350 in it when I got it. I was in high school, it was the late 70's and I ran the living hell out of it. Went through three 350 engines in under 2 years. It was bad about wheel hopping with the air shocks. I eventually broke the frame in front of the driver rear tire and the suspension arm came out of it. Also had a 69 Charger a 68 and a 69 GTX. I could kick myself on the ass for getting rid of these cars back when I was in college. Started a family and needed money. Could never afford to replace any of them at the prices they command today. This video certainly brought back good memories for me. Thanks !

My Dad had a '64 Chevelle SS Malibu 4 Speed small block 327 that he rebuilt from the ground up when I was a kid. I remember the day he found it and bought it for $300. The front end was smashed in. When he was done with it I could hear him coming home from blocks away and he would smoke the tires all the way down the block. Good times.
Thats a real generous motors. When I was young kid back in 1965 my Dad bought a 1965 Impala SS 327 for $1195 new at a local Chevrolet dealership. Who knew back then what those cars would be worth today? In high school students driving 57 chevys, 69 camero's, trans ams and paying hardly nothing for these classics. Thanks for sharing 👍 .
I have always loved the '64 and '65 Chevelle the most, the '70-'72 are a close second but these days they a little over done. What a gem of a car, great taste.

I had this same car 64 283 4 speed ss...it was snappy as hell. put it this way it, held its own against bigger engines.

I should haven't sold my 1965 Malibu. Sure it wasn't an SS 4 speed Chevelle. But I did have a 65 Malibu 283, powerglide Marina Blue with blue interior. Everyone told me to Hot Rod it. But it was such a cool cruiser to cruise Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach!
I bought a built '68 GTO for $800- back in '85 with a light hit in the rear drivers side. It was built for the track. 4 spd, posi, ladder bars, balanced and blue printed, full race cam, high dome pistons, high rise aluminum intake, Holley dual pump, electric fuel pump, the whole nine. Nice video guys.
The first street race car I ever rode in was a 1965 ss Chevelle with a 60 over 327 with the Muncie 4 speed. With all old school race parts. The old double hump 2.02/1.60 valves the same old school valve covers and a stupid big cam. But man would it turn some rpm’s and back in the mid 90’s if you had a 11 sec street car you had something. I ended up buying the engine and trans when the owner decided to put a 406 in it and turbo 400 trans. I put the engine and trans in a 70 nova and had a blast running 11.20 at the track and lots and lots of street racing. Back then I couldn’t afford slicks and radials were no existent so a old school truck was to get some worn down dirt track tires mount them up and run 12-15 psi in them and they worked surprisingly well for drag racing on the street. It was a sad day when I stuck a rod thru the block. But one thing for sure you will never get one of these new ls or coyote motors running 40 years from now if it sets. I’ve always loved high reving small cubic inch motors. Still to this day same junk nova but with a 377 destroker some chinesium aluminum heads I hand ported and way to much spray. It’s now a 10.0 street car that the grandkids love to go ride around with me in

@@buckeyejim2989 I bought my first crank and rod kit 25 years ago so we are not that far off from each other. I’ve redid the combo 4-5 times but always stay with a 377 ci. It is so fun with a manual and a small shot or nos. It’s by no means as fast as these new cars but enough for me
A 6L iron block LQ4/LQ9 LS will run for 400-500k miles, literally no SBC ever can do that without a major overhaul, you can bet your azz a hydraulic roller engine can certainly run if it turns over just like one of these, just because LSs aren't ypur preference doesn't make them bad engines. When's the last time a factory long block 283/302/327/350 with a cam+springs and a turbo ran an 8s 1/4? There's a kid that ran sub 8s with 4.8L with only external mods and boost in an SN95.
@@hendo337 no one said anything about ls engines we were talking old school gen 1 street engines. Your right ls is cheap junk yard throw a turbo on it makes good power. But that wasn’t around 25-30 years ago when you had to know how to build a motor and how to set up a carb to make power

Two cars that I wish I had NEVER sold. A 65 Malibu ( basically same car ) 283 , 4 speed, bench seat, all original, and a 65 Impala,2 door, 409 with power glide, Ps, A/c ,P/b . Sold them around 1977 . Regardless I’m ashamed to say how much I sold them for . Thanks
Man, I would get me a new GM 6.6 block, put a stroker crank in it, a good set of heads with a hog ass cam and build a big inch LT based motor, either simple n/a with a plate, or force fed...a D1sc kit would be sick on it too! Poor cat, she been resting 40yrs, and yall out beating on it! Impressive 1-2 shift burnouts too! Seems healthy for a motor that hasn't seen fire for 4 decades!

Reminds me of when we bought my sons 67 Camaro. Everything was locked up. Someone put a 62 327 300hp and 68 400 Turbo in it. We just tore it apart and built it instead of trying to free it up. Fixed the brakes and a boat tank in the trunk. It had an almost perfect pair of L60-14s on it it. Took them both down to the belts in a few minutes and it was an open spool rearend. That is some torque. Great video. Glad you got her running.

The interior in this car is in amazing condition for having sat for forty years! The interior usually disintegrates after sitting for so long. A muscle car in this condition is a rare find. Most of the time these car owners only want to sell after it’s mostly rusted out. Oh, and the homemade balancer turning tool was genius 💯👍🏻
K-mart had an automotive department that serviced cars. I’d like that 55 myself. I sold mine over 35 years ago.

It is amazing to me the number of super f badass muscle cars that are in this condition. Super rare cars just waiting to be restored to their former glory.
Of course Wesley wants to buy it....he wants to buy everything.

My first car was a 1964 Malibu SS bought in 1975.
Had the 283 w 2 speed powerglide.
Kept it for about a year and it needed work that I couldn’t do at the time.
I paid $400 for the car and got $400 at trade in.
What a DA I was. If I would have just kept it and restored later.
I would love to have that 65 to restore. Looks to be a good car.

Brings back many fun weekend memories. Very first car back in 1977 was a '65 Malibu SS, 327, Muncie Rock Crusher 4 speed (chrome ball on the stick), factory orchard paint, white interior with black accents. Wish I still had that little racer.

Oh dude Don’t drill the trunk lock. Basically reach through the back seat with a long screw driver and a skinny person. Basically I’d use my 12 year old grandson.

My first car my dad gave me at 15 was a 65 Chevelle SS i held onto it until last year when i got an offer i couldn't refuse....i regret selling it but i have a harry gant 72 Cheyenne truck im redoing and needed the money to finish it up...

I had a 65 Elcamino SS back in the 70's with a factory M22 4 speed and 8K tach. It didnt have the stock motor anymore though it had a nasty 350 LT1. Man did I get tickets in that thing LOL Nice idea that plate you made to turn the motor over. Most guys tryto turn the engine over off the crank bolt which is a total waste of time, You can also take the starter off and use a pry bar on the flywheel as you can get about 20 times the force on it. Plus you can work it back and forth to get it loosened up. But your plate you made is one of the best things I've seen in my 60+ years.

My father bought a 71 with a 327 out of 67 corvette in 1981 for my brothers first car. He drove it until 1985 when it wouldn’t start so I gave him $300 for it. New fuel pump, fired up and still have it today. I was 15 , my first car. Keepm!!

That 55 is actually pretty damn clean Dave! And the '65 Chevelle is my absolute dream car!! I grew up with my dad building cars, in your area, I was in Joliet. Back in 69-71 he had a white 65 SS, all 70's trick paint, flake, silver leafing, 331" 327 and a 4spd., that he'd Rev over 9k+ RPM! Prolly the reason the flex plate came thru the floor, dash and hood! But, since i was little, i loved that car! 'Bad Habit' was the name of the car. He also used to have a yellow '57 BelAir, w/a LS6 based 461" BBC, 4 speed, probably a 800hp motor, it went 9's in a back half car prior to him getting it and rebuilding. This was the early 80's, always in the Oak Lawn area, Dukes, out to Streator... he had that car out one night, getting on I80 and ran through the gears...8900RPM in 4th gear, crazy a.f, 168mph on a stock 57 suspension! After he sold it, I'd see it out every year at the Wilmington car show, motor never had a problem! That was the 1st car that I remember riding in, so i do have a thing for Tri-5 cars...but I'm doing a 1200+hp, 99 Camaro SS now. I sent a iron 6L off to Mike Lough, had the machine work and balancing done, his LS oil mod, decked, line hone, all the regular stuff. But, he spec'd my bearings and sent em, set my crank and thrust, more than I could have asked for, not to mention all the days I bugged him with questions, cylinder head stuff, he got me a set of Dart Pro1 225's at his cost, as the 317's i was going to have done, were usable but had cracks in between the valves, which is common in that casting, but he didn't feel comfortable with doing it on the power I'm going to be making...and it was a GOOD deal for heads! Anyways, thanks guys!

Thats my first car i bought in 79.. i was 15 except mine was light yellow 327 4 sp 12 bolt posi... i sold it to a friend in 83... he still has it but its a strip xar now. I still have the 12 bolt in my 64 malibu 4 sp 327... ive owned since 82... love the early chevelles.. oh and funny thing mine had the 69 70 ss wheels like tbis one... must of been a up grade back then lol

Thats a once in a lifetime for most people these days. Usually you just find junk. Not a ss 4 speed anything thats abandoned and not rusted into an oblivion.

If not the original 327 turned into a 383...get an aftermarket 4.185" bore block, build it with a 3.25" stroke for 358ci with new aluminum double hump heads and run a huge spread bore carb just for that Qjet moan. Whatever you build it needs 17x9 factory replica wheels and spreadbore induction moan even if it's an LS...I feel like a suspension like the one they used on the Pewe Buick convertible from the first "Roadkill" on HRM channel is the right choice because those cars were treacherous stock if you wanted to do anything but a blip of power straight line and you want that blip of power to be an exciting event with ridiculously cool sounds of induction or shreaking exhaust with electric cutouts open but, it's doesn't have to be a sub 12s car to be cool either. Sometimes a build that is well balanced, something that you just want to hop in a drive anywhere, anytime and end up putting way more miles than you ever intended that also doesn't break the bank with terrible economy or expensive fuel.

I worked for Kmart for 18 years-- from 1984 to 2002 (when they started closing up stores), and I was one of the very few Auto Parts Managers they ever had (in Mobile, AL). Kmart had decided to experiment with putting auto parts stores in their old closed-down service centers, and the four stores that were in the Mobile area were chosen as the first in this experimental retail environment. It was a big deal for a while... until the corporate tide changed and they committed retail suicide by trying to compete against Wal-Mart without copying Wal-Marts' methods (which were cut-throat to say the least!). It was neat to see the old tune-up parts in the video-- if you check the price sticker on the packaging there should be a date on the sticker... 3 or 4 digits for the month and year in the upper left hand corner.

The points & condenser from kmart was from after 1991, barcodes came out in 1991. My first car was a nice blue 65 Malibu SS, it was stolen & never recovered. I loved that car, it rode & ran great. Today I drive a 65 C10.

Breather caps are so cool. Not as effective as pcv valves. But so cool . Taking a small block apart and the breather cannister under the intake, brings back GOOD memories of my childhood

that thing is awesome! I like the approach - fresh brakes, tires, some shocks and any ball joints it needs, clean it and have fun. probably put some mufflers on it and a tune up. that is a fantastic find!

Hopefully with the fact that there is such minimal rust, the owner will invest in a complete weatherstripping kit for the entire car (you can see it dried up and cracking real bad on the driver side.... And I'm sure the rest of the rubber in the car is in similar condition)
If he replaces all the door and window rubber, and trunk seal, and have all the fixed window glass removed and re-urethaned.... He'll never have to worry about rust in this car ever. 👏🏻💯
