Hi Doctor, Love your video. My almost 11 year old Shihpoo was diagnosed with reverse cough years ago. Over the last year or so, he will frequently cough or hack with his mouth wide open until a small amount of white, or foamy, liquid is spit up. He also licks frequently during these episodes. My dog is constantly coughing like he’s choking and trying to cough out something, it started when he ran away for 2 days and it rained for that 2 days then we found him in a pound (even possibly he could get a virus or sort there (poor ventilation) When we got home back that happened he’s an old dog maybe 10 years minimum I found out my dad gave him a little Idk a teaspoon or less of night quill (which is VERY TOXIC to dogs my dog is a small chihuahua) I told my dad to stop and he did but I don't think he's going to take him to the vet because of how expensive it is. I just don't know what to do I hope my dog survives though. 😕
Hi, I have a 3 month old chihuahua that recently started reverse sneezing and he also has a dry cough that happens about 3 times a day, it's not a loud cough. He does not cough while running or when he gets excited, it usually happens when he is sleeping or sitting.
Hey Karla. Young dogs that are in contact with other dogs are very susceptible to Kennel cough which is basically like an upper airway infection. It could potentially also be something like tracheal collapse, so I would advise to take him to a vet to be properly examined.
My dog Wicked is coughing right now. It’s a very soft huff noise occasionally followed by a gag. He’s vaccinated against kennel cough, and takes heartworm medicine. He’s a 4 year old Cairn Terrier. He only does it in the evening for a few hours, and has recently started snoring. I’m hoping it’s just really bad allergies. We’re calling our vet tomorrow.
Hey Eris. It is good that he's vaccinated and taking his heartworm medication, as that already rules out two possible causes. Your vet will know best what the cause may be after doing a clinical examination, but based off of the symptoms you described and the type of breed, there is a chance that he might have tracheal collapse, which can be fairly easily managed medically. :)
Dogtor Pete Here’s the update on Wicked! We just got the call back from his vet, and he does have a very mild case of bronchitis. He’s been put on antibiotics, and should get better soon! Thank you for everything Dogtor Pete! :)
@@ninakara585 Wicked is doing really well! The medicine helped him, but if it seems like it’s not helping your dog I think it’d be a good idea to call your vet and let them know just in case. Our vet told us that exercise would also help clear out his lungs, and that also seemed to work (just a bit of play, if he gets too winded you should stop). Again I’d just do a little check in with your vet over the phone just to make sure things are going smoothly.
I have a Japanese Chin that’s been coughing for 8 months now and it’s like non stop, chest scan is normal , throat scan is normal , no vomiting no weight loss, she is very happy , I have tried almost 10 diffrent medications and non of them is working , the only thing that’s reduces the cough like only 10% is the anxeity medication , any thought or idea would be much appreciated as my husband and I are taking turns to sleep at this point , like we all are absolutly miserable with this situation
@Dogtor Pete My 3 year old Beagle has just started coughing usually for 20-30 seconds once or twice a day. Vet said he has reverse cough and gave anti-inflammatory. Got him home and now the last few days he also sounds like he is snoring softly when he is asleep and grunting softly like a pig when sniffing around. Sleeping a lot. But being a Beagle he is never going to be refusing food.
@@laurenpitts1449 Hey took him back to the vet in the end and he had some slight infection in his nose so it was nothing to worry about. He is all better now. Hope you get the same result.
@@alexwolf8019 I’m glad it’s fairly normal. After the infection cleared up with mine he hasn’t done it since. He does snore a bit when he is sleeping still but I think he’s just super tired when he does that. Mine was coughing every few minutes or so and for a good 20-30 seconds when he was sick. It worried me because I felt like he wasn’t getting enough air the way he was coughing. He had a general anaesthetic at the vet and they put a camera into his nose and throat and found some infection which they cleared up and gave me antibiotics to give him. He has been totally fine ever since.
Excellent video. Great to hear the SA accent that's when I knew I needed to listen. My fiancée is SA and I am Irish, we live here in Ireland and it's very hard to get a vet to listen to you. They will only do what they think. My husky has been coughing for about a year or so on and off. Also when he howls he starts to cough. No vets have been able to help me at all. He got a scope of his throat and it was a little inflamed but no foreign object. He is diabetic and bg is not controlled after 3 years and he does pant a lot anyway so unsure if it's heart failure or cancer or what? It's very frustrating as the vets here seem to be behind other countries. Any further tips or information or even how to approach my vet to get them to explore further would be appreciated.
Hi, Doctor. My 11 year old corgi and lab mix started having problems a few months ago. He started slowing down so I thought he must be getting old. But about 3 weeks ago things started going downhill. He started being lethargic, then a few days later he had muscle spasm around his abdomen and his sides, he lost his apetite, he lost a lot of weight and now he has been coughing. The blood tests came out good and his organs seem to be functioning ok. The only issue was that it seems that he has an infection somewhere in the body. The vet said he does not have kennel cough either. We have an x ray scheduled for next wednesday but I need to call the vet in the morning because he coughed up some blood tonight. His breathing is loud and sounds wet, like a motor boat. I have been crying for 3 weeks straight. I am thinking he may have issues with his heart. Hopefully we will be able to find out from the x ray. I need to see if they can bring it forward to sooner or to ask if there is any cough syrup i can give him to make him feel more comfortable because I can see this cough is not easy to live with… what are your thoughts on this? If any
@@JimboRoberts77 I am sorry to say that we had to put him to sleep on 5th Sept. The doctors said that one of his lungs was half filled with fluid and blood. They couldn’t see what caused it but said that it was most likely a tumour. So cancer. They did not give us hopes that he could get better. The following 2 days he went downhill and had trouble breathing. We chose to end his life instead of waiting for him to die a horrible death. I really hope your dog gets better soon and your news will be good ones 🤞🏻

My chihuahua of 11 years has a heart murmur and has recently developed a worse cough than usual (always had one) and we’ve been advised that her heart is pressing against her trachea resulting in difficulty swallowing. So, she coughs a lot when drinking. Can anything be done?
I have a 12 year old Chinese Shar-Pei, pitbull mix that has a hack. I’m a poor man without enough money for tests on myself let alone my dog. What should I do and be ready to be charged trying to go to the vet? A simple suggestion would be very helpful!
Have you done anything? Is still coughing? I have a 12 year old Pitt and he has been coughing for 6 months vet gave him kennel cough meds. Didn't work then gave other end of spectrum of antibiotics and that did not work. They did a heart worm test neg x ray on lungs look great heart is perfect and throat looks fine. I got meds for lung worms and other parasites wich I continue to give because it is flee tick heartworm and other worm preventer but he is still hacking 2000$ later and acts like the same dog just wit a cough now. Wish I knew what to do too!
My 4-month old puppy coughed just once so I figured it wasn't s big deal. But she had a drop of blood on her paw so I'm scared. I'm not sure if the blood came from her teeth or if it was there before she coughed. I think she's fine but I don't wanna be careless. I'm worried.
My 8 year old collie mix has been coughing for several months. She doesn't go to see her vet for 2 more weeks. I'm anxiously researching and listening to coughs and afraid hers is caused from heart condition.
Hey Brittany. Your vet will be able to tell if it is a heart condition by listening for a heart murmur. Given his age it could be a possibility, but it will be best for the vet to rule out the other causes as well so that the dog can be started on the appropriate treatment. :)
My moms dog went to the pound and hasn't been the same. Coughing wheezing shaking as if he was traumatized in there. 😢 How long does it take before you see signs of kennel cough?
My dogs cough just started this morning when we got up at 8:30 and it's now 3:40 and the cough won't stop I have never heard her cough so much normally she coughs one time and she is ok well the coughing is still going on and it's got me worried I always run to the vets ALOT because things scare me I never want to loose her :-(
My dog pulls really bad on the leash so I assumed she’s just choking herself, but she does do it and it sounds like she’s hacking for a few seconds. It’s not all the time but she makes a weird cough once in awhile. Is that normal? It’s not often enough to catch at the vet or get on video so I feel stuck here
Hey Rosie. That could cause strain on the trachea that can result in friction and irritation resulting in the cough. Rather switch to a body harness to distribute the weight more towards the chest instead of the neck. Hope it helps :)
My dog has a dry cough every few hours or so he’s had it for many years and it Has not really gotten worse the vet said it could be allergies or trachea collapse but he’s not really sure he also sneezes sometimes when he coughs but I notice he mainly coughs when he is resting
how can i differentiate what is causing the cough. was told my dog had heart disease and after a year of being on meds she did not get better, got second opinion told she has zero heart disease symptoms n that it is collapse trachea . Its a very wet gagging type cough and sometimes throws up white fluid at the end of a spell. She was put on steroids for a few weeks which did lessen the cough however it came right back after the steroids were done. She has zero heat /exercise tolerance . Had every test done available and all came back normal so the vet cannot figure it out so it seems im on my own , any suggestions?

Hello doc. It's been 2 days that my dog is coughing like he's trying to throw up.At first I thought because she ate something again because she likes to chew everything but this time, she's coughing like that constantly. I can't take her to the vet cause we are under semi lockdown.
There's a street dog beside my house, it coughs like daily at around midnight. This has been happening for around 5-6 days. The sound seems too painful. What do you think it could be and what should I do.
My dog was bit by a rattlesnake a couple weeks ago and had to stay overnight at the vet. About a week later he started with Kenneth cough symptoms. Now it’s a horrible loud coughing and gagging sound over and over all day. I’m assuming kennel cough and not as a result of a rattlesnake bite complications? He just started kennel cough meds today
More info for Tucker ^ He is 14. He's always eaten w/me (steamed veggies & chicken or swaii) He still wants to play 24/7 (tug a war and fetching, wears me out!) But the episodes are getting more frequently 3-4 daily. The coughing is random. In between playing. Walking or just lying.
I have an 11 year old yellow lab. She started coughing and gagging the last 2 weeks. Only happens when she is running or active. She eats fine snd drinks fine. But strange… she covers her food that is uneaten with leaves or pine needles Coughing sounds painful. I do not have money for her to have surgery or intense therapy. What are my alternatives?
Our Aussiedoodle has a chronic lung issue. She will have coughing events when she hacks out globs of clear mucus for about an hour. We spent thousands of dollars with numerous vets seeking answers and treatments, other than antibiotics and strong steroids. We were finally offered a solution that has seems to work. Now Sophie gets a sniff of asthma inhaler every 12 hours. It is a targeted tiny dose of steroid rather than a systemic dose of prednisone. It seems to be working and her nervousness has been reduced as well as her appetite. She has an emergency inhaler that is a bronchial dial at or, but we have not needed to use it yet.
@@BetsyModglinL from Amazon, we bought the AeroDawg The Original Canine Aerosol Chamber Inhaler Spacer for Medium & Large Dogs with Exclusive Flow-VU Indicator. It’s about $62. The human inhaler fits into one end, and the flexible nose cone fits over the dog’s nose. I place my hand over the nose cone and shoot the inhaler before placing it on Sophie’s nose. The inhaler “firing” startled her the first time. But now she just sits there and I wait for her to breathe in about seven or eight times. I give her a little treat afterwards and lots of praise too. Now I just tell her “Time for your sniffer!” And she comes running to me.

They prescribed antibiotics twice and steroid treatment. Nothing is working. They did an X-ray and still can't find the source. So upsetting. It's super loud and she has a coughing fit once every 30 minutes.
My dog dry coughs around 10 times when she gets excited Like When I come home she does it until she gags, and then it seems to stop. Recently, she just seemed to have a full-on panic attack like she couldn't breathe and was struggling to get enough air through the nose. It wasnt reverse sneezing. I'm worried, and we don't have any funds for the vet right now. Any ideas? She's a pomeranian it sounds like possible trachea collapse. Could it just be panic attacks?

My dog got hit by a motorcycle on Friday his private part was sticking out it did go back in this morning scratches between there and in between his legs he has been coughing barely eating he is able to walk
The vets they always say surgery so they can make money, they are so expensive and their medication too, you can buy medication at. Chewy less expensive or good rx very less expensive just ask your vet for the prescription
Why do you then even bother asking your vet for a prescription if you don't want to make use of their services? Vets only recommend what is best for your pets, and medical care is expensive for both humans and animals. So it is your responsibility to plan ahead and to be financially prepared to look after your pets, instead of complaining about expensive vet bills.

Karla did you ever get a diagnosis? This sounds EXACTLY like why my 3mnth old Chihuahua has at the moment and I'm so worried 😟
@@AdornmentFreakdid you? Having this happen with a 3 month old yorkie
Great explanation of canine coughing👍🏼
Thank you Linda. Glad it was helpful! :)
Dogtor Pete Thank you! 😊
Dogtor Pete Here’s the update on Wicked! We just got the call back from his vet, and he does have a very mild case of bronchitis. He’s been put on antibiotics, and should get better soon! Thank you for everything Dogtor Pete! :)
@@pipperminty hello how is your dog doing now? My dog also has bronchitis but the medicine they gave us doesn’t seem to help his cough one bit :/
Thanks so good to hear 😊
I have a Japanese Chin that’s been coughing for 8 months now and it’s like non stop, chest scan is normal , throat scan is normal , no vomiting no weight loss, she is very happy , I have tried almost 10 diffrent medications and non of them is working , the only thing that’s reduces the cough like only 10% is the anxeity medication , any thought or idea would be much appreciated as my husband and I are taking turns to sleep at this point , like we all are absolutly miserable with this situation
Thank you for your video

My 3 year old Beagle has just started coughing usually for 20-30 seconds once or twice a day. Vet said he has reverse cough and gave anti-inflammatory. Got him home and now the last few days he also sounds like he is snoring softly when he is asleep and grunting softly like a pig when sniffing around. Sleeping a lot. But being a Beagle he is never going to be refusing food.
What was the outcome for this? My beagle is having this problem now.
My Puggle has same symptoms, I thought it was kennel cough but booked to see vet in a couple of days

Very helpful video...thank you
Excellent video.
Hi, would you like to know 2 home remedies that will help treat your coughing dog or puppy?
If any
Hey Greta I hope your Dog is better, my 3 year old Puggle is showing the same symptoms you describe. We have an appointment with the vet in 2 days
@@gretageanina7811 so sorry to read that. I’m sure you gave him a good life and did what was best X
@@gretageanina7811 so sorry for you. I hope the fact that you were working to get an answer gives you some comfort. My chihuahua of 11 years has a heart murmur and has recently developed a worse cough than usual (always had one) and we’ve been advised that her heart is pressing against her trachea resulting in difficulty swallowing. So, she coughs a lot when drinking. Can anything be done?
My dog just came home from kennel. He is making a choking sound but he has also ripped open a stuffed animal I'm worried about that has well.
@@marksimmermon5046 Wow! Heesuz! My LabPitt mix coughs after drinking or eating only. I didn't hear the video doc mention that cough.
@@DogtorPete thank you. Her appt got moved up to Thursday.

@@DogtorPete thank you so much! I will switch her ASAP!

how can i differentiate what is causing the cough. was told my dog had heart disease and after a year of being on meds she did not get better, got second opinion told she has zero heart disease symptoms n that it is collapse trachea .

Any chance it could be kennel cough?
Did you get her to the vet? If so, what was the outcome? Hope she’s ok!
Hello good morning dr
There's a street dog beside my house, it coughs like daily at around midnight. This has been happening for around 5-6 days. The sound seems too painful. What do you think it could be and what should I do.
Call your local animal shelter not animal control they should pick them up
use Doxycycline and omnicortil tablets
Very informative

My dog was bit by a rattlesnake a couple weeks ago and had to stay overnight at the vet. About a week later he started with Kenneth cough symptoms. Now it’s a horrible loud coughing and gagging sound over and over all day. I’m assuming kennel cough and not as a result of a rattlesnake bite complications? He just started kennel cough meds today
How did he go ? My dog was bit by a snake recovered but keeps coughing
My chihuahua has coughing along with episodes of staggering and falling. Can you give an idea of what might be the the cause?
How do you administrate this. My Aussie Doodle has the same
@@BetsyModglinL from Amazon, we bought the AeroDawg The Original Canine Aerosol Chamber Inhaler Spacer for Medium & Large Dogs with Exclusive Flow-VU Indicator.

My dog dry coughs around 10 times when she gets excited Like When I come home she does it until she gags, and then it seems to stop. I'm worried, and we don't have any funds for the vet right now. Any ideas? She's a pomeranian it sounds like possible trachea collapse. Could it just be panic attacks?

The vets they always say surgery so they can make money, they are so expensive and their medication too, you can buy medication at. Chewy less expensive or good rx very less expensive just ask your vet for the prescription
Why do you then even bother asking your vet for a prescription if you don't want to make use of their services? Vets only recommend what is best for your pets, and medical care is expensive for both humans and animals. So it is your responsibility to plan ahead and to be financially prepared to look after your pets, instead of complaining about expensive vet bills.
