Omg, finally somebody made this video. There are way too many new player guides that assume you already have an avenger or a cutlass, or just tell you to immediately rent a better ship. I know it's mostly symptomatic of CIG still REALLY lacking gameplay consideration for the Aurora (and to a lesser extent the Mustang) but it's still insane that new player guides just ignore this...
@@Psychobob Yeah, because there's nothing fun to do in an Aurora still. A huge chunk of players only have an Aurora MR. (Myself included, I backed during the Kickstarter). I follow religiously but play very little because... there's nothing to do... Combat is awful in the Aurora, the flight controls are clunky and it takes forever to get anywhere and then it glitches when you do get somewhere. The longest I've played ever was when FPS Mining and caves were added and I went cave mining, got lost in the cave despite my best efforts, cave felt completely infinite, and worse there was no way to chart my path through it other than clunky to use glowsticks (I do love the glowsticks, it's just absurd that they're as clunky to use as they are while being THE ONLY WAY to find your way out) and then eventually ended up in a crevice on the floor that was glitched such that it was impossible to pull myself out and I had to suicide. Again, I'm not really complaining about the overall state of the game, I love following development and I think overall CIG is doing amazing work. But man there are a couple base experience aspects that are just frustratingly unusable right now. Still can't zoom in on a planet in the in-game map without weird clipping and twitching, you can't see any details about the planet, it's just kind of a white blotchy sphere that keeps clipping for the most part, and you can't select a coordinate on it and set a quantum jump point.
@@Whyyyyyy Was among the first 10k people that got to play the game (with an LN), let me tell you the Aurora wasn't always this bad. The Auroras got intentionally worsened over time, you bought the lesser ship after all and it should not be able to compete so easily with more expensive ones. Please remember that this game is decidedly NOT going to be pay2win! (post release and also please remember you can't "win" Star Citizen *winking smiley* ) CIG made a move to make ships tiered stat-sheets with dedicated roles and functions you can level up, instead of making them customizable to a degree that you could consider them characters of their own. The Aurora got shafted with that decision, the community lost interest in the ship and so did CIG. My LN used to be a space IL2, now it's a paper plane with a bullseye painted on it and the "rework" was CIGs most lazy attempt in updating an old design. Not only is it laughably similar, to the point of being basically a copy, it also fixed old clipping issues by introducing new ones, that's how little care got put into it, very disappointing imo.
thats because RSI want you to spend money! I only have the Aurora and never upgraded... @@jamesp7987 - I mean videography generally refers to capturing the video, rather than assembling it. Getting clean smooth video like Morphologis shows is really difficult in SC. :x
@@Blankstate Be that as it may, because this is a video game attempting to simulate what being in space would look like as though it were real, the capturing of this footage was done by an in-game equivalent of a camera. I say this because Star Citizen gives us this versatile 3rd person view that can be moved around in real time. Furthermore, because you can adjust the focus of images in this view as though it had a real lens apparatus converging light rays onto an image sensor, I would say that we should treat it as though this is real footage captured with the in-game equivalent of professional camera equipment. In the future, I would not be surprised if we were given more controls to make it a more realistic experience, especially when the Reliant Mako becomes fully functional. This helped a ton, I deliberate stayed away from combat because I didn't feel like diving into the nuances of the building system. This video made everything simple, succinct, and easy to understand. Much love.
The starters have one huge edge. They will make you invisible. When NPC's are added to the game proper they will fill any location with plenty of small ships which means the most common ships will be the most visible. And if you are a customs inspector, will you stop that Star Runner for inspection or will you sift through the 50 Aurora's with cargo boxes in the local area...
"lower tier are more efficient and ideal for frequent longer distance travel..."....I would tend to disagree, actually. If you're in a lancer, and max for instance, most of your time is going to be on cargo runs. Having the fastest QT drive available not only lets you cut through the system faster and lets you return to the game faster, you also have a better chance of beating 30k bugs and not losing your cargo. Also, most of the trading posts can refuel at the pads, so efficiency is not a concern for me.
@@420247paul In this vein, the Banu Defender is technically the fastest ship in the game. it has more than 4x the QF tank of most small ships, or about 2500 (more on that later). In addition, despite being mostly medium, it uses s1 quantum drives, meaning it has access to the fastest quantum drives in the game while also having the fuel capacity to actually make the longest jumps possible in the game multiple times without refueling. A Defender can make 97% lightspeed and keep jumping without refueling. HOWEVER, the acceleration is awful and you barely reach top speed making the longest jump in Stanton despite being a bit faster than s2 quantum drives on paper. This is funny because a s1 quantum drive is only good over incredibly long ranges where their terrible acceleration (especially stage 2 acceleration) but only hte Banu Defender theoretically has enough fuel to use an s1 drive in this way. Aside from Defender, Pisces and 100 series both have ~800 capacity QF tanks, about 40% more than the standard small ship capacity (which i think is around 533). I still tend to stick to the Atlas or Voyage, simply cause I got used to refueling being picky and unreliable in 3.9 and don't trust that I will always be able to refuel. Larger drives are slower matching say a military A tier S2 to a military A tier s1, and they consume more fuel. BUT THEY CARRY WAY MORE FUEL in relation to their consumption and have better acceleration. All medium ships can easily fit and fly a crossfield or Yeager quantum drive and make the longest jumps in Stanton. In terms of alpha, an average small ship with a Voyage (the "fastest" qt drive that can make it from PO to Microtech without refueling) takes *6:30* to make that jump. The Defender takes *5:30*, and barely reaches top speed before having to decelerate. A medium ship with an s2 XL-1 QT drive only take *4:30* due to being at top speed longer. At the scale of the alpha (just the Stanton System), the Yeager, Crossfield, and XL-1 are the best quantum drives. As an interesting trivia bit, even with the biggest quantum tank (the carrack) with the most efficient s3 qunatum drive(the agni), the carrack wouldn't even make it halfway to Neptune before running out of fuel. So that is how small the Stanton system is by scale.
Fuel costs and general maintenance is nearly negligible, even now (full year after your comment). Design intent is that fuel and basic maintenance costs more than it does currently. Any time you go smaller you go way lower on all forms of maintenance and fuel. But unless you want to go really slow the small fuel tank lowers your effective range.
I haven't played SC for some time now but I stopped when microtech came around, I have a 325a and the cargo thing never worked so I couldn't put boxes, and from that update, you could no longer go up the ladder with a box to store it in your ship habitacle... Still don't know if they fixed it
@@c4_yrslf726 Correct, patch 3.8 absolutely ruined the box experience. As a 315p pilot I can confirm that the current patch fixed that problem. I have been having a good time. The 'cargo bay' is still not intented for handheld boxes
One key consideration when choosing your starter pack: the Mustang is valued at $5 more than the Aurora, but both packages cost the same amount. When it's time to upgrade, you're basically throwing away $5 by starting with the Aurora. My recommendation if you prefer the Aurora is to start with the Mustang Alpha package and upgrade to the Aurora LN.

Great Guide! When i first started a month or so ago one of the areas i struggled with a lot was ship upgrades, it was hard to find anything informative online. It's also worth noting that if you are browsing the Erkul DPScalculator you can see the shop location of the items currently fitted by clicking the little shopping basket icon and it gives you a price and all the shop locations, it helped me out when i started using it! Fly Safe!
Now that s1 gimbals are finally sold in shops you can most certainly do more with starter ships. The Mustang can make a pretty good bounty hunting ship with the same hardpoints as the Arrow and the Aurora can do a lot more types of missions like recovering stolen cargo with the 4 gimbaled weapons in combat.
This is an excellent starter guide for new players in new ships. In all fairness, a lot of the starters are better by far than they were even a year ago
I consider myself experienced with most of the loops in SC but components...not so much and this video helps a lot with that as i now know to get the military ones cos they are the best....so this is a good guide for me even after playing for a while
I'm running a MOLE and this video was actually really helpful, nowhere else really explains this low level stuff and it often just goes under the radar without explanation
No matter how much you think you know, you always learn something new thanks Morphologis this is a great video. I've been a backer since 2015 and still learned something.
Also just wanted to point out that the F7C is also massively underpowered by default, but carries immense firepower potential. The nose and the two wings can hold S3 for a total of 3xS3 hardpoints and the cargo rack mount can be exchanged for a fixed S4 gun. Its only problem these days are actually shield holes and some weaker armor, which should be fixed in the future.
This is a fantastic guide for new players, but also veterans! Fantastic quality too as always! I think a lot of us discount the starter ships but with the recent release of the Carrack, I have been seriously looking at getting an LN again (mine is now a Super Hornet) to have as a more powerful combat snub craft for the hangar while sacrificing a little bit of utility from the Pisces. New players undecided between the two should definitely also take that into consideration. If you have aspirations of one day owning a Carrack, you may do well to go with the Aurora as it will still be useful even when you've amassed all those millions of credits and purchased a Carrack.
Very nice. I noticed on the dps calculator site that as you pick components if u put them in the Cart...then view the cart...it shows u where u can buy the component too...found that handy
It's nice to see this type of content to really break down everything that make up your ship. I will definitely send new players to check out your vids.
Way back in 2016 i got myself an MR and upgraded it to LN and decided not to buy any other ships until the game is actually out. At the time little did i know it would be so long and we are nowhere near close to release yet. But i flew it a couple of times in testing, its def not a bad ship as far as starter ships go
Not seen your channel before, i thought i knew the best SC channels but i have to say the quality of yours with the voice and the visuals makes it the best ive seen.
Very helpful video! I remember when I first started playing how hard was to figure out how to upgrade stuff, what is compatible and so on. The erkul tool is amazing
Ive had my quantum drive blown out once... Kinda sucks being stranded in space full gear xD lucky i was in contact with a friendly org who came to pick me up 😅
@Cliven Longsight Your critique is justified, but goes for many ships. I have a Cutlass, an Avenger Stalker, and a 315p. The 315p, is the only one in my hangar with a toilet, and places to keep food. They could essentially solve the toilet issue by making a plaque somewhere indicating the fold out toilet's location. We don't need actual poo gameplay, but the indication that there is a toilet makes our ship more believable. When it comes to the two doors of the Aurora., I think you are meant to be able to dock them to a docking tube, and then you have a door to the other vessel and one outside, or you might chain-dock a load of Aurora's to each other
I was watching Loud Guns and a couple other guys - talking about upgrades, and I had exactly this thought. I don't have a PC that will play the game (yet), so watching this just confirmed my thinking. I /like/ the Aurora, too.
I love your cinematography Just a minor correction, the DPS calculator already tells you the price and location of the components in game, no need for the second third party website

its interesting that the HUD UI is so different in these ships from most other ships in the game. Is it just because they haven't been updated in a long time, or is there another reason why the targeting UI and other HUD elements seem less sleek than many of the newer ships in game?
the aurora is an amazing ship. I have not tried the mustang. but the aurora, outfitted with 2 more gimbals and guns. I have not lost a battle with any of the bounties even claim jumpers hammerheads. and even has a little space for cargo if you're into that too.
Great content, thanks. I have a couple of questions though. 1. Why can't the boxes from box missions be thrown in a cargo hold area?, and 2. If I upgrade some components on a ship, what happens to the previously installed components? Are they placed in my inventory, and can I use them on another ship, assuming they're the right size? Thanks in advance.
I just bought the game and it's downloading now. I already feel like I'm going to enjoy this and know kinda what I'm doing from the beginning thanks to this video! :)
I really like the starter ships. They're fun to fly, generally pretty nimble and have their weird aura of possibility. That might just be the reminder of where my journey in Star Citizen began, but they still make me happy and you don't need to worry too much about knocking them about or losing one in a fight. Looking forward to the Origin 100 Series starters, those should be a bunch of fun too.
A very good and informative video. Something that may have been pointed out in the comments below though however is erkul.com had locations and prices for all commodities now. so not much need for item finder for ship related components. But the item finder is still good for finding out the prices of ships, gear, and other items and their locations in the verse.
Great video. Begs a part 2 explaining why not to just pick the most expensive components, and what to look for in component combinations. I like the FR-66 with the Palisade for my Aurora. I could use more help picking other components as well.
I kind of went into that a little, it increases your EM and IR signature which makes you more detectable from longer distances and thus more trackable by missiles. This can be especially dangerous versus stealth bombers with torpedos, which you generally don't notice until you wake up back in your hab.
My starter ship is my first love in this game, and she will remain with me and see regular use throughout, I love my Aurora, sure I want bigger and better, but I will always keep and use my aurora and hopefully paint the damned thing eventually. I do wish they would fix the upper rear wing tips though as they seem transparent during quantum travel. I do however, miss the sunroof above the bed in the old Aurora, still pissed off they dumped that for a couple side windows you can't look out of. I wanted to lay in my bed drifting through nebula, looking up at the view.
You probably should have added that in order to configure your ship it needs to be stored (that you did) but also YOU need to be in that port where the ship is stored. Never called up ships can be configured from anywhere until you call them up for the first time.
I'm actually able to grind out VHRT bounties pretty easily with a well equipped Mustang Alpha. In the current bounty hunting meta it's not a half bad ship, especially considering that it's a starter. As an added bonus claiming the ship is quick, and expediting it is negligibly cheap and restores your ship instantly when it gets destroyed.
Anyone else also noticed a HECK of a lot more thruster fluctuations and misfires in 3.9? I mean its kinda cool i guess, makes your ship feel alive. But in 3.8 it happened to me ONCE after like 50 hours of gameplay. In 3.9 it happens once or twice every hour.
Aurora so many possibilities ! You have cargo room ! You have coffi- bed ! You wave toilet (just piss out of one of doors) You can pew pew other ships. And even kill them if pilot is afk. You can mine in them ! (still you have to mine manually from side door) but you CAN mine in them ! You can go to prison with them ! Just try to touch other ship. Bigger speed = bigger chance to respawn in Klesher. And all of this in one small ship !

I think the Mustang has the best pilot visibility in the game.
Yeah that's something I wish my aurora would have.
I love the aurora look tho
@Cell Chaos Mantis as well lol
Prospector is good too :3
But I hate the huge reflections and scratches on the glass. Desperately needs some cleaning and polishing.
This is an excellent starter guide for new players in new ships. In all fairness, a lot of the starters are better by far than they were even a year ago
I consider myself experienced with most of the loops in SC but components...not so much and this video helps a lot with that as i now know to get the military ones cos they are the best....so this is a good guide for me even after playing for a while
Your has become my favorite SC community content, Morph. I hope you still enjoy it and keep at it. Looking forward to the next one.
I got SC two days ago, and at first I couldn't figure anything out. But now I'm becoming obsessed with this game!
I'm running a MOLE and this video was actually really helpful, nowhere else really explains this low level stuff and it often just goes under the radar without explanation
hopefully there will be a tutorial for when the game comes out. this will fly over the heads of so many people.
Thank you Morphologis for taking the time to make this video. It is extremely useful and informative. Keep up the great videos!
Of the ships I have, the smaller ships like starters are easily some of the best ships.
It's nice to see this type of content to really break down everything that make up your ship. I will definitely send new players to check out your vids.
Excellent how to video. It explains everything clearly and doesn't leave any unnecessary gaps.
Great video, extremly helpful!
Also, great videography Morphologis, absolute pleasure to watch!
Ive had my quantum drive blown out once... Kinda sucks being stranded in space full gear xD lucky i was in contact with a friendly org who came to pick me up 😅
One of the best starter guides I’ve seen, thank you for this!
I startet playing about 3 days ago and i never thought that this game has such deep things like this. Good video very nice and clean explained.
The Aroura would be perfect if they replaced one of the doors with a locker and gave the ship a nose utility mount.
@Cliven Longsight
Your critique is justified, but goes for many ships.
When it comes to the two doors of the Aurora., I think you are meant to be able to dock them to a docking tube, and then you have a door to the other vessel and one outside, or you might chain-dock a load of Aurora's to each other
Thanks for this guide on modules and the starter ships! It makes much more sense now!:)
Starterships are awesome. I have big ships but always go back and play with my smaller ships.
I love your vids especially for those high quality cinematics! I would pay for an hour of those from you, they are simply amazing!
I was watching Loud Guns and a couple other guys - talking about upgrades, and I had exactly this thought. I don't have a PC that will play the game (yet), so watching this just confirmed my thinking. I /like/ the Aurora, too.
For newbies: DO NOT LOG OFF IN YOUR SHIP ON THE BED! It can glitch and a lot of the times it will and you will have to reset your entire account.
I love your cinematography
Just a minor correction, the DPS calculator already tells you the price and location of the components in game, no need for the second third party website
Thank you for taking the time to do these videos, they are so helpful!
I've been playing Star Citizen for years and I still found this video useful and entertaining.
Is it worth buying the game now?
@@ranggasaktibudiputra1547 It is worth it provided you understand that the game is not done so your progress may or may not be there from day to day. It is still a fun solar system to to explore.
@@Ryecrash617 thanks for the reply! So does the solar system is that big to explore?
@@ranggasaktibudiputra1547 It's ridiculously huge but the majority of it is empty space. There are planets and moons to explore and you can easily spend days on each planet if you want to see every inch of it.
Thanks for sharing this! I'd been avoiding tuning my ship due to all the issues you mentioned.
Dude this is a great video, i've been playing for a month and still found this very helpful.
Man, last time I played, my ship was overheating mid quantum and I couldn't reactivate it for a long time, didn't know how to fix it, or what components to buy, or where to buy them. Now I have a good idea. THANKS BRO 👍
I got the Aurora years ago, played a few hours, crashed it into a bigger ship and called it a day.
Total Newbie, just got my first ship, an Aurora MR, and this has been very very helpful, a vast improvement over most of the 'stuff' others post. Subscribing Ofc
Thanks sir. Awesome as usual.
This was the best starter ship/starter guide video I've seen to date. Nice one Morph!
Im so glad u guys are making these videos for new players
Lol, I though "upgrade" was meant as, buy a better ship :D Unexpectedly turned more useful then initially thought!
This is great! thank you! Can you do a video on advanced camera controls please?
its interesting that the HUD UI is so different in these ships from most other ships in the game. Is it just because they haven't been updated in a long time, or is there another reason why the targeting UI and other HUD elements seem less sleek than many of the newer ships in game?
Nice to finally have some idea what the hell im doing in terms of upgrading my ship. Thank you for that! :D
Man I fell in love with the C8X Pices
Great info. Thanks
Yes this video has been extremely helpful, I've not played the game since like 2.7 so all this new stuff is mind blowing
Excellent topic, and likely of major help to newbies. Thanks for making this.
What is the music at the beginning?
the aurora is an amazing ship. I have not tried the mustang. but the aurora, outfitted with 2 more gimbals and guns. I have not lost a battle with any of the bounties even claim jumpers hammerheads. and even has a little space for cargo if you're into that too.
This is so massively helpful and concise. Thank you.
the Erukl Games "DPS Calculator" site now make it possible to find where to get components on a loadout as well.
What was the song used at the start of the video?
Oooh, I didn't know you keep your components upon losing your ship. This changes my outlook on components greatly
Just won an Aurora LN in my organisations dogfight tourney... and i LOVE IT :D
I don't even have a starter ship anymore but damn those tools you linked are crazy useful
A very good and informative video. Something that may have been pointed out in the comments below though however is erkul.com had locations and prices for all commodities now. so not much need for item finder for ship related components. But the item finder is still good for finding out the prices of ships, gear, and other items and their locations in the verse.
Very helpful video for a new player, thank you very much!
Great video. now I'm comfortable with upgrading my ship.
Yeah thanks for the info. New player here and been trying to figure it all out.
Finally!! Been waiting for this video, you kept talking about making it on stream and I would check everyday till it was posted haha.
Good vid, i'll share this with friends that are newer players. Thxs
Haven't heard of the change to ship component insurance! Thats cool!
As an added bonus claiming the ship is quick, and expediting it is negligibly cheap and restores your ship instantly when it gets destroyed.
you made me play this game
great video, and I love your choices for music in it.
CIG is probably trying out different variables for ship component wear.
Wow, beautiful video footage. I really enjoyed this one. Great info for all, not just noobs. Thanks!
6:40 high-level explanation of the ship/shield component categories
Great video Morph! Very informative for a newbie like me. I love your videos, man!
Thank you so much for this guide I’ve been struggling for a good minute this really helps a lot again thank you!
I love flying Aurora MR. Its so small, yet effective in all kinds of roles. Gets me anywhere!
At 2:29 is it not possible to put boxes in the cargo bay? If not then what
Aurora so many possibilities !
You have cargo room !
You have coffi- bed !
You wave toilet (just piss out of one of doors)
You can pew pew other ships. And even kill them if pilot is afk.
You can mine in them ! (still you have to mine manually from side door) but you CAN mine in them !
You can go to prison with them ! Just try to touch other ship. Bigger speed = bigger chance to respawn in Klesher.
And all of this in one small ship !
