Three years later!! No one has performed it better than this performance. Bravo as usual. Jerry Herman would love this one too! Perfection. Maestro Wilson, you are the best. Don
What a performance; unequalled! How awesome that the legendary, Donald Pippin, left such warm and wonderful comments about the handling of his own vocal arrangements, what a tribute to this talented group of artists!! Seth McFarland is a true renaissance man! This video is MUST SEE.
How wonderful to have the complete performance of the title song from "Mame". The dance music is brilliant, I'd say good vocals too, Phil Lang's orchestration is masterful. Jerry Herman's writing and certainly not last----John Wilson's conducting and the fantastic orchestra's playing---Bravo---Bravo. Don Pippin
Wonderful performance! Kudos to John Wilson, the Maida Vale Singers, and the John Wilson Orchestra! Such great phrasing and feeling with great Jerry Herman lyrics. Wish it would come back to Broadway!
I JUST LOVE THIS LIVELY MUSIC. A BIG "THANK YOU" TO ALL THE MUSCIANS WHO MAKE IT COME TOGETHER. I LOVE TO WATCH THE SINGERS AND THE INDIVDUAL PEOPLE PLAYING THEIR INSTRUMENTS. AND, I JUST LOVE TO WATCH JOHN WILSON SWINGING ALONG WITH THIS GREAT MUSIC. HE IS REALLY ENJOYING HIMSELF. I AM TWIRLING AROUND THE ROOM AT THE END OF THIS SONG. THANKS AGAIN! SYLVIA - P.S. MY BIRTHDAY IS TODAY SO THIS MUSIC JUST MAKES MY DAY! SYLVIA!
The previous number to this was "Don't Rain on My Parade" sung by Anna-Jane Casey, she also did the encore which followed Mame which was "Tap Your Troubles Away" and Tap she did. Both are here on RUclips. The awesome Trumpet player is Mike Lovatt
His name is Lindsay Benson. He is an organist and choirmaster. He is also a professional singer and singing teacher with an enormous range of genres and styles in his background. On this occasion he was singing with the Maida Vale Singers.
It's a real shame...this is from American theatre and it takes a British television network and orchestra to bring it to the screen. Why can't/won't US television undertake projects like this? Oh, never mind.....
+Steve W because the U.S. doesn't force their people to pay $200.00 per year for the right to listen to radio and watch TV. and then send vehicles around the neighborhood to search for those who don't pay the fee and imposing $1,000.00 + fine if you don't comply. amazing that the folks in the U.S.contribute millions to the fkng BBC for shows that appear on PBS and PBS Masterpiece. The U.S. continues to fund the U.K. government through this scheme.
And that shall price gives us some world quality TV, one of the best news channels, music events and much more What TV station in the US can compare for quality and variety. Not to mention a royal charter that specifically demands balance on issues and no government interference
It was the exact same arrangement as written for the Broadway score as recorded on the Original Broadway cast album with the exception of one thing. Why did the the singer who sang Beauregard Jackson Pickett Burnside's solo change the lyric "You may be from Manhattan..." to "You come from ole Manhattan..."? Was that a conscious desision or did he make a mistake? To me it appeared deliberate. Why? Just wondering...
How did you get a copy of this? Is it possible to buy this night at Proms ....Mon Aug 27 2012? Was it televised on BBC? Love this beautiful arrangement! Thank you for posting it.
What difference does that make? There are plenty of shows that might not be "in the top tier of American musicals" but that produced wonderful songs ("Mack & Mabel" gave us "I Won't Send Roses" and "Time Heals Everything"; from "Merrily We Roll Along" we have "Not a Day Goes By" and "Old Friends" and "Good Thing Going"; the list is endless). This is a great performance of a wonderful song (a song, incidentally, that made the charts for Louis Armstrong, Bobby Darin and Herb Alpert). And by the way, "Mame" won three Tony awards, ran for four years on Broadway, established Angela Lansbury as the beloved star she is today, and gave us "We Need a Little Christmas" and "If He Walked into My Life" among other timeless songs. Not bad for a show that doesn't make your top tier.

RIP Donald. Your generosity to this performance was just a fraction of your class.

When I get a little down in the dumps about something, I just listen/watch this video and it is like medicine.
It's actually impossible to watch and listen to this without a big, wide, silly grin. God bless John Wilson and his wonderful orchestra

No, in America people pay up to $1,000 a year just for Cable TV. There ain't no free TV here.

Anyone notice they took down Wilson's version of "Barn Dance" ?? Too bad.

when BBC was worth the tax
Seth has no rhythm .
J GREEN
It's ok. His other great talents compensate for that...😉
A nice performance, but let's be honest, Mame isn't in the top tier of American musicals
I beg to differ !
I disagree. It's right up there.
I disagree with you, I’ve seen this musical several times and it’s fabulous! Have you seen it yourself?
