I've been blessed to play the role of Mame twice and every time I hear this song, those wonderful memories come flooding back. I can't stop listening to this version; it's spectacular!
Today I was feeling down-and-out and did what I always do to cheer myself up... listen to music. I decided to indulge myself and listen to a song that brings back memories of good times. You see, I played the title role of Mame in a college production 45 years ago this spring. Because I played Mame, I never sang this particular song. But the whole experience of playing this iconic character was exhilarating and at the same time exhausting. She's in just about every scene and had 14 costume changes! But I was 21 years old and had the stamina and talent to make a good showing. Sometimes we have to go back and remember when we've risen to the occasion with no reservations and full-on gusto. Today I needed to remind myself that I still had the spirit of that young woman in me. This isn't narcissism... It's reaffirmation. By the time the song ended my heart was swelling, my spirit was enlivened and I felt the sting in my eyes just before tears. I felt so grateful that I had the opportunity and blessing to play Mame Dennis. All through my life, I've always tried to live by Mame's credo which is: "LIVE! Life is a banquet! And most people are starving to death! Yes Miss Dennis! I've lived! "
I hadn't the foggiest notion anyone I've written would actually be online right now; read it, and reply! That's wonderful! Thank you dear heart (Michele Hurtado).
LARRY DARIAN Lol! I know what you mean. Sometimes it's several years before you get a response. This was pure serendipity. Once again thank you for the comments.
I love this song. So uplifting for me. I listen to it 3 or 4 times a week and usually more. I love this version of it the best but am always looking for other version's I have not heard but always go back to this one.
Outstanding. I love this performance of the title song from "Mame". This orchestra and the Maida Vale Singers are fantastic. Wonderfully lively. Thank you for posting this.
This orchestra is the epitome of wonderful. You in the British Isles are so fortunate to have this quality of performance at hand. I buy their recordings as my treat.
One the absolute greatest musical numbers. And, no matter what the moaners say, I love the 1974 movie version. Lucille Ball, Robert Preston and Bea Arthur are all excellent.
wonderful singing and the orchestra simply sensational i loved this and the song very well done, bravo to you all, and also to the conductor of the orchestra great job, fine job loved it!!!!!! Great job John Wilson
I don't understand classical music but it is so obvious to see that what we witnessed here is "Genius". This is incredible work. What John Wilson did here is simply Amazin!
I could listen to this repeatedly. MAME was our Senior Class Play in 1983. We hired a professional choreographer from NYC. Also hired, was a string ensemble to perform along side our outstanding band. Sold out all four shows. At our 35th reunion, a VHS copy of our production was viewed. I can tell you how joyful we were. Ecstatic!! One of my greatest memories from high school, being in the cast.
Among other things, it’s very well shot and edited. Love the shot of the strings playing madly during the dance break. Also seeing John Wilson exhort the chorus on their “yow!!”’s.
This brings the memory back of being taken as an 11 year old to see Mame starring Ginger Rogers at Drury Lane in London in 1969, one of my most exciting days as a child.
This is making me glad to be alive this morning. What a gift to be able to write this kind of music for the world (or at least some of us) to enjoy. And it is a "gift"; he was able to play the piano superbly practically from birth,
This is a beautiful rendition of the wonderful song " Mame" from the fabulous musical " Mame," Such a wonderful Musical Director Mr John Wilson, just love all his orchestrations, Great orchestra, Great soloists, Fabulous.
My introduction to main list through this movie Lucille Ball got balls for this but it was my first time seeing a Broadway play and to me you will always be the best production of Maine
Mame..n Hello Dolly almost identical for me..not sure about others..i learned this piece mame n Hello Dolly when iam 15years...never heard about this b4..but once trying playing with the piano this two piece..i c some simillar chords progression..well..love both piece n the movie as well..thank u Mr. Jerry Herman for such a beatiful piece n its wonderful ..
It's an annual event. The John Wilson each year blows all the other orchestras off the stage. There isn't anything they can't play. They make all the other stuffy "Established" orchestras look like they are sleepwalking through it. Check out Tap Your Troubles Away at the Proms with Anna Jane Casey. Then try the Tom & Jerry suite. Enough said!
Actually I think that is unfair, The Promenade Concerts are a celebration of classical music, popular music is a fairly new introduction into the programme. Some would say it is 'dumbing down'! That said, this is my favourite sound from a favourite film.
I keep this close because I once as a kid had the equivalent of an Auntie Mame. I too wish it were louder and bolder and brassier. And about the south rising again? Come on, Auntie Mame is the one who said "Life's a banquet and most poor sons of bitches are starving to death." Pull up to the table.
The song never sounded better. What a thrill that must have been live! Now if only Cancel Culture will leave it the hell alone. (All those naughty references to the Confederacy. There were two Black singers up there, and they don't seem to be bothered, so why should you be?)
I've been blessed to play the role of Mame twice and every time I hear this song, those wonderful memories come flooding back. I can't stop listening to this version; it's spectacular!
I've never heard my vocal arrangement performed better!. Bravo to all those wonderful singers.
Oh! That's your's Donald! I haven't seen you post here for long time. :) Not since Experiment by Cole Porter. Your arrangement, too. THANKS!
Wow! Coming from Donal Pippin, this is high praise! It's too bad that the soloist does not get the lyrics exactly right.
well said
Agreeeee
RIP Don Pippin. You and Jerry Herman gave so much to the musical theater. Hope you and Jerry have reunited and create heavenly music now!

LARRY DARIAN Thank you Larry. I appreciate your saying so

Just beautiful, Michele. ''and I felt the sting in my eyes just before tears."'
Damn, I listened to this in my arm chair and still gave it a standing ovation! 👏👏👏👏
What a brilliant musician director leading the orchestra! Bravo at least ten times.
It is not an easy Overture to pace. Conductor Wilson is the best.
I hope John Wilson is aware of your appreciation of his work. He obviously is appreciative of your work...as we all are. Thank you.
I could watch and listen to this over and over, just brilliant.
I love this song. So uplifting for me. I listen to it 3 or 4 times a week and usually more. I love this version of it the best but am always looking for other version's I have not heard but always go back to this one.

A great performance of one of the most rousing of all Broadway showstoppers.
That orchestra is just incredible. I could watch the conductor for hours.
Also, I would die for “tonight the South will rise again” lady.
Yes yes and yes, she captured it beautiful 👍
I don't understand classical music but it is so obvious to see that what we witnessed here is "Genius". This is incredible work.

Had to come here to listen to musical greatness, rip Jerry Herman.

First time I've viewed this celebration. Beautiful presentation by all involved.
SIMPATICISSIMO il Direttore d'orchestra e bravissimi i componenti del coro..
This video is a show stopper and the orchestra sets the gold standard for this nostalgic moment of Broadway history. Thanks for sharing!

Fantastic.

Super duper... Jerry Herman never heard it like that!
A tribute to Jerry Herman
and
Angela Lansbury
Is this the Pippin arrangement about which Ethan Mordden said “the sopranos should have gotten combat pay”? These sopranos certainly my earned it.
Beautiful song MAME
That was really good!
That horn the last minutes of the song is incredible!!!!!! The whole thing is incredible but that horn makes my heart skip beats!
Mike Lovatt on Lead Trumpet
I was lucky enough to see it on Broadway when it debuted
Excellent!

Best rendition of "Mame" EVER! Where was this wonderful event?
Very nicely done.
BBC Proms Broadway is the best I've ever seen on TV ! Why is there no more of this with that wonderful Anna Jane Casey ?
Great! Much better than the dreadful movie.

JERRY HERMAN -- HURRAH! That's my comment!
And Seth MacFarlane!
After nearly 60 yrs they need song books??? Lol. I could sing it in a coma.
Same HERE
Splendid
Sound level seems to be way down for some reason
Again, no one does it better than the English. They proudly sing..
La cantante de vestido morado, es Sierra Boguess. Monísima!!
Increadible
Nice!!!!!

" Mame" What a job!
Can anyone tell me what Proms this was? i.e. date? Many thanks to all.
LA ANTERIOR SALIIÓ EN LA VERSIÓN CORTA. ESTA ES LA BUENA. ESCUCHEN QUE RITMO!!!
Who's the conductor? He looks remarkably like the young Jerry Herman.
That, my dear, is John Wilson, who's orchestra is the best in the land!
Seems you are in the minority......
Shirley Everson j
Why is the audio volume sooooooo WEAK? Pity because this is one of the few performances of the full MAME song on YouTUbe.
This song always gives me the creeps after seeing the movie version
Fab
Let's bring back MAME Immediately! Lady Gaga? Beyonce? Shakira? Janelle Monnae? Queen Latifah?
LA ANTERIOR SALIÓ CORTA. ESTA ES LA BUENA
Show
Looks a lot like Judy Carne from Laugh In
Lucille Ball was the best Mame.
The song never sounded better. What a thrill that must have been live! Now if only Cancel Culture will leave it the hell alone. (All those naughty references to the Confederacy. There were two Black singers up there, and they don't seem to be bothered, so why should you be?)
wish it was louder.
HAW! This ain't no rock & roll radio processing.
