Time constraint is a huge thing for gameplay animation as well. You want your animation as quickly as possible in engine to see if it works, and that can be intimidating for a cinematic animator. Also the time to create an animation is also reduce because gameplay animation tend to be cycle or quick/reactive motion to be responsive to input. And finally I agree this is one of the most rewarding jobs ever. As always great video Harvey really enjoyed your perspective 👍

Hey Harvey, came across your video through one of my friends. I’m an animator who has recently started on some scripting. Hoping to get into gameplay animation myself. Thanks for your insights, they really motivated me to continue. I find solving the technicalities the best part of this and I’m glad to know that there are others who share the same love as I do.

Great video as always Harv! It feels especially relevant to me right now as I've recently started my first job animating for games, and I'm pushed more and more to learn Unity for game integration which is a little bit daunting as I'm not the most technically minded... But thinking of the end product and the prospect of seeing my animations really used ingame is definitely exciting

So I've been doing animation stuff on my own for about a year now and I've uploaded some of my stuff to my youtube. I've never really taken any post secondary or anything for animating and I'm worried that it might hold me back. Should I consider post secondary or do you think I should just keep doing what I'm doing and send my portfolio to some smaller studios to start off with?

I've always hated working with people that wants to work in the games industry and says I don't play games it's both male/females and whenever I reference a game or had toys on my Halo, Kratos etc.. My coworker at the time 6yrs she never head of Master Chief and didn't know WHAT A ZOMBIE IS and ask are they ALIVE OR DEAD...... real talk man LOL or the ones that doesn't play games but watches only the cut scenes and play PC only games.
Now there's nothing wrong with PC games but if you apply to a company that makes console or your not staying up to date on the latest games then why apply to a game studio. I love wwe but not the games so yrs ago when I worked on it it was fun. But this one person didn't know Ric Flair or how a wrestle does the low blow it was so lame watching the Lead explain this to another animator bottom-line I've worked with some silly people man. I think Riot games & Blizzard are really strict on who they hire and why you want to work for them.
Anyway so many good tips here main thing for me is passion for games is a MUST and I agree animators should be able to put their won animations in game it's so much fun and rewarding. It was weird years ago on a project just animating and not putting them in the game and I said I'll never do that again.
