Of all the videos I watched about tips on getting into the industry, you're the only one who said "be a good person." Most of the tips out there are about getting your portfolio/demo reel better. I really appreciate these tips. Thanks a lot sir!!!
I think the reason that he's so appealing as an animation RUclips channel, Is that he does so much more than just animation, he's a person and he's really down to earth and relatable. plus he also just gives consistently rockin' advice.
Thank you SO much for this video, Sir! I'm about to graduate from AnimSchool and I'm so nervous about putting together my reel. These tips are super helpful and makes me feel more confident about what to put on it.
Can you do a video on resumes and cover letters .. !!... The key tips to keep in mind while making a resume that can get you hired into the industry as an animator !!
This is very informative. I like to think of demo reels like an actor's audition reel. You're basically auditioning for a movie role. You need to be able to know how to act and go into the character's headspace.
I got a question a guy had hired me to finish his 3 minute Animation for him and he was going to pay me and everything when I first talked to him I asked him when he needed it done he said uhh asap so I gave him an estimate of how long it would take me which was like a month which I thought was about normal for 3 minutes of Animation then he said no I need it done in 1 day I said thats rather fast but I will try, well his rigs had a lot of issues so I told him the second day that I will need more time he got angry with me and said he didn't want to work with me anymore then he bragged at how long he has been in the industry and said that he said he needed some who is serious and continued to insult me I sadly was never paid. Is this normal for freelance Animation or was the guy pulling my leg and being a jerk?
Should've asked for half upfront, someone asking for months worth work in a day is usualy a sign they'll try to abuse you and bail out, generally, while shouting how you suck.
My mentality for music has always been to make it something easy to listen to so it can be kind of ignored, but the volume sets the level for what the recruiter should expect to hear from my dialogue stuff, so their volume isn't too quiet or loud when those shots come up. Am I right or wrong with this method? I don't really know. I've been working at cartoon studios for six years, so it at least works okay for that.
@@SirWade I think when it comes to sound in general, Environment Artists are in the best position. They can simply use a subtle matching environment soundscape that will increase the immersion of the scene. Rain/thunderstorm, wind in nature, mechanical humming, the background noise of a big city...etc. When combined with a subtle atmospheric music/-soundscape, it can push the immersion even further without being too intrusive or standing out. If done correctly I think this is one of those combinations that not many recruiters will find unfavourable.
Great tips Sir! awesome vid. YES to being a good person. I usually say "be someone people want to work with". Especially if you got the interview, it's just about sealing the deal with future family members (40-50 hours a week is a LONG time to be around someone)
I would say it goes even way lower. If you can make 3 outstanding sequences that blow the viewer away, you can get away with a 45 seconds reel, of which 10 seconds are your contact data and links.
I really like the complementary lights in your background, but I feel like your shot composition could be improved a bit. If you had a little more head room in your shot, a strong key light, and the camera at eye level, I think your video could look a lot better. Love the videos!
This is great feedback; I’ve been trying to figure this out actually! I’m having the hardest time figuring out where to put the dang key light haha. I appreciate it!
Sir Wade Neistadt try the right side of the screen matey make it feel like it comes from the computer, the animation is the light. Maybe add some rum in the background
I have heard at the end or demo reels but you can also leave a breakdown on your description area below the title of the video. Breakdown for anyone that doesn’t know, is where you number your shots and next to the shot you put what and/or where you got your rig.
Sir, question: I've been advised to put descriptions of my contributions to each shot on my reel. However, I'm uncertain how to do this without it being distracting. Also, I'm deliberately keeping my clips short to accommodate the patience levels of potential hirers. I'm not sure how short clips can have such info on them, as even the bugs can be detected just enough before the next clip starts. Do you think this ought to be done (I'm a VFX artist and in some shots, it's unclear exactly what the effect is), and how ought it to be done?
Hi Sir, i'm just finishing my 3d character animation master in Spain, and i'd like to know how is all the stuff about negociating your salary. I've been told that when it's your first job and your getting hired as a junior, you usually don't negociate much, but once you get better and aply for better possititions, you have to negociate. How do you know how much to ask or if what the studio is offering you is too low?
have you done any videos on character acting emphasis? I'm working on my own shot and it's difficult for me to figure out what poses to hold on or when to exaggerate them.
Sir Wade, Which one should be more preferable for a demoreel... Studioworks or personal works? Btw... A huge thanks for clearing so much doubts! You're the best🙏
I've got a question: Do you have or could you make a video on where to start as a beginner? I wanna get into 3D animation but have hardly done any 3D animation so far. There are so many videos and tips out there and I'm a little overwhelmed and don't really know where to start. Do you have good exercises for beginners? Tips on what they should focus when they start animation in the first place before jumping into other/ more complicated aspects? Or tips on a good workflow for beginners (I read it's good to start working in stepped mode before switching to bezier etc.)? That would be really awsome! Maybe you've already done a video like that and I haven't found it yet :) Btw I love all of your videos I've watched so far, they are really helpful and fun to watch!
Sir Wade, i really enjoy your videos. they're very informative. I wanted to ask if you could do a video on how to choose a concept for a personal work. Usually when its about personal work, I tend to get confused as they are so many things that can be done and then I cant decide which one to go for. It would be great if you could give some tips. Thanks
This video is so helpful, thank you Sir Wade! And I would love a video about portfolio websites and about resumes and all that hiring stuff haha. Also as a huge Harry Potter fan I love the HP reference you made and the clips you included, that fenix scene is indeed iconic!
Hello Sir! lol.. I've just started editing my reel and have one shot with dialogue. Your tip to give a count down before it starts is genius! I'm also a little nervous about how fast they want me to be. I'm a traditional animator, and can get those keys and extremes out pretty quick when drawing, but the inbetweens can sometimes take a while. Is a month too long of an estimation for an almost two minute shot? Thank you for your tips and tricks to help us newbies feel better about applying for the jobs we love.
Sir Wade, I just watched the new Wizards Tales of Arcadia series and saw today's announcement that there will be a feature length film coming in 2021. I'm pretty much a newbie in actual animating, although I've down some work in Blender. Do you think there's a chance that if I work very hard I could get on the Trollhunters Rise of The Titans team as a crowds animator or something?
I subscribed, hit the bell and even pressed on the like button wish me luck guys on my demo reel! jokes aside, very informative video and will recommend this content.
Hi my animator friend I have a question is kinemasster a good software for making animation reels because that's what I used to make my first animation reel practice test
Hey! Good stuff, definitely would like to see more videos like this. How to create a website and developing social media to help promote your work to clients and recruiters. Cover letter, resume, and just hiring stuff in general would be great to see more of. Keep it up! :)
I have a question, when you get hired at an animation studio, will they give us a program to use ? For example I work with maya but I can't use it for job so if I het hired will they give me version of maya that I can use ot for job?
Dear Sir, I'm a huge admirer of your knowledge & highly appreciate your style of teaching. Currently I'm stuck with a confusion for my new game animation demo reel. Would be great if you can answer my question :) Looking at current market trend & job descriptions, there is a demand on working with mocap for animators. If I use mocap as a base animation clip & add keyframe animation to create a few Parkour/Action sequences, will it get considered as cheating? What is the best practice to follow for game animation demo reels, pure keyframe or mocap mixed animations? Thanks a ton Sir.
Do you know anything about the programm Akeytsu? It is software that dedicated for character animation and presumingly easy to use for begginers. It would be interesting to hear you opinion about its interface and anim pipeline
I just wanna say I really appreciate what you do, your catalog of videos will be really really amazing when I start really getting into animation. I have loads of animator friends and I'm just learning Blender right now. Having lots of fun and really excited for the future.
Do you also have advice on self teaching animation? Or sth for career changers? Because only after finishing University with a degree in Linguistics I decided I wanna do 3D and I made a "smaller" course with a certificate where every 3D topic was shortly spoken about and with tasks to do, but I wanna deep dive in Animation and I dont know about the animation exercises you are talking about in this video except for the bouncing ball :) I would be very glad for anyone knowing sth or if anyone can recommend any yt videos for it? Or like a path to follow along?
My demo reel has almost 4 minutes but it's because there are two long scenes.... And I already sent it to three different places..... 0_0 But! The best of best work is right at the beginning so...
Hi!Love ur vids the first vid ive ever watched from u was the realife cartoon thing when it wus forst out but i just subbed now not subbing emidiately wus such a big mistake i did then :)

The tip on adding how long a shot takes is gold. Even though I'm a Motion Graphics Artist it can be a great extra sell for the work.
Yes,
Please upload some information on resumes and cover letters we need in the animation industry
Great advice, liked the piece at the end about being a good person and talking about your progress!
Thanks for the tips! I just started the first course in animation basics with Animation Mentor so this helps even with assignments
The audio cue idea is great! Thanks for that tip.
your work room is just pure inspiration

Defs a jerk my dude
3 minutes in a day isnt happening. Even in 2D.
LOL even rendering will take more than a day for a 3 minutes shot
@@m.motionstudio2877 Exactly!!!! This guy was absurd and asking for way to much

so much info but well presented thank you Wade

I think that’s a great mentality! I’ve never heard anyone use it that way but it makes a ton of sense :)

Lino Di Salvo (Head of Animation on Frozen) told me, that you just need 2 amazing minutes on your Demo Reel :)
I would say it goes even way lower. If you can make 3 outstanding sequences that blow the viewer away, you can get away with a 45 seconds reel, of which 10 seconds are your contact data and links.
Thanks for the tips! I was originally going to use loud intense music but after hearing your explanation, I'm nuking that idea LOL
Man you're a Legend Educator

Probably a dumb question, but when using other peoples rigs in your demo reel for animation, at what point should you credit the rigger.
The end of the demo reel
I have heard at the end or demo reels but you can also leave a breakdown on your description area below the title of the video. Breakdown for anyone that doesn’t know, is where you number your shots and next to the shot you put what and/or where you got your rig.

Same
Why not both?
I don't know, I like to have everything in one place. So I only splitted my portfolio to ArtStation and RUclips, because of media difference.
I am just a student and I don't have cool shoots but I will make a demo reel soon as possible. Thanks for amazing video
Yas!!! We stan mr.Neistadt serving us quality animation content! Literally the best animation channel on youtube.
