Antique Miter Saw Restoration

- In this video I restored an antique German miter saw that I purchased 4 years ago. After finding out that this saw was built in 1905 I decided to preserve the history of this piece a s much as I could.
I also discovered an amazing trick that they used 120 years ago. Placing sandpaper between wood and metal helps to keep them steady for a very long time as we see in this video.
This restoration brought me satisfaction, thrill, joy and some frustrations. I spent almost two months restoring this beauty and recorded over 300 clips to create this video. Hope you will enjoy watching and see you in the next one!

@@FFD_Restorations Всё прекрасно.
Forgive my English but I'm Italian. Finally a conservative restoration that aims to maintain originality and does not want to make the object appear as if it were brand new. The object is reborn but proudly shows its age.
Wow, thank you kindly sir!
I'm a 70 years old tool maker.....I take my hat off for your craftsmanship.....I admire your old ways of restoration and love your workplace...well done....👍👍👍💯💯
Thank you very much sir! You are a real gentleman. Best wishes from Norway!
Oh, I have a saw like this, but only 30-35 years old, but collecting dust & watching this inspires me to clean it up! And clean up the some 60-70 year old tools that had been my Dad's!
Your working tools are the stars of the show. That drill press ....
Best restoration work ever seen without electricity, hat's off 🎉
Wow, many many thanks 🤗
Nothing says craftsmanship like a refurbished antique tool brought back to perfect working order and has the ability to be put work once again, excellent job, enjoyed watching.
I don't usually watch such long videos on RUclips but your channel is unique, so I watched the whole thing in one go.
I appreciate that! I know! It is the longest video I have ever made. Thanks again!
Wow! I was not expecting that foot powered rotary tool. This is my first time watching one of your videos. You must put in a lot of hard work on your restorations if you use these same tools every time.
You, your old styled tools, and your working style, are unique. Thanks for sending this video. Have a nice day.
Thank you very much! You too, cheers
🤗👋😀
If through our greed and stupidity we return to the Stone Age, all these hand tools will be priceless.
I admire your passion and skills. I feel like I did in my teenage years when I liked to spend time in Mr. Józef's forge! It was a real atmosphere for tough people.
Congratulations and warm regards, as usual 💖👋😀.
I think this is the first video I've seen of yours in a long while that I really got mesmerized watching all the way through. definitely worth the watch.
Wow, thank you so much! It means a lot to me 🤗
Excellent - and thank you for not spoiling it with music .
A very nice and cute antique. I think this tool has received all the attention and detailed restoration it deserves. It will suit your workshop very well. I had a great time watching it, thank you very much for sharing it with us. Take care of yourself Gentleman, Cheers 🥃
I think so too! Thank you kindly my friend. Looking forward to seeing your next project! Stay safe 🥃
That was a beautiful restoration on that miter saw. Wow, it came out nice.
Thank you very much! Cheers!
I would love to see this restoration done with modern tools like a sandblaster, lathe, welder, and other electric tools. Watching this video transported me back to the 19th century! Thank you! Thank you!
Thanks for watching and suggestions!
Praca , przedmioty poddawane renowacji, narzędzia jak sprzed wielu lat . Coś wspaniałego , przy oglądaniu wręcz zapiera dech w piersiach . Życzę wielu udanych renowacji i dużo zdrowia oczywiście subskrybuję , serdecznie pozdrawiam z Polski.
Bardzo doceniam mój przyjacielu, dziękuję Ci serdecznie! Pozdrawiam
I have a Millers Falls Langdon Acme 74. I think it was made between 1910 and 1920. I love using that mitre box. This video is excellent. Keep up the good work.
Great work and tank you for teach us magic
My pleasure, thank you kindly!
Beautiful restoration of a very nice antique miter saw. Nicely done
Glad you like it, thank you so much!
Marvelous job you did restoring the antique miter saw. It looks much better and it works like a charm too. Excellent work as usual.
Thank you very much!
You are by far my favorite restorer. This was really exciting choice. I have restored my Norwegian master builder grandfather’s finishing hand saw and one of his wooden slot planes. The old tools are amazing thanks 🎸🔪
Wow, much appreciated 🙏
Awesome, glad to hear it 🤗
It’s beautiful and you’ve kept its history and personality. And it cuts so well too. Bravo!❤️🐝🤗
Thank you so much ma'am! I'm glad you think so 🙏😀👍
@@FFD_Restorations You’re most welcome❤️🐝🤗
Hello from Brittany. Thumb up !

I dnt know if I like the really good repairs or all the old tools he's got but nice work👍
Wao!Was!!..really awesome with out technology modern and finally a perfect work...blessings
Much appreciated 🙏
This is the most steampunk workshop ive ever seen, stuff of my dreams lol.
It’s restored but still maintains this weathered rustic look! Excellent work as always.
I was aiming for that, glad you noticed! Thank you kindly for watching and kind words 🤗
Simply excellent Sir. Well done
Much appreciated, thank you kindly!
Impressive restoration 👍🏾
Thanks 👍
Great restoration as always 👏👏
Thanks again!
As You know I love the old stuff. So, it's a great pleasure to see this restauration. And to know - I'm not one weirdo - an alone fan of old equipment. Our (the fans like You and me) name is the legion I suppose!
Using old tools to restore old tool. Very interesting
Great restoration and that saw cuts nice.
Much appreciated, thank you kindly!

Very good job very nice thank you iam from srilanka
So nice of you, thank you kindly!
Back then carpentry was much more involved, windows, joinery much more adorned. These kind of great tools did the job.
Fantastic job Boris, for once again you've managed to breathe new life into an old, neglected tool. Not only have you made it work again but I like that you have maintained the aged look which shows its history of use. It was pleasing to see that it still gave accurate cuts. Thank you for the video and for all of your hard work producing it. Cheers.
Much appreciated my friend, very kind of you! I tried my best, thank you for noticing 🙏
I appreciate your patience, have a good one!
Cheers!
Well done!
Tolle Arbeit 😊❤
I have learned a lot and I am very happy with the work you are doing 🎉
Happy to hear that! Thank you kindly!
old school, old styled... great!
Now that's what I'm so glad to see. I'm going to have a great time tonight. A glass of bourbon and an old-school craftsman's restoration 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
That's great to hear, enjoy your evening my friend 🥃
Thank you for not disassembling the whole saw. I’ve never understood why some drill out pins, posts, etc instead of hand sanding the piece. You kept the character and originality of the piece.
I was thinking of doing so, but realized exactly what you pointed out here. Seeing so much history in this piece it would be a shame to do any differently. Have a good one!
From Italy 🇮🇹👍
Great work
Thank you so much 😀
Wow!❤🫶👍 mit Geduld und Liebe restauriert! Alte Schule😅

Very nice restoration. I love how you got it working again but kept it original-looking. Very nice. Also your drill press and lathe setup are wonderful!
Thank you very much for the kind words and watching! Stay safe!
Hermosa herramienta!! muy bien restaurada! te felicito maestro! Saludos cordiales.
🙏👋😀🤗
When did you begin to collect all of these old tools? When did you decide to do all of this? Where did you get your training?
Not only are your restorations beautiful, but you have a fine way with editing your video. Thanks so much for a very interesting and enjoyable show!
Hey! For many years ago. Please see for more details here: ffd-restorations.com/pages/about.html

I have got behind on watching with work being very busy and no time, and what a video to start catching up with, beautiful old tool added to your collection and an excellent job brining it back to how it should be, I suspect your weld went hard because the base material is likely cast iron and the weld absorbed some carbon from the cast and also being a fairly large piece of metal cooled quite quickly leaving the weld hard, and cast could well be why the cold blue acted as it did but that would just be an educated guess

Very well done thanks!
Glad you liked it! Thank you kindly!

🎉nice to see you back in your shop! I’ll be watching this restoration tonight when I get home but so far it looks great. So happy you are back. 😊
Awesome, that sounds great Kathy. I'm happy to see your excitement. Thank you kindly! Cheers!
Parabéns, excelente trabalho de restauração. 👏👏👏👍👍👍🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷

Thanks a lot for new video
Greetings from México !!
My pleasure! Thank you kindly 👋😀
I loved watching this project. Nicely done. Just one little remark: the line in the handle you welded as shown in 28:50 was original. It must me a kind of marker or indicator that lies in line with the saw blade. My saw has exactly the same. ;-)
Exelente trabajo
👋😃
Found your channel about a week ago and I love watching your videos. It’s so calming and interesting and you do fantastic work. I am also really digging your hats you wear, as I myself am also a flat cap/newsboy type hat wearer. Would you mind sharing where you get your hats or maybe doing a period wardrobe video in the future? Keep up the good work!
Hey Spencer! Thank you so much and welcome onboard sir! You are very kind 🙏
That is cool, there is no specific place that I have for acquiring clothing. It is basically whenever I come across some piece I buy it. That can be on a garage sale, second hand store, through some friends and family and so on. All the clothing that I gathered is in a period of six years. I'm planning to write a blog post about the clothing in my shop. Not a video as you hoped, but it will still give a better understanding of clothes and hats that I wear in my videos. Stay safe, cheers!
@@FFD_Restorations Thank you for the reply, good sir! I appreciate the explanation and look forward to reading your blog post once it's completed.
The Norwegian Olympic Committee should send its athletes who need to build strength in their hands, arms and/or legs, to apprentice for you in your workshop. They would be unbeatable after just a few months.

Correct, congratulations 😊.
I am contemplating a purchase of a particular tool of this type for our apartment, only of much more modern manufacture. Same arrangement, but all metal, not as good as Ulmia. Well done! If the block on the end of your stop rod was not "shouldered", but rather a simple rectangular block, then you would be able to reverse it and extend it far out to function cutting long stock to length, as well!
I also am very intrigued to see your workbench. I have seen many of Northern continental design with this basic arrangement, but yours in particular has some very interesting variations that I have not seen, and seem quite sensible in their way. For example, the narrow depth can be a better fit in a small area, and yet it still affords a tool well. The tail vise with its dog holes also is intriguing, so narrow and economical. All the best!
Cool, yes that is a great tip. I haven't thought about that. It is easy to make a new block 😉
I mentioned the workbench in a post a few years back ruclips.net/user/postUgyVpZDfIttCaDo5aJR4AaABCQ?si=GvSA7hBSTOQ-u1Q2
Cheers
Nice 😊
Thanks 😊
Great job. I just subscribed. 🤠
Awesome, thank you kindly and welcome aboard! Cheers!
Buen trabajo.
😃👍
Thank
Used one in university shop in old university in Detroit. It was rat holed away when I found it. The school was founded in 1868. The saw I believe was from 30’s mostly cast and steel but table for work pieces was hardwood. It was in good shape but dirty loose etc.. Had a nice saw with it that I sent out to be sharpened. The brand was Millers Falls. Still there and the guys and myself would use it for framing maps ( campus) and other little jobs in shop.
Wow, sounds like an amazing discovery. Millers Falls makes very quality and fine tools that can last for centuries. So happy to hear that it is still in use and that brings joy to you all there! Thanks for sharing, amazing story 👌😃👍
Well, one of the things I've learned here is why cold blued metals need to soak in oil, once you've coated them. Hope someone passes it on to our guy here.
✌👍💪
😀👍
👍👍👍
when using treadle and velocipede lathes you should use hss. its time appropriate and are much better suited to lower rpm machines (better surface finish and much less brittle)
That is a great tip, thank you so much 🙏
Do you recommend some place where I can order some or should I make my own? Thanks again for the help 😀👍
Search auction portals for HSS blanks
These are rods that you can grind into the appropriate geometry of a lathe blade, or into the appropriate shape for turning
Cold Blue adds color, but no protection from oxidation. It is usually recommended to apply cold blue, then soak overnight in some sort of oil to add protection. However, cold blue is never as useful as some hot blue process. I enjoyed seeing you restore using period tools and methods, however, you make a lot of work for yourself. The finished product is exceptional and all that manual labor paid off, I suppose. No electricity, no power tools or modern methods. Congrats.
That is true! Thanks for the tip! I did it again in my new video with instructions you provided and got a much better result 👌
I know, but that is the best way of learning. You make a mistake, you learn. I rarely repeat mistakes 😅 Best wishes from Norway!
I have a modern version of this miter saw. It allows me to cut any miter to any angle needed. But the one I have is not the lovely piece this is.

you should use diesel for cleaning so you avoid scratches

what is the name of instrument and where it is being used? Nice work done by you.
This is a mitre saw and it is used in woodworking shops to cut wood in desired length.
Thank you kindly!
