  • Rusty Giant Lock Restoration
In this video I restore an giant lock. This lock belongs to my friend. He asked me to restore this lock. I was surprised to see the size of the lock. I hope you have never seen such a lock. On this lock there is a picture of King Shah Jahan.
I began the restoration work by disassembling all parts of the lock.I used vinegar to remove the rust from the lock parts. It can take a long time to remove rust with vinegar, so I added electricity. Then after 12 hours I removed all the lock parts from the vinegar and washed them. A lot of the rust was gone. After that cleaned all the parts with a wire brush. After that I started working on the front part of the lock. On the front side of this plate I sanded with a 120 grit angel grinder and then started hand sanding, 220, 320, 400, 600 & 1000 grit. After that, the plate was buffed and cold bluing was done on the back side of the plate. After that I started working on the back side of the lock. The back side of the lock was not welded properly. I repaired the welding. Apply the cold bluing the back side of the lock. Had quite a few dents on the hanging parts of the lock, filled them and hand sanded and buffed them. The key to the lock was not neatly made either. Repaired and buffed the key.Screws were used instead of revits to attach the lock which was not correct. So I made five new rivets. After restoring all the parts, assembled the lock.
Work I do in the video and what I use . If you want to ask any question, please ask in the comment section. I read everyone's comments and try to answer.

Great job I really like this one! Thank you for doing what so many others fail to do and that is protect our eyes as you tough up and fix those welds!

such a strange and interesting piece.. on the one hand it looks so grand and special...but then.. it has the most comically simple internal locking system.. its quite odd really if you think about it... but if it works.. it works... a kind of smoke and mirrors of the locksmiths world.. much love xxc

The padlock will not be 100's of years old, due to the somewhat crude method of manufacturing. It is not forge welded, but is electric arc welded. Most antique Asian padlocks were made from brass or alloys, not steel plate. The restoration as such, has improved the padlocks appearance, well done 👍

That lock is not from the 1600s. In the 1600s a lock that size would have been both better fettled and dressed, and would lack indications of modern tools like mechanized saws or flame cutting, and what appeared to be seal bearings and basic modern steel and not wrought iron.... and that spring is modern. So, a faked 'old' lock. Probably made in India and soaked in vinegar.

I think this is a modern reproduction rather than a genuine antique. The internal mechanism looks too simplistic, especially with the factory-made compression spring-historical locks, especially from the Mughal era, typically had more intricate handcrafted mechanisms. The machine-cut threads and welded joints also suggest modern manufacturing, as true antiques would have used rivets or hand-forged components. Even the metal plates look like they were stamped or pressed rather than cast or hand-chiseled. It’s a cool piece, but if it’s being sold or displayed as an original, I’d definitely question its authenticity.

Plate steel, arc welded, I’d guess 1940’s or newer probably newer since the pitting isn’t bad at all.
