  • I hear a lot of people saying don't use a certain operating system because it's going to make your computer slow. Like having Windows 11 on a Celeron n3450. Or something along that line. Today I'm going to test out a whole bunch of operating systems to see if that's actually true.
The whole specs list of this computer is:
Cases- Dell Inspiron case, eMachine case.
Motherboards- Dell Inspiron LGA 1155 motherboard, eMachine AM2 motherboard.
CPUs- Intel Celeron G470, AMD Athlon LE-1640
    CPU Coolers- Stock.
    RAM- 4 GB DDR3, 2 GB DDR2.
    GPU- Nvidia Quadro 600.
Boot drive- Hitachi 160 GB HDD, 7,200 RPM.
    Operating Systems Tested:
    Windows 11 Pro
    Windows 11 SuperLite
    Windows 10 Pro
    Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC
    Windows 8.1
    Linux Ubuntu Mate
    Linux Lite

In Linux Lite, you were in the tool that configures which repositories you want to use for updates but that tool does not actually perform software updates. The operating system and app update tool is a different tool. I don't have a similar Linux installed in front of me so I cannot reference the exact app names but that is why you saw that updates were needed but could not find the updates. Sometimes you can click on the icon on the dock at the bottom and it will launch the update tool but since I haven't used Linux Lite I do not know specifically if that works there. The command line terminal way to update software is 'sudo apt update' and 'sudo apt upgrade'.

Interesting. It would be nice if Linux also had just a update button, so you don't have to go through the command prompt to do it. I know the Linux command prompt isn't "scary", but still annoying for someone like me who doesn't like dealing with typing in commands.
Also, what Linux OS do you recommend for a slow computer like this? Some people told me the ones I tested are junk, and to use Pop! OS, and others said the same about Pop OS. So no one seems to agree on a good one. There is like 8 different ones getting recommended to try.
It also has to be user friendly, sort of like Windows.
I would have tested Linux Tiny Core (which would likely have won), but it is confusing, and I don't know what to do in it.

@@digitaljon1109 Simplicity is a good starting point. Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Lubuntu are good for low resources and keeping things uniformly simple. Xubuntu probably has the least requirements because of the Xfce interface. I am currently typing this in Kubuntu using the Opera browser that I installed after installation. The "update button" on KDE is called Discover which is the software center app. You can find new apps and upgrade existing apps and the operating system in this tool. Most flavors of Linux distribution have their own idea of what an app might look like. Gnome has probably gone the farthest at standardizing what that looks like. KDE has been around forever and is equally strong at keeping things the same across distributions. I think you just happened to install a desktop environment (Mate) that is younger and more innovative in its usage because people got tired of the same boring Gnome and KDE interfaces. Once you use one of the desktop environments long enough the rest fall into place and you can figure it out. There is a learning curve. 99% of what I do these days happens on a Linux box. My Kubuntu is running in a VM on my Mac Ventura. I also use Rocky and Alma and Manjaro for different things and just testing apps or work stuff. Kubuntu is stable so I default back to it most of the time.

@@jmanrunner1 The main thing I don't get about Linux is, it has less support, stuff often doesn't just work, and it performs the same. Why do a lot of people choose to use it, instead of a OS that will almost work flawlessly every tine?

@@digitaljon1109 Live long enough and you get burned by Windows and Apple and Solaris and AIX and OS/2 and Amiga and Commodore and Atari and Texas Instruments and Coleco and and and. Nothing goes on forever. Except Linux. Even that isn't true as Linux has deprecated 32-bit stuff these days. Linux is at least portable across many hardware platforms. Plus when you really want something the source code is usually available and you can compile it yourself. I am not advocating Consumer grade Linux here, this is clearly specialized use cases. Linux runs on more hardware in the world than all other operating systems combined. Think of the virtualized servers and databases running in all the cloud environments. Kubernetes is basically Linux. Linux is embedded in devices. It just is so flexible but at the same time user friendly is elusive. I got tired of paying the Apple tax and being forced to upgrade to stay compatible with applications. That is why I use Linux.

I honestly think it's not anything to do with the OS, but with what runs in the background. Fun fact: Linux uses fewer resources such as RAM, CPU, and storage than Windows, because it has a lightweight kernel, lacks too many background-running processes, and lacks bloatware applications. As windows tend to have a heavy kernel, many background processes, and a couple of bloatware applications, it tends to consume more resources to support these services. So if you are focused on running applications seamlessly without any hurdles, Linux provides faster execution of programs because resources are always available for such user programs. Besides, Linux ensures that your served applications have a high uptime guarantee even with fewer server resources, which now marks linux as the top OS to Windows. If you think I'm lying, try running Pop OS on your pc.

Is it possible to add Windows 7 to the comparison?
Then I think the data of Windows LTSC is really strange, how could it be?

    • @digitaljon1109
      @digitaljon1109  Год назад

I can't add Windows 7 to this list, as the video is already edited, and posted. But I purposely didn't add Windows 7, since it is quite outdated at this point. I wanted to just test the modern OS's.
Now for Linux, I am unsure if the 2 OS's I tested are old or not. I didn't research there age. People just told me to test them.
Also I thought the data for Windows 10 LTSC to be strange too, as someone I know on Discord tried it, and had better results.
I tested Windows 10 LTSC twice. Once I installed it, and the CPU usage, and RAM usage at idle (nothing open for about 15 minutes after a restart, with Task Manager open, but as small as possible with the CPU/RAM usage still visible). And it was about the same. I did reinstall it the 1st time due to it was failing to do Windows updates. The 2nd time I installed it, it updated correctly. But performed the same.
I am unsure how to make the test more accurate than I did, as I am not a software developer of any sort, who would know how this works. I am just a slightly above average Windows user. Like, not like a mom who asks how to install a program, a step above that. But I did my best to keep the tests as cookie cutter as possible.
I also disabled Windows updates (I should say I extended how long before it checks for updates), so it wasn't looking for updates when Windows was restarted. Nothing was in the system start up to be running either, and I uninstalled everything extra that came with the Windows OS I was using.
The only OS's I didn't uninstall stuff on is Windows 8.1, as I couldn't work out how. And the 2 Linux OS's, for the same reason, plus on Linux I don't know what is needed, and uneeded.

    • @Hot_YUser

@@digitaljon1109 I still hope you can do a video comparing Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows LTSB 2015, LTSB 2016, LTSC 2019, LTSC 2021, which are more traditional Windows. Because even though it is not modern, there are still many people like it, like me.
The reason for adding Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 is that these two operating systems are between the traditional Win32 and the current UWP, and they have amazing smoothness of operation, so they are worth comparing together.
And comparing multiple LTCB(C) versions at a time is to avoid specific problems of a certain operating system version, otherwise I still don't think LTSC will lose.
