This game is ironic in that, in the poem, Dante is rarely in actual danger with Virgil guiding him, and Beatrice sending an angel at one point. Dante is kind of like a tourist and reporter for the afterlife and the universe.
Creature with the tentacle is Minos, the judge of the damned. He coils his tentacle around himself and the number of coils determines which circle of hell the soul will be sent to.
Yeah, this type of design were the game is really short but it kills you at any minor mistake was very common of 8-bit computer games. This one is actually much better than I expected, will have to give it a try.
Wow--I was quite uncertain of what this game might be, and very curious (for which reason I'm very glad that it was chosen), but I was not expecting something like this! This game is actually rather clever, I think! The challenges seem quite thoughtfully adapted from the source material, and in places quite intelligent. Even the screen-looping keeps things feeling expansive while nevertheless being navigably small, and is used in at least one rather neat puzzle solution (the dogs). Overall, I'm quite impressed! ^_^
Koei (the Dynasty Warriors/various hardcore Japanese strategy games dev) released a game called Tamashii no Mon: Dante no Shinkyoku Yori, an adaption of the Divine Comedy that plays closer to a sidescrolling platform adventure game. Much better graphics too.
Is the music based on "Wachet Auf" by Bach? It sounds so similar to Kenny Everett's mime music, Sam Spence's "Fredericus Rex Favorite", which was very "electropop", and based on the same composition.
Dis is spelled "Dite" in Italian and would actually be pronounced something like "Dee-tuh" but I don't know if Dis keeps that pronunciation or not. Maybe something similar to Deetz would be my best guess.
The Remember logo is an homage to the Fairlight crack screens of the time. I like the classical music, but it does sound sped up. A C64 game with great sounding classical music that comes to mind is White Viper... but, that's not a fun game. This is interesting with good graphics, but looks very unforgiving... like White Viper. :-/
I read the books years ago. Pretty good representation. It does miss Dante's pettiness throughout. One objection though. Said something about an epic confrontation with lucifer? No... Not in the book, it's an anti climax
Since I'm in NTSC-Land I run everything in NTSC unless it encounters problems or I know ahead of time it was never released here, in which case I'll scale back to PAL. :B
@@Pixelmusement If I'm not mistaken isn't the majority of game software for C64 designed for PAL due to it being for more popular outside of N. America? I mean I don't like 50hz slowdown either since grew up with 60hz, but if the game is designed for PAL it seems like the best experience would be had by emulating PAL?
@@Pixelmusementhonestly I think that in c64 land, that's the wrong way up to do things - since most games were pal, and the major download sites are pal focused, it makes sense to default to pal even in the USA unless you know a game is NTSC by default (usually meaning is either really early, or ea/epyx/origin)
@@lupinzar Maybe maybe not? The problem is that I am unfamiliar with these games entirely before I play them so unless there's a dead-giveaway I have no way of knowing which market the game was intended for, not to mention, if it was released in BOTH I almost always have no way of knowing which market my copy came from since I'm just pulling them from a massive archive. That said, I'm OK with this approach for NNRG because the show is meant to be quick and dirty, whereas I try really hard to get legitimate copies of games for ADG so that those videos can be done properly and with proper attention to detail. :B
The dead pan/unintentional delivery of "That red fish might be a red herring" was masterful.
You got the "unintentional" part wrong. ;)
@@Pixelmusement My bad. Your delivery was so smooth I couldn't tell.

Yep! Fear and Loathing in Hell

Dante's Disco Inferno
What a surprising amount of death scenes for a short game like this
This game was totally disturbing as a kid. The eerie Music, the imminent death lurking around every corner etc.
Having to restart every time you die really sucks.
I have been to hell and I can attest that this is indeed how it is
Were you smoking pcp like the devs of this game?

Allmost all the music in the game is Bach but one piece (Bourrée 1)is played both backward and forward.
So there are 2 games based off that poem? Never knew that.
Same.
More than 2 actually. :P
There are many more!

I've since been informed by someone far more knowledgeable on the subject than I am that it's pronounced like the word "dish" just without the h. :B

19:13 -- "Once you know what's going on, you're heck of a lot better off!"
Timeless wisdom of Internet people.
You actually only was about halfway through the game.
Yep, and it only took about five minutes to get there from the start once I knew how! :P
Sorry, It's just that it sounded like you thought medusa was the last point of the game :)
now try koei's dante inferno

I actually thought that was one of the more interesting games
Guess I'm gonna have to be the guy that says it. Not quite as epic as the Visceral Games version.
Wow, this looks absolutely infuriating. This is bordering on 'troll game' territory.
At least each run goes REALLY fast. Even my final run got about halfway through the game and only took about five minutes. :B
But it was interesting and you wanted to keep playing to see what crazy thing was next. I loved this when I was a kid.
Pure annoyance
Agreed
one hit kills not good in games
