That trick is called opening sideborders. It's done by carefully, like cpu cycle exact carefully, modifying the vertical or horizotal scroll register values in order to trick the VICII chip into not drawing the borders. The resulting area can be used to display sprites only, character mode remains limited to the usual area.
I didn't pay any attention to the thumbnail, and so was absolutely expecting this to be something like Commando. I definitely was not expecting rock climbing.
3:20 There's a trick involving very careful timing that fools the VIC (graphics) chip into missing where it should start drawing the borders, so it never does. And the thing is that even in the border areas, the VIC is still doing the work needed to draw the background and sprites; it's just that the background is garbage by default and very difficult to really use, although it can be made "invisible". These "full screen" demos then use the still-working sprites in the border areas to fake the appearance of a full-screen background.
Yes, watch the SEGA logo defy the border boundaries in the Turbo Outrun intro! It slides up from the nether-regions, just to the right of the US Gold logo. Perhaps the same thing is going on there.
I played the ZX Spectrum version back in the day, and I was quite intrigued by it, especially discovering all the different mechanics. I'm quite sure you can secure your body while climbing so you can access the backpack. I also remember the music sounding a little better in the Spectrum, with nostalgic vibe I liked
Yeah, there's a TON of equipment in the game and I didn't really feel like reading the manual for hours on end learning every little nuance. Suffice to say, you can get REALLY stuck into this game! :B
Some good music in this one. Yes I know the intro music is FF but it still sounds good, and I liked the ambient tones in the menu. Wish they would have added some type of music during the gameplay (unless I missed something). So I guess I enjoyed the non-gameplay segments the most, lol.
Upon reading the title (so, yeah, without looking at the thumbnail in that sense.), I was like: "Wait, did the Atari 5200 game get a C64 version as well?", but turned out I mistook this game with Final Legacy. (As for how I know about FL? It's thanks to the Atari Vault DLC that also adds Atari 5200 games to the library - when both were still available on Steam.) That aside, yeah, I'd take *this* over Extreme Rock Climbing, no matter the complexity.
there was a mountain climbing game i played back in the day, i think it was on a ibm pc jr? but i think it was either math game or typing game, and the more questions u get right, the higher you climb. i been looking 20 years for that game hahah
...wait... are you in Canada? That might've actually been an ICON game, not a PC game, in which case... good freaking luck finding it. Once the ICON Computers program came to a close in the Ontario school system, ALL hardware and software was set to be destroyed, thus few examples of any of it still exist. :(
@ nope. USA, i remember too, there was an elephant spelling game on a circus where you walked across a tight rope. it took me ages to even find bouncy bee learns letters
If they gave you a game disk in game why don't they give you an 80s portable computer to play it on? Edit: Also who are we assaulting? Or are we bringing supplies to mountain outposts to aid them in repelling someone's final assault?

Interesting... Probably also requires insanely precise timing to cover the ENTIRE screen. :B

You didn't fall off the mountain and die, the visuals combined with the music always disturbed me.
I did while testing and decided maybe I shouldn't demonstrate that in the video... :P
So of course I tried searching for this footage, but nothing came up...
Crampons are the spikes on the shoes
2:42 The ZX Spectrum also shows a border, and it's not supposed to be possible to “draw” there. It's used to indicate the tape is being loaded.
your transformation into an american hero from playing this european game is truly inspiring
The graphics in this game are wonderful, I love the details in the animation of the character

When that Nostalgia SID awesomeness hits my eardrums 😍 arpeggio heaven

Death Wish 47: Final Assault.

Really clever timing of switching the border colour?
No dry socks might not be a good idea.
Kris my man, what ARE we gonna do with you? LOL
Send me in a time machine back to 97,454,110 BC to feed me to a hungry Carcharodontosaurus? I dunno. :P
I don't care very much for that anthem being played. It must be chosen by player

This game raises so many questions... :P
First! Love your videos!
Congrats on being first! The prize this time around is SEARING RETINA PAIN IF YOU CONTINUE TO STARE AT YOUR MONITOR FOR 15 MORE SECONDS!! D8
@ hahaha nice one!
Why does this guy look like Pee Wee Herman trying to climb a mountain?
This game looks very repetitive.
