3 things everybody does not know or forget: 1. The 15 round championship distance still existed and was lowered by Ray's request. 2. 10 Oz. Gloves were used instead of usual 8oz at Ray's request. 3. Largest ring possible at Ray's request. Look it up.

Love both of these guys, I assume that Hagler agreed to all the terms of the fight so this is totally non issue. The biggest winner were the fans of two of the greatest boxers in the history of the sport.

Yup, and not only that. Sugar said it himself, I couldn't out right beat him! He went on to explain that he could only win by points. So he would through a barrage of punches while rushing into Hagler to tie him up so he wouldn't get hit. It was that bastard that ruined boxing and made it the clown shit how that it is today. To date, Hagler is the BEST middleweight of all time!

Sugar Ray won the fight. I've watched it, at least 10 times. Close fight, but he deserved the victory. I think Hagler's corner hurt him by not pressing him harder. They acted like it was a walk in the park. Dundee > GP/PP, probably the difference.

I won’t lie, I’m a sugar Ray fan, but he won this fight. Did he dominate Hagler? No! But he was smart, new when to flurry and out boxed him. Tremendous effort!

Ironically, these are the two decisions that were the most controversial. You don't have the Willie Monroe fight, that most people do think he lost. However he knocked out Watts and Monroe twice after that.

King Marvin …..l wonder if anyone has either or both of the Marvin v Kevin Finneghan fights on video …both fights were in 1978 and both were similar results with Kevin stopped on cuts but in both fights Kevin was coming on strongly….Marvin gave away the first 4 rounds against Leonard but then chased the sugar man around the ring for the other 8 rounds …

Hagler probably the toughest fighter of his generation. Coupled with his awkward style of head down & dive in first. Undoubtedly both legends; for me Leonard just did enough to shade it. For all his brutal ability Hagler devote's note he was not able to stop or nock Leonard down wich was the differance in the end for me. Two of the very best ever with out a doubt.

That was Sugar Rays CHEAPEST AND WORST FIGHT EVER! Why? Because he cheated! He would throw a punch or a barrage, rush forward and tie up Hagler so he wouldn't get hit. Then, he would let go before the ref could break them, and throw a punch. Since when is holding boxing. It was the stupidest and most frustrating boxing match I have ever seen. Hagler felt so fkn robbed, and rightly so, that he never fought again. Sugar requested 12 rounds when they used to fight 15 because he knew he wouldn't last, he had the gloves increased in oz from 8 to 10 so he wouldn't get knocked out, he had the ring size increased because he knew he would need to run away. Everything that is wrong with boxing today came from that fight and as a result of Sugar Ray. Pathetic.

Totally Agree. The money men in boxing didn't like hagler for some reason. The judges didn't either. He didn't get the respect he was due or deserved. As for Leonard... He was the promoters favourite because he created more box office. Leonard lost to Hearns in the second fight too, even though it was called a draw. Everyone knows hearns won that fight. As far as I'm concerned Hagler did not lose any fights, he was robbed.
Not my favourite fighter from this era but he was the best and from memory I don’t even think he was ever knocked down but if only Hearns hadn’t broken his hand on Hagler’s head.

Hagler also lost to Willie Monroe early in his career. So, he actually had three losses.

Just for folks to consider, Leonard was out of boxing for several years. He comes back to fight Marvin. Leonard was a welterweight but in the fight he is significantly larger than Marvin. Marvin was a shorter, thick legitimate middleweight, 160lbs. How did Leonard get so big? Its the same time as Ben Johnson and Barry Bonds are using HGH, which was undetectable at that time. Leonard is clearly the larger fighter, that didnt happen by accident. HGH had the effect of making people stronger and able to recover faster.
Lol, you are talking nonsense! Leonard was clearly the smaller man & (as far as we know) never took performance enhancing drugs. Leonard, was & always has been, a career natural welterweight. You are right to call Hagler ‘thick’ set (perhaps another reason why he was so sturdy). However, not all the former welterweights that Hagler fought looked smaller than him - just look up the Hagler vs Hearns fight (Hearns looked huge, compared to Hagler, in that fight but lost badly by third round KO).

Hagler was arguably the best pound for pound fighter ever! He was robbed on both these loses.
I watched the fight again this dawn. I am a HUGE Hagler fan however he lost at least 7 rounds to SLL. He gave away the first two fighting with a conventional right-handed stance instead of his normal southpaw stance. In essence he gave away the fight. If he carried one of those two rounds, he gets a draw at least.
With that said, if we go by the old-time convention of you need to clearly and convincingly beat a champion to take his crown, a draw would have been an acceptable result and cued a rematch.
However, SLL definitely did not lose that fight, sorry.

@@denisfarrell164 what I don't understand about this fight is how everyone involved let Leonard get away with all the unprofessional antics he displayed that night , those array of soft pitty pats he administered ten seconds before the round would finish , and he did this more than once, I feel as though that one judge sold out , and so many infractions that the referee let pass , low blows, holding , hitting after the bell , I mean Leonard got away with murder that night , referee Richard Steele was even asked that night after the fight that why didn't he substract points , and you know what he said , that no one complained about it! 😳 , a referee that's known to stop fights for bleeding , head butting , and yes for low blows , what the hell happened that night with Richard Steele , was he caught up with this circus farce and turned into a sheep spectator with the fans ? , I strongly believe that Hagler had his hands full that night , not only was he fighting Leonard , he was also fighting that one corrupted judge the referee and the officials, powers that be , that are behind and run the boxing commission at Caesars palace , even the majority of the patrons were against Hagler and I'd bet that they weren't even boxing fans , just there being part of the circus and following the cheers wanting to be part of something that they knew nothing about , what a shameful sad night it was for boxing, for Hagler and for the real fans of prize fighting

I have watched it a few times and I have a boxing judges licence in Melbourne Australia. I have always scored it close. Once I scored a draw. Once Hagler 7 to 5 and once SRL 7 to 5.
@@danthaman03 which means at best it was a draw. as the champ you should be definitively beat. not run the entire round until the final 30 second throw a flurry and expect to get the round. it was a robbery
@@mattburton3233 the winner of the most rounds wins the fight. And the one who lands most scoring punches wins the round. Unfortunately in this case the judges may have swayed by the fact that SRL closed the round with a flurry.
It could have gone either way. Like I said it was on my scorecard close all 3 times I watched it. One must score it with no bias which isn't easy. One may not want to see the champ lose when its close but you have to score each round as you see it with no consideration as to who won the previous rounds or any sentiment.
The Hagler/Sugar Ray fight was a fix worthy of the Mafia. It's why I stopped watching pro boxing.
The WBC and corrupt Jose Sulaiman loved Leonard. Set up all the way. The one judge Jo Jo Guerra who gave almost all the rounds to Leonard disappeared right after the fight but eventually was again judging WBC fights. Leonard was a very good, not great In the history of boxing, but very good WW. He lost to Hagler. It also looked like Marvin was sometimes pulling his punches. The entire fight was fishy

Hagler was a magnificent middleweight that stayed in his comfort zone . As great as he was, he never went up in weight to challenge saad muhammid. Surgar ray leonard ,hearns duran and benitez all fought successfully at different weights out of their comfort zone. Hagler should have been able blast leonard out in 7 rounds,it was his territory comfort zone . Leonard is like an SAS special forces solider . The thinking solider leonards the thinking boxing. Leonard brain and super fast hands beat haglers brute force . Brain beat brawn.well done SRL

Marvelous Marvin Hagler was, as someone else pointed out earlier, the perfect middleweight champ. Carlos Monzon is Hagler’s only real rival as supreme middleweight in the annals of the division.

I watched this fight live it was back when u cud only see these fights in a bar ppv. I remember thinking at the time "these corrupt clowns are gonna give this to Leonard." Leonard, ultimate media darling paper tiger.

Cuz he clearly knew he had won and thought Leonard constantly tying him up was a cowards way to try and win a fight via points. If the refs, judges and circuits are going to vote that way, then I'm no longer fighting, cuz that's not fight. That is what he had expressed.
I’m sure I’m in the minority but I always thought Duran beat him in their fight and also Vito Antuofremo beat him in their first fight which was Haglers first shot at the middleweight title and was ruled a draw!

I kinda understand with what you are pointing to. Personally, I don’t believe neither Antuofermo nor Duran beat Hagler. However, I’ll just touch on two points:
(1) During the Hagler vs Antuofermo fight 1, Hagler’s stamina & punch output faded along the stretch, while Antuofermo ‘came on’ (esp during the last rounds of that 15 round fight).
(2) During the Hagler vs Duran, Duran won many of the early rounds & fought Hagler ‘right down to the wire’ during much of that fight. This time, Hagler had to come on strong to pull out the last 2 or 3 rounds of that 15 round fight.
In conclusion, both Hagler vs Antuofermo 1 and Hagler vs Duran were VERY CLOSE fights.
@@arjunakorale6166 Very good analysis from what I remember from both these fights. I would like to watch them both again sometime. Also remember Antuofremo had the advantage of being the champion in their fight. The champion only has to defend his title, the challenger has to defeat him!

@@mariohernandezmartinez9328 when fight finished , Leonard got to his training room , went in and collapsed on floor , his handlers had to call for an ambulance to take him to hospital and though Leonard landed some good blows , the majority were soft punches , 10 seconds before round would end .... what a shame , and what's more embarrassing was that the officials let it count, favoring Leonard

Fact ... also when he fought Duran , Hagler had few bruises on his face , but the inside of Duran's mouth was busted , after fight he went in his training room with pain and bleeding to his gums .... And though he loved to eat , he couldn't eat anything solid for two weeks

Interesting video but the first guy who beat Marvelous (and beat him up good) is not here - Willie Monroe moved a little like Leonard but hit much harder & had a harder left jab & right uppercut/cross than Leonard. Willie was a GENUINE MIDDLEWEIGHT, unlike Leonard. Also, Boogaloo Watts never really beat Hagler & was given a gift decision in their first fight. Only two guys who truly beat Marvelous were Monroe & Leonard.

Great fight but I didnt think hagler won. Leonards brain best haglers brawn. Fighters should win and loose gracefully. Hagler and Deonty wilder both great fighters and magnificent moaners . Hearns holyfield and leonard all lost in the past gracefully .
