Waterslide Decals are used a lot for Lego Star Wars custom minifigures. I've been trying to make one for a while now and this is just the video I needed. Thank you for giving me a simple explanation on how to do this.
thanks for the awesome video. my questions: 1: is het it safe to drink from, because it's a mug and you would like to use it for the intended puprose? 2: is it dishwasher safe, or even safe when cleaning it by hand?
It is safe to drink from. We recommend sealing any decal like this. Waterslide, Viny, print then cut, etc. For this one I would recommend using Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge :) Then it will be dishwasher safe after it cures!
TIP: mirror print your image (only really necessary for designs with letters or numbers) then after soaking in water, place the decal FACE DOWN onto your project and the paper will slide right off of the decal with ease!! 😉
@@pinkmosquito22 ok thanks! i guess too that the step could be skipped to "urethane" what was printed as it would be sealed?. i do plan on sealing the entire project once done anyways
Not sure it this has been answered yet but what is the best thing to use to seal the Waterslide AFTER you have applied it onto the mug, plate etc. Can you use the sealant spray again? Will it be dishwasher safe?
Hello! So always seal the decals themselves before you cut them, and if you want to seal them afterwards on a mug, this is how we recommend to do so :) ruclips.net/video/rRiSVUhEUa8/видео.html

I have a few questions if anyone would have time to answer. I placed three coats of Krylon triple thick clear glaze, 30 min apart, on the water slide, placed it on a ceramic mug and it looks great. What do I do to keep it that way? I want to place it in the oven as another commenter said she does. Do I spray it again before I bake it? Just over the water slide or the entire cup? If I should spray it, how long should I wait until baking it? I know that’s a lot of questions but newbie here!
We do not bake ours. We simply let the waterslide paper dry, then add a sealer on it like dishwasher safe mod podge or epoxy :) Maybe someone else can give you advice on baking it! Good luck!
If you seal it properly after applying it to the mug you don't need to bake it :) We recommend several layers of Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge: amzn.to/354190H
Thank you thank you thank you for showing the blur effect thing. I was trying to print a decal for a tumbler and it had a blurred line around the whole thing that was not there in the original picture. If you used the same sealer we did you should not have had this issue. The decal should only be in the water a short amount of time. Maybe it's your paper brand?
Newbie here. I hope you can help me out. I'm trying to make a waterslide on my Ex Air 2. I did a practice on just a sheet of paper and all worked fine. But when I print the same exact picture on waterslide and go to cut I keep getting an error that it can not find the cut lines. Its not a big deal cause I can cut it out but if i want to do an exact cut in the future I wanna know how to fix it.
Hello!!! Great question!! This is most likely because you have so many coats of your sealer on there that the machine is having a hard time reading the registration marks. There are several things you can try to combat this. 1) try turning the lights off in your craft room. Glare from other lights makes it harder for the Cricut to read the registration marks. 2) Use satin or matte finish sealer next time, as they cause less glare than glossy and usually you'll have more success with the machine being able to read the registration marks. 3) You can use a gentle tape like masking, painters, or washi tape to cover the registration marks before you seal them and then remove the tape before cutting, so the Cricut will have ease reading the registration marks. Hope this helps!!
Hi! Thank you for the tutorial! Is the 28-day cure time only if we use mod podge to seal? What if we use polyurethane to seal the mug? Can we use it in the microwave sooner?
Do I understand correctly that I don’t need to do the Minwax (or other brand) sealed on the pronged design if I print on a laser printer? Of course I’m using the water slide paper for laser printers.
We place it on a plastic bottle and it was great but When it dry we could just take it right off. What do we do to make it stay on the bottle for a long time?
I brought waterslide decal but on the instructions it says to bake is that necessary? Also can i use krylon crystal clear acrylic coating to spray decal?
You can, and it depends on what color the chargers are! If they're dark, you wouldn't be able to see your ink on the clear backing, but if you're putting it on a white/cream charger you can use the clear waterslide paper.
Have you ever had a problem with the spin it water slide paper turning yellow after the epoxy is put on and dries I don’t know if I’m doing something wrong?
So, you'll need to seal these and let them cure for the recommended cure time which can be lengthy, but necessary if you want a good cup that lasts, sealing is the best option :) We would recommend this process: ruclips.net/video/rRiSVUhEUa8/видео.html
You need to use a satin poly spray on your waterslide decals. Same thing happened to us! If you use gloss the cricut cannot recognize the registration marks!

Thanks for the video, I have an Epson Workforce 3734 can I print waterslide decal with that? Also is the spray important before decal going on the water? Please help, I just received my paper
Any Inkjet paper will work great :) The spray is very important! Make sure to add several (5-7) coats of the spray polyurethane, and the best kind to use is clear satin, not clear gloss! The gloss can confuse your Cricut and sometimes it wont scan and register the registration marks correctly. Good Luck!
Sorry for the Newbie question, but I couldn't quite understand what you meant by moving the "stars" over a little bit on your Cricut before you printed your image. What are "stars" on your machine ?
the "stars" are the little white rollers that you see on the bar of your Cricut. They are easily slid to the side so that they do not smear the ink or make marks on your decal.
Hi!! I’m trying to water slide on a wine glass but I cannot cut in between the photo and I’m left with a circle or a square around the actually picture.. Do I need a different blade like a deep blade or is it another way to avoid the circle around the pic?
The circle comes from the file in Design Space and how you imported it, it has nothing to do with your blade. When importing a PNG, you'll go through a process in which you can clean up the image. During that stage, you can select and erase the parts you don't want, so you can eliminate that boarder :)
So Love this video! Made me really go out and buy this paper and try it. Seemed like it was going well BUT when I transferred my image it was very see through 😆 any tips on how to get it less see through?
Putting on card stock setting for some reason doesn’t work for my cricut it would never read the lines. I have to change my settings to custom to printable vinyl so it doesn’t cut through the backing like yours did. I wish I could get it right. I have wasted many many waterslide papers
Hello! So the material you choose will have no effect on the Cricut being able to read the registration marks... Make sure to use matte spray and not glossy, or apply some washi tape to the registration marks before sealing, then removing the tape before cutting. This is because the sealer can sometimes be too shiny on the paper then the machine has a hard time reading the lines. Good Luck! Also, try the "kraft board" setting :)
If you want your waterslide decal to show up, yes. But this brand also has white waterslide paper, so you can place that product on dark colored mugs, etc. amzn.to/3hXlNpt
When I go to cut my waterslide paper on my circuit, I keep getting error that the machine cannot read the image, even though the black lines are visible. Can you please tell me what I am doing wrong. Is there a setting for waterslide on the machine. Thanks for your support.
You have to add the Waterslide setting manually to your machine. I encountered this same issue before on another project when my registration marks for one image were to close to the marks for another image on the vinyl I was using. What I did was put a piece of paper over the image I didn't want it to cut so that the cricut was only reading the marks for the image I was working on.
Does anybody know if both styles of cricut, the maker or the air 2, can do this? Cut out the waterslide from the image I print on the special paper I mean. I'm trying to decide which one I am going to buy and I really want to be able to cut the waterslides out with my cricut. I would assume both will do it but all the tutorials seem to show them using the maker...
Beth Stice I just did this a hour ago with my explore air 2. I seen somebody say you have to set it to waterslide with the custom option, but I just set it to Vinyl+ & it cut just fine.
This is so beautiful! I am new here. Is there somewhere I can learn about registration marks and how that works? I try to cut things on my cricut and I think the registration marks will help it cut correctly. Thanks.

I have a criciit joy. Can you print the decal on an ink jet printer ?
We're sorry, but print then cut is not available with the Cricut Joy
My decals are not brightly colored when I use the maker help is there another program anyone could suggest
What materials does the water slide technique on work on?
I like to say all "slick" materials. so like mugs and metal signs. License plates, phone cases, etc.
@@MakersGonnaLearn Awesome! Thank you so much! :)
Thank you. I am a newbie and would love to try these. Well done video. ❤️🇨🇦
You can do it!🙂
Best video ever thank you. I needed this help❤️
So glad!
I've been looking for a video showing how to make decals! This would've been really helpful when I used to build model cars. Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
What printer do you use??
Can you cut the decal layer without cutting the backing with a cricut?
I love the way it came out and how you explain everything so much detail thank you so much
Putting on card stock setting for some reason doesn’t work for my cricut it would never read the lines.
Can I use clear waterslide paper?
using hayes paper and my decals are not printing crisp and clear they look awful. Is it my image quality? printer settings?
Is using the mug safe after using sealant? Does it need to be food grade safe? I feel like polyurethane isn’t. 😥
polyurethane is FDA approved for contact with food.
Our friend is correct! After 28 days of cure time, it is both food safe and dish washer safe :)
Yes, thank you!
Thank you for the response! I’ve learned something new about Polyurethane 😁
Would this mug be dishwasher and microwave safe?
Does it have to be the cricut maker or ca it be done on the cricut explorer air
You can make this with an Explore Air as well :) Thanks for asking!
Can you use any printer? I have never printed then cut
You can use any Inkjet printer :)
Can you use an Epson printer 2800 for this
Do I need to seal it again after baking with mod podge?
We don't bake with mod podge, we just seal it :)
Does the cup or whatever the decal is going on have to be white?
If you want your waterslide decal to show up, yes. But this brand also has white waterslide paper, so you can place that product on dark colored mugs, etc. amzn.to/3hXlNpt
I can seal wood or glass after applying water slice stickers and how:
Thanks for this tutorial.
You are so welcome!
Great video, many thanks!
Glad you liked it!
very nice work. how long it will stay?
When I go to cut my waterslide paper on my circuit, I keep getting error that the machine cannot read the image, even though the black lines are visible. Can you please tell me what I am doing wrong. Is there a setting for waterslide on the machine. Thanks for your support.
You have to add the Waterslide setting manually to your machine. I encountered this same issue before on another project when my registration marks for one image were to close to the marks for another image on the vinyl I was using. What I did was put a piece of paper over the image I didn't want it to cut so that the cricut was only reading the marks for the image I was working on.
When this happens to me I draw around the black square with a black marker, and then it reads it
Does anybody know if both styles of cricut, the maker or the air 2, can do this? Cut out the waterslide from the image I print on the special paper I mean. I'm trying to decide which one I am going to buy and I really want to be able to cut the waterslides out with my cricut. I would assume both will do it but all the tutorials seem to show them using the maker...
Beth Stice I just did this a hour ago with my explore air 2. I seen somebody say you have to set it to waterslide with the custom option, but I just set it to Vinyl+ & it cut just fine.
You can use any cutting machine. All crickets and Silhouette machines can cut through this.
Thank you for this video! Very informative. I can't wait to try it!
I'm so glad you enjoyed this video!
This is so beautiful! I am new here. Is there somewhere I can learn about registration marks and how that works? I try to cut things on my cricut and I think the registration marks will help it cut correctly. Thanks.
Yes! Here is a video for you: ruclips.net/video/FmrUpLikSXU/видео.html . And here is the time to skip to, to get your question answered: - Why is there a black box around my image with Print Then Cut - time 9:50
Can you put the finished decal in the dishwasher?
