- Did Mace Windu Actually Defeat Palpatine?
Darth Sidious is one of the most powerful beings in the Star Wars Galaxy. Despite 4 Jedi masters having the high ground, he was able to kill 3 of them in mere seconds, showing just how powerful he is. However, he was defeated by Mace Windu minutes later, with many believing this was a planned defeat in order to coax Anakin Skywalker to the dark side. However, Mace Windu was known as the Jedis greatest champion and was likely the Jedi most suited for defeating a Sith lord. Mace Windu was a master at Vaapad, a lightsaber form that channeled an opponent's rage and hatred back at them. He was also a master at the force shatterpoint ability, which allowed him to determine the exact points of weaknesses in an opponent's defenses. Although he was less powerful than the sith, Windu used these advantages to beat Palpatine in the lightsaber duel fair and square, which has been confirmed by George Lucas himself.

Didn’t palpatine focus on perfecting is power in the force more than his duelling. He was still one of the most formidable duellists ever but I think it is completely plausible that mace was just a better duellist due to him focusing on perfecting is duelling ability

Mace was also staggered by that force scream. If Palpatine hadn’t killed the other three first and gone for Mace first he would have died right there. Palpatine also had other opportunities to kill Mace during the fight but passed them up. So even though he did lose at the end it’s not like he couldn’t have won.

This actually explains why Kit Fisto died so quickly .. It wasn't just Sith scream that played a part in bringing Kit Fisto down alone. Lightsaber form 1 was garbage against Palpatine etc..

I think we just don't understand Windu's character enough.. Mace is heavily nerfed by the storyline. We know 1000% he wields the light and dark side of the force. Yoda is similar, but what separates them is Windu's constant battle not to become OP... However that is speculation and i digress...
...But Still! Lets think critically... Palp killed 3 Jedi masters..... why was Windo so special? So if Windu just stopped fighting, would Palp have spared him? Why didn't he just kill Windu first and play with Kit, Agen, or Saesee???.... Would've made more sense right?.. I may be crazy tho..
If anakin hadn't of interfered I believe windu would have beaten palpatine.
He had already beaten Palpatine. Palpatine was at Windu’s mercy, Anakin getting involved saved Palpatine from death, not from a loss.

While Windu may have defeated him in a saber fight, I tend to believe that Palpatine could have taken him down with the power of the force. Nobody has his force capability, except the chosen one at his best. Everything after Palpatine lost his saber is a performance for Anakin in my opinion.

We literally watch the guy Manipulate the entire Galaxy into a full scale war, played both sides, he clouded the Jedi’s minds, and on top of that it is hinted that he was the reason Anakin was having the nightmares of Padme dying. Yoda could feel Anakins emotions when he was on Tattooine slaughtering the Tuskens. So we know force sensitives can feel other Jedi across vast distances, its not unreasonable to believe that Palpatine was drawing out the fight against Mace Windu because he knew Anakin was coming. Considering that he had executed a well established Plan to take over the galaxy, he probably even planned out the fight.

The good news is that George Lucas confirmed that Mace Windu is still alive…technically…Samuel Jackson said that he wanted his character to be alive because it’s actually plausible, and George said 'I'm okay with that. You can be alive." :D!!! They NEED to make something on that….would be cool if it was included in the new Obi Wan Kenobi show……And then Anakin meets him again……as Vader. That would be so interesting…

So, I think it is pretty likely that he will return in one of the current shows. Wouldn't be surprised if he got his own mini series either.

That makes absolutely no sense, in deleted scenes from the movie, the novilization, and legends, Anakin was walking over the corpses of Jedi masters as the duel was continuing. And it wasn't until Anakin was fully in view of the fight that palpatine suddenly loses his saber, gets dunked on, and plays the victim card.

Mace clearly won the duel. Palpating, once he saw Anakin’s weak ass, hammed it up so Anakin can sell out the Jedi and backstab Mace. I hate when people think that Palpatine actually threw the fight. No! He lost.
It’s obvious he threw the fight. He sensed anakin coming and his conflict within him. Sidous one second says “I need you anakin I’m weak. Together we have the power to save the one you love” then next second he blasts mace off the building saying “ UNLIMITED POWER!!! “ he had plenty of power left and was holding bad vs mace.

Palpatine killed them by who's more dangerous. First guy Agen Kolar was the strongest of the 3 (possibly tied with Windu). The 3 messed up being on an angle that made it hard to react, they probably thought they were just background muscles lol. He was a master swordsman that everyone knew including Palpatine.

Mace wasn't affected at all by the scream because he was that much more powerful than the 3 other Jedi, and his lightsaber form also helped him a lot vs Palpatine.

This is how I see it, ace Windu did indeed best Palpatine in their lightsaber duel, but Palpatine certainly wasn't out for the count as shortly after being backed into a corner he unleashed a surge of force lightning unto Mace windu. Sidious continues his unrelenting barrage until he senses Anakin coming, he then puts up a scene by weakening the tone of his voice and ceasing to attack Mace Windu all the while begging for his life to be spared (which is very uncharacteristic of Palpatine). This scene was meant to "prove" to Anakin that the Jedi were so frightened of being dethroned that they would murder a "defenceless" Sith to see to it that such events never transpire, a lie which was further emphasised by Mace windu's eagerness to kill off the mastermind behind the clone wars which, unbeknownst to Anakin, was an act of righteousness. This scene was the tipping of the iceberg to Anakin's fall after years of manipulation by Palpatine.
Mace definitely bested Palpatine and anyone who knows anything about Mace being a master at Vaapad, would come to the logical conclusion Palpatine’s goose was cooked…Besides George Lucas confirmed Mace defeated Palpatine.

@worldstar shortz that was his true form revealing itself. Sith who plunge deep into the dark side with rituals and such are consumed by it. One of the effects are disfigured faces. Palpatine had to put on a facade all the time and keep his presence in the force hidden to hide his identity from the Jedi.
Prime example look at dooku. He leaned towards the dark side but never fully gave himself to it. It’s why he’s doesn’t have sith eyes or looks decrepit.
You can see this if you watch the clones wars when he was fighting maul. You see him as the decrepit and discolored sith that he his. Compared to when he’s acting as chancellor.

Usually when a man who loses their weapon in battle, tumbles to the floor and is quietly hissing but loudly cowering after being drained to a sack from using the force too much and is about it be murdered by a chad wielding a purple glow stick, that means they lost a duel.
My 2 cents.
Mace Windu had 2 assets in this fight that he used against Palpatine: Vapaad and his shaterpoint ability.
Vapaad allowed him to contend and even push back in a tactical sense (matching blows and even counter attacking), but his shatterpoint sense is what he was using to find the weakness in Palpatine he could leverage to win the fight.
In the ROTS novel, towards the end of the fight he starts to see a shatterpoint, sensing fear and using that in his vapaad to push Palpatine back and eventually disarming him.
Everything Windu did for the last part of the fight was driving towards this shatterpoint, but what he didn’t realize was he was pushing at Anakins shatter point, his fear of losing padme, confusion of allegiance between Palpatine and the Jedi, and his loyalty to both Palpatine and the Jedi (although this was on shaky ground at this time)
I think that Windu used the emotion he was sensing from Anakin to beat Palpatine, but by doing so in a way that lead to anakins shatterpoint, not Palpatines. Palpatine even says “you think that is MY fear you are sensing?” when Windu accuses him of being afraid, pointing out that the shatterpoint Windu is leveraging isn’t coming from Palpatine.
Windu then decides to try the mortal blow on Palpatine and we all know what happened from there.
He leveraged anakins shatterpoint and emotions along side Palpatines to beat him, but in so doing triggered the shatterpoint that was anakin that ultimately led to him losing.
Honestly, I think this perfectly embodies the fight between the Jedi and the sith as a whole throughout the trilogy. While the Jedi were prepared for a war of combat and force abilities (Vapaad, shatterpoint) Palpatine and the Sith has been playing Galactic chess to corner the Jedi into a lose lose situation (Palpatine grooming Anakin and setting up the trap that was the clone wars to set up the Jedi to weaken both their numbers and their moral standing amongst the republic and even their own like Anakin and Asoka).
In order for Mace to beat Palpatine, he had to use Anakins fear to fuel his fighting, and even though he won the duel, he couldn’t kill Palpatine because Anakins shatterpoint was the chancellor, and the power he had offered him to save Padme. Mace Won the duel, but could not win the fight because Palpatine had already won before it started.
They both won in a sense, Mace won the duel, but Palpatine won the fight (for Anakins allegiance). Mace was playing the game right in front of him that Palpatine had set up on purpose. A fight that no matter what he did, the sith would come out on top

He definitely beat Palpatine. However was Palpatine fighting at full power I don't know seeing what we've seen in clone wars it would suggest Palpatine was going easy.
Well I'd say then that was Palps fault and his misjudgment of Mace Windu, and it would have been funny if he died cause he underestimated Mace's power and strength in his dueling skills and connection to the force.

I've heard from multiple sources that the scream palp did before he killed 3 masters was a force scream which disoriented the masters and it was why they just sat there and died.
Well in the books or comics Kit Fisto surveves for quite a bit longer so not sure about that

It's crazy how lightsaber battles make it seem like "sword" fighting skill is only involved when actually how hard you swing matters less than composure, focus and other mental warfare.
I always wondered why they don't force attack in the many variations of ways (push, lightning...) The answer is they actually are fighting in each other's minds and altering emotional the foes state of mind producing fear, submissive compassion...

Do to the trained style of Vapa’ad when Palpatine did force lighting on Mace, Mace was able to take the negative energy and send it back to Palpatine, hence deforming him
Wasn't mace the greatest Duelist that the jedi order even better than yoda So it is believable that he won in the duel aspect but not the force itself

It makes other Jedis more cooler cause having the main 3 Obiwan, Yoda and Anakin in the movies that is. Ofc in the clonewars many more Jedis were showed feats but for people who only watched the movies it's quite good

Mace Windu 's vaapad technique was stronger than Sidius' s juyo technique so Mace Windu beat him but although Palpie had a second Lightsaber in his left arm, he didn't use it because he also wanted to take Anakin his side so he showed himself aggrieved. And in a cutted scene from Revenge of the Sith we see that Palpie talked to Anakin for help so he knew that Anakin will come and help him.
