  • The 'Group B' International Motorsports Category was conceived in the late seventies as a return to the good old days when amateur and factory teams alike could run the same production-based cars in either sports car racing or championship rally events. By the early eighties the class had become the 'Godzilla' of the rally scene and what resulted were the most awesome race cars ever seen on the rally stages of the world: 600 horsepower, 4WD, turbocharged monsters that could cover forest, tarmac or gravel stages faster than anything ever seen before or since.
In 1986 the door was slammed shut on the F1 cars of mountain and forest roads. Faster and faster cars combined with wilder and crazier crowds meant that within the confines of rally car competition the group B rocket ships were just "too fast to race". The legacy of Group B, however, is a whole range of spectacular cars that continue to thrill enthusiasts today.
Features include the Ford RS200, Lancia 037 Rally, Lancia S4, MG Metro 6R4, Peugeot 205/T16, Audi Quattro, Renault 5 Turbo, Opel, Citroen also the amazing Ferrari 288GTO Evoluzione, Jaguar XJ220 supercar and Porsche 959 - the car that came closest of all to fulfilling the Group B ethos. It won both the Paris-Dakar and its class in the Le Mans 24 Hour Race! Includes awesome action footage and stunning close-ups.

I vaguely remember being a little boy age 8-10 when I was glued to the TV tube in the living room at weekend afternoons when these Rallyes were broadcast. Rallye was No.1 excitement due to the exotic and ever changing landscape, closely followed by the endurance horror of 24hrs Le Mans with their insane prototypes. Those were the Days of Thunder, man.

The crazy thing about the Quattro is that, other than the wings and spoilers, it was a very ordinary looking "3 box" design. The Lancia, Ford, Peugeot, Renault, etc looked pretty wild.

If the fans want to risk their life to watch the excitement of ralley racing, then that’s their personal decision. Crazy how people are able to jump from airplanes legally but not let able to watch a dangerous race.

Someone killing himself on his own is one thing, but in rallying, there is also a car involved. You can not force a driver to live with the fact that he or she killed someone, even if that person is an idiot. There is actual footage of drivers after the Portuguese rally saying they didn't like coming to Portugal, that they don't want to live for the rest of their lives knowing they killed somebody.

@@prinzeugen1220 Exactly what I was thinking, the earth doesn't have a conscience or suffer from PTSD after being slapped by a meat sack travelling at terminal velocity.
Plus, one doesn't simply stick their thumb out, catch a passing plane, chuck on a backpack and yeet themselves into the atmosphere. There's all these forms one must sign consenting to the fact that you have a high risk of coming back un-alive. If 20,000 young men bubbling over with testosterone signed those forms, paid for the mandatory death and dismemberment insurance policies, and then did the impossible… obeyed the marshalling rules maybe, just maybe things would have been different. But seeing that rally cars were lapping race tracks as fast as the phenomenal turbo charged F1 cars with their 1500bhp qualification engines, even those men with massive balls were getting to the point of thinking that this is getting out of hand. The rally that Henri Toivonen died driving, other drivers had bailed out because of the danger - as you eluded to.
Ironically, rally cars these days are getting close to or are now possibly faster than the Group B's… RIP Craig Breen.
EDIT:Remedied my Neandertal based grammar - I think.

It never ceases to amaze me when people mispronounce names (Lan-cia) even though they have segments in their videos where the names are pronounced correctly (Lan-cha).
