It's unfortunate that the lack of crowd control and flimsy Lancias ruined group B. It's truly an amazing spectacle to behold. I wish I could have seen it in person but it was before my time. Still I enjoy watching these old tapes and these truly heroic drivers taming such mad machinery.

Group B and Group C were fated to doom, they were getting massive popular so the FIA has to kill it to protect their golden baby, F1

    • @l555mat8
      @l555mat8 9 месяцев назад +12

They were two of the catalysts. Behind the scenes Ecclestone and the FIA wanted Group B banned because it had become more popular than F1.

I was lucky enough to start watching it in 1984. The same year I started watching F1. I was gutted when Group B ended, although it was the right decision. It was a victim of it's own success.

      Hello, dear friends.
Like you, I have been involved in rallies for most of my life. I compared the different periods of time, some of which I experienced directly myself. My time as a rally enthusiast began in 1984, at the age of eleven years. And I was living at the north-western part of lower austria, where the Semperit-Rallye took place. So I had the great luck to see the old-styled competition cars like the Escorts or Asconas as well as Walter Röhrl and Christian Geistdörfer with the extremely powerful works Audi Sport Quattro S1.
The matter is: The fastest vehicles in group B where too over-powered and too technically exhausted. At the other side, the group A cars and group N cars had been too boring. But also in some cases extremely strong and expensive, as you could see it especially on the Lancia Integrale.
I think that both the excesses of Group B and the blandness of Group A as the highest class have done a lot of damage to rallying. With the first generation of World Rally Cars (starting in 1997), things were moving in the right direction again - principially. Unfortunately, the rallies were shortened too much and separated between gravel and asphalt. This has resulted in another very expensive, upgraded generation of rally cars. But at least the vehicles were very safe.
The problem with today's top sports rallies is that there are too few competitors (only Hyundai and Toyota, and a few Ford with M-Sport). This is because the regulations are only suitable for very few car manufacturers. The rallies should also become longer and more demanding again. In general, I would like to see more competition with more different types of vehicles.

Of course it is not the same.
It's really important to accept that things are changing over time. But it should not happen in a way that the quality of the sport sinks completely to the bottom. In detail: That there are only three car brands that are competing for overall wins. And in the other cathegories of cars like Rally2 or Rally4 it is almost the same.
There are several reasons why the trend has gone so strongly in this direction. The numerous company mergers, especially those affecting the automobile industry, which means that there are fewer independent companies than before and therefore less competition, are one of them.
Nevertheless, I can imagine that it would be possible to create the conditions for the use of more different types of cars. The technical rules could be made a little more open so that more different manufacturers would be interested in participating. Or private teams could also use the offer. It could also help a little to give the GT cars a little more horsepower and thus increase the participation incentive for such cars.
Unfortunately, I often have the feeling that certain groups of people do not want more competition in the World Rally Championship.
The fact that the rallies today are much shorter, as it used to be in former times, and not so much demanding in terms of driving also points in this direction for me.
Probably the only way to change this is for rally fans to turn their backs on the World Rally Championship in large numbers. And instead to support competitions with an original character such as the Roger Albert Clark Rally. Or to independently create a completely new format of rally events that retains the old, attractive features.
What do other people who like rallies say about this? Or does anybody have some other ideas what to do could be a better solution? I would be very interested to get knowledge of this...🙂

On those times all was diferent , yes , and on those times there were lots of interest around the countrys to havethe rally. There were many kills in other countrys , and they were never news. There was one in Portugal (the only one with so many fatals) and it was a world news. Corsiga had many fatals and Monte Carlo also. THe spetactors they were all wild , in every country. It was diferent times. It was the best rally in the world (it was know like that) But there were many countrys without a rally ... you will be the best judge for that. For Ford was perfect to retire from the rally .....many interests were around

What he meant was, the RS200 rallye car was build out of the 200 production cars each manufacturer had to build for Group B homologation. At that time when the RS200 had it´s debut, Audi and Peugeot had already evolution rallye cars (Audi S1 Evo2, Peugeot 205 T16 Evo2). Ford also planned to make the RS200 more competitive with a evolution modell. But that never happened, because Group B died after Corsica 1986.

It was but 200 cars were never produced, it seems they got away with less than 50 by clever shuffling them around at inspections.
The car wasn’t up to the standard required anyway when it came out it just didn’t work well enough. Bit like the 6R4, that had the power but it was too short and wide compared to the 205 T16. I was watching rally during all the 1980’s.
Spectator safety was only ever an issue abroad. There were never problems in UK because the stages were properly marshalled! Nobody was ever allowed to stand on the outside of a corner anywhere.
The Lancia Stratos was a beast of a car but very twitchy the Delta was good but, by the time it was winning Audi and Peugeot weren’t really competing at top spec.
Quattro wasn’t that special until the S1 appeared, you could her it miles away in the night. Michele Mouton could really throw one around.
I even remember Carlos Sainz senior debuting in RAC rally in a pink XR4!
