You know, for a great story it's important to make great work, for this reason, this is a 10 hands work (+ the special Cesare Fiorio's touch)! I really hope you'll appreciate it, we worked for months to assure you a quality video! Just to underline how much the project was important for me, at a certain point in the video I will also appear personally for the first time on my channel...
It would be great to have more videos like this for other historic seasons, like Fiat vs Ford in 1977, or the birth of 4wd rallycar in 1981... but I understand it would take a huge amount of time, material and work. Well, I can dream and for now just enjoy this wonderful piece of work.
Michelle Mouton is not only the greatest female driver in history. She is technically the greatest female sportsperson in history. Because she actually win against men.
The last Hurrah of the RWD rally car. To me, this period is the absolute pinnacle of rally. The 037, an absolute weapon of a car and the most desirable of all the group B cars. Great video! Thanks for sharing it with us!!!!
Cant get enough of the 037. I must own a model in every scale. The 037 and the Strada were it in the 80's . I grew up with these car's. The Martini livery is just timeless .As to the driver's it takes Onions to Manhandle one of these beasts on or off the tarmac . This is an era when multiple driver's passed every year .
Awesome! I remember seeing Jeremy Clarkson's episode about this. I didn't know much about group b then, but watching that got me interested and now the group b era is my favorite time in rally history. Love the Audi quattro and the lancia 037 and delta s4! Also in the 70s there was the lancia stratos with a dino engine probably my favorite rally car prior to group b era
I had a Dino 246GT - the engine and the sound to me was the best part - despite it being particularly unreliable -and the driving position offset and awkward - a nice party piece was the downshift from fourth to second with a double dab of throttle between gears spitting flames out the back - I would often catch the glow in the mirror when it was dark!!!!
Thank you for the video! I was 13 yrs old in 1983 and remember some of it on TV in Finland. Great season! Btw, my father knew Pauli Toivonen (Henri’s father) quite well

Very nice tribute. But eventually AUDI confirmed with the quatrro system for it and then all racing cars got 4 wheel drive to this day. Audi in 1980 had said and predicted that the time would come when even a mini cooper would be four wheel drive !!
Excellent video. I rewatched The Grand Tour Segment yesterday and there isn't very much rally footage from 1983 most of the time is spent talking about the quattro and the 037 and Group B rules.
The reasons why Audi lost the Constructors' Championship that year are very clear: A World Cup with 2 asphalt races out of 12 in total and one of them without snow or ice as was Monte Carlo that year 83. It also excludes Safari and Ivory Coast which were "mini-raids" for "unbreakable tanks" style Toyota Celica Twincam 2WD . The rest: 8 rallies of dirt, mud and snow, should have been easily won by Audi and its 4WD car. If you don't win the Sanremo, although here the tricks-strategy of Mr. Fiorio, who was allowed to "sweep" the dirt stages, literally, with assistance vans equipped with sweeper brooms and they were allowed to put in front of the Audi to the slower Lancias to leave the dust in suspension. If Audi then due to reliability problems lost rallies that you should easily win like New Zealand and Acropolis. Then there's a car that goes very well on all types of terrain, like a 037, which is also a very efficient "authentic Gr. B" mid-engine car and you have people like Röhrl, Alén, Bettega in your ranks. If besides the Audi is a car that performs quite poorly on dry asphalt and is no rival to the 037 on this surface, and also has frequent reliability problems that adds many withdraws, you end up realizing why Audi did not win the Constructors' Championship that year. year 83 having everything in favor.
you gota love the creative way the italians bent the rules too win . loved groupb but it was very dangerous all rallys was dangerous look at the crowds. i remeber a lancia driver saying he came back from a stage with peoples fingers stuck in vents from the crowd patting car as it passed
Same of many others you focused strictly on the creative way Lancia bypassed rules with some innocent tricks, but the biggest benting of the most stringent and important rule was by german AUDI, the rule of the 4 wheel traction forbid, a template of rally racing that was broken in favour of AUDI thanks to corrupt FIA...!
Per me il 037 in casa lancia è il re di tutti i rally, il deltone lo metterei al secondo posto visto che era una macchina troppo avanzata a quei tempi e non aveva rivali duri

Those was the days, when I had more hair high than low on body and cars and competitions looked great and was night riding. Competitions was more interesting too.
Wait what? There is a Rallye movie about this in production and Daniel Brühl is in it? (The guy who managed to even sound like Niki Lauda when portraing him in two languages!) Seems like there is a reason for me go go to a cinema in the future again at some point.
Röhrl was the factor in Lancia winning the makes title in 83 more than Lancia's more dodgy tactics Röhrl had proven time and time again to be a thorn in Audi's side in past years Driving for the likes of Porsche in the 911 and Opel in the Ascona 400 . winning the Drivers title in the Latter Opel against all odds. Lancia knew what they were getting talent wise when they signed Röhrl on his very limited race program. he had himself driven for Fiat before and secured his First Drivers Title, and Fiat just happened to own Lancia. Röhrl also refused to sign to Audi at that time instead making it is person mission to beat the 4WD cars though he would finally relent for 1984 after Audi made it their mission to sign Röhrl at any cost so they no long had to suffer him making things so difficult for them. This interesting story of Röhrl and Audi is accounted in Walter Röhrl's Diary book 1 that can be found in English unlike the follow up book 2 which to my better understanding was never translated in English. In fact Röhrl regrets now not doing the full championship in 1983 as he would have probably won his third WRC Championship to add to his many pre WRC titles. Once at Audi he went on to create a new legend there with various versions of the Quattro including winning first time out in the Quattro and then taking the only win for the Quattro evolution Sport the big winged Monster in 1985 . and then after Group B Pikes Peak hillclimb in yet another winged Quattro sport. and then all manner of other Types of Quattro based sports prototypes in the USA and Europe. and lastly not forgetting his work for his favorite make of cars Porsche were he was a development and test driver and still is involved with to this day.
I highly recommend reading "Diary" by Walter Röhrl. He signed for 6 rallyes of his choice and those six (3 victories, 2x 2nd, 1x 3rd place) were already done when Lancia decided to leave out the remaning events. He didn't want to become WC for a 3rd time, because he didn't like all the publicity and being kinda superstar of the scene.
Lets not forget that Lancia (Fiorio) was also responsible for the death of Henri T in their frenzy to beat the 4wd revolution, with questionable decisions made that compromised safety.
I Saw the grand tour Jérémy Clarkson Lancia vs Audi and give me the chils and almost cried about Lancia s cunning and genious . Like Clarkson Saïd the rear wheel drive Lancia beated the four wheel drive goliath. Now i want to Say that this video IS very complète good job.

The 037 wasn't even that impressive when compared to the Delta Integrale S4 Evolution that Lancia fielded the following year in 1984. The 037 really only excelled on paved stages of rallies when compared to the Quattro.
