- WRC 1983 saw the emotional fight between Lancia 037 and Audi Quattro: 2WD vs 4WD, Italian cunning vs German organization.
Both teams had the best drivers: Walter Röhrl and Markku Alén for Lancia Hannu Mikkola, Stig Blomqvist, and Michéle Mouton for Audi.
A unique and intense season, who will be the winner?

You know, for a great story it's important to make great work, for this reason, this is a 10 hands work (+ the special Cesare Fiorio's touch)!
I really hope you'll appreciate it, we worked for months to assure you a quality video!
Just to underline how much the project was important for me, at a certain point in the video I will also appear personally for the first time on my channel...
It would be great to have more videos like this for other historic seasons, like Fiat vs Ford in 1977, or the birth of 4wd rallycar in 1981... but I understand it would take a huge amount of time, material and work. Well, I can dream and for now just enjoy this wonderful piece of work.

The best rally seasons ever.
Colin McRae and Walter Rohrl & Henri Toivonen are three of the greatest rally drivers of all time.
Group B is the best era of rallying by far.
:)
Back in the day, My Dad bought an original 1983 Audi Coupe Quattro in silver. What a machine!!
Cant get enough of the 037. I must own a model in every scale. The 037 and the Strada were it in the 80's .
I grew up with these car's. The Martini livery is just timeless .As to the driver's it takes Onions to Manhandle one of these beasts
on or off the tarmac . This is an era when multiple driver's passed every year .
The last Hurrah of the RWD rally car. To me, this period is the absolute pinnacle of rally. The 037, an absolute weapon of a car and the most desirable of all the group B cars.
Great video! Thanks for sharing it with us!!!!
Thanks a lot Robert!
Thanks for this informative video. The Lancia team's tactics at the Monte Carlo race made me chuckle.
I remember that year's Acropolis. It was a shock that Lancia won 1-2 over the Audis. Had a model car 037 on my schoolboy library shelf. ❤
This was definitely some quality content! Thank you ever so much for telling this great story. Keep up the great work.
The Lancia 037 remains Röhrl's favorite car.
Thank you for the video! I was 13 yrs old in 1983 and remember some of it on TV in Finland. Great season! Btw, my father knew Pauli Toivonen (Henri’s father) quite well
1983, the most incredible rally season ever indeed. Besides 1995, 1998, 2003, 2001 and every single Group B season from 1983 to 1986. :)
Thank you for letting me be a part of this!
Hi Jackoh, thanks to you! It was really a pleasure work together, I think your narration and your suggestions gave to the video gave an extra kick!!
What people forget is Michelle M did this in a ‘man’s world’ of the early 80s long before equality and quota filling. No free passes. Some might say in modern climate there may be the odd free pass. Michelle truly was a legend regardless of gender
Maybe in the future I Will make a special video about Michele 😉
Are you implying that simpery didn't exist back then?
@@TheRUBrally Please do!!?
Awesome! I remember seeing Jeremy Clarkson's episode about this. I didn't know much about group b then, but watching that got me interested and now the group b era is my favorite time in rally history. Love the Audi quattro and the lancia 037 and delta s4! Also in the 70s there was the lancia stratos with a dino engine probably my favorite rally car prior to group b era
I had a Dino 246GT - the engine and the sound to me was the best part - despite it being particularly unreliable -and the driving position offset and awkward - a nice party piece was the downshift from fourth to second with a double dab of throttle between gears spitting flames out the back - I would often catch the glow in the mirror when it was dark!!!!
Walter Röhrl, one of the best Diver of all Time.
I don't know about his 'diving' capabilities, but he sure was the best driver out there....😁😎
Best driver still alive from that Era

Yep, right up there with Tom Daly !

I was 7 yrs old when I first saw this back in 1983

Fantastic footage and commentary. Thank you!
haha, i can imagine angry italian tourists complaining and yelling at police demanding the road to be cleaned, gotta love the italians
Thank you for this video, unforgettable season 👍
This is even better than the movie. Great work!
Thank you! This has always been my favorite year of motorsport and I adore the 037, but I had never heard the story in this much detail
Wow Therub, that was a well put together bit of rallying, the amount of information and videos that you had to look up on that must of took you forever to do, us rally fans really do appreciate it, keep up the good work please.

The reasons why Audi lost the Constructors' Championship that year are very clear:
A World Cup with 2 asphalt races out of 12 in total and one of them without snow or ice as was Monte Carlo that year 83. It also excludes Safari and Ivory Coast which were "mini-raids" for "unbreakable tanks" style Toyota Celica Twincam 2WD . The rest: 8 rallies of dirt, mud and snow, should have been easily won by Audi and its 4WD car.
If you don't win the Sanremo, although here the tricks-strategy of Mr. Fiorio, who was allowed to "sweep" the dirt stages, literally, with assistance vans equipped with sweeper brooms and they were allowed to put in front of the Audi to the slower Lancias to leave the dust in suspension.
If Audi then due to reliability problems lost rallies that you should easily win like New Zealand and Acropolis.
Then there's a car that goes very well on all types of terrain, like a 037, which is also a very efficient "authentic Gr. B" mid-engine car and you have people like Röhrl, Alén, Bettega in your ranks.
If besides the Audi is a car that performs quite poorly on dry asphalt and is no rival to the 037 on this surface, and also has frequent reliability problems that adds many withdraws, you end up realizing why Audi did not win the Constructors' Championship that year. year 83 having everything in favor.
Great documentary, thank you!
What a great story, it felt like it came out of a movie, I hope that this future movie does it justice. Grazie e mi sono iscritto
Wow. Good job, great commentary!!!
YES A MOVIE ABOUT IT I WANNA SEE IT. That is nice
Thank you for this interesting video and information collection🙂👍
Excellent video. I rewatched The Grand Tour Segment yesterday and there isn't very much rally footage from 1983 most of the time is spent talking about the quattro and the 037 and Group B rules.

Good job! Thank you!
Great video thanks
Such a shame that Lancia withdrawn the last two events... By the way, epic season and epic video! 🎉 Greetings from Sanremo!
Very nice tribute. But eventually AUDI confirmed with the quatrro system for it and then all racing cars got 4 wheel drive to this day. Audi in 1980 had said and predicted that the time would come when even a mini cooper would be four wheel drive !!

Always Forza lancia ❤️
you gota love the creative way the italians bent the rules too win . loved groupb but it was very dangerous all rallys was dangerous look at the crowds. i remeber a lancia driver saying he came back from a stage with peoples fingers stuck in vents from the crowd patting car as it passed
Same of many others you focused strictly on the creative way Lancia bypassed rules with some innocent tricks, but the biggest benting of the most stringent and important rule was by german AUDI, the rule of the 4 wheel traction forbid, a template of rally racing that was broken in favour of AUDI thanks to corrupt FIA...!
1983. The greatest WRC Season ever apart from 1995 and 1998.
1998 soon on the Channel 😀
Röhrl was the factor in Lancia winning the makes title in 83 more than Lancia's more dodgy tactics Röhrl had proven time and time again to be a thorn in Audi's side in past years Driving for the likes of Porsche in the 911 and Opel in the Ascona 400 .
winning the Drivers title in the Latter Opel against all odds. Lancia knew what they were getting talent wise when they signed Röhrl on his very limited race program. he had himself driven for Fiat before and secured his First Drivers Title, and Fiat just happened to own Lancia.
Röhrl also refused to sign to Audi at that time instead making it is person mission to beat the 4WD cars though he would finally relent for 1984 after Audi made it their mission to sign Röhrl at any cost so they no long had to suffer him making things so difficult for them.
This interesting story of Röhrl and Audi is accounted in Walter Röhrl's Diary book 1 that can be found in English unlike the follow up book 2 which to my better understanding was never translated in English.
In fact Röhrl regrets now not doing the full championship in 1983 as he would have probably won his third WRC Championship to add to his many pre WRC titles.
Once at Audi he went on to create a new legend there with various versions of the Quattro including winning first time out in the Quattro and then taking the only win for the Quattro evolution Sport the big winged Monster in 1985 . and then after Group B Pikes Peak hillclimb in yet another winged Quattro sport. and then all manner of other Types of Quattro based sports prototypes in the USA and Europe.
and lastly not forgetting his work for his favorite make of cars Porsche were he was a development and test driver and still is involved with to this day.
Bravo!
037 not only unique. It one of the sexiest car I've ever seen
Excellent

Per me il 037 in casa lancia è il re di tutti i rally, il deltone lo metterei al secondo posto visto che era una macchina troppo avanzata a quei tempi e non aveva rivali duri
Those was the days, when I had more hair high than low on body and cars and competitions looked great and was night riding. Competitions was more interesting too.

Seeing how the main character of the "2 Win" will be an engineer, I don't think it's going to be as fun to watch as Ford v Ferrari
Love the Lancia Stratos..
Wait what? There is a Rallye movie about this in production and Daniel Brühl is in it? (The guy who managed to even sound like Niki Lauda when portraing him in two languages!)
Seems like there is a reason for me go go to a cinema in the future again at some point.
both amazing', cars for that time'! this shows its the race' car driver', not the cars power', peace
Haha, nice response from Lancia to Rohrl. He refuses to drive in Filnand and Lancia canceled last two races when Rohrl had a big chance for title.
He didn't like the "shumps" of finnland, he is a special one. But a genius
@@JP-xd6fm I can understand that only if he had issues with spine.
I highly recommend reading "Diary" by Walter Röhrl. He signed for 6 rallyes of his choice and those six (3 victories, 2x 2nd, 1x 3rd place) were already done when Lancia decided to leave out the remaning events. He didn't want to become WC for a 3rd time, because he didn't like all the publicity and being kinda superstar of the scene.
