If they intended to add a kamikaze pilot they probably wouldn't have used the scene where his ship got hit and started spinning. Also he would probably have a line like "For the rebellion!" or "For freedom!".

Wedge should show up in Disney movies as the master of Poe Dameron... The only true pilot with NO FORCE to help him to survive two death starts, two star detroyer, on super destroyer, a whole lot of dogfights and one snow battle with snowspeeders...

Too many good pilots have lost their lives in the fight against the Empire. Darklighter, Senesca, Santage, Rhysati, the names go on. But their sacrifice was not in vain. Because of the efforts of all of our Alliance personell, we bested the Empire and brought forth the New Republic to bring peace and equality for all in the Galaxy. And though the fighting shall never truly cease, its pilots like these who will keep the hope for a better future alive.

Love the demonstration of leadership in the face of extreme adversity during the first Death Star battle. They were there to do 1 job and we're not going to waste any time or resources on anything else - even at the expense of their own lives. A worthy sacrifice and the only reason they were successful.

As a Kid, the first time I saw Star Wars, I ruded for Biggs to survive then, in Empire, I wanted Dak to survive. We all know how that ended. So the time for Return of the Jedi came and I knew tht the guy I pick would be dead soon so uninterested, I chose Wedge. He not only survied he blew the second Death Star! And when I rewatched the episodes, Wedge was there all the time. He became my favourite character but stilll he deserves more recognition.
I think that A-Wing pilot deserves the most respect along with Wedge. Sure Wedge kept fighting and helped take down DS2, but Arvel literally saved the battle for the cruisers
