  • Climb aboard my train of thought as I share some personal middle-of-the-night model railroading philosophy. Yeah, I couldn't sleep either.

This viewpoint is from a 62 year olds perspective. When I was a teenager and into my 20’s, layouts like Allen McLelland’s Virginian & Ohio absolutely captivated me! I dreamed of buying a house and building a massive basement empire! Nothing else would suffice! By the time we finally built that house, I was in my early 40’s and had a family and job (41 years on Southern Railway/Norfolk Southern ironically!), and my priorities had changed. At that point in life, I’d look at layouts like the V&O and think “was this guy a slave to that layout, and neglected his family responsibilities in the name of building that ultra realistic railroad?”. Fast forward 20 years and look in my basement. No layout. It never happened. Part of that was the costs, and this was in the timeframe that rolling stock and locomotives took a rocket ride in price. I basically do no modeling now, and get my fix by watching vids such as yours. Your channel has, however, got me thinking about a shelf switching layout! Very small, but something! Thanks for putting out your vids!

Thank you for the excellent feedback! I looked up Allen’s V&O and quite a massive and impressive endeavour… perhaps too massive for someone that prefers to focus on an achievable layout that still yields plenty of satisfaction.
I am looking forward in seeing your switching layout and I’d be super thrilled if you’d want to discuss some plans privately.

Great video and a useful reminder! Chasing the mojo can be soul-destroying.. little and often helps.. and 'KISS' - choose projects that are small and achievable, strip out complications that aren't necessary. Lance's approach to modelling makes perfect sense to me. (I may not be railroad modelling just lately - playing with toy soldiers, but I'll come back to it :-) )

    • @SouthDown

I squealed with delight when I saw this: the stalked STALKING the stalker?! It is an absolute honour and privilege to be on the receiving end of your feedback and constructive criticism. Lance may write my holy books, but MoG is my messiah. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a stupid grin to sport for a while.

I enjoyed your philosophical musings, and it really is all about "making time" instead of waiting to "find the time." I am super-guilty of claiming "I don't have time" when often I just really lack the motivation or drive. It is hard at the end of a long workday, but if I can just get over that hurdle of walking over to the train set and tackling one small task, it adds up for me like it does for you. That's a large part of why I made my switching layout; my loft layout is large and overwhelming to even start, but the switching layout gave me something that felt more manageable and attainable. The skills I learn there will make doing the loft layout less overwhelming when I get to it. And I wholeheartedly agree that modeling is its own kind of art. I've built many model cars too, and both them and the train layout are indeed creative, artistic ventures.

Thank you! I try to practice what I preach. I’m working on my first structure right now - that’s why your video was timely - but energy levels at the end of the day are what they are. I still did a little but just enough to say I did it before collapsing into bed. Sweet dreams!

I've got an annoying habit of getting a little bored with a particular layout bit that I'm building at a particular time. Becomes a very unfortunate mindset when I start putting energy into another layout. Even a different scale.
I think like an awful lot of people it's a case of adding more and more and more on to what was originally a perfectly sound, compact, and functional layout design.
Thanks for the video, great to watch

I downloaded Anyrail available @ www.anyrail.com/en. It's free if you stay within a certain limit. I set the size of my working space, selected the track manufacturer, and started plotting the pieces. Then when satisfied I printed it all out in actual size, taped it together, and dropped it on top of the layout. I did this several times as my first design felt a little too "rigid" and wanted the track to be a little more "organic" in their flow. With the design in place, this made putting the flex track very easy. This new track plan significantly cut down on the "switching nightmare" I had before from 11 switches down to five.
