  • The UN Climate summit ended in Egypt with a deal to provide funding for vulnerable countries as they suffer the impact of climate change - in what's known as "loss and damage."
But while the talks were going on, in Somalia people were paying the price for the climate crisis with their lives. The worst drought in 40 years has left millions on the brink of starvation.
DW correspondent Mariel Müller traveled to Baidoa - at the center of the hunger crisis. A warning: This report contains disturbing images.

It's not just about the climate. The impact of ongoing war, poor farming techniques, large families etc has all combined to create this situation.

Water will be the most important concern for mankind. Without water, crops can't grow, and we can't eat. Farmers require water, for their crops to grow, and for their livestock to drink. All plants and animals require water to survive. Trees need ample water, because of it's too dry, they will not survive, and this increases forest fire risks.

Drought is certainly a reason that has determined, but drought cannot be a sufficient reason when it comes to give account to the starvation of millions in Somalia. It happened before in the same Somalia and in the same horn of Africa.
Today's technologies allow more accurate forecast. And attentiveness to situations could have allowed the detection of signs of the consequences of drought. And the political will could allow proactive actions that prevent or ease the consequences of drought on people in a world full of millions agencies such oxfam, save the children, etc and in a world destruction and ruin follow by deprivation have been erected into universal maxims. Drought alone cannot explain the suffering of millions.

Why famine, hunger must be the deadly miseries generations must make their's?

Population needs to be in balance with jobs, resources, nature and the environment. Having a bigger population in any country than the country can support makes no sense. Access to food, water, shelter, energy and jobs should guide population levels. The worlds population is still expected to add another billion people to feed, clothe and produce pollution. Humans are crowding out all other species of plants and animals. Education and birth control are key to reducing poverty and hunger. Having a child that you can not provide for yourself is cruel and irresponsible. We need solutions not just sympathy. Endless population growth is not sustainable on a finite planet. Every country needs to "TRY" to be more self sufficient. When there are not enough resources to sustain a population something has to give. Countries need to focus on quality of life for their citizens and not just quantity of life for cheap labor. Why import fossil fuels when wind and solar energy can be produced locally and solar energy can power electric vehicles. We need solutions not just sympathy.

the science warned the people almost a quarter century ago. 😕
How can they pretend they could survive on Mars if they can't even care for their own here?
Could they create a means to generate building material on the moon and clean drinking water? But not figure out how to do it on earth. 😬😭
That's exactly what history says .

I suspect when millions and millions of broken and disillusioned citizens of countries such as Somalia, who know full well that voluntary financial contributions from the rich world to offset the climate change triggered by rich world activity will be avoided just like these these oligarchical cliques who rule out world, avoid tax in their own countries. The people of badly climate affected countries will do the obvious thing to save themselves. They will move North, just as they are already doing. COP cannot control millions of people brought to hardship and starvation. Removing 'unfettered' capitalism is the key to reversing this process.
