🇸🇴 Horn of Africa Crisis: Somalia's Famine | Fault Lines

  • The worst drought in 60 years has thrown some 13 million people across the Horn of Africa into crisis.
In Somalia, ravaged by two decades of conflict, the consequences have been disastrous. For over six months, aid agencies on the ground sounded the alarm that a major drought and famine was on the horizon.
Then in July and August, the world watched and international aid agencies scrambled as tens of thousands of Somalis fled famine and fighting in the devastated Southern part of the country, controlled by the armed group al-Shabab. And they continued to flee - to the Somali capital of Mogadishu, and refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia - in the following months, when the world seemed to lose interest.
Tens of thousands of Somalis have died and the UN has warned that three quarters of a million more are at risk of dying before the end of the year.
Somalia's weak Transitional Federal Government, the Obama administration, and the United Nations have all blamed the anti-government group al-Shabab for restricting international aid operations in the areas they control. But is al-Shabab the only reason a drought and food crisis has turned into a deadly famine?
In the first of a two-part series examining the US response to drought and hunger in the Horn of Africa, Fault Lines travels to Mogadishu to meet refugees who have fled to the most war-ravaged city in the world to escape a worse fate, and the aid and medical workers struggling to help them. We examine the legacy of US engagement in Somalia and its efforts to address the current crisis.
Has aid in this region of the world become politicised? And has Washington's pre-occupation with terrorism in the Horn of Africa contributed to the deadly consequences of this disaster?

Some people here are just terrible. I can't believe this. I am of Somali decent, I was born in Canada. My parents where born and raised in Somalia then they came to Canada as adults. I went to Somalia for two months this Summer break, and I saw how people in Africa lived, and how the monetary divide really effects people. No human deserves this kind of suffering, maybe it's because I sometimes feel like if my parents never came to Canada I would be there with them. More people should see that.

Having eight children potentially reduces the amount of food for the children eightfold.
But yes I agree, information, family planning is key, and will lead to development by the free market in the promise of growth.
But no one seems to give a damn.

  • @olgawyn686
    @olgawyn686 11 лет назад +2

This famine could go away if mothers did not have so many children; the belief is in Somalia, is that the children take care of their parents in later years. One or two children would be better as they would not starve as much as the will not have to compete. I do feel for these people but why bring more children in to the world when famine is around. Surely not having so many children would mean that fewer would lose their lives as they would not be competing with brothers and sisters for food.

This famine still would have occurred with a lower pop as the conditions are cyclical, always have been in this part of the world. Blaming this on overpopulation would make sense if they'd reached the limit on crop yield the land could provide, but this is not the case, the solution is to store grain for the dry spells.

  • @usul573

I think it partially comes down to who can get what types of food out of the land or who develops to what level or has what resources and more. People matter of course.
Guns, Germs, and Steel looks at this.
I think most of Europe allowed them to have enough food so that they could advance in many other ways also, and then spreading across the United States which is good land making it become the largest economy in the world.
Things are shifting though, a country can totally boom in 30 years.

According to the Worldwatch Institute if developing countries were to consume as much resources per capita as United States or Japan in 2030 together they would require more than a full planet Earth to meet their needs.
Conclusion: we need to keep them poor and screwed. They will try to develop, and this should be PREVENTED.

I will tell you this: actually having been to Somalia I know there are a lot of people there born intelligent (just like here), they just never get the chance to grow because so little people go to school (because it costs money). I'm certain if I grew up where my parents did (in Hargeysa) today I'd be a very different person. I would have never made it past elementary, and seeing how dangerous the place is I probably would've died young. I could have been one of the victims of this famine.

If these people were not starving, you would not have their cheap natural resources, it would be much more expensive. Africa has 30% of the worlds cobalt resources, 40% of the world's phosphat, 60% of the world's diamonds, 8% of the world proved gas reserves and 10% of the world’s proved oil reserves (BP Statistical Review of World Energy). We need to actively promote massive depopulation in Africa. I'm grateful that they are suffering and dying.

Many of Africa's long-running civil wars have (more or less) ended: Sudan, Congo, Angola and examples of the old Africa (destitute, violent and isolated) are becoming rare. The last decade has seen three times as many democratic elections as in the previous 10 years, and Africa the only continent in the world where there is real economic growth right now: 5% across the board. 150 million African are electronics consumers... The list goes on.

@Gorillaland Religion has something to do with it, I will grant that much but the main problem is cultural.
I am fairly sure that this will not befall the western world seeing as our culture is much different.
Large parts of the continent of Africa has been subject to all kinds of maladies since as far back as I can remember, it hasn't spread, nor has it gotten any better.

@whiteboygotswagg Using the F word won't emphasize your point, so it's not necessary. And there's no need to get so offended. I wasn't even speaking directly towards you.

You got the courage to represent your master Uncle Sam, under whom you gaine well & the Somalis at your extreme end loose badly. Unforfunately, Uncle Sam does’nt share your frankness; if he did he knows he’ll crumble under his own weight, since his evil global empire depends on the illusion that the world’s free & he’s freedom champion; tell the Somalis their displacement is Uncle Sam-created as they never had become free from their colonialists as they’re made to believe. Down to Uncle Sam!

Lol kid. You are too insignificant to hurt my feelings. I find it so ridiculous and ignorant that you would say that a whole continent is a lost cause as if the millions living in poverty don't matter. Don't act like the U.S has always been prosperous. Every nation/continent has its ups and down. What if they had given up on the US? You think we should give up on Africa? Africa is not a lost cause because we have not made every effort to help those over there. They need leaders that are educated and have a vision. All the leaders in the past have been corrupt, selfish, and violent. We don't need people or organizations to send money/food. Africa needs leadership and education. And btw, try and use more than 5 words to make a point instead of just saying the first thing that comes to mind.
